2015 ANNUAL REPORT
SAR Middle and High School students had an immersive education
on the Israeli political system in preparation for the elections.
For weeks, students learned about the governing system, electoral
process, political parties, candidates, and campaigns. Simulated
elections, complete with private ballot boxes and student
registration officials, were held to ingrain students with a connection
to Israel, and the tools to become strong advocates.

Q. Every morning I’m grateful…
A. …for the community we have at SAR, especially the children
who represent our future. Each day I’m lucky to interact with
different kinds of people, on different kinds of issues. Every day
is quite different.
Q. I got into education because…
A. …of the inspiring role models I had. Both of my parents served,
and continue to serve, the Jewish community. I grew up
surrounded by people who made a difference in the world.
And simply, I love teaching.
Q. The educator who most impacted my life…
A. …is Rabbi Yonah Fuld, SAR Academy principal, 1983–1993, who
literally brought me to SAR as a child—he drove me daily from
Queens. He lives with so much passion for what he does, for
Medinat Yisrael, and for children. He modeled for me how to
bring out the positive in people, especially kids.
Q. If I wasn’t at SAR, I might be…
A. …living in Europe, running a Jewish foundation. (Prior to SAR, I
worked with the Lauder Foundation establishing Jewish day
schools in Russia and Germany.) Or, I would be applying to run
a high tech company in Israel (Waze?). I’d love to be training
for the Iron Man, but the three miles we do in Running with the
Rabbi may be more realistic!
Q. The most challenging part of my role is…
A. …balancing the needs and interests of different members of our
community—families, staff, lay leadership—and, finding the time
to give people the appropriate attention.
Q. Three things I expect in my colleagues are…
A. …people of integrity, who are humble and reflective; who listen
as much as they offer advice and opinions; and, who are
optimistic in how they see people, challenges, and the world. I
want colleagues to be thoughtful in recognizing that the world
is a complex place, and there are no one-size fits all solutions.
Q. A long time ago, I learned that success…
A. …follows hard work, appears after many setbacks, and requires
other people.

A. …that I am blessed to spend the day doing something that I
believe in so strongly with colleagues for whom I have the
greatest respect, and learning and talking with kids who are
bright, passionate, full of energy, and a lot of fun to be around.
It’s not just a job; it’s really a part of my being.
Q. I got into education because…
A. …I love Torah and Jewish life and wanted to continue to learn
and share with others. Over the years, I have increasingly
appreciated how much you learn and deepen your
understanding of the world when you dialogue with others
around a text; where you both teach and learn through the
discussion that you are having. That is the best thing about
being in a classroom.
Q. The educator who most directly impacted my life was…
A. …Rav Mendel Blachman, my rebbe in KBY (Yeshivat Kerem
B’Yavneh). His combination of passion for Torah and Judaism, his
openness to the world of ideas and his commitment to working
hard came together in a way that was very inspiring to me.
Q. If I wasn’t at SAR, I would be…
A. …homesick.
Q. The most challenging part of my role is…
A. …teaching how to live the best kind of Modern Orthodox life is
the most noble thing in the world to me. It is also like walking a
tightrope. You have to be willing to constantly assess where you
are and how you are doing, whether you could be doing better
or should be doing it differently. The most challenging part of
my role is to communicate strongly how to be committed to
Jewish life and practice and open to the world in the best
possible way.
Q. My most trusted source of Judaic knowledge is…
A. …I don’t think I can pick one person or text. I love my library
and I love that I have family and colleagues with whom I can
discuss Torah, philosophy, education, and the sefarim that I
read. Books, sefarim, and my support system join together to
provide profound guidance.
Q. If I could pass advice onto the newest generation of Jewish
leaders, I would say…
A. …know Torah, engage the world, believe in yourself and
your people.

TROPHY CASE
The ELC incorporated robotics, computer programming,
and engineering into the kindergarten curriculum under the
guidance of an expert from Tufts University and new math
standards with Generation Ready consultants.
The SAR Math Team, Second Place among 25 schools
in the Bronx Con Edison MoMathlon at Fieldston School.
Michael Schwartz and Shmuel Padwa placed first and
second respectively in the 7th grade competition.
Children learned coding, allowing them to program their own
interactive stories and games utilizing both "Kibo the Robot"
and Scratch Jr.
GRADES 1–5 NEWS
Learning programs expand: Math in Focus to Grade 3, TalAm to
Grades 3 and 4 (including on-site faculty training), Expository
Writing from the lower school to Middle School grades.
Middle School students visited
homebound elderly in Riverdale
as part of a chesed elective.
Sylvia Bersin is a beloved
former SAR parent.
"Band for Today," an instrumental music program, gave
students in Grades 3–5 the opportunity to study an instrument,
while building hand-eye coordination, teamwork, note-reading,
active listening and concentration skills.
The Sensory Gym opened, a unique in-school venue,
allowing therapists to work closely with faculty on children’s
individual needs.

