Welcome to Region
Ten Technical High School.
In early September we see a
number of new student faces
(though so many resemble
family members who have
passed the halls before
them). And we are comforted by the appearance of
returning students who are
continuing their education
and their positive relationship with our staff members.
We look forward to assisting
all students this fall and for
many years to come, in the
form of recommendations
for college and employment.
Our primary purpose is to help students gain
skills and independence, and
we can accomplish it with
the support of parents/
guardians. It is the combination of well-brought up students and dedicated staff
members who make Region
Ten a stand-out school.
New Staff members
include John Bellino, Instructor of Emergency Medical
Technology, Basic. A graduate of the University of
Southern Maine with experi-
Director Lohnes (center) with new Educational Technicians Thomas Seigars (left)
and Steven Leunig
ence as a Firefighter/
Paramedic in Falmouth, John
has extensive teaching experience holding certification
as a Maine EMS Instructor,
Firefighter I & II Instructor,
CPR Instructor and as a
Maine Paramedic.
Also new this year
are Educational Technicians
Steven Leunig and Tom Seigars. Steven comes to Region Ten with a 17 year
teaching history in basic and
advanced automotives, small
engine repair and auto body
repair, and a 20 years as a
secondary school administrator, inclusive of CTE. Tom
is new to education and joins
our school with work extensive experience in small engines and power sports
equipment, and is a Motorcycle Instructor. All new staff
members received a warm
welcome and bring key talents to Region Ten Tech.

A Note from our Assistant Director
Welcome to the
2014-15 school year at Region Ten. Students and instructors report a terrific
start in their programs.
We have many exciting challenges this school
year with dual enrollment
opportunities, community
service projects, certifications and more. Students
have already completed a
shed and many seniors
earned their OSHA 10 hour
cards!
Please stay in touch as we
move through the school
year. When we work together, students can enjoy a
successful school year.
Visitors are always
welcome at Region Ten!

OSHA 10 Hour Card
Region Ten Tech seniors earn their OSHA 10 Hour card with Adela Cifelli from
Workplace Safety and the Maine Department of Labor
Having an OSHA
Ten Hour Card can make all
the difference when job
hunting. The OSHA Card
certifies that the holder has
had ten hours of general
industry safety training.
Each year, Region
Ten offers OSHA Ten Hour
Card training to all seniors.
Again this year, Adela Cifelli
from the Workplace Safety
& Health Division of the
Maine Department of Labor
started OSHA instruction
during the second week of
school. Adela is a terrific
teacher who uses YouTube
videos and true stories to
keep her classes interesting
and relevant. Our students
will be safer on the job site
and in the classroom because of the OSHA training.
The Auto Collision
Repair program has teamed
up with Northern Maine
Community College for the
second year to allowing one
dual enrollment credit for
earning the OSHA 10 Hour
Card at Region Ten!
Region Ten Receives Grant from Firehouse Subs
Have you
ever wondered
how firemen and
EMTs evacuate
patients from upstairs in a house?
Region Ten recently purchased a
Stryker Stair Chair
using a grant from
the Firehouse Subs
Public Safety Foundation.
With handles at two different heights and
runners that will
slide over a staircase, this chair is
state-of-the art
equipment for
evacuations with
staircases. Region

Students Declare Region Ten Tech a Bully-Free Zone
Students organize an Anti-Bullying rally at Region Ten
On Thursday, September 26, students rallied
against bullying at Region
Ten Technical High School.
Organized by students and
assisted by Chef Ellen Turcotte, Nursing Assistant
Instructor Joanne McMahon
and Early Childhood Instructor Margaret Perry, at
the mid-session breaks students paraded through and
around the school in support of Region Ten’s efforts
against bullying. According
to Director Barry Lohnes,
the enthusiasm was infectious. “We emphasize a ‘live
and let live’ philosophy.” He
added that “Region Ten
works daily to maintain harmony, but with nearly three
hundred students from six
area high schools, including
home-schooled students, it
helps if students and staff
can offer an emphatic reminder that there is no tolerance for bullying behavior
at our school.”

Colby Austin
(MTA) and Christopher
Staples (BHS) were the two
highest scores on the Automotive Service Excellence
(ASE) student certification
test. All students in my
Auto Tech 2 class passed
the test which was proctored by Mr. Quinlan. Each
student will receive an ASE
insignia which can be attached to their uni-
form. The student certification is valid for a two year
period. At that point in
time, it is hoped that the
young technicians will have
at least one full year of
work experience in an automotive facility in addition to
their Auto Tech training
which would make them
eligible to take the regular
ASE certification tests.

Auto Collision Repair
Auto Collision Repair is off to a good start.
Instructor Carr is happy to
announce for the second
year the Auto Collision program has Lisbon High
School students joining us
and are doing very well.
Students have already completed the first
five projects of the year and
are rapidly adding to the list.
Auto Collision is always
looking for good collision
projects from the public,
staff or students. If you

Automotive Technology
Automotive Technology students recently got
five donated vehicles ready
for sealed bid auction. The
vehicles were all donations
to Region Ten that were
worked on by students to
get ready to sell.
The auction was a
success and the vehicle donations serve to teach students the hands-on skills
expected in career/technical
education.
Second year Automotive Technology students with the vehicles auctioned off
in October.
Building Trades
The Building
Trades program has had a
busy start to the year with
many community projects
lining up from sheds to
stairs to assisting community members with winterizing projects.

