Ligament Knee Bracing
You may not know us, but the proFESSIONALS do
For almost 30 years professional athletes needing injury-prevention and post-op recovery assistance have worn DonJoy® braces. You’ll see DonJoy® braces on the court, on the slopes and off-road in over 44 countries around the globe. Our
braces grace the knees of the best and we thought it high time to offer you the same innovation, quality and dependability in Blowout Protection Units that’ll keep you in your game: ARMOR and DEFIANCE® braces. Knee braces like the
pro’s wear, in versatile, off-the-shelf models you can afford, because like the pro’s, you can’t afford to go without the best injury prevention gear around.
DonJoy® was the brainchild of two Californian surfers. In 1978, with more
vision than cash, they set up shop in a garage and used what little sewing skills
they had to make knee braces from torn-up wetsuits and preformed neoprene
sleeves. That was the birth of the first DonJoy® knee brace. Then the fun began
everyone wanted one! DonJoy® now has 1,400 employees and a one-of-a-kind
biomechanics lab. We have continually developed products that not only keep
pace, but set the pace of this market. You simply won’t find a bracing company
anywhere with more focus on research and development.
A brace for every joint and injury
Statistics on the injuries in Motocross show us that not only the knee but also the shoulder, elbow and ankle joints are frequently injured. There is no need to
tell you how quickly a great start to the season can turn into a nightmare in just a few seconds…a bad fall makes the line between success and failure very thin!
DonJoy® is aware of this and has developed through the years a full range of premium quality products in answer to the high demands of athletes; products that
help you reach your goals. In this Motorsport Catalogue we are presenting a selection of our top quality functional products for the joints that need maximum
protection. These products have been tried and tested by athletes and their medical professionals and are designed to help prevent and treat injury. Your safety and
health is our concern! We want you to trust your body, trust your instinct and trust our gear… so go for the protection DonJoy® can offer you!
Armor Knee Braces
Maintaining our original spirit of innovation, the
Armor line brings together the best of our existing
product range and the advice of action athletes like
freestyle motocross pro Gary Taylor and the US Ski
and Snowboard Teams. These and other athletes
have played a critical role in helping us bring
Armor braces to you.
Talk back
1
We count you among a growing group of friends we depend on to stay on top of our game. Friends we can share with and learn from. So if you have an idea about
how we can do better, speak up, we’re listening. After all, two guys shared a bright idea about cutting up a wetsuit and look what happened! It’s this spirit, coupled
with extensive research and development that has been the hallmark of our company for the last 30 years and just like you, we plan on staying in the game.

ACL
What is an ACL injury to the knee?
FOUR-POINTS-OF-LEVERAGE™
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most commonly injured knee ligament. The ACL
controls how far forward the tibia moves in relation to the femur (see diagram) and if the tibia
moves too far, the ACL can tear. The ACL is also the first ligament that becomes tight when the
knee is straight so if the knee is forced past this point, or hyperextended, the ACL can also be torn.
Since 1984, DonJoy’s goal has
been to revolutionise orthopaedic
bracing. Through the Four-Pointsof-Leverage™ rigid cuff and strap
configuration, a posterior force
is applied to the tibia preventing
anterior movement of the tibia.
The ACL is often injured during high action sports activities such as motocross when the athlete
suffers a direct blow, a twisting motion or hyperextension. For example, the hyperextension and
twisting mechanisms can occur when a motocross rider catches his/her foot in a corner. The
tearing of the ligament results in a loud pop and the feeling of instability in the knee. Often the
medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the ACL are injured at the same time.
POINT 1
The femur is anchored
by a cuff placed at the
top of the anterior thigh.
The Four-Points-of-Leverage™ design
is used on the Defiance®, Defiance III®,
Female Fource™, Armor, 4Titude®
and Legend™ braces.
Why do I need my Anterior Cruciate Ligament?
The ACL stabilises the knee and the instability caused by the torn ligament leads to a feeling of
insecurity or “giving way” of your knee, especially when trying to change direction. People with
a torn ACL will feel instability when walking down hills or stairs, cutting/pivoting, starting and
stopping quickly and when their knee is in full extension. The knee may also feel like it can bend
too far backwards.
The symptoms following a tear of the ACL are not always exactly the same in severity for all
people. Typically, you will experience swelling of the knee within a short time following the injury.
This swelling is due to bleeding into the knee joint from torn blood vessels in the damaged
ligament. The pain and swelling from the initial injury will usually go away after a few weeks, but
the instability remains. This physical instability and the inability of the patient to control the knee
require treatment. Many people have the instability treated by orthopaedic surgery to reconstruct
the ligament to increase the stability of the knee and prevent damage to the joint.
UNIQUE INTEGRATION
SYSTEM
The centre of the hinge is just
posterior to the midline and just
superior to the joint line. This
allows points 1 and 3 to compress
soft tissue, isolating the femur and
bringing it forward. Points 2 and 4
draw the tibia posterior, generating
a net differential force, or constant
load, directly over the tibia,
preventing it from moving forward.
POINT 3
A strap across the
back of the lower
thigh pushes the
femur anteriorly.

