ow! I had a fun problem this issue.
I had so many amazing articles that
I could barely fit them all in! It took some
doing, but I got it all in. This issue is cram
packed with shoot articles galore! Which
makes me a super happy camper! So thank
you so much to everyone who submitted articles and pictures for this issue, I appreciate
it so much.
With summer fast coming to an
end, there are only a few titled championships left before the Fastest Gun Alive. If
you have not seen an article from your
club’s titled championship featured in the
Gunslinger’s Gazette, be sure to talk with
your club about submitting one for the next
issue, as the Fall Issue will fill up fast.
As I am writing this, planning is
well under way for the Fastest Gun Alive.
Wow, did that come up fast again! I’m not
sure how it just sneaks up on me every year
like that. I can’t wait to see everyone, so
please come up and say hello. I am usually
in the General Store, or aimlessly wondering about (I blame that on the lack of sleep
for that whole week, haha).
I will be updating the CFDA website and facebook page soon with all the
wonderful pictures I have received. I will
make some announcements as soon as it is
done. Speaking of our facebook page, we
now have over 5,000 members! Wow! Talk
about an amazing tool to get information
out to everyone. I have also noticed more
and more club facebook pages popping up

as well as club websites. If you send me the
links, I would be happy to add this information to your club contact information so
people have a variety of ways of contacting
you. Every little bit helps when trying to
attract potential members.
In this issue, the 2015 Shoot for
the Stars Scholarship Recipients are also announced. Congratulations to these 5 individuals! What a great accomplishment this
is and really showcases what amazing youth
members we have in this sport. And a big
thank you to all the individuals and clubs
who have donated and taken the time to do
fundraisers on the behalf of the Scholarship
fund. Without your generous efforts, this
would not be possible.
Once again I would like to give a
shout out to Wild Shot for keeping track of
all the Top Gun Points this year. There are
some close points in both men’s and ladies,
so it will be interesting to see how the next
few titled championships play out to see
who makes it in the top 10. Good luck to
all!
Best Wishes!

