Finding Jax
As most of Fluvanna County knows, we
recently adopted a dog from Caring for
Creatures. What we couldn’t have known
at the time, is the depth and breadth of love,
support and dedication that the volunteer
staff would pour out over our family and in
support of our newest family member, Jax.
You see, on the day of his adoption, Jax ran
away from home. He didn’t even make it
into the house before he escaped and was
running through the streets of Lake Monticello dragging a neon orange leash behind
him. Not having any idea where he was or
where to turn to find his way home, Jax ran
the streets of Lake Monticello, and frighteningly along Rt. 53 as well. Thankfully,
Jax wasn’t adopted from just any animal
adoption organization, he was adopted
from Caring for Creatures, a no kill animal
sanctuary that makes a lifetime commitment to each and every animal that passes
through its doors.
As soon as Jax escaped we made the
gut-wrenching call to the sanctuary to
let them know what happened, and it
was the best decision we ever could have
made. Instantly, one of Jax’s handlers
was in route to Lake Monticello to begin
the search. Within an hour, at least four,
and at times during the search, as many
as 10, volunteer staff members were
searching the streets at the Lake for Jax.
Jax went missing at 1:30 on Tuesday
afternoon. By 2 p.m. volunteers were
combing the streets carrying treats,
leashes with his scent, and calling his
name. The search did not stop until late
into the evening when it was finally too
dark for any hope of a sighting. First
thing Wednesday morning volunteers
were back on the streets continuing
the search, which continued until the
early hours of Thursday morning. Each
time a sighting was reported, multiple
volunteers would be in the area within
minutes. After a 9 p.m. sighting on our
very own porch Wednesday night, four
volunteers showed up at our house
within minutes and began to search in
the dark and in the rain. These volunteers chose to search without umbrellas and in some cases without jackets
because they did not want to spook Jax.
One dedicated volunteer, whose love and
commitment for Jax was beyond evident
throughout the entire search, sat in the
doorway of our home until 2:30 in the
morning, trying to lure him inside. After
many hours without a sighting, with
aching bones from sitting on floor, the
volunteer finally headed home for a few
hours of sleep with the plan to continue
the search with the rest of the gang the
next morning.
Thankfully Jax found his way home
around 6 am on Thursday morning and
was found safe and sound in a humane
trap that was set for him, but we have
no doubt that if he hadn’t, the Caring for
Creatures volunteer staff would not have
given up until he was safe at home.
Caring for Creatures has been operating for 25 years. Their approach to
animal care is beyond measure. They
employ natural remedies in their treatment of ailments and to calm the nerves
of the animals in their care. They get
to know the individual needs of each
animal and work with them on training, rehabilitation, and any specialized
care as necessary. They use any methods
available to provide the support and care
necessary to assist the animals through
any special needs. They use thunder
shirts for animals that are frightened
by storms. They use lavender and other
essential oils to help calm the animals’
nerves. They provide high quality food,
stimulation, and offsite training to
prepare animals for adoption. They even
used an animal communicator to aid in
the search for Jax.
For families that don’t experience
the extenuating circumstances of a lost
pet, the support and dedication of the
sanctuary volunteers is still clearly displayed during each adoption experience. In our case, a detailed interview
about our family, our lifestyle, and the
characteristics we were looking for in
a dog was conducted during our visit.
Several staff members worked together
to discuss each animal at the sanctuary
before making recommendations for our
family. Their choice of dog for us could
not have been a more perfect fit. Since
returning home, Jax has instantly fit into
our family and our lives, in ways that
we never could have imagined. We are
beyond in love with this dog and blessed
to be entrusted with his care.
We will never be able to express our
sincere gratitude and thanks to the
amazing staff at Caring for Creatures
and we will never forget their support
and dedication. If you are interested in
adopting a pet, serving as a foster home,
providing sleepovers during extreme
weather conditions, or if you are able
to provide donations, including food,
pet supplies, or monetary donations we
highly recommend contacting Caring
for Creatures right away for a copy of
their wish list or information about their
adoption procedures. You can contact
them via email at [email protected]
or by phone at 434-842-2404.