Joseph scored higher than Chidon’s requirements to select finalists, which earned them a
trip to Israel from SAR. Leora and Shoham were
co-regional champions at the qualifying level.

The Matan Bat Mitzvah program added the study of key female
role models in Tanakh, and the life-changing decisions they
faced. The Bar Mitzvah and Beyond Program for Gr. 7 boys and
their families was launched last year to model and teach
halakhot and midot.
Rabbi Rosenberg led the Augmented Reality Adventure
Group, seeking hidden treasures of digital information, and
turning kids into digital reporters, health and fitness coaches,
and superheroes.

Nearly 1,000 members of the SAR community
gathered on Yom HaShoah 5775 to watch
"Witness Theater," presented by Selfhelp
Community Services, UJA-Federation of New
York, and SAR High School. Students worked
with six survivors for the year to share stories,
reflections and history. Faculty Advisors:

PACT was (and continues to be) a

A new course was piloted to guide students through critical

A DISCIPLINED APPROACH TO HALAKHAH
A Halakhah program, hilkhot kashrut, was launched to equip
students with practical information and a halakhic vocabulary.
(In ‘15–‘16, all grades will learn hilkhot shabbat, to understand
underlying concepts and practical implications.)
PROMOTING CURRENT AFFAIRS AWARENESS
The history department emphasized domestic and international
news with the "Israel: World News and Views Haiku," and a news
broadcast. As an example, "The Crisis of ISIS Forum Regarding US
Policy in the Middle East" engaged students in policy debate.
10TH GRADE ZIONISM HISTORY INITIATIVE
The History, Talmud and Hebrew departments used an
interdisciplinary approach to teach Israel’s historical, political,
ideological, social, and religious background. The last unit of the
year, kicked off with a full-day Yom Iyun, was dedicated to the history
of the State of Israel, 1948 to the present.
TECHNION’S ROBOTRAFFIC 2015 ROBOTICS
COMPETITION IN HAIFA
SAR was the only (and first) high school in North America selected to
participate in the International Robotics Competition, at the Leumi
Robotics Center at the Technion. A gift from the Kirsch Foundation
enabled the SAR team to participate. The team was an outgrowth of the
Arduino Engineering Co-Curricular. Four students, Binyamin Kaplan,
Max Orman-Kollmar, Marty Rubin, and Joey Yudelson, represented SAR.
Advisors: Yaron Tokayer, and dedicated parent volunteer Dr. Richard
Kollmar, who created SAR’s Robotics program. Nine international teams
competed alongside Israeli teams. SAR ranked 4th and 7th place in two
of the competitions.

The Varsity College Bowl Team. First Place, defended its undefeated record at

in Jerusalem on Yom HaAtzmaut. (Last year he won the NY regional contest.)

SAR ACADEMY AND SAR HIGH SCHOOL
As we look back over the year,
we take pride in the many wonderful
accomplishments of our students and
staff. It is truly the entire SAR
community that keeps our beloved
school going strong. We acknowledge
almost 1,400 donors who contributed
more than $4.2 million for scholarships
and important school initiatives. Further,
we recognize the many families who
have partnered with us to take our
school to the next level, providing almost
$2 million in capital funds for current
expansion and enhancements projects.
We are well positioned to continue to
deliver the best-in-class Judaic and
secular education for our children, with
exciting and meaningful opportunities for
students to find their paths and passions,
all while on solid financial ground.
The overall focus of this past year has
been to deepen students’ connections
with Medinat Yisrael, strengthen our
commitment to STEM education,
increase SAR’s co-curricular offerings,
support our talented and compassionate
faculty, and involve the greater
community in school programs and
fundraising pursuits.

Tuition, grants, and other revenue cover 88.1% of our
needs. The remaining 11.9% is $3.9 million (net), which
was secured through fundraising campaigns.

HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2009
SAR HS alumni now number more than 850 in the 12 short years since the
school’s inception. SAR Academy has graduated more than 2,200
students since it was established in 1969. Our graduates represent a

The SAR High School lobby
is getting a new look thanks to the
generosity of the families of the
Class of 2015. During the summer of
2015, construction began to make
the space more welcoming and
reflective of the school’s mission and
core values. Thank you to the more
than 100 families that participated in
this gift of over $35,000! We hope
that all of our new alumni come to
visit often and take pride in the fact
that they literally changed the face
of SAR HS!
SPACE TO LEARN, PLAY, AND GROW @ SAR ACADEMY
Enhancements to SAR Academy began in the summer of 2014 and will
continue through the fall of 2015. SAR Academy will add 20,000 square
feet to school facilities, including a new beit midrash, a second gymnasium,
eight new classrooms, and a new playground. Thank you to those who
have generously given to make these wonderful projects a reality. SAR
students are indeed the beneficiaries of your investment. We continue to
seek partners in this endeavor, and naming opportunities are available.