Also in the works
for next month we are planning a field trip to Lincoln
Tech in Connecticut. Lincoln Tech has a first rate
collision repair program at
the college level and students are looking forward
to our visit.
Stay tuned for
more info and pictures of
the trip!
Building Trades is
currently building an 8’x12’
storage shed using KD
spruce framing and vinyl
siding, as well as a smaller
shed for a generator.
When the new
shed is complete, students
will start work on two dugouts for the Mt. Ararat High
School baseball team. The
dugouts will consist of 8’
cement block and wood
framing.

Food Trades
The Food Trades
program has had an adventurous start to the year. In
September, students spent
the day at Applewald Farm
in Litchfield picking apples
and pumpkins and enjoying
an al fresco dining experience.
On October 9,
through the generosity of
the MELMAC Grant, Region
Ten and Bath Technical
Food Trades students
boarded a bus bound for
Johnson & Wales University,
Providence Rhode Island.
Students toured the campus
and dined with current J&W
student and R10 Tech
Graduate, Brittany Littleford. Students exclaimed it
was “an unforgettable experience.”
The Region Ten
Café is open! Thursday,
October 16, students
opened the Region Ten
Café. Lunch is served to
the public Thursdays from
12:00-1:00 PM. A three
course meal with beverage
is only $10. Reservations
are encouraged 729-6622.
AM and PM students pose on the steps of Johnson & Wales University’s Culinary Arts Museum while on a field trip to the Rhode Island Campus sponsored
by the MELMAC Grant.
Health Occupations
The Health Occupations Program is proud to
be offering both an AM and
PM session for Certified
Nursing Assistants.
The classes are
beginning their journey toward CNA course requirements and the ability to sit
for the certification exam
after the completion of 180
hours of academic, skills
laboratory and clinical rotation sites.
Health Occupations is excited to own
three state-of-the-art patient beds donated to the
program by Mid Coast Hospital at the end of last year.
Students are busy learning
bed making, hand washing
skills and the proper way to
use wheelchairs, walkers,
crutches and canes.

English
Region 10 currently has 24 students enrolled in the Technical English classroom, which is devoted to life-relevant reading and writing skills, as well
as supporting our students
in their preparation for post
-secondary education and
the entrance exams that are
required (SAT and Accuplacer prep).
Our students have
been working on informational writing, on-demand
writing, and career writing,
such as resumes and mock
cover letters.
As we guide our
students through their year
and prepare them for their
post-secondary options, we
pay close attention to their
test scores, and help work
them up to a level where
they will be able to succeed
regardless of their
choices. We have a talented group of motivated
young men and women
who work hard in the
classroom.
A great start to
another great year!

General Trades
The General Trades program is off to a
promising start with 100% of students participating in
the Region Ten FFA Chapter. Students are gearing
up for the State FFA Leadership Conference in Augusta on November 5.
Students have opened the White Owl Café
for business and invited community members to stop
in for a bite any morning or afternoon except
Wednesday.
Wednesdays are recycling day once again.
Last year, General Trades assisted the school in recycling over one ton of material!

the ocean from many locations.” The library offers
unlimited free printing, different levels of quiet zones,
and an attached café. The
food in the cafeteria was

senior Kievone Washington.
Community Preschool is open. Student
teachers are busy and engaged in their work with
children three days a week.
Students have been learning
to provide safety and supervision, and supporting the
preschoolers in their sepa-
eas of development. Did
you know that preschoolers
are just developing the muscles in their hands that allow them to hold a pencil
and cut with scissors? That

Pre Apprenticeship
Eighteen new PreApprenticeship students
have been busy this fall,
both in the classroom and
out in the workforce.
All eighteen are
currently employed at businesses ranging from Hannaford to the Brunswick Inn,
and many stops in between!
Students have
started off the year working
diligently on resumes, cover

FLASHBACK!
First Alumni Barbeque - August, 2014
Even the weather was perfect. On a beautiful summer day last August, Region Ten
proudly hosted its first annual Graduates Barbeque. We had 27 graduates, more than half the
Region Ten staff, and guests from MELMAC, the Financial Authority of Maine, Atlantic Regional Credit Union, parents, and community members. Chef Turcotte and her husband
Bobby Turcotte kept us all happily fed as grads had a chance to visit and ask last minute questions about fall plans. Five graduates from the 2014 class even won twenty dollar gas cards,
thanks to an anonymous donor!
Be watching for information about next summer’s Graduates Barbeque so you can be
in on the fun!
Ronald MacDonald House Donation, 2013-14
www.r10tech.org
Under the guidance
of Office Manager Kellie Gardner, staff and students collected
over 100 pounds of can tabs as
well as recycled $350 in aluminum collected from several
programs.
The generous donation worth over $400 was
presented to the Ronald MacDonald House of Portland, and
will serve to provide a home
away from home for more than
40 nights to a family with a
child seriously ill.