Thanks friends and family
Thank you to family and dear friends Fluvanna schools, co-workers and a special
thanks to bus drivers, Fluvanna County
employees, all fire/rescue members, pastor
house, area churches-(many, many, prayer
worriers), STAB & CVEC.
“In everything give thanks; for this is
the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1
Thessalonians 5:18.
A simple “thank you” does not seem
adequate to express our most sincere
gratitude for all that you have done and
are doing to support us during our most
vulnerable time. “Thanks’ is defined in
Webster’s dictionary as “an expression of
appreciation or gratitude or an acknowledgement of services.” We are truly appreciative and grateful as we acknowledge the many acts of kindness shown
toward us. Thanks for your prayers, love,
monetary donations, food, transportation, and thoughtfulness.
Friends like you are a rare gift. Your
generosity has totally overwhelmed us
and reflects just how much of a beautiful, kind soul you are. We will be forever
thankful for the gift of time and the kindness you extended to us. Keep us in your
prayers for strength and endurance as we
journey through this next phase of life.
We cherish your friendship and love.
You have brought happiness and encouragement into our lives. In every situation
you have known just what to do to add
that special touch. For that and all other
acts of support we say, “Thank you,
Thank you, and thank you!”

unnoticed or unremarked upon. The
turnout was an excellent expression of
community involvement and concern,
an exercise in local democracy too often
not seen. Numerous speakers passionately addressed support of Ashlawn
Grille, however uninformed or informed
they were. What struck this attendee
was the boorish rudeness of many participants, the jeering and booing one
heard from otherwise presumably adult
citizens. The LMOA Board serves the
community through countless hours
of meetings, pro bono by the way, and
always deserves more respect than it received last week.

Two Fluvanna County men were indicted Monday (Aug. 25) by a Fluvanna
County grand jury in connection with
the robberies of two Fluvanna convenience stores – the Columbia Corner
Market and Kidd’s Store.
Bradford Quentin Bullock of Fluvanna
was indicted on nine counts, according
to court documents. Bullock has five
charges stemming from the robbery of
the Columbia Corner Market and four
from the robbery at Kidd’s Store.
Fluvanna resident Dennis Thomas has
also been indicted for the armed robberies of the Columbia Corner Market and
Kidds’ Store.
Thomas was charged with two counts
of robbery, two counts of conspiracy to
commit robbery, and two counts of use of
a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Thomas will be arraigned on Sept. 5.
Quashon James of Charlottesville was
indicted on four counts. James has two
charges for each robbery, according to
court documents.
The Columbia Corner Market was robbed
on October 9, 2013 and the Kidd’s Store
robbery took place on September 25, 2013.
Both men will be arraigned in Fluvanna
County Circuit Court on September 5, 2014.
In May, three members of a unit of the
Bloods street gang were also charged with
robbing the Columbia Corner Market.
Daniel Lamont Mathis, Shantai Monique
Shelton, and an unnamed juvenile – all
confirmed members of the “99 Goon
Syndikate” – were charged with robbery
according to a federal indictment.
That indictment stated that Mathis,
Shelton, and the juvenile, with six others,
engaged in “criminal activity including
but not limited to: assault resulting in
bodily injury; assault with a dangerous
weapon; robbery; larceny; burglary; obstruction of justice; kidnapping; carjacking; murder; drug trafficking; and conspiracy to commit those crimes.”
This indictment on federal racketeering charges also accuses Mathis and
Shelton of being involved in the robbery,
kidnapping, and murder of Kevin Quick,