Inside The CFDA
By: Quick Cal, Executive Director
to surrounding areas to support other events
as well, after all building regional support is a
“two-way street”.
H
owdy!
Wow! What an exciting and active
season so far. With great matches going on
from coast to coast and our attendance growing,
it is an exciting time for Cowboy Fast Draw!
Just a few years ago, there were thoughts that
we should perhaps limit the amount of CFDA
Titled Championships because of concern that
we were spreading our membership a little
thin with so many new titles appearing. Match
attendance had leveled out with some events
even experiencing modest declines. After
drilling down into the actual registered shooter
data, we learned something very encouraging.
While many of our shooters that had historically
traveled great distances to make most of our
events had actually declined, those attending
our matches were newer members located in the
regions surrounding the events. It’s obvious that
in many areas of the country where the CFDA
membership base has expanded, there is more
choices for quality competitive opportunities
that most areas of the country didn’t have just a
few years ago. The good news is that due to our
memberships expanding both regionally and
nationally most CFDA Titled Championships
are now seeing an increase in entries. In some
areas, club shoots are now exceeding what we
were drawing at CFDA Titled Championships
less than a decade ago. We also have a number
of new members who are discovering what fun
it is to have a reason to travel to new places,
visit clubs and compete in CFDA Titled
Championships! It’s becoming a life-style for
many of our members.
Is there any such thing as, too much
Cowboy Fast Draw? I don’t think so. In fact,
the more there is the better it is for everyone.
Members & Building Support Are the Key
Building regional memberships are
the key to having successful clubs and contests.
It’s no secret, activity breeds activity, it’s true in
almost all things. I have had many conversations
with CFDA Clubs that are interested in hosting
a CFDA Titled Championship. I’m not hesitant
to tell them that if they need to have our
members travel from all over the country in
order to make a successful event, then their area
is not developed enough for a major contest.
There should be enough members in a state
or surrounding states to support a CFDA State
Championship, shooters traveling from out of
that region should be considered “icing on the
cake.” It’s also key that club members travel
CFDA Demographic
As we build membership we are
constantly searching for the type of folks that
tend to be interested in what we do, that’s called
a “demographic” in marketing terms. So, to find
folks interested in us, I suppose the first thing
we have to do is define the basic type of folks
that we are.
I think that most of our members
are people who tend not to be afraid to try
something new. We generally like the genre of
the American Old West time period, but most
of us are not considered re-enactors. We tend
to be independent thinkers, who don’t mind
riding along with positive leadership. We don’t
like B.S., but we do like kidding around and
having fun. We place a high value on honesty
and integrity. We love America and generally
are not bashful about standing up for God and
country.
So who are we? Let’s find out how
to find more folks just like us. When I see
some of the totally whacked out and off-base
organizations in our country with tens of
thousands of members, and we have only had
a little over 4,000 sign up for CFDA. In the age
of the internet when we should be finding one
another more easily, I just know that we are
missing something somewhere.
There are some agenda items on this
year’s Marshal’s Muster Agenda where we are
going to discuss these things and many other
aspects of how to grow our clubs and our sport.
I look forward to this important round-table
discussion with our U.S. Marshals.
Records Are Made To Be Broken!
As they say, “Records are made to
be broken.” As our shooters are getting faster
and trying harder amazing things are happening
in Cowboy Fast Draw. Since my last column,
both the Men’s and Ladies’ World Record
were broken! First, at the Western Territorial
in Genoa, NV, Master Gunfighter (CA) broke
Kid Creggar’s .298, and established the new
Men’s Record at .295! Then, at the 4 Corners
Territorial in Pagosa Springs, CO, Honey
Badger (CO) broke Stormie Weather’s (NV)
.360, with a .359! Can it go even faster, I think
so. There sure are a lot of folks practicing and
gunning for it.
Back Ground Noise in Contest Areas
There have been increased complaints
at some contests regarding loud talking,
shouting, or making noises that can and have
disturbed shooters on the firing line.
We must always understand that our
contests are as much a social event as they are a
competition. If you are the type of shooter that
insists that no one talk or carry on with general
activity while you are on the line, then my advice
is to invest in a good set of ear plugs. Shooters,
families and guests are constantly interacting,
talking, joking around with each other, and
laughing. We never want to discourage that
kind of activity, it makes our events fun and
we need to keep it that way. However, we also
need to show consideration and refrain from
disruptive sounds, like shouting, banging
and really loud laughing at a time that can
disrupt a match in progress.
One of the most exciting times in our
sport is when we have the opportunity to join
other spectators for our fellow competitors that
have made it into a Championship Shoot-off,
the bigger the championship title the bigger
the excitement and the noise that comes along
with it! A great announcer can ignite the crowd
and create a special electricity in the air that is
unique among all shooting sports. We should
emulate other individual sporting events where
competitors must display great amounts of shot
making skill and precision, like in tennis or
golf. Cowboy Fast Draw is even tougher than
those in the regard that we must also react to
a start light. In such venues, there is a time to
cheer and make noise, there is also a time to be
respectful and quiet.
According to the CFDA Gunslinger’s
Guidelines, this issue is addressed in the
Conduct Violation Section on Page 26. While
this technically only applies to contestants,
Range Masters and contest officials are well
within their rights to apply warnings to noncompetitors as well. In the 2nd paragraph
it says, “Contestants must also refrain from
loud talking, shouting, and other actions that
disturb shooters on the line, especially after the
shooting commands have begun.” So please
have fun, but also remember to be considerate.
Stick Around & Clap For the Winners
I hate to leave contests early. I think
we should all try to plan, whenever we can,
to stick around and clap for the winners. If
everyone just took off as soon as they were shot
out... Who would be there to clap for you, if
you should win?
We all lead busy lives, and I must
admit, I had to leave a two contests myself this
year just before they were concluded.
The first, I left the Great Northwest
Territorial early (actually at about 4 p.m.)
because as Mayor Pro-Tem, I had to be on stage
for the Memorial Day Service, held in Fernley
at the Northern Nevada Veteran’s Cemetery
the very next morning. This is the largest such
celebration in Nevada and is attended by the
Governor, Senators, and Congressmen. But,
much more important than Politicians, I needed
to be there for our Veterans.
The second, I barely caught my plane
coming back from Odessa last month, and it was
the last flight I could book that day to get home.
It was either book that flight or stay home, since
it only gave me one day to get home, pack and
leave with Alotta Lead for Colorado.
I understand, life happens. We all
have jobs, families and commitments. But,
please consider trying to plan your schedule
so that you can be there for the whole thing,
whenever you can. But, I’m sure that most
hosts would rather you come and support their
contest than not to come at all because of a tight
schedule.
And to Host-Clubs... When planning
your contests, try to do your best to not make
the last day of a multiple-day shoot an all-day
affair. It sure helps the folks that travel to your
contest and have to hold down a job and family
commitments back home. We should remember
that most of our members are not retired.
‘72 Open Top & Other 1800 Reproduction
Firearms
According to CFDA Rules, period
correct firearm types have always been within
our rules, regardless of what calibers they
were actually produced in during the 1800s.
For instance, there was never a percussion/
conversion revolver that I know of that was
produced greater than .44 caliber during the
1800s, yet they are produced today in .45 Colt.
Obviously, with modern metals it makes it
possible to produce these types of firearms these
days in 45 Colt and still meet SAAMI Specs.
There are also other examples as well. These
are still considered “faithful reproductions” of
period firearms.
Apparently,
there
have
been
differences of opinions and confusion. An
Official Rule Interpretation and Clarification,
along with the back-up reasoning, has
been posted in the Rules Section on www.
CowboyFastDraw.com, according to my
responsibility as the Director of CFDA, as
laid out on page 11 in the 8th Edition of the
Gunslinger’s Guidelines.
Training Your Reactions
Last issue I wrote extensively about
Cowboy Fast Draw being the Fountain of Youth
of Sports. In addition, I covered in some detail
how developing your conditioned reflexes and
reactions, at any age, not only makes you a
better shooter, but can offer great benefits that
can have a positive affect on many aspects of a
healthy, quicker and younger thinking lifestyle.
I ended that portion of my article by promising
to show you, “how you do that.”
I had been working on a new accessory
for the Gunslinger Timer System, it is now done
and ready. You will find an ad somewhere in this
Gazette introducing the “Gunslinger Reaction
Trainer.” It’s only $60 and plugs into the “blue
port” of a Gunslinger Timer. It replaces the
LED Start Light and Sensor normally attached
by the Cat 5 blue cable running to your target.
The unit has a small LED Light right on the
end of it, that duplicates how the Start Light
works on a target. Plus, it has a Red Button
on the surface, that when pushed records a time
on your timer. I suggest placing your thumb
Gunslinger’s Gazette
on the button, since your thumb is the first part
of your body that moves when beginning your
draw. It makes practicing reactions very easy,
even while sitting in your easy chair. They are
also fun to have reaction only contests with.
Gunslinger Laser Target Debut at FGA
At the FGA, we’ll also be introducing
our newest accessory to the Gunslinger Fast
Draw Timer Laser Target! It’s finally done also
after a year of research and development. And,
is designed to work with just about any laser on
the universal setting. It is an 8” round target,
which is 1/3 size and placed at 1/3 distance,7’.
This item has been requested by many of our
members, who don’t have a home practice
range.
Also, we plan on introducing the
Gunslinger Laser in 2016, that will be on a
frequency that will only record a time with
the first one thousandths of a second of its
pulse, instead of the several hundredths of a
second that most other lasers on the market
have as a pulse, and some that stay on almost
indefinitely. Fastest Gun Alive
It’s coming together! What a show
we are putting together for you! At the time of
writing this column we already have over 160
shooters registered for Cowboy Fast Draw’s
Signature Event! Our goal is 250 Shooters,
CAN WE MAKE IT? If so, we will have
five 6 Lane Ranges operating for the main
match on Friday. We’ll see, it would set a new
attendance record for sure and since we are in
a record setting mode this year, WHY NOT! I
guess I shouldn’t end every sentence with an
exclamation mark, but as you may have guessed
we are all very excited....
There is a 4-Page FGA Spread in the
center of this issue of the Gunslinger’s Gazette.
It should have all of the information you need.
We will also have extra Gazettes at registration
for everyone just in case they leave theirs at
home. Also, we don’t send out confirmations.
Instead we post a complete list of Who’s
Coming on the CFDA Telegraph. This is also
where we post updated information and even
long-range weather forecasts starting 10 days
ahead of the event, with updates through the
Monday before.
I would like to thank everyone who
makes the FGA possible! It takes a lot of talented
people who contribute in so many ways. Our
key members who travel here every year and
hold key match official positions, our dedicated
members who not only shoot the match but help
out in so many ways like posse marshals, range
masters, announcers, scorekeepers, promoters,
set-up and tear-down crews, registration table,
CFDA General Store, and Town Folk Alley.
We also thank all of our sponsors, vendors and
The City of Fallon. It just takes a monumental
effort to put on the greatest event in the 60-year
history of organized Fast Draw.
WE APPRECIATE EVERYONE WHO IS
PART OF IT!
See You at the Fastest Gun Alive!

