The most important assignment parents have from God is to see that their children are properly educated in
their faith. When parents choose St. Stephen’s Catholic School for their children, they partner with the school
and parish community to ensure a strong spiritual and academic program, to form their children in the way of
the faith, and make Jesus Christ known and loved.
Those committed to St. Stephen’s Catholic school are convinced that our students succeed for the following
reasons:
Catholic Identity: Fr. Jack has high standards for our teachers and for our religion curriculum. The entire
school staff is committed to achieving those standards and has high expectations of their students as models
of the Catholic faith.
A Rigorous Curriculum: St. Stephen’s has always placed a high priority on the basics that include math, science, language arts, and social studies, with religion being the first of the four R’s.
Access to technology is important and our students receive specialized instruction
in Spanish, Art, Music, Media and Technology, Health and Physical Education.
Classroom Structure: Small class sizes ensure attention from the teachers.
Staffing and Administration: After the students themselves, teachers are Catholic
schools’ most precious assets. The Catholic identity of the school, the academic program, the modeling for the students depends upon the faculty.
As a principal, I have come to rely on the talents of skilled parishioners and school
parents. Volunteers support all school programs in the school and are a special
blessing to us.
Funding: Tuition covers 61% of the per-pupil cost. The contribution from parishioner Stewardship giving is 29%, other income earned in school programs and various
fundraising events generates 10% of the total cost to educate each child.
Self-discipline with a Catholic focus: The emphasis placed on discipline in our school attempts to foster
self-discipline. We seek to develop the Christ-like person. Part of being Christ-like requires students to accept
responsibility for their actions and to respect others
High expectations: The teachers expect every student to achieve. They communicate this to their students,
who internalize this value.
Commitment of parents: When parents register their children, we tell them that we can’t educate their children spiritually or academically without their support. We’ve never failed when we partnered with the parents.
This week, we will be celebrating our identity with all the Catholic Schools across the nation. Our week will
begin as students serve as ministers at various Masses with an Open House and book fair to follow. Join us as
we pray together and celebrate our faith, our school and our community.

For the Sake of the Gospel:
Assembling for Worship Bernie Leach
Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all…To the
weak I became weak…I have become all things to all…all this I do for the
sake of the Gospel (1 Cor 9:19, 22a, 23a). As St. Paul became all things to
all people for the sake of the Gospel, we are called to do the same when
gathering as a community to celebrate Mass. A series of articles from
last summer explored the assembly’s role in the different parts of the
Mass. The last few articles described the Liturgy of the Word, so this article picks up with the Prayers of the Faithful, the last
part of the Liturgy of the Word. The faithful listen to
the General Intercessions and they respond as well.
“In the Prayer of the Faithful, the people respond in
a certain way to the word of God which they have
welcomed in faith and, exercising the office of their
baptismal priesthood, offer prayers to God for the
salvation of all.” (GIRM #69) “As a rule, the series of

Reflection
“Love is patient,
love is kind. It is
not jealous, it is
not pompous.” (1
Cor 13:4)
Do you get jealous? Do you focus more on the things that other people have than on
the gifts that God has given to you? Are you pompous? Do you acquire
more possessions to impress others? At times we are all guilty of these
things. Pray for more humility. Pray to become less self-centered and
more God-centered.

(I Corintios 13:4)

We Serve.
The theme of this year’s Appeal is SERVICE. We are serving as your Board
of Directors to make sure that the collective ministries of the Archdiocese
receive the funding they need to operate. Our job is to speak for these
ministries and those in need whom they serve- to tell their story to you.
The 17 ministries operate over 200 programs and serve tens of thousands every year. Rob, for example, had his life
changed forever when he experienced the Prison Ministry retreat, Residents Encounter Christ, while serving a sentence at Lino Lakes
Correctional Facility.
Olive, a member of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, has experienced the true joy of Jesus as she participates
in the ACCW Annual Appalachian Project, helping to deliver presents to the poor in Appalachia from a semi-truck parked at
her farm in Hampton. There are hundreds of Robs and Olives working in, and benefiting from, the Archdiocesan collective
ministries and our mission is to tell their stories to you, our donors.