Concerned Lake Monticello residents attended the Lake Monticello Owners’
Association (LMOA) Board meeting on Aug. 28. Photo by Tricia Johnson
Concern for the future of the Ashlawn
Grille prompted over 100 Lake Monticello residents to attend the Lake Monticello Owners’ Association (LMOA) Board
meeting on Aug. 28.
Chairperson Marlene Weaver opened
the meeting by addressing the controversy over the Ashlawn Grille directly.
Weaver said she knew there were “a lot
of rumors” and that she had received
letters and emails from residents on the
topic. Weaver said that the LMOA has a
contract with the Ashlawn Grille through
2016 and that “nothing has changed.”
“We just ordered a $5,000 oven,” she
said, and added that they first learned of
the need through Facebook posts.
Skip Allston contracts to run the
Ashlawn Grille, which is owned and
maintained by the LMOA and located
in the clubhouse of the gated community. One of the amenities offered at the
Lake Monticello Club House are banquet
rooms, which are often reserved for
private events such as wedding receptions and private parties, and for other
events like meetings of local organizations. It has been the practice of LMOA
to allow Allston to handle the booking
of these banquet rooms if the Ashlawn
Grille will be catering the event. Allston
has been permitted to reserve the space
at no additional charge, which has been
beneficial to the catering part of his
business. Residents who support Allston
were concerned that the LMOA Board
intended to insist that all banquet room
leases be handled through their office
and charged for, potentially causing the
restaurant to lose business.
“The approved proposal (at the
meeting) was a temporary reduction in
our room rates to compensate for the
outdated condition of the building,” said
Weaver in an interview. “These rates are
set each year at budget time and will
be reviewed again in a couple months
during the budget cycle for 2015.”
At least 10 people addressed the Board
during the public comment sections of
the meetings, and a petition in support
of the Ashlawn Grille with 150 signatures was given to the Board.
“Things are not transparent,” said Lake
Monticello resident Page Gifford. She
To advertise call: 434.207.0222
pointed to that lack of transparency as a
contributor to the rumors in the community, and urged the Board to more clearly
communicate with the residents. She
also urged the residents to “have more
respect for the Board. Be more open
about it. I see the door opening and I
hope that we can all work together.”
“It is always good to see community involvement,” said Weaver in an interview.
“However, it is important that the rumors
don’t overtake the facts, and after hearing
some of the community comments,
there are still some misunderstandings,”
she added. “…there has never been any
action taken to close or move the restaurant. This all started because we had an
architect and engineering study done on
our facilities and we asked them to study
our buildings based on some general requirements and give us a report with a
few options as a baseline to begin our
planning for renovation and/or replacement of our buildings.”
“Among other things,” Weaver said,
“the report included the recommendation to renovate the clubhouse and
replace the golf building entirely. One
of the options included a new community center to include a restaurant in a
location next to the golf course where
we have undeveloped land available and
another option included leaving the restaurant where it was and adding an addition. No action was taken on either
option except to engage an ad-hoc committee to survey the community and
find out their wishes. That committee is
now underway and you heard their first
report last night. By October the BOD
expects a report to be submitted from
the ad-hoc committee.”
“The data from the surveys and town
halls and presented by the committee
in October will be used by the Board
to decide on the way forward regarding the clubhouse and the golf center,”
said Weaver. ”This is the member’s time
to speak out and voice their views. The
first town hall conducted by the committee is Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. and the
second town hall is Sunday, Sept. 7 at 4
p.m. It would be ideal if everyone who
was present last night be among those
attending the town halls.”

Lawsuit costly: Davenport spends
$1.6 million, county, $500,000
County says emails

BY TRICIA JOHNSON, CORRESPONDENT
County fails to meet deadline
to produce them
Fluvanna County has spent over half
a million dollars in legal fees in the Davenport lawsuit, and could be required to
pay another million in Davenport attorneys’ fees if it loses the suit.
Davenport’s attorneys plan to ask that
Fluvanna be held responsible for legal
fees incurred by Davenport in its defense
if the county loses the case. Attorney Joe
Reid of McGuire Woods, the firm representing Davenport, confirmed that those
fees stood at $1.6 million.
Reid said, “Davenport continues to
believe that this case was wrongly filed
against it and as we have said in court
we are asking for reimbursement of our
legal fees …the county has asked for
disclosure of the amount of those fees
and Davenport is going to provide it. The
defense costs to date exceed a million
dollars, and they continue to grow.”
Davenport released a statement saying:
“As it has all along, Davenport stands by
the advice it gave the county in connection with the financing of the new high
school for Fluvanna, and remains proud