By: Alotta Lead, CFDA Membership Director
e’ve really been blessed with some
fantastic weather Northern Nevada has
been experiencing lately, more like September
weather than summer. Not too warm during the
day and the nights cool off down to the high 50’s.
Perfect temps! In spite of a historic drought,
our plants and trees are doing better than we
had hoped, with consistent rain moving through
every week or two. For those of you that saw the
“State of the Art” garden boxes Dead Eye Kid
built for us (our son) on Facebook, the plants
have overgrown and overflowed everywhere!!
When I started planting early May, I started a
diagram of where everything is planted, when
I planted it and the amount of water that each
garden box would need. Well, somewhere along
the line my handy dandy little diagram got lost
and now it’s a big surprise of what is growing
where. Seriously, I still don’t know half of what
the plants will produce. Corn stalks- check.
Tomato plants- check. Zucchini & okra plantscheck. Those are all easy, but a lot of the plants
look like zucchini plants, but are not. What a
surprise it will be to see what we have…
Quick Cal and I made some really
fun trips this year, (he made more than me) to
some great CFDA events. Every one of our host
clubs, their members, supporters and all of the
volunteers deserves a big hand! Job well done!
Our most recent trip was to Pagosa Springs,
Colorado for the CFDA Colorado State and
CFDA Four Corners Territorial Championships.
Held in picturesque downtown Pagaso Springs
and hosted by the San Juan Shootists. Mongo,
Wench and all the SJS, hats off to all of you,
fantastic job! Also, beautiful trophies were
given out at both Colorado Championships that
were hand made by San Juan Shootist member
“Cruiser”.
Everywhere we went this year, the
areas and countryside’s were all different and
beautiful in their own way. The historic Fort
Worth Stock Yards for the 2015 CFDA Texas
State Championship, hosted by the Big Thicket
Bushwackers. Saint Augustine, Florida, for the
first Florida State Championship, hosted by “Von
Zipper” and the Ancient City Conquistadors,
where the “Oldest City in America” is going to
hopefully draw us back again soon, so we can
spend more time exploring its interesting and
haunted past. We’re all so fortunate to be able
to criss-cross our beautiful country to enjoy
spending time with the best folks in the world,
our CFDA Family!!
I would also like to give out a big
congratulations to Honey Badger for reaching
her ultimate goal and setting a New CFDA
Ladies’ World Record time of .359!!!, at the
2015 Four Corner’s Territorial. We all knew
that K.K.Kid and Honey Badger were on the
hunt for that title all weekend long, with both
coming close so many times. Great shooting to
both of them!
FASTEST GUN ALIVE TIB-BITS &
THINGS TO KNOW~
As the weeks zoom by, we’re getting
closer to the 2015 FASTEST GUN ALIVE-
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP of COWBOY
FAST DRAW. There are a few things that we
will ask our shooters while at this event.
AT THE REGISTRATION TABLE WHEN
SIGNING IN
Be ready to show your CFDA
Membership Cards. As all contest hosts are
expected to do, we will be asking you to show
membership cards or a life member’s badge at
the registration table when signing in. If you
are close to expiring, we would appreciate you
renewing before you go to the FGA, is just saves
our volunteer’s time during the registration
process. Call me at the CFDA office and I will
be more than happy to renew you over the phone
to expedite your renewal. As you know, it takes
approximately 2 weeks to process and get your
cards back to you. In the event you renew a little
late for any of our events to receive your card
in time, please request a confirmation by email
at [email protected]. I’ll email you a
conformation that can be used while awaiting
your actual membership card to show up.
Please note that CFDA Office will be close from
September 25th, until October 6th, because our
entire team is committed to setting up, running
and tearing down the FGA!!!
DRESS UP TIME!
Everyone....please get your “Sunday go
to meetin’” clothes out and bring them
along with you to the FGA.
PLEASE
wear appropriate western clothing at this
event (and at all CFDA functions across the
country for that matter). Please refer to page
7 in the CFDA Gunslinger’s Guideline book.
Page 7 Quote: “All competitors and personnel
in shooter’s areas are required to dress in
appropriate clothing and we strongly request
guest and family members be dressed in this
theme as well. Competitors are expected
to dress in western-themed clothing at ALL
contest related activities, INCLUDING
dinners, social events, and awards
ceremonies, unless Host directs otherwise.”
Keep reading to what is not allowed......
Thank you......we appreciate it your effort.
Let’s really make this a year to
remember with all the wonderful, colorful
western clothing we have hiding in our closets.
Bring it out, dust it off, and show it off!! The
best dressed contest goes on for several days
overall, so be part of our game and join in.
Dress up when you go out on the town for
dinner.....the town folk of Fallon love seeing
all of you in your western finery, and beside,
some of the restaurants will give you a discount
if you show up in your western garb! Pretty
cool! For family members, we hope they will
attempt to join in with the fun, and shooters, we
really want to see western-themed clothing at
all the FGA functions, please, no regular street
clothing. We know that there will be cameras
and photos taken during all of our activities
throughout the week and weekend. We want to
not only enhance our own atmosphere, but we
also want to show the public and the spectators
attending the event what we’re all about. If
you happen to be in a photo or win an award,
it is our policy not to publish those photos in
the Gunslinger’s Gazette if you are not in theme
clothes. All we ask is please try your best, and
we thank you for that.

Regulator Report
H
owdy all y’all.
The Regulator Posse is out and
about doing Range Master classes in the
territories. We’re beginning to think about
the agenda for the Regulator meeting at
this year’s Worlds in Fallon, NV
Our sport continues to grow.
We are adding many new clubs and new
shooters which is great!
We know that our motto is
“Safety first, Fun second and Competition
third.” Much of our range safety begins
with the Hand Judge positioned behind
each shooter. The Hand Judge is not just
the next shooter, but is an important part of
our overall safety. Let’s talk a little about
hand judging.
Hand Judging Pointers
The Hand Judge is a vital part of the safe
and fair operation of a CFDA match.
Many times hand judging is overlooked or
considered a menial task when in fact the
Hand Judge is the first line in shooter safety
as well as fair competition. It is OK for new
shooters to help hand judge a shooter, but
trained Range Masters should see that new
shooters know what the responsibility of a
Hand Judge is. The Hand Judge in most
contests will be the next shooter on the line
on the lane they are called to hand judge.
Billy the Kid and Annie Oakley shooters
should not be Hand Judges.
The Hand Judge
responsibilities:
has
three
main
1.
Assist the shooter. This is a fun sport. We
need to try to help each other.
2.
See that after the set command has been
given, the shooter does not commit any
violations such as moving the gun in the
holster, rocking the hammer or putting the
finger in the trigger guard before the light
comes on.
3.
Confirm hits and misses on the target.
At some local matches and at
all titled matches the Hand Judge will
hand ammo to the shooter. If you are not

familiar with your shooter it is helpful to
know how they load and reload during the
bout. Ask them. For example shooter A
may load 5 and unload after every shot but
not reload until they get down to one left.
Shooter B may load two then unload and
reload after every shot. If you are hand
judging shooter A then you don’t have
much to do with the ammo. If you are
hand judging shooter B then you need to be
ready with another round after every shot.
New shooters may also need assistance in
loading or unloading.
As a Hand Judge you may offer
suggestions to your shooter especially if
they are a new shooter. You might ask the
shooter if they would like for you to spot
misses for them. If you didn’t see a miss
don’t make something up. Just say you
didn’t see that one. Be careful not to “Over
Coach” seasoned shooters as it may hinder
their concentration. Help and encourage
your fellow shooters.
When the shooter has loaded the
gun and holstered it the Hand Judge should
sit down. This will let the Range Master
know that the shooter is ready. Hand
Judges should position themselves so that
they can see the shooter’s gun hand and a
light. It doesn’t have to be that shooter’s
light since they all come on at the same
time.
If a shooter has an issue during
the bout then the Hand Judge should
stand up behind the shooter so that the
Range Master knows that there is an issue.
Always talk to the Range Master and not
the announcer. If there is a question about
a hit or miss on the target pair your shooter
is on then both Hand Judges and the Range
Master should go down range.

