Rosé: A Rising Star
Rosé is experiencing a global renaissance. In the U.S., retail sales of
imported rosé wines have seen dynamic growth for seven years running, with sales in 2011 increasing at more than seven times the rate
of total table wines. Imported rosé sales jumped more than 26% on
dollars last year, compared to only 3.7% for total table wines
(Nielsen).
And according to the French trade commission, exports of rosé
François Millo
Director, Provence Wine Council
wines from Provence to the U.S. have seen double-digit growth rates
each year since 2003. The largest percentage gains were recorded
between 2010 and 2011, when exports grew 62% on volume
and 49% on value. For the three years from 2008 through 2011, the average annual growth rate
was 39% on volume and 35% on value.

The Birthplace of Rosé
Provence, the oldest winegrowing region in France, has been making
rosé wines since 600 BC. Today Provence devotes 87% of its Appellation
d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) wine production to rosé. The vast majority of
these wines come from three appellations:
» Côtes de Provence AOC, which includes three sub-regions:
» Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire AOC
» Côtes de Provence Fréjus AOC
» Côtes de Provence La Londe AOC
» Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence AOC
» Coteaux Varois en Provence AOC
While the quintessential Provence rosé is
pale and dry, the region produces wines
with striking aromatic and stylistic diversity. Distinct terroirs and
winemaking traditions create rosés of unique character and identity.
In addition, the vineyards of Provence yield full-bodied reds and
delicate whites.
Rosé Vinification
Rosé is a category of wine that stands alongside red and white. Like red
wines, rosés are made from red grapes. In both cases, the wines take their
color, flavor, and character from the dark skins. But whereas red wines are
made by leaving the skins with the juice during fermentation, rosé
producers allow only a brief period of skin contact before draining the
pink-tinted juice from the skins (via gravity or direct pressure) and starting
the fermentation process. The result is an elegant pink wine with the
character of a red and the crispness of a white.
Provençal winemakers make rosé by producing single-variety rosés in individual vats. The final cuvée is assembled from these batches. The most
common grapes used are Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Tibouren, Carignan, and Cabernet
Sauvignon.
Trade Support
The Vins de Provence U.S. office provides support for wine retailers, importers, educators, and
other members of the trade. We invite you to explore the sales toolkit and other resources in the
Trade section of WinesofProvence.com. We also welcome opportunities to partner with the trade