deposition, “that costs

for the county.”
luvanna County has failed to meet a two week
deadline set by a judge in the Davenport
lawsuit to produce vital emails from the email
account of former County Administrator Cabell
Lawton. Attorneys representing the county say the
emails have been lost or destroyed.
Lawton served as county administrator from
2003-2010, during which time the Board of Supervisors voted to construct the new high school and
chose which bonds to use to fund the construction.
State law dictates that records from county governments be maintained and archived. Failure to
properly maintain county government records can
result in criminal charges.
The order to meet the deadline was issued at
an Aug. 14 hearing in Fluvanna County Circuit
Courthouse presided over by Circuit Judge Alfred
D. Swersky. Swersky told county attorneys, “you’ve
got two weeks to get them, two weeks from today.
And I don’t think I have to remind everybody in
this room what the serious ramifications are to the
county if these things cannot be or are not produced.” The two week deadline set by the judge fell
on Thursday, Aug. 28.
At the hearing, one of the lawyers representing the county, Melissa Ann Connor, explained the
situation to the judge. “Apparently when he left,
his emails were totally cleaned out. We don’t know
why. We don’t know who did it. The (information
technology) expert for the county has attempted
several times to bring those back and resurrect
them in some way, shape, or form, and he says
he cannot do it,” said Connor in a hearing on Aug.
14. “With regard to Cabell Lawton’s emails,” she
added, “we just simply can’t obtain them.”
Those emails, as well as emails from others in
county administration and the Board of Supervisors, are just part of the information that was being
sought by attorneys representing Davenport &
Company in defending a $5 million lawsuit brought
by the county against the firm. They were also
looking for documentation showing how the county
arrived at their calculation of damages in the suit
and documentation pertaining to the refinancing of
the bonds obtained to support the construction of
the high school.
“…with respect to all discovery, they’ve only
produced from one custodian, Renee Hoover, the
former finance director. They appear to not have
collected email from anyone else,” said Tennille
Checkovich, an attorney representing Davenport, at
the Aug. 14 hearing. “So we’ve had no document
production since 2012, and none from any other
source other than Ms. Hoover who is not with the
county anymore. We’ve asked repeatedly that they
do a broader, more appropriate search for documents, and that they produce the documents remaining to this refinancing in 2012, and we haven’t
received anything.”
“With regard to the Board itself, several times
Mr. Payne has asked the Board if they have emails
regarding this,” said Connor in that hearing. “I
believe one person had one email they produced.”
She pointed to multiple “regime changes” and to
limited county resources as reasons for the delay
in responding to discovery motions.
Checkovich replied, “…it’s down to really these
two issues which are sort of fundamental laws with
the way they approach discovery. I mean, I hear
what sounds like spoliation. This is all news to me.”
She then asked the judge to order the county to
produce the emails and other materials.
The next hearing in the Davenport lawsuit will
be held on Sept. 2 in the circuit court room at the
Fluvanna County courthouse.
Cabell Lawton could not be reached for comment.
County Attorney Fred Payne declined to comment.
F
to have played a role in bringing this
project to completion as the Board of Supervisors directed in 2008. As stated in
court, we believe this lawsuit by a later
Board of Supervisors was baseless from
the outset and will continue to seek its
dismissal, along with a reimbursement of
Davenport’s costs to defend itself, which
to date are in excess of $1.6 million.”
Fluvanna County Administrator Steve
Nichols confirmed that Fluvanna County
has spent $505,972 in attorneys’ fees. Of
that amount $426,595 was paid to the
attorneys of Park Palais, and $79,377 to
Payne and Hodous, the law firm of Fluvanna County Attorney Fred Payne.
As part of the suit, Davenport lawyers
deposed a total of seven current and
former supervisors as well as County
Administrator Steve Nichols and Minor
Eager, a community activist.
All of the supervisors deposed, with
the exception of Sheridan who was not
permitted to answer by the attorney
representing the county, indicated that
they continue to support the lawsuit
and believe that even at a cost of half a
million dollars, it is a good investment
for the county.
Former Chairman of the Fluvanna Board
of Supervisors Shaun Kenney indicated
that the cost of the lawsuit to date was anticipated by the Board early on. “We had
foreknowledge,” Kenney said in his deposition, “that costs could climb into the midlevel six-figure range for the county.”
Current Vice Chairman Bob Ullenbruch
stated, when asked how much money the
county was willing to spend on the lawsuit,
“There is no ceiling at this point.”
The depositions, taken in May, show that
many of the supervisors were unfamiliar
with the specifics of the allegations against
Davenport. Most of them expressed confidence in the county’s legal counsel’s judgment in pursuing the lawsuit.
The Board filed a lawsuit against Davenport in September of 2011 in which it
claimed that Davenport gave the Board
bad financial advice which cost the county
money. The suit alleges that Davenport’s
guidance caused the county to pay more
than they should have for bonds to build
the new high school. It also contends that
Davenport lined its pockets in the process.
Initially the lawsuit was in the amount
of $18 million, but it was reduced to $5
million after the county refinanced some
of the bonds.
Fluvanna Circuit Court will hear the next
pre-trial arguments in this case on Sept. 15.
Fred Payne, Fluvanna County attorney, refused to comment on the lawsuit,
saying that he believes it is inappropriate to comment on ongoing litigation.
– Tricia Johnson, Correspondent
Supervisor Don Weaver declined to
comment as well.

Local artist Saul Kaplan.