Do not allow the Shooter to un-holster
their gun for any reason until, the “Load
and make ready” command is given by
the Range Master.
Check for eye protection. It is mandatory.
Ear protection is recommended and
required for the kids.
No live ammunition is allowed in the area
– check gun belts.
No more than 5 rounds may be loaded
in the gun. The hammer must always be
down on an empty or fired chamber.
Always see that the shooter remains facing
down range when their gun is loaded.
Remind the shooter of the 170 Degree
Rule if you see their barrel start to wander
while loading, unloading or shooting. Be
prepared to control them if you are in
position to do so.
•
When a bout is completed give the
command, “Unload and show clear.”
Then stay with the shooter and observe
the process. Visually inspect all chambers,
and then give the command, “Gun clear.
Hammer down and holster.”
Important! Stay with the shooter until
the gun is holstered before allowing
them to turn around and leave the line.
You may save them from receiving a
penalty.
Safety first, Fun second, Competition third.
Have fun and smile a lot.
See ya on the line soon!

2015 MINNESOTa STATE
CHAMPIONSHIP
By Dobbs
O
watonna, Minnesota Hi Folks, Dobbs here, from the North
Star Bandits. Our own Minnesota State
Shoot was a hoot! Set up was hammered
out on Friday. All went well with little
difficulty, except for heat and humidity.
Friday evening folks filtered
in for socializing and practice (without
a backstop, of course.) Welcomes were
warm and banter very cordial, with a few
hilarious stories from competitions gone
by thrown in for good measure.
Saturday began
with the Pledge
of Allegiance and
safety
meeting.
When the show
started, we had
shooters
and
spectators from all
over the world...
and even part of
Wisconsin!
Some
heavy
hitters in both
the
mens
and
womens class fell
by the wayside early. That left a chance
to win a Minnesota State Championship
to folks who do not get one too often. In
the women’s championship, Dame Quick
placed #1, Lightnin placed 2nd and Dakota
Rose placed 3rd. In the men’s shoot,
Marshal BK Gunner was #1. (I think he’s
like 60 years old!) It just shows that not so
slow and steady can win a race. The #2 spot
went to ‘bOlder’ Vaquero. The semi-retired
Whiskers walked away with 3rd place.
We had some youth shooters
also. These young folks are very good
shooters as well as great people. Fast
and Furious took 1st place, 2nd went to
Shotgun Slade, Dangerous Dylan was
3rd and Hanny Oakley 4th.
These days our club is not
as large as it used to be. But, we try
to put on as good a show as we can.
We appreciate all the help given us
by friends from other clubs. A special
thanks goes out to Salty Dog, Two
Bit Pat, Boot Hill Bryce, Miss Cristy,
Boulder Vaquero and the other folks
from Wisconsin and South Dakota.Oh
yeah, a very special thanks to Grandpa
McMuffin and Hanny Oakley, who
stuck around in the heat and sun to help
clean and pack up. Hats off to all who
showed up! Thank you very much…

THE FINAL RIDE
BY TEXAS JOE aka/ Joe Royer
This was inspired when I heard the news of the death of Lane Frost, a fellow
Oklahoman and professional bull rider, whom I had visited with the day before
his death at Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1989.
It was the last day of the week up in old Cheyenne
and the excitement was thick in the air.
The bull rider got ready to do for money and fame
what most men in this world wouldn’t dare.
He was ready to gamble when he slid in that chute
cause he’d drew a bull that was real mean.
He rosined his riggin and pulled and pulled it down tight
and got ready to live out his dream.
With his hat pulled down, he gave Chapman (bull fighter/rodeo clown)
a look that said, “Son we’re ready to go.”
So when the gate flung open that bull shot out
like a freight train gettin ready to roll.
That ol bull twisted and torqued like a Cadillac spring
on a hearse that’s out of control.
And eight seconds can feel like eternity
when you’re ridin for all the gold.
That ol bull did his job like the cowboy on top,
you know it was one hell of a ride.
What the bull didn’t know cause they’re just there for the show,
he was takin this cowboy for his final ride.
When the buzzer went off and the cowboy got down
he knew he was a winner that day.
But the bull wasn’t finished so he spun around
and headed the cowboy’s way.
It was all like a nightmare after a beautiful dream
when the cowboy got gored in the side.
The crowd jumped to their feet as the cowboy went down
they knew they’d just saw his last ride.
It was over that day for this son of the west
and with his last breath he went back in his mind.
To think of the woman and the friends that he’d left
when this cowboy took his final ride.

with Sheriff Rango crowned Billy the Kid

ongratulations to all this year’s recipients of the Shoot for the Stars Scholarships.
While in the beautiful town of Pagosa Springs Colorado the board of directors had
a meeting over good food at Boss Hoggs. It was discussed and agreed upon that we
would not only give scholarships for this year but guarantee 2 to four years depending
on the upper education each recipient chose and the results given to us by the selection
committee. The money for future years has been moved to a special account that will
guarantee funds as long as the student meets the GPA requirement and the scholarships
will be sent out each year. If a student fails to meet the requirements, the funds set aside
for that individual will be transferred back to the general account.
Applications for the 2016-2017 school year will be available on January 1, 2016.

committee. “Most of the
youth rules we have today were written through the experience gained through
the training and development of Sweet Pea as a youth shooter”.
While attending Eagle High School in Eagle Idaho she maintained a 3.4 GPA
and graduated with a total of 10 college credit coming from BSY, ISU and
NNU. She was active in various clubs and was a member of the marching band
and symphonic band and also served as section leader and vice president and
then president of band council. She has been accepted to not just one but two
colleges. Elyssa will attend University of Idaho this fall. She has been awarded

Wyatt Trautman aka TNT
Wyatt is an active member of CFDA and a member the Dakota Gunslingers. Wyatt has worked
the last three years at Running Farm and Fleet where he is a hard worker which in this day and
time is sometimes hard to find in a young person.
Wyatt graduated in the spring from T F Riggs High School in Pierre South Dakota
with a 3.8 GPA. Wyatt has been accepted to the South Dakota School of Mines where he
will major in Metallurgical Engineering. It is the process of breaking down metal ore and
producing a product from it. There are many divisions that he can specialize in. Such as the
medical field, mechanical field or space and flight exploration. There are only four colleges in
the United States that offer this and the South Dakota School of Mines is one of them. Upon

