Welcome to Belgium
Welcome to Belgium!
T
here’s something about
Belgium! Maybe it’s
the modest and welcoming
people who, with three
official languages,
find it easy to converse
in English. Maybe it’s the
stunning architecture
of the medieval
cobblestone squares
or of the modern public
buildings. Or perhaps
it’s the incredible cuisine
found in the vast array
of restaurants where
each meal seems better
than the last.
Richting
Well situated between France, Germany and Holland, Belgium encompasses
all the best that Europe has to offer in an area no bigger than 32.000 km².
Romantic sceneries, waffles and chocolate, music festivals, castles, churches
and museums … all waiting to be discovered!
Often called the ‘Essence of Europe’, Belgium is both multicultural
and multilingual. Flanders in the north, proud of its medieval art cities
Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent. Wallonia in the south, with its rolling hills
of the Ardennes, countless castles, and the cities of Liege, Namur
and Tournai. The capital Brussels is one of the world’s great cosmopolitan
capitals, home to both the European Union and the NATO, as well as multiple
international trade and finance companies. Two out of three citizens
of the European Union live within a radius of 350 km around Brussels.
Belgium’s history has always been linked to both commercial and cultural
exchange, and much of its character is due to its role as the great meeting
place of Western Europe. Traces of the Austrians, Spanish, French and Dutch
can still be seen in its architecture and in the lifestyle of its people.
Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, French and German. The Dutch-speaking part of Belgium is situated
in the northern part of Belgium: Flanders. French is spoken in the southern part of Belgium, Wallonia, and to a large
extent in Brussels as well. The very small German-speaking community is located on the eastern border of Belgium.
Belgium has, like most
of northwest Europe, a maritime
climate, with significant
precipitation in all seasons.
The average temperature is 3 °C
in January and 18 °C in July,
although temperatures vary
between 10°C and 35°C
in summer and -15°C and 15°C
in winter. Rainwear, warm clothes
and an umbrella will be needed,
but not all of the time!

hent is situated
in Flanders and is
only 30 minutes away
from Brussels, Antwerp,
Bruges, the coast, France
and Holland.
With its 65.000 students,
Ghent is the largest
student city in Belgium.
Thanks to its unique
combination of firstclass education and many
leisure activities.
The university and university
colleges’ campuses are spread
across the city,
which enlivens the atmosphere.
Of course it is also impossible
to imagine Ghent without
its bicycling students!
With its university and four
university colleges, Ghent
is able to offer a wide range
of study opportunities.
But being a student is more than
just studying. Ghent also includes
living, transport, nightlife,
cultural experiences and leisure.
The language spoken
(and lectured) in Ghent is Dutch,
the language of twenty million
Dutch and Flemish people.
Ghent boasts a unique mixture
of architecture and contemporary
events, museums of international
repute, impressive gastronomic
choice, and spectacular good
nightlife. It has a historical center
that breathes history
and an agreeable charming inner
city where cozy corners alternate
with pleasant and busy shopping
streets. Ghent combines
the medieval grandeur and modern
consciousness in a natural
and above all, modest way.
Moreover, the city is a cultural
attraction with its important music
and film festivals, as well as
its varied theatre and performance
scene. For every traditional
theatre, there are five small,
independent venues and for each
commercial cinema complex,
there are two art house cinemas.
The music scene is live and
original, with many international
bands playing Ghent, and the
Belgian festivals, all year round.