Longtime artist and Lake Monticello
resident Saul Kaplan has published a new
book titled “Drawing for Life: A Legacy.”
Printed this summer, the book compiles hundreds of drawings, paintings and
photographs of sculpture into a “kind of
autobiography,” as Kaplan wrote in his
introduction. “This book…is a condensation of the thousands of hours and thousands of works I have made in a lifetime.”
What drove him to create this book?
“I’m 85 now,” Kaplan said. “I had a bad
winter. I guess I see my mortality. I’ve
been doing artwork for over 65 years.
I wanted to leave something back for
the kids. When you expire most of your
drawings are going to end up in the
dumpster. So I collected some drawings to put in book form for my family.
I called this book ‘legacy’ because this is
what my kids, grandkids, and friends will
have on their bookshelf or table.”
All of Kaplan’s work, he said, is based
on his family: his wife, his three sons, and
his grandchildren. Flipping through the
pages of his book shows Kaplan’s fascination with the human face – many of which
start to look familiar by the last pages.
Kaplan’s friends, Michael and Maggie
Hoover, knew how much Kaplan wanted
to leave behind a book of his work for his
family. So they “waded patiently through
piles of my two-dimensional work and,

Trooper explains decision
not to charge deputy
BY CHRISTINA DIMEO GUSEMAN, CORRESPONDENT
The state trooper who investigated the Aug. 12 rear
-end crash involving Fluvanna County Deputy Karen
Chambers said he didn’t
charge the deputy because
she might be punished by
the sheriff’s office.
Trooper Justin Ruhlman
drew a distinction between
a “normal citizen” and a law
enforcement agent in an interview with the Fluvanna
Review. “With law enforcement agencies, they’ll do their own internal investigation and decide whether
or not she’ll be disciplined and have to
go through driving school and things like
that, whereas a normal citizen doesn’t
have that. So if I were to charge her it
would be like double jeopardy.”
Chambers’ patrol car rear-ended
another car. No one was injured.
Virginia State Police Spokeswoman
Corinne Geller said, in an email to the
Fluvanna Review that, “a trooper is authorized to warn, summons or arrest. A
trooper’s decision to (warn, summons
or arrest) is based on the crash investigation, witness statements, statements
provided by those involved, extent of
injuries, damage to vehicles, causative
factors, road conditions, weather condi-

tions, etc. Our troopers take investigations very seriously and this crash was
handled just like any other crash investigation. The sheriff requested state
police to investigate the crash in order
to provide an independent and objective
handling of the matter.”
Sheriff Eric Hess told the Review in a
text that Chambers may be punished
through the department’s crash review
board which meets every four months.
Chambers, 51, was driving northbound
on Rt. 15 when her patrol car rear-ended a
car driven by Trevis Thomas, 22, who had
stopped to turn left onto Rt. 616. Ruhlman
said Chambers drove over a hill and “didn’t
realize the vehicle was stopped.”

Fluvanna students
improve SOL math
scores
PM
BY TRICIA JOHNSON,
CORRESPONDENT
Fluvanna County Public Schools (FCPS)
saw a significant increase in student
achievement in the Math Standards of
Learning Assessments (SOLs) for the
2013-2014 school year, according to test
results released by the state.
In Fluvanna, 75% of students passed
the mathematics assessment for their
grade level or course; this compares
with 74% statewide. FCPS saw a seven
point increase in student performance
on the state math assessment. Grade six
students saw their scores increase by 12
points: this surpassed the state average
by 11 points.
FCPS had an emphasis on mathematics instruction during the 2013-2014
school year. Fluvanna Middle School
was not fully accredited last year based
on the SOL scores in math. FCPS should
learn next month if the middle school
has obtained accreditation when the
state releases information on accreditation: they anticipate that all schools
will be fully accredited. The Curriculum
and Instruction Team conducted “Math
Retreats” with teachers in grades three
through eight. The teachers reviewed
test items and discussed testing and instructional strategies.
Fluvanna County High School and
Fluvanna Middle School surpassed state
averages for algebra I and geometry endof-course assessments. FCPS saw growth
in all nine areas assessed by the state in
mathematics.

in performance on the grade six mathematics SOL test. Fluvanna also ranked
15th on the algebra I SOL and 20th on
the geometry SOL.
“The staff worked extremely hard last
year. They developed professional learning communities and shared their expertise with one another. The administrators
provided strong leadership and focused
on student outcomes,” said Brenda
Gilliam, director of curriculum and instruction for Fluvanna County Public
Schools. “We are excited about the progress we have made and have set our goals
higher for 2014-2015,” she added.
In other subjects, English scores for
end-of-course reading ranked 4th in the
state, while writing ranked 13th. Grade
five reading and grade five writing both
increased by seven points.
Fluvanna County offered AP human
geography for the first time in 20132014; Fluvanna ranked #1 in the state –
100% of the students passed the test.
While scores increased over last year’s
performance in 14 categories, scores
dropped in 19 categories. Students met
or surpassed the state average scores
in 17 categories but were below state
average in 16 categories.
Fluvanna’s least impressive scores
were in grade three science where they
ranked 89th (although that was an increase from last year’s rank of 93rd) and
Virginia history grade four where they
also ranked 89th.