Sawtooth Showdown
7th Annual
Leather & Lace
By Curley Calhoun
I
daho City, ID - Well, this is going to be a
short story, because there just aren’t words to
describe ladies day in Idaho. It’s all about the
experience.
Seventeen ladies arrived in Idaho
City on Febraury 21st, to celebrate the 7th
Anniversary of Leather & Lace. You would
think they came for a best dressed contest, but
instead they are all dressed up and ready for a
gunfight. There are more gowns, garters, and
corsets than Idaho has potatoes (well almost).
The men are all gathered around ready to handle
the work for the day, hand judgin’, gun cleanin’,
and even servin’ lunch.
As Curley gets the ladies signed in,
he has them choose a time they believe they
can hit so they can win a special prize. After
the Pledge of Allegiance, the first prize of the
day is given away to the 7th lady to sign in. This
is the 7th Anniversary, isn’t it? Mustang Annie
collects the first gift and it’s a Shitsu neck and
shoulder massager. That was only the beginning
as Curley starts in with six years of Leather &
Lace trivia and another 8 gifts are given away to
those with the correct answers, and we haven’t
even fired a shot yet.
The ladies are getting a little loud and
unruly so we load ‘em up and get ‘em shooting,
and then bang…right there in the first round,
Two Talker hits her number, a .637, and wins
the special prize we spoke of earlier. It was a
$50.00 SpaFinders gift card. The excitement
carries on with more prizes given away for
hitting the light, or even a bolt on the target, and
sometimes, just for fun, even for missing three
in a row! Heck, even Curley could have won a
prize. Just when you are thinking it is getting
time for lunch, Mustang Annie hits her number,
a .633. That’s right another $50.00 SpaFinders
gift card is given away. So now you’re thinking
those two ladies are out of the running for
another gift card. Nope, they just had to choose
a new number to hit and they are right back in
the running to possibly win another one.
Lunch…Did somebody say lunch?
The men gather and start serving the ladies
with a feast fit for a gunfighter looking to win a
championship. For dessert, we were treated with
a birthday cake for young Lucas’ 7th birthday.
Yep, another 7 for the day, and a future CFDA
gunfighter...
After lunch, we got back to business.
Annie B Goode remains clean going into the
5th round, continuing to be the front runner.

As we head into the 7th round, more than 30
prizes have been given out and 56 X’s. Just
then Sagebrush Sal hits a .777 to win herself
a free entry into a side match at our upcoming
Sawtooth Showdown, Return to Lonesome
Lowman, match in September.
Now seven rounds are over, and we
are getting our Fantastic 5 ladies all rested up as
the men gear up for the men’s gauntlet, where
the men are seeded in the position that their
lady finished the first 7 rounds. This is a quick
2 out of 3, 1X, last man standing. Nineteen men
stepped up and when the smoke cleared Tucson
was standing tall, winning the coveted Leather
& Lace garter and bragging rights for the year.
Now back to the ladies, our 3 time
Leather & Lace champion, Misty Few, earns her
way into the 5th seed by having the faster time.
She is looking to regain her title. I think she is
partial to this one, but there are four other ladies
eyeing the same prize. Our 4th seed is a new
comer, Miss Chevus. Just ahead of her is Two
Talker our 3rd seed. Our 2nd seed is Mustang
Annie, who has been shooting very well, and
this brings us to our top seed, Annie B Goode,
who shot 7 rounds clean, and hoping to take her
first Sawtooth Showdown championship.
Let’s get them to the line and settle
up this gunfight. First, Miss Chevus out guns
Misty Few with 3 well placed shots, and then
welcomes our 3rd seed, Two Talker, a veteran
gunfighter. Six shots later, Miss Chevus sends
Two Talker over to shoot with Misty Few, and
she moves on to challenge Mustang Annie. Four
good hits in a row, good shootin’ for sure, but
it just couldn’t match Mustang Annie’s speed.
Meanwhile, Misty Few and Two Talker still
looking to earn the buckle, shoot four shots
that put Two Talker in 5th place and Misty Few
looks to be back in winning form to now take
on Miss Chevus with a chance to repay her for
the earlier X. The two now battling back and
forth, take it to 2 to 2. Misty Few sends a mid- .5
down range, sending Miss Chevus off the line
to claim her first trophy in fine fashion, a cool
4th place. Back to the winner’s bracket, our top
seed, Annie B Goode, steps up and challenges
Mustang Annie. I think an Annie will win
it…sure enough, they matched hit for hit, but
Mustang Annie takes the cat bird seat. Now the
room is going quite as Misty Few, our 5th seed
takes on Annie B Goode, our 1st seed. Both have
1 X and both wanting to move on the challenge
Mustang Annie for the buckle, trophy, cash,
cover of Vogue, new F-150, and a box of animal
crackers…oh, where was I? I may have gone off
track on those last three items. 3 shots rang out
and the same light was flashing all three times,
misty Few placed three low .5’s in a row! Annie
B Goode, who had a great showing all day,
locks in 3rd place.
Can you spell DRAMA? Misty Few
will now square-off with Mustang Annie, who
gave Misty Few her first X way back in the very
first round. Mustang Annie sitting in the cat bird
seat is ready for the battle. At the light, nerves
settle in and both miss the target. Finally, Misty
Few places 3 out of 5 shots to take the first round.
Now both with 1 X each, swap lanes to do it
again. Mustang Annie puts four hits in a row all
in the mid-to-upper .5’s, but Misty Few flashes
the light three times to win an unprecedented
four Leather & Lace championships. Long live
the queen…and congratulations to Mustang
Annie for earning 1st Runner up.
Now it’s time to get down to the
men’s favorite part of the match, the ladies
gauntlet. The ladies are called up based on their
place in the match to face the gauntlet of men,
who wait eagerly to present their lady shooter
with a special gauntlet gift. This year, it was
a vintage floral handkerchief filled with hearts
and kisses…chocolate, that is. You’d think this
was already too much fun, but you’d be wrong.
We still had a couple prizes to give away. Yep,
two more $50.00 SpaFinder gift cards went
unclaimed, so back to the score sheets we went.
If you remember the first two gift cards were
given out for hitting the time selected at the
start of the match. So this time, we looked for
those who shot the closest to their time. Well,
Misty Few (does she ever get tired of winning?)
missed her time twice by only .001 giving her
the first of the remaining two cards. Denali
earned the second one for also missing her time
by only .001.
Well, so much for a short story. Come
on, did you really think I was capable of a short
story? A fun time was had by all so the three
Curley’s can rest a bit until we kick it off for the
ladies again next year.
See you next year in Idaho City! –

Wax Bullets
Try ‘Em, You’ll Love ‘Em!!!
A precision process is used to create the most consistent and accurate wax bullet on the market. The bullet
is a “Boat Tail” design, with the tapered end going in first. This wax bullet is designed to break apart on
impact, reducing bounce-back projectiles. The wax-polyethylene formula allows for the least amount of
waxing in barrel rifling. The wax formula is also designed to load well on a progressive reloading press
reducing fracture bullets significantly, making it the #1 bullet used for CFDA Titled Championships.