Artevelde University

T
he ambition of
Artevelde University
College Ghent is to be
a significant center
of professional
and scientific expertise,
locally, nationally
and internationally.
This ambition
is exemplified
by the output
of numerous research
projects and the supply
of a great diversity
of community services
and training programmes.
The policy is to continuously grow
as a social enterprise that actively
interacts with stakeholders
in Belgian society and abroad.
The 3 principles that guide
the development of the research
and services department
at Artevelde University College
Ghent can be summarized
as follows.
1. Practice oriented
and practice based
Practice oriented means
that research is geared towards
the development of concrete
applications: artifacts, methods,
policies, etc. Practice based means
that our work is rooted in real life
and professional experiences.
The consequence is that only
a thin line separates scientific
research and service provision,
but they are mutually reinforcing.
Services are developed and tested
through scientific research,
whilst research projects benefit
from evidence and ideas collected
by working in real life settings.
2. Collaborative method
We deliberately opt for research
methods that are collaborative
in nature. Such methods actively
involve stakeholders in the design
and execution of research
and service projects.
The involvement of stakeholders
in Belgium or abroad ensures
that the output of our projects
correspond to their needs
and expectations. On top of this,
their involvement allows us
to apply the practical know-how
and experience that is available
in the field.
11
3. Programmatic approach
Thirdly we are supposed
to both feed in and to draw from
a common and transdisciplinary
intellectual programme.
All ad hoc experiences
and information acquired,
contribute to developing our long
term expertise and to improving
our capacity to serve the
beneficiaries of our projects.
Finally, our programmes are
articulated around four focus
areas, each regrouping a number
of complementary lines of inquiry:
(1) health, social well being
and self-sufficiency; (2) education,
teaching and youth culture;
(3) entrepreneurship, organisation
and competences and (4)
communication, persuasion
and imagery.

Strategic Alliances at Artevelde University College
Strategic Alliances at Artevelde
University College Ghent
A
rtevelde University College Ghent
enjoys an extensive network
of international contacts spread
over 6 continents. These partnerships
(universities, university colleges, NGO’s...)
were all consciously chosen
for their complementarities
in the context of mobility
but also for other domains
such as professionalisation,
social services and education.
Out of the network of institutions in countries
that are not part of the European Union,
the Artevelde University College Ghent opted
for a strategic collaboration with five partner countries,
i.e. the ‘strategic alliances’: Ecuador, Canada, Turkey,
South Africa and Vietnam (and by extension
Suriname and Cambodia). The choice for these
countries stemmed from previous collaborations.
Artevelde University College Ghent can rely
on an extensive and stable network of training
organisations and higher education institutions
for the organizing of mobility and entering into projects
in these countries. In some of the strategic alliances
such as Ecuador, Suriname and Cambodia,
a close working relationship exists with NGO’s
who work at government level to improve education.
Within this form of cooperation Artevelde University
College Ghent, through its training and services,
shares its expertise where necessary and requested,
which with time contributes to a structural cooperation.
Ecuador, Suriname, South Africa and Vietnam
also belong to the partner countries of the
Belgian Development Cooperation and the Flemish
Interuniversity Development Cooperation (VLIR UOS).
In Turkey, a number of fixed partners are collaborating
in organizing of interdisciplinary programmes
and projects. The strategic alliances are an institutionwide initiative, in the sense that each alliance
is represented by a ‘strategic agent’ who follows up
the contacts with the institutions and who is also
the contact person for the different departments,
interested in expanding their cooperation.

Our offer for international exchange students
Our offer for international
exchange students
A
rtevelde University College Ghent
has opted for a policy of international
cooperation, which started with its active
participation in the Lifelong Learning
Programme (LLP).
This policy is put into practice
by a long tradition of cooperation
in Europe regarding student and staff
mobility, participation in and coordination
of intensive, international programmes,
joint educational development, research
and services. Another important goal
is the construction of a worldwide
qualitative network of strategic
partners to enable the institution
to set up cooperation beyond
the borders of Europe.
Artevelde University College Ghent offers exchange
students a variety of international programmes
which are taught in English. The presence of foreign
students and staff at Artevelde University College
Ghent is believed to be a significant enrichment,
both academically and culturally, for the whole institute.
Besides embedded English taught semester
programmes and short courses (two weeks),
Artevelde University College Ghent also offers shortrunning intensive programmes. In these short courses
and intensive programmes students and staff