Fluco sports in review
BY CHRIS HAISLIP AND BEN SHERIDAN,
FLUVANNA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM PROGRAM
Chris and Ben compiled this information with the
oversight of journalism teacher Elizabeth Pellicane
Football
After a handful of scrimmages, the
Flying Fluco football team is ready to
start what they hope will be a successful season. On Aug. 29, the varsity team
traveled to William Fleming High School
in Roanoke to take on the Colonels.
The Flucos lost 63 to 7. The Flucos had
been very competitive throughout their
season scrimmages, and were more than
ready to get going. “The scrimmages are
nice preparation, but it’ll be nice to play
some real games,” said senior defensive
back Juan Salazar. The varsity team’s first
home game will be on Sept. 5 against the
Spotsylvania Knights.
As for the junior varsity team, their
year started off on a rough note, as the
Flucos lost their season opener at home
against William Fleming on Aug. 27. The
game was a lopsided one, with the Colonels prevailing 52-0. Under the direction
of Coach Dave Johnson, team members
were hoping to improve as they faced the
Knights at Spotsylvania on Sept. 3.
Cross Country
Three weeks into the school year, the
cross country team is appearing to be
running swiftly under the guidance of
longtime coaches Tom Casto and Rose
Brogan. On Aug. 27, they traveled to
Madison County and ran against a variety
of other schools. Both the boys’ team and
girls’ team came in first place, clearly
outpacing their competitors. Standouts
for the boys’ team included senior Travis
Moe, junior Jonathan Corbin, junior
Andy Guess, and senior Matt Jonkman.
“I think our results come from the hard
work that we put in every day during
practice. Without it, I don’t think that
we’d be as successful,” said Moe. The
girls’ team also came in first place, with
junior Bridget Bossong, senior Hayley
Kline, freshman Kristen Cabrera, and
junior Sarah Edgerton placing well. On
Sept. 2, the cross country team traveled
to their second meet of the season, this
time at Albemarle High School.
Golf
Though they have faced adversity, the
Fluco golf team has continued to stay
mentally and emotionally strong. The
team had a tough third week of competition, as they lost both of their matches.
“We aren’t where we want to be right now,
but we are getting better and growing as a
team,” said senior Christian Baber.
In the first match, the team
traveled to Birdwood Golf Club
on Aug. 26 to
oppose the Albemarle Patriots. With a score
of 193-163, the
team came up
short in points and were
handed a loss. Fluvanna’s top
four scorers in the match were
sophomore Jack Stanke, who shot
a
42, senior Nick Yancey, who shot a
45, Baber, who shot a 52, and freshman
Brennan Baber, who shot a 54.
For their second match of the week,
the team played home at Lake Monticello on August 28, hosting the Orange
County Hornets. Despite the Flucos’ best
efforts, the result was another let-down
for the Flucos, as they lost by a score of
194-174. Top scorers for that match included consistent top-seed Stanke, who
shot a 41, senior Kaitlin Presley, who
shot a 49, Brennan Baber, who shot a 49,
and junior Tyler Marshall, who shot a 55.
Though the team has had a rocky start,
these golfers believe that they still have potential to finish well this season. “I believe
that our best has yet to come and hopefully by the time the playoffs come around,
we will be ready,” said Christian Baber. The
Fluco’s next matches took place on Sept.
2, when they traveled to face the Spotsylvania Knights, and on Sept. 4, when they
traveled again, this time to Monticello to
oppose the Mustangs.
Volleyball

tinued to show off their hard work and
dedication with rigorous practices. “The
girls are working really hard and are
getting to know more about each other as
they continue to build team chemistry,”
said Head Coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett.
The team will play their first game on
Sept. 4, when they host the Waynesboro
Little Giants at 6 p.m. at FCHS. Following
that they will play in a tournament at Albemarle High School on Sept. 6.

Fluco falls to Orange
BY DUNCAN NIXON, CORRESPONDENT
The Fluco golf team hosted a strong team
from Orange County High on Thursday,
Aug. 28. The Orange County team proved
to have a deeper squad than the Flucos
and came away with 194-174 victory.
Times have changed and this is no
longer the Fluvanna County “boys” golf
team. Sophomore Jack Stanke played
in the number one slot for the Flucos,
while senior Kaitlin Presley played in the
number two slot. Stanke, playing from
the white tees, shot a very consistent
round of 41. He had five bogies and four
pars, including the very difficult ninth
hole. It is not an easy task to play the
front nine without recording a double
bogie or worse.
Presley played from the red and shot
pars on the second and third holes. On the
second, her very strong second shot made
her the only one in the foursome to be on
regulation. Unfortunately, she ran into bad
luck on number four and had to take two
penalty strokes on the hole. Both came
on shots that looked pretty good as they
came off the club, but somehow managed
to find trouble. Presley went on to record
a 49. This was tied for second best score
for the Flucos, Orange’s top three players
recorded 41, 42 and 43. Dual meets, such
as this one, are scored by combining the
four best scores recorded by the first six
players each coach selects to compete in
the meet. In this meet, freshman Brennan
Baber, playing in the number four slot,
matched Presley’s score of 49. The next