MAY 22-24, 2015
By Sagebrush Sal
C
aldwell, ID - The Crazy Woman
Range came alive with a bang on
Friday, May 22, 2015 for the opening day
of the 7th Annual Great Northwest Territorial
Championship hosted by the Treasure Valley
Gunslingers and Snake River Gunslingers.
First up on the schedule were the 3 X, 3 out
of 5, Last Man Standing category matches.
With the men shooting on the A Range and
the ladies dueling it out on the B Range, we
had whittled our way down to our winners
by mid-afternoon.
Dinner that evening was provided
for shooters and their families by GNTC
at the Treasure Valley Gunslingers’ indoor
range, the home of Legally Loaded and
Bounty Hunter. The category awards were
given following dinner with the first place
winners as follows: Ladies Traditional –
Diamond Rio; Men’s Traditional – Oregon
Ranger; Ladies 49er – Lefty Lipscomb;
Men’s 49er – Marshal Cooper; Ladies
Senior – Ambrosia; Men’s Senior – Caleb;
Ladies Super Senior – Mustang Annie;
Men’s Super Senior – Gentleman Jim;
Grand Lady – Lady Drifter; Men’s Old
Timer – Short Keg; Men’s Golden Gun
– Sundowner; Ladies Shootist – Annie B
Goode; and Men’s Shootist – Wild Shot.
The Main Match got underway
Saturday morning with 79 men, 30 ladies
and five youth registered for a total of
114 shooters. What a fantastic turnout!
Shooters rode into Idaho from California,
Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon,
Texas and Utah. This year we had several
new shooters who were not only new to
this event, but new to Cowboy Fast Draw
as well! Before the match began, PG
Taylor called all active military and veteran
shooters front and center to be honored,
recognized and thanked for their service to
our country. We certainly would not be able
to enjoy our great sport without the sacrifices
of our military servicemen and women.
Then it was time to get down to some
serious (but fun) shooting. At the end of the
day, 40 men and 15 ladies were left to vie for
the championships on Sunday. Silent auction
items were available for bidding throughout
the day and raffle tickets were sold for Ruger
and Uberti pistols.
The Saturday evening dinner was
hosted once again by the Great Northwest
Territorial Championship and Treasure Valley
Gunslinger members at the indoor range.
After dinner, a live auction was held for a
concealed carry purse, a lady’s elk ivory ring
and an original framed oil painting on cigarette
paper by Blue Pony. A big thank you goes out
to those who donated items not only for the
live auction but the silent auction as well.
Shooting resumed bright and early
on Championship Sunday as we started
working our way down to our top five men
and lady shooters. Since our youth shooters
were busy with school on Friday, their
category matches were held Sunday morning
as well. Our winners were Tank (Billy the
Kid), Sea Shooter (Annie Oakley) and Spud
(Men Junior). After completion of the Shoot
for Loot category matches, we were ready to
begin our championship rounds.
For the youth divisions, our first
place winners were Sea Shooter (Annie
Oakley), Tank (Billy the Kid), Annie B Goode
(Lady Junior) and Spud (Men Junior). The
overall youth winners (from first to fifth) were
Tank, Sea Shooter, Angel Eyes, Sheriff Rango
and Kid Rango.
Our top five seeded ladies (from first
to fifth) were Mustang Annie, K K Kid, Lefty
Lipscomb, Annie B Goode and Legally Loaded.
Annie B Goode worked her way up from fourth
seed to shoot it out for the championship with
Mustang Annie. Annie B Goode was shooting
some pretty awesome times with that big ole
long gun of hers, but after two rounds the third
winning shot belonged to Mustang Annie from
Idaho, our 2015 GNTC Ladies Champion!
This left Annie B Goode in a very respectable
second place with K K Kid placing third, Lefty
Lipscomb fourth and Legally Loaded fifth.
Over on the men’s side, our top five
seeded shooters (from first to fifth) were Tin
Bender, Marshal Cooper, Old West, Dangerous
Dave and Oregon Ranger. After losing his first
round, Oregon Ranger came back the hard way
to shoot it out with Marshal Cooper for the
championship. Marshal Cooper prevailed to
win the Men’s GNTC title for the second year
in a row. Tin Bender placed third (he was the
only shooter out of both the men and ladies to
make it to the finals with no Xs), Dangerous
Dave fourth and Old West fifth. The top
three finishers just happen to be a replay
of the top three finishers at the 2014 World
Championships!
Our Shoot for Loot winners were
Trinity (.450 and under), Tucson (.451-.560),
Ricochet (.561-.650), the Texan (.651-.750) and
Cimarron (.751 and over). The highest placing
couple was Tin Bender and Diamond Rio. The
highest placing man and lady shooters for the
Great Northwest Territorial area were Oregon
Ranger and Mustang Annie which earned them
entries to the World Championships. Our
Spirit of the Game winner was Wild Shot.
The gun raffle winners were Taz
(Ubertti) and Hunter Dan (Ruger). All of the
shooters’ names went into a hat at no charge
for a second Ruger and the lucky winner was
Gray Wolf. We may need to ban him from
future gun raffles as he seems to have a habit
of winning, but word is he gave the gun to his
better half, Ms. Hettie, so we will give him a
pass this time!
A great big special thank you goes
out to Legally Loaded and PG Taylor, the trail
bosses of this event. A big shout out also
goes to Wild Shot and Mustang Annie who
spent lots of time in the Schoolhouse drawing
rounds, entering scores and keeping track
of the X counts. The Crazy Woman Range
received a fresh coat of paint this spring and
was in tip top shape for the shooters thanks
to the hard work of members of the Treasure
Valley Gunslingers. A big thanks also to Miss
B Haven and Calamity, owners of the range,
for all their help and hard work as well. A
thank you also to our sponsors: L & J Pallets
(who sponsored the Junior buckles), RK
Gunsmithing, Alpha Omega, Hap Tallman, D
& B Supply, Lowe’s, Sportsman’s Warehouse,
Boise Gun Company, Joyce Creations, C & R
Wax and Krazy Kate.
Proceeds from the category matches
and auctions were donated to our local Elks
Club for their charities and to the Horizon
Seekers, a group of young men and ladies
from the Notus School District who are raising
money for a trip to Washington DC and New
York. They were our food vendor for this
event, providing breakfast, lunch and snack
items for our competitors and supporters.
Also known as the “Rowdies,” they took care
of target cleaning and running score sheets to
the Schoolhouse.
Thanks to all who made the trip to
Idaho for this year’s event. It was a great
turnout and we were blessed with perfect
shooting weather. (We may have Red
Ryder from California to thank for that…
after checking our forecast, he brought four
different coats with him as he was convinced
the weather was going to be anything but
what it turned out to be!) Good luck and safe
travels to all shooters as you head out for the
fall season of CFDA titled events. We hope
to see you in Idaho in 2016 for the 8th Annual
Great Northwest Territorial Championship!