(articular surface)

(articular surface)

POINT 2
The tibia is anchored by a
cuff placed at the bottom
of the posterior calf.
POINT 4
A strap placed on the anterior
tibia applies an active constant
load, to prevent anterior tibial
translation.

Protection is better than any cure
When it comes to protecting children, only the best is good enough.
Did you know that the custom-made DonJoy® Defiance® brace can be fitted on children from the
age of 10-11 years old?
This custom made knee brace guarantees a perfect fit and the highest level of protection any young rider
can ask for. The DonJoy® Defiance III® is adapted to specific motocross requirements thanks to the use of
an impact guard that also covers the upper part of the tibia and fibula. Thanks to its slim fit the Defiance®
works well under motocross trousers and it doesn’t interfere with the boots.
The young rider’s comfort is assured by chamois or textile liners that also absorb moisture.
Because of its construction, the Defiance® MX prevents the knee from making unnatural movements. It
protects ACL, PCL, medial and lateral ligaments and is the best possible way of preventing knee injuries.
The Defiance® braces also offer extra support and stability to already injured knees.

DEFIANCE® III Knee Bracing
Thanks to the thin construction of the hinges, young riders can keep the contact with the frame and
the reservoir and maintain control over their bike just like they would do when riding without
braces; only in this case they have maximum protection against knee injuries. For children
prevention is better than any cure. They also get to choose from a wide variety of colours for their
Defiance®, so the brace not only matches the young rider’s motocross gear but also meets his or her
personal preferences. After all, why shouldn’t riding in safety and looking stylish go hand in hand?

FMX4EVER
Team FMX4Ever - Passion for safety
Team FMX4Ever has been around for five years. In that short period
of time the crew of team owner and founder Jimmy Verburgh has
established itself quite a reputation in freestyle motocross. The
Belgium based team is now the biggest European freestyle team
and one of the few professional teams worldwide. Team members
include ex European motocross champion Jimmy Verburgh,
IFMA European freestyle champion Nick Franklin, South African
champion Nick De wit, German champion Toby Immler, British
champions Chris Birch and Kris Brock and US top riders Mike Mason
and Ronnie Renner. Many of the riders are also medalists at Red
Bull X-Fighters, the Olympics of freestyle MX. This very colourful
and successful international group competes in all major events
throughout Europe, Asia and the US.
Freestyle motocross is a very spectacular and extreme sport that
holds some risks. Team FMX4Ever have chosen DonJoy® because
they feel the Defiance® brace offers the best protection there is.
“Many other manufacturers produce braces based on a motocross
background. DJO™ has an expertise in the production of medical
supports and braces which comes in very useful when entering
the sports world with injury preventative braces. That is a major
advantage and guarantee for true protection and not just a feeling
of being protected”, says team boss Verburgh.

in 115 professional speedway races around the world. Since 2004, he has been using ARMOR
braces on both legs to protect his knees.
”Speedway is an extreme sport where the riders are
very close to each other. The start of a race is very
important, so everyone gives all they have in the
first bend. Sometimes this causes a crash. Safety
and self confidence means everything in speedway
– if you don’t feel you are well protected, you can’t
do your best in a race. Wearing my knee braces
gives me a feeling of safety and I know I have done
what I can to protect my knees in the best possible
way. With Armor from DonJoy® you get the best
possible design and protection.”
”In 2006 I was participating in one of my Grand
Prix Matches in England and I was part of a crash
in the first bend, hitting the fence at high speed.
Without doubt, I would have had a serious knee
injury if I hadn’t worn Armor knee braces. Thanks
to my braces I could continue the race and I ended
up being 3rd, a very important result competing for
the World Championship.”