best score for the Flucos was a 55 recorded by junior Tyler Marshall, playing in the
number five slot. Senior Christian Baber
and Senior Ben Sheridan were the other
starters for the Flucos. These meets are
played on a medal play basis, and there
are no conceded putts, and no picking up
in frustration and saying “give me a nine.”
These young golfers played a good
brand of golf. For instance, the foursome
of number 1 and number 2 players had
three balls on the green and one on the
fringe, on the difficult par three eighth
hole. This is rarely accomplished by
foursomes of regular men’s or women’s
groups at the Lake.
Fluco coach Bryan Searcy reports
that he has 12 players on his squad this
year, including two eighth graders, who
cannot play in dual meets. Two of his
players are girls.

playing once daylight savings ends, has
already had five competitions, while the
Fluco football and volleyball teams still
have not started their regular seasons.
The golfers have played in two multiteam events and three dual meets. This
was their first meet at home, over the demanding Lake Monticello course.
The Fluco golfers will now travel to
Spotsylvania and Monticello on Sept.
2 and 4. They will then be back at the
lake to host Louisa High and Powhatan
High School on Sept. 9 and 11.Their final
home meet will be on Sept. 18 when
they will host Western Albemarle. The
starting time for home games is listed
as 5 p.m.--however, matches may get

since the 2013-2014 academic year.
• Bruce Patterson, the son of Sonya and
Bruce Patterson of Fork Union, has been
selected to serve as Day Student Commander within Battalion Staff of the
upper school’s Corps of Cadets and is
promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. Patterson is a senior this year and
has attended FUMA since the 2013-2014

been selected to serve as Squad Leader
within C Company of the upper school’s
Corps of Cadets and is promoted to the
rank of sergeant. Vanderpool is a sophomore this year and has attended FUMA
since the 2013-2014 academic year.
The students selected to serve as officers
and non-commissioned officers (NCOs)
in this historic boys-only high school
program reflect the global diversity of the
school’s student body. They come from a
dozen different states including California,
Florida, and New York, as well as several
foreign countries including Belgium,
China, Bulgaria, Russia, and South Korea.
The Corps of Cadets is student-run, with
adult supervision. Cadets are organized into
squads of a handful of boys, led by a squad
leader. Those squads join together with
others to form a platoon of 20 or 30 cadets,
with a platoon sergeant and a cadet officer
assigned as platoon leader. Those platoons
join with others to form a company with
perhaps 70 to 100 cadets led by a company
commander, usually supported by an executive officer and a first sergeant. The companies join together to form the battalion,
with a battalion commander and his staff

This leadership structure oversees the
daily activities of students, seeing to it that
daily chores are carried out, discipline is
maintained, esprit de corps is built, and
each student is surrounded by a positive
atmosphere of achievement and accomplishment. This is not just some roleplaying game with students pretending
to be leaders. Cadet leaders get real-world
experience in team building, leading by
example, the use of discretion in dealing
with disciplinary issues, and motivating
others. This is the kind of practical experience that builds the skills and confidence
needed to succeed in a competitive world.