dueled it out more than once in our regular
monthly matches but this time their goals
were to try and win the Men’s Division in
our biggest event of the year! Both had a
little trouble getting going but eventually
Dangerous Dave was able to win the round
and move on to take on 3rd seeded Gambit.
Buckwheat James had to wait for a while as
Gambit and Dave fired off 13 shots before
Gambit finished the round with a .445
sending Dave to the losers bracket. Our 2nd
seeded shooter, Tucson, stepped up to take on
Gambit while Dangerous Dave & Buckwheat
James filled lanes 3 & 4. It didn’t take but 3
shots in the .4’s for Tucson to send Gambit
packing and Dave & Buckwheat fought to a
2-2 tie before Dangerous hit the target with
a .497 to give Buckwheat James 5th place.
Then Gambit and Dangerous Dave went at it
again with Gambit winning the round leaving
Dave in 4th, while over on lanes 1 & 2 our
#1 seed and two-time defending champion,
Tin Bender was able to give Tucson his first
“X” of the shoot-offs with a .388 and 2 low
.4’s. That sent Tucson to shoot it out with
Gambit. Gambit put 4 shots in a row on the
plate, winning the round and that left Tucson
in 3rd place. Now Gambit had the daunting
task of having to win 2 rounds in a row to
become Men’s Champion. They both toed
the line and Gambit was able to put 3 out of
4 on the target while Tin Bender went cold
thus giving both shooters 1 “X” a piece. The
Range Master moved them down to lanes 3 &

4, center stage. They loaded up and the “Line
was Ready”. Tin Bender found the target with
a .386, then a .389 going up 2-0. “Shooters on
the line….. Shooters Set”……the light took
what seemed like forever to come on and as
Tin Bender leaned farther & farther back in
his stance, THE LIGHT CAME ON! They
both drew and fired, Gambit hits with a .488
but Tin Bender’s bullet hit the target as he fell
backwards having to catch his balance as his
light started blinking….a .363!! The crowd
went wild for both shooters!! Gambit was
our 2nd place finisher and Tin Bender became
our 2015 Grand Teton Gunfights Men’s
Division Champion for the third year in a
row!!
The weekend’s fastest time in the
Youth division was Tank with a .536!! In
the Ladies division Debbie Sioux fired off a
.546 and in the Men’s Tin Bender had a .363!
The best shooting percentage for the Youth
Division was Mischevious Mustang with an
astounding 86%! Lulu Belle shot 80% in the
Ladies Division and Stainless Steel shot 81%
in the Men’s Division! Nice shooting!!
Before and during the shoot we
sold raffle tickets for a brand Cimarron
single-action .45 revolver!! When the tickets
were all sold we drew the winner ….Russ
Weaver!! He was one of the shooters that
came to our Town Folk Alley on Friday night
and tickets!!! Pretty sure this will help him
become a new Eagle Rock Outlaw member
now that he has a gun!! Congratulations
Russ! After the shoot we had a drawing for
a FREE 1-year membership to our club and
drew out Melissa Bristol’s name!! She’s been
our photographer for the last 3 years and
now she’ll be shooting with us next year!!
Congrats to Moe!! Her alias will be “Soul

I want to thank each and every

this event another big success!! Thanks to
all the other “Shooter Sponsors” from ours

WALKING LIKE A
COWBOY...IS MORE
THAN OK HERE!
By Boss T L3239
A
t a recent
practice
match the topic
(as always comes
up) was about
which is more
important: being
fast or accurate!
The discussion
was
dragging
along and I lost
attention
until
some mentioned
a hammer was
snagging on their
black corset and it had to come off!
My attention was quickly re-focused
when Holli-Day commented that she was needing
an adjustment to her garments. This concept has
never really been address by any of us cowhands but
then none of us wear a corset to practice sessions.
Several of our fillies bring a whole new concept to
the term “dressed to play.”
But, then remembering back to other
shooting matches, I do remember those over the top
cowboys and cowgirls who go that extra mile to look
like they came right out of a saloon in the early west.
There was a photographer at the Fastest Gun Alive
contest taking pictures of men with cowboy style
beards. He had found over 50 shooters to pose for
him. So I decided to write this article to recognize
those shooters who take the chance to look “cooler”
even if you shoot like a drunk gunslinger on a threeday binge.
Now let us start our conversation with a
closer look at the plainsman or prairie chicken from
the American Western period (1867-1920) from the
Head to knees. Foot wear will be covered in our
next segment entitle: Boy, those are some big ones
Cowboy!
Cowboy hats started around 1865 by
John B. Stetson. His five dollar oversized brim hat
did not catch on right away but was advertised to
block sun and rain on the open range. Until this
time, felt hats were mostly cast offs from formal
wear that were re- shaped to serve the cowboy
better. The cowboy hat really did not catch on until
the turn of the 19th century.
Inquiring minds want to know why Tonto
never wore a hat but the Lone Ranger was always
wearing a 10 gallon white hat? I will not even
comment about the second generation Tonto with
the dead bird on his head.
In 1906, President Roosevelt made the
straw Panama hat popular by wearing it in several
photos and while attending meetings. So all you
CFDA shooters wearing Panama straw hats, more
than likely, gunfighters never wore one.
Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis (1873)
hold the patent on indigo pants (became blue jeans
in the 1950-60s). These were denim cut down
version of pants around since 17th century called
“waist overalls.” There is even a web site that list
25 uses for old blue jeans like making them into pot
holders.
19th century cowboys most likely never
wore black leather waist belts. Men’s pants only
came with high waist buttons for suspenders. It was
not until WWI that belt loops appeared on men’s
uniforms with the lower waist required to wear a
August/September 2015
belt. After the war, men started wearing black belts
with large buckles in or about 1920.
If you are looking for a clothing period
reference book then look into The Look of the Old
West, by William Foster-Harris. Check out the
chapter called “Civilians Out West.”
For holsters, see PACKING IRON, Gun
Leather of the Old West. This book is out of print and
expensive but there are copies around in many gun
stores. Another great in-print book is Guns of the
Gunfighters by Doc O’Meara. Besides traditional
old west cowboys it also has several chapters on B
Western Movie stars if you always wanted to play
that role. A Gene Autry or Annie Oakley costume
would be great at a CFDA match.
So if you want to be like one of our
young-ins, Miss Prickly Pear and dress like the
Old West, you might take a visit one of your local
western wear stores or online. We have one here
called Wild West Mercantile. You can log onto their
website: www.merc.com and they will send you an
email with a discount code. If you are a smaller size,
there are plenty of sale items in the store to make you
look perfect. They have an extensive ladies dressing
area including all the goodies worn in the old west.
If nothing else, it is a great stop for costume ideas.
If you are a cowboy or cowgirl on a
budget, try any Goodwill or Salvation Army store
for clothing items. There are some great accent
pieces there. My shooting ammo box is made from
a fifty cent cigar box purchased at Savers.
So let’s up the scores and dress for
success. What the heck, go over the top grow out
your beard or how about waist length hair. Live the
cowboy spirit every day. No article this month is
without a happy birthday wish to Roy Rogers. He
will celebrated his 104th birthday this year out on the
open range.

