The school was first hosted in Canoga Park, Calif., for a limited number of participants. The school has since grown in attendance to more than 300 warfighters a year and is now hosted at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Ariz. Since those humble beginnings, more than 3,500 fighter pilots, intelligence officers, air defenders and government engineers have attended what is now called the Warfighter School. In early 2000, the AIM-9X® Sidewinder was also added to the curriculum, increasing the technical exposure and knowledge of AIM-9X to the warfighter. This, in turn, makes the warfighter more lethal and more survivable in combat. We at Raytheon Missile Systems are proud to host our nation’s warfighters from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force and bring our very best to ensure their success in combat. 1 UNCLASSIFIED UNCLASSIFIED Tucson Guide Introduction This booklet is a reference for Raytheon’s visitors and guests. It lists the wonderful places to see, dine, lodge, shop and golf during your stay in beautiful Tucson. It does not list everything, which leaves the door open for you to explore and sample while in Tucson. The city is divided into four quadrants — northeast, northwest, southwest and southeast. The dividing lines are Broadway Boulevard for north and south and Stone Avenue for east and west. Interesting Facts About Tucson The city of Tucson was founded in 1775, but the region is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in North America, with settlements dating back to at least 800 B.C. When it was founded, Tucson’s population was a little more than 3,000. Today, approximately 1 million residents call the Tucson area home. Tucson is also known as the The Old Pueblo, named so for the presidio, or adobe fortress, that marked its initial boundaries. The outline of the fortress is still visible, laid out on the sidewalks of downtown Tucson. How hot does it get? The highest recorded temperature is 117°F, which occurred on June 26, 1990. The average high temperature is 82°F and the low is 55°F.