Bachelor of Midwifery
A competency based curriculum
forms the basis for quality
in education and for safe
caretaking. This vision leads
to a dual path: on the one side,
the midwife in the work field
and on the other side, the
midwife in training. The midwifery
department’s starting point
is that dynamics and quality
can only be realized in a culture
where all actors, both
from the work field and from
the department, cooperate
in an integrated and holistic way
to achieve the aims
of the International Confederation
of Midwives named ‘Strengthening
Midwifery Globally’.
Study programme
The midwifery department offers
a three year modular
and competency based curriculum,
existing of 15 different modules,
covering in depth training
on antenatal care, labor related
care and delivery, postnatal and neonatal care
and also including scientific research and evidence
based practice with a final thesis.
The curriculum is based on a framework
of 24 midwifery and generic competencies,
related to six professional roles. In 2008 the Midwifery
Department received a special quality label
from the Accreditation Council NVAO for this curriculum
development and expertise in competency-based
learning.
The job
A graduate is legally qualified to practice autonomously
as a professional midwife, with medical competencies
in the antenatal health care. The midwife is a specialist
in normal obstetrics, but can also act as an assistant
to medical specialists to supplement, improve or provide
care in all aspects of reproductive health.
Graduates can work in the delivery room, the maternity
ward or in the gynecology and neonatology department
of a hospital, in centers for fertility research,
as a prenatal exercise teacher, as a procreation

and parenthood officer... or they can work as selfemployees, in a primary or secondary role, guiding
pregnant and new mothers in their own home.
International offer
The department maintains an international
collaboration with other universities and university
colleges. International exchanges are facilitated by the
new modular curriculum. Students are encouraged
to take advantage of these opportunities, both
to enhance their professional and clinical development
and their personal development particularly in terms of
communication skills and multicultural understanding.
Next to the LLP/ERASMUS Programme that enables
students to obtain an international experience within
Europe, students can also opt for, after a short specific

Study Programme
and Special Education want
to inspire and support teachers
and other school staff in their
educational activities towards
pupils with special educational
needs, e.g. pupils with autism,
learning disorders, physical
disabilities, chronic diseases,
complex social and behavioural
problems, etc. Both competencybased programmes
offer two options: a four semester
programme with evening courses
(where students work 1 day
a week in a school)
or a two semester programme
combining evening and daytime
courses (students work 2,5 days
a week in a school).
The advanced Bachelor
programmes Special Educational
Needs and Remedial Teaching
Both programmes are open
to teachers and other

a bachelor degree in education
or another bachelor or master
degree (e.g. social work,
occupational therapy, speech
therapy, etc.) or work as a teacher.
In the advanced Bachelors,
students learn to assess
and formulate special
individualized educational needs.
They are taught to evaluate
and adjust learning targets,
with the cooperation of pupils,
families and all those concerned.
Students also learn to work
together in a team, develop
an inclusive policy and coordinate
different initiatives
at the school level. Lecturers
and professionals (e.g. parents
in parent organisations,
pedagogues, therapists, social
workers, etc.) combine current
conceptual frameworks,
Richting
methodology and contents with the daily
teaching reality. They guide and supervise the students
in further professionalization, reflection and experience based learning.
The job
Graduates from these advanced Bachelors have greater opportunities
to work as care coordinators, guidance counsellors, trainers or as remedial
workers.
International offer
Exchange students get opportunities to participate in international modules
or to follow an international course on Intercultural Competences.
We have also established a cooperation with international partners in Finland
(Metropolia University Helsinki), Sweden (University of Gävle), the United
Kingdom (St. Mary’s University Belfast) and Spain (University of Ramon Llull
Blanquerna Barcelona, La Salle University Madrid,
Edetania University Valencia).

The new advanced Bachelor of School Development is a unique programme
in Belgium. Students are trained to detect, introduce, develop and guide
changes within a school or school community. The school counsellor
or change manager introduces by example the interactive whiteboard,
mentorship for new teachers or develops a care policy or new innovative
methods. A school developer also coordinates professionalization policies
and coaches colleagues in their educational approaches and needs.
Students who want to enrol have to prove that they have three years
of experience in education and an education diploma. The programme
is organized in evening classes (one evening a week) during three academic
years. All students have to work a minimum of half a week in secondary
or primary education during this programme. This course forms specialists
in the guiding processes of school development and educational reform.