Gunfighters. They had become good friends
over time.
Both had become lighting fast and
they were here to attempt to break the current
Ladies World Record while competing and
doing the best they could in the titled matches.
The current Ladies World Record of .360 had
been set by Stormie Weather a couple of years
ago. These gals had tried many times to break
it. There was something in the air at this match.
It just felt right.
During the State Championship K. K.
Kid seemed to have the mojo. Mojo is a term
very well known in the Odessa Texas area. It is
associated with a prominent High School there,
so it seems appropriate to use the term here and
that K. K. Kid had tapped into it. She had a bout
where she shot a .361. All she needed to set the
new Ladies World record was a .359 or lower.
However, the best she could do was another
.361. Close but no record. K. K. Kid continued
to shoot lighting fast times during both the State
and Territorial Championships. She finished
second overall in the State and Third overall in
the Territorial. Her .361 was the Ladies fastest
time in the State Championship.
When the Territorial Championships
began on Saturday that feeling was again in the
air. Honey Badger seemed to have the mojo
this time. She had placed Ninth overall in the
State match with a fast time of .363, only two
thousandths off of K. K. Kid’s fastest time. She
went to the line and managed to shoot a .359
during the bout. All she needed was another
shot within three hundredths of a second of
her .359. Honey Badger could not manage to
back up her .359 during the bout. By rule she
was allowed three shots by herself to back it
up. Then BANG!
There it was!
A .383. Well
within the three
hundredths of
a second to
validate
the
.359 as the new
Ladies World
Record! AND
THE CROWD
GOES WILD!
We
thought
Cruiser, Honey
Badger ’s
husband, was
going to lose it.
K.K. Kid
His reaction alone
was priceless!
Honey Badger finished 14th overall
in the Territorial match and had the Ladies
Fastest Time with a new Ladies World Record!
K. K. Kid’s fastest time in the Territorial match
was a .362; just three thousandths of a second
slower than the new record.
Stay tuned. I’m sure these two gals
will continue to go at it giving it all they’ve
got while entertaining the rest of us. Let’s not
count out Stormie Weather either. I’ve heard
that see may return to competition at this
year’s World Championship in Fallon. That
should make it a lot more interesting! Who
knows, there may be others out there unknown
to us now who are practicing away and being
tutored by the best of the best. Maybe that
young gal in the desert? We’ll see …

Installing Dead Eye EZ Loaders into CFDA Brass
is no problem, but getting them set to a consistent depth can take time. Reducing casing capacity is a key component of achieving both maximum and consistent velocity. The EZ Loader
Speed Press is the fastest way to set any brand of
wax bullet at a consistent depth.
Gunslinger Reaction Trainer
The Gunslinger Reaction Trainer is a ground breaking training tool not only for the sport of Cowboy
Fast Draw, but for any activity which requires the honing of reactions and conditioned reflexes. I’m no
doctor, but I have have been studying human reactions for over 40 years and I believe that training one’s
reactions through a conditioned reflex offers many benefits. Tuning your mind to be in better sinc with
your body, promotes a younger and quicker thought process which enhances all kinds of activities,
even making you a more alert and reactive driver. Cal Eilrich a.k.a. Quick Cal, Director of CFDA

CFDA Crossword Puzzle
Due to space limitations in this Gunslinger’s Gazette because of so many great shoot articles, we will continue the Crossword Puzzle in the Fall Edition.
Crossword Puzzle Winners From The Last Gunslinger’s Gazette!
We had 3 entries that were all postmarked on the earliest day received. The clearest winner was: Specs, CFDA # 2940!
However, I discovered that I had made an error on the crossword puzzle itself. Do you see, James Courtwright, the bottom
across name on the puzzle? It should have actually been spelled James Courtright, there is no “w” in Courtright. Our clearest winner,
Specs, gave the correct name and just left a space between James and Courtright, since there was one too many spaces.
We also had two other entrants that were postmarked on that very same day. They both used James Courtright’s actual middle
name “Isaiah” instead of James, so they were definitely referring to the same person, also known as “Long-haired Jim”. They obviously
used Long-haired Jim’s middle name, just because of my mistake. So, how is ol’ Quick Cal gonna get out of this one? The only fair
thing to do is to declare a tie between all 3 entrants!
So, all 3 winners: Specs #2940 (Old Pueblo Gunfighters - Tucson), Lil’ Diamond #3592 (Wisconsin Peacekeepers - Wisconsin
Rapids), and Dog Iron #4112 (Green Country Gunslingers - Tulsa) are all going to receive a box of CFDA Brass (50ct)!
Just don’t tell Alotta Lead that I messed up......
(She won’t know it unless she reads it here, cause I ain’t gonna tell ‘er...:) Quick Cal

We are committed to building the foundation of CFDA through Affiliated Clubs. The existing clubs can always rely on CFDA for a helping hand in dealing with any issues that need to resolved. Alotta Lead is the Membership Director, Quick Cal is always available to work with existing clubs or “club in the works”. If you
are new or existing member of CFDA and want to get a club started in your area give Alotta Lead a call and he can get you posted on the “Club in the Works” section. The Regulator Posse can also be a great resource for new clubs. To update information, please send information to [email protected].

A Friendly Sport that promotes Firearm Safety,
Integrity, Sportsmanship, and The Cowboy Way.
The Guns
Single-action revolvers, factory chambered for .45 Colt caliber,
with non-adjustable rear sights such as: SAA Colt, Colt Bisley,
1858 Remington conversions, 1875 Remington, S&W Schofield
and faithful reproductions thereof, plus most Ruger Vaquero
models. The external parts of the revolver must match factory
stock contours and made of original type material: i.e. hammers
must not be bent in any way. No trigger shoes, no mods to the
trigger guard or grip frame, etc. Front sights are optional and barrels must be a minimum length of 4-1/2”, except in the Shootist
Category (7-1/2”). Hammer knurling may be smoothed.
The Holsters & Gun Belts
1800’s-style Mexican Loop, Slim Jim, and California Pattern
holsters or leather rawhide construction. The over the belt-style
holster will be worn on the side of the leg only. No cross-draw,
shoulder, buscadero, contemporary Hollywood or steel lined holsters are allowed.
Ammunition
95% of ammunition used in Cowboy Fast Draw is .45 colt casings that are specially modified to accept 209 shotgun primers
and no gun powder. Velocities reach about 650 fps. Only in major competitions Cowboy Fast Draw Cartridges are used, they
must be loaded by CFDA approved reloaders.
Targets
The standard Cowboy Fast Draw target is a 24” round disc with
a start light in the center. The target will measure 50” from the
ground. White lithium grease is applied to the target to track all
wax bullet hits.
Competition Timers
Digital timers must time to the thousandth of a second. Sanctioned contests must use target with impact sensors.
Shooting Style
Most folks use a thumb-cocking method, but fanning is allowed.
Trigger finger must be out of the trigger guard. If used to cock
the hammer the off-hand must not be placed in front of the body
before the start light comes on.
Contests
Contests are shot elimination style, best 2 out of 3, or 3 out of 5
shots per round. The standard contest is luck of the draw man vs.
man elimination.
Gunslinger – 15 ft.

Clothing
1800’s period clothing is strongly recommended. Western cowboy, including working cowboy clothing is acceptable. Western
boots or moccasins are acceptable footwear. Western-style blue
and black jeans are acceptable.
Motto
“Safety First, Fun Second, Competition Third!”
Safety
One of our primary goals is to educate as many people as possible in the safe and proper use of firearms. Even though we use
wax bullet ammunition, we treat them as they were live ammunition and observe all established range safety rules.