Two earn the BSA’s highest recognition
Couple recalls
Palmyra’s past
BY PAGE H. GIFFORD, CORRESPONDENT
Cameron Michael O’Dell
Brian Ezekial “Zeke” Zimmer
Cameron Michael O’Dell, of Palmyra
has earned the highest advancement
award the Boy Scouts of America offers
to Scouts - the Eagle Scout Award. O’Dell
will be recognized in a ceremony on
Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. at Grace and Glory Lutheran Church in Palmyra.
A member of Troop 154, O’Dell is one
of approximately four percent of all Boy
Scouts who attain the Eagle rank, according to Scoutmaster Curtis Kidd.
Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges
and successfully complete a community,
church, or similar civic-related service
project to earn his Eagle; O’Dell chose to
install a prayer garden at Grace and Glory
Lutheran Church. The garden was installed
around a peace pole. It has a circular gravel
path, two concrete benches, a boxwood
hedge and several flowering plants.
He has served as a patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, scribe and librarian
with his troop and received The Order of
the Arrow. O’Dell joins other outstanding American citizens who have become
Eagle Scouts, among them former President Gerald R. Ford, Jr., astronaut Neil
A. Armstrong, cinematographer Steven
Spielberg, Sam Walton, founder of WalMart and former CIA Director and Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates.
O’Dell is active at Grace and Glory Lutheran Church where he serves as an
acolyte and has participated in many
service projects. He is a freshman at
Fluvanna County High School where he
is an honor student and is in the Blue
Ridge Virtual Governor’s School.
He is the son of Jeff and Carol O’Dell
of Palmyra.
Brian Ezekial “Zeke” Zimmer, 18, of
Kents Store has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of
America offers to Scouts - the Eagle
Scout Award.
Zeke was recognized in ceremonies
on Sunday, Aug. 24 at Sts. Peter and Paul
Catholic Church, the chartering organization for Boy Scout Troop 138, in Palmyra.
A member of Troop 138, Zeke is one of
approximately four percent of all Boy
Scouts who attain the Eagle rank, according to Scoutmaster Michael Capps.
Each candidate must earn 21 merit
badges and successfully complete a
community, church, or similar civicrelated service project to earn his Eagle.
Zeke earned 28 merit badges, participated in many service projects, and
has held at least eight leadership roles
in Scouting, including Senior Patrol
Leader, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster,
and Chapter Chief of the Saponi Chapter
of Shenandoah Lodge of the Order of the
Arrow. Zeke’s Eagle Service project was
to improve Pleasant Grove park – a resource for people of all ages and many
interests – by constructing a multi-use
bridge capable of supporting both foot
and horse traffic on one of the Pleasant
Grove trails.
Zeke is also the recipient of a $1,000
Harold and Sharon Tate Scholarship
for his contributions to the Scouting
program and is currently attending Piedmont Virginia Community College where
is working on an Associate’s Degree in
Business Management.
Zeke is the son of Ed and Terri Zimmer
of Kents Store.

Margaret and Fred Lewis have lived on Main Street in Palmyra for over 50 years.
A sunny Sunday afternoon in Palmyra
was quiet on Main Street, except for a
couple of women chatting in the front
yard surrounded by a lovely blooming
garden and a white picket fence. Two
people pass the time in front of Maggie’s
House, one sitting in the old front porch
swing. Seeing Palmyra in this moment,
so tranquil, makes one think of how
it must have been 40 or 50 years ago.
Margaret and Fred Lewis, who live on
Main Street, opposite the Palmyra United
Methodist Church, reminisced about a
Palmyra similar to this Sunday afternoon
but much different than we imagine.
Margaret, now 91 and Fred, 88, have
lived in Palmyra for over 50 years. Prior
to his retirement, Fred managed his
own radio and TV sales and repair business from 1958-1990. Margaret kept the
books and took care of their children and
sold TV sets. His son took over the business in 1990 and ran it until 2005.
“It was as good a business as anything
you could get into at the time,” said Fred.
“We had a lot of business from the Lake
beginning in the 1970’s. Put up most of
the antennas. The cable company put us
out of business.”
Margaret grew up in the area and Fred
was a transplant from North Carolina. After
they were married, they moved to Ohio
but not long after returned to the area and
bought the house that once housed the
Midland, the local newspaper. Fred fixed
up a building in the back for the business.
“Paid $5,000 for the house and the lot
back in 1957,” said Fred. In all the time
they lived on Main Street they recalled
one house being built. Nothing much
had changed said Fred except when E.W.
Thomas made the move out of town.
“People came and went,” he said. Jeff
and Mollie Suling lived next door in the
signature yellow house for 30 years.
Where businesses once thrived, only
government buildings remain. Fred and
Margaret agree that the new court house,
the new bridge, new sheriff’s offices
and new library, are a few of the major
changes they’ve seen over the years.
Margaret spoke briefly about her
hobby of collecting news clips, photos
and other items about past events and
current ones. The progress of Fluvanna
has been slow over the years though
growth at Lake Monticello has contributed to population density. Change
has been slower than some would like
but the Lewis’ like the slow pace and
knowing everyone in town.
The biggest changes are the technological advances Fred has seen over so many
years. Fred has learned to adapt and finds
it amazing. He is using a small tablet and
he goes on Facebook and even his TV set
is a new flat screen. Even Fred and Margaret have progressed but still hold onto
the slow, quiet way of life reflected in the
town on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
