An MVP Performance in the Kentucky Futurity

LEXINGTON, Ky--My MVP (Cantab Hall) had his day in
the sunshine on Sunday at The Red Mile as he won the fifth
and sixth races of his life to lay claim to the coveted trophy
in the 120th Kentucky Futurity.
He took his elimination heat and final of the Triple Crown
event for trainer Tony Alagna, driver Mike Lachance, and
owners Brittany Farms, Joe Sbrocco, and the Modern Family Partners.
The winner was bred by Martha and Steve Brown's
Dunroven Stud, and the Browns, longtime stalwarts among
Bluegrass breeders, were wearing big smiles at The Red
Mile after the race.
The Futurity was
vitiated by the absence of class leaders Market Share
and Googoo
Gaagaa.
Hambletonian winner Market Share
opted to race in a
$10,000 late closer
yesterday rather
than race heats in
the America's oldest
trotting classic.
The leftovers
comprised what
many people said
was the weakest
Kentucky Futurity
field in recent years.

Heat winners Archangel and My MVP went at each other
during the third quarter of the Futurity final. Archangel and
driver Tim Tetrick had moved to the front early in the mile,
but when Tetrick slowed the trotting tempo, Lachance was
out of fourth and attacking with My MVP. Lachance took aim
on the leader and had pulled ahead of Archangel as they
entered the stretch. Once clear on the lead, the bay colt had
to hold off the late chargers, first Little Brown Fox and then
Appomattox. Archangel faded badly in the final stages.
"It doesn't get any better, especially when it's unexpected,"

said Lachance after the race. "My MVP had been a nice
colt all year, but he never showed that he could beat this
kind of field.
"He just had a good day," continued the Hall of Famer.
"The last three or four starts, he wasn't at his best, but
today he was."
Trainer Tony Alagna, enjoying a Red Mile meet he'll
always remember, said, "If any horse deserved a major
stakes win, it was this horse. He's knocked on the door all
year. He never gets the respect he should, but everything
worked out today. I am glad for the horse, glad for Mike
[Lachance], glad for the partners and a little bit for myself."
Reflecting on the 2012 Grand Circuit meet at Lexington,
Alagna said, "We brought 24 horses here and definitely
wanted to show some support for the meet. The horses all
showed up and it's been a lot of fun."
With 13 named into the Kentucky Futurity, the event was
split into eliminations.
The first elim was a ragged affair as Archangel held off
Little Brown Fox and Another Amaretto was third. They
were the only three in the field of six that stayed flat. Gym
Tan Laundry paced behind the gate and was never a factor
while Fogelberg broke early and Lindy's Jersey Boy broke
late.
Tim Tetrick moved Archangel to the front going into the
first turn while Little Brown Fox sat in the pocket. Yannick
Gingras edged Little Brown Fox out entering the stretch but
never posed any threat as Archangel sailed home by a
measured length in 1:53.1
"He's come a long way since I first drove him [in his first
career start]," said Tetrick. “He's a nice horse to drive. I just
lucked into the drive behind him. I didn't have anything in
the race and I was happy to drive. I was just in the right
place at the right time. I don't think two heats will bother
him."
My MVP got up in the very last stride to take the second
elim over Appomattox and Money On My Mind. The winner
was in last place as Solvato led the field into the stretch,
but when the leader tired the rear guard surged past him.
Money On My Mind loomed the winner with a hundred
yards remaining, then he surrendered to Appomattox and
Scott Zeron. My MVP was coming even faster and got up
to win by a nose in 1:52.
"I was very confident in this horse and confident that
Mike Lachance would give him a shot," said My MVP's
trainer Tony Alagna afterwards. "He's always shown that
he's a horse that prefers to have a target. We tried him last
week on the front in the late closer. That's definitely not his
game on the front. Today they trotted that third quarter
enough to allow us to get involved, and he finished up.

Kentucky Filly Futurity
Win Missy B (Conway Hall) was the toughest gal in central Kentucky-or at least in the Kentucky Filly Futurity-as she
bravely fended off all challengers to win in the two heats
1:52 and 1:52.1
Pre-race favorite Check Me Out was unable to catch Win
Missy B in their elimination heat and was then withdrawn,
as was planned, from the second heat.
In the final, Ron Pierce put Win Missy B on the lead past
the quarter and let D'Orsay ride shotgun outside her during
the third quarter. Pierce sat chilly with Win Missy B as he
was confident that D'Orsay could not sustain her challenge.
In late stretch, Hambo Oaks winner Personal Style came

In the first elim, Oasis Dream stepped quickly past pacesetting Real Babe to take the lead in the backstretch, then
gamely defended against threats from Superstar Hanover
and then Chilitodayhottamale to win in 1:53.4.
The 1-9 favorite Check Me Out was outgamed by rival Win
Missy B in the second elim as she won for new driver Ron
Pierce in 1:52. Both Check Me Out and Win Missy B were
parked out a long way in the elim with Check Me Out getting
to the front first and then yielding to her pursuer.
When Check Me Out tried to bounce back to victory in the
stretch, she couldn't catch the leader as Win Missy B was
¾-length clear.
Trainer Charlie Norris said, "Ronnie got her out of there
and didn't let her [Check Me Out] get away from him right in
the beginning. She settled in good and that's what she
needs. She's been getting better all week and we've been
trying to do things differently with her. She's been real relaxed. It's all about the first few yards with her."
Tim Tetrick made no excuses for Check Me Out.

Allerage Farms Open Trot
Chapter Seven (Windsong's Legacy) had no trouble in
continuing his dominance over his older trotting rivals as
he easily took the $131,200 Allerage for trainer Linda
Toscano and driver Tim Tetrick.
Chapter Seven was caught outside in the field of six
around the first turn
and didn't gain the
front until they started
down the backstretch.
Soon it was game over
as he sprinted clear of
Mister Herbie and Arch
Madness in 1:50.2, just
a tick off the world record for trotters on a

"It would have been
a lot better if he had been able to come from behind," said
co-owner Richard Gutnick. "He gets a little lazy at times
when he is on the front end. He much prefers it the other
way."
Allerage Farms Mares Trot
Frenchfrysnvinegar (Angus Hall) cooked her rivals with
a 1:52 win in this $199,200 event as track announcer Sam
McKee said she left the gate "like a scalded ape."
She stepped out to a commanding lead early in the race
and never looked back.
The Swedish invader Tamla Celeber was the first to take
a shot at the leader, but it was quickly apparent that
Frenchfrysnvinegar wasn't waiting for anyone. Jody Jamieson and his mare coasted home by 2-1/2 lengths as
Beatgoeson Hanover edged Tamla Celeber for second.
Allerage Farms Open Pace
The Cancelliere brothers -Tom and John-had reason to
celebrate late in the program as their hobbled hero Bettor
Sweet subdued his rivals with a 1:48.1 mile as the afternoon turned into evening.
He defeated Aracache Hanover and Foiled Again
"That was great, absolutely great," said owner John
Cancelliere after the race in the winner's circle.
Golden Receiver shot away from the gate to take control
after the start, but David Miller came calling first-over with
Bettor Sweet at the 5/8-mile pole. He put away Golden
Receiver and then was under a hard drive to hold off
Aracache Hanover.
Allerage Farm Aged Pacing Mares
Drop The Ball (Western Terror) outbrushed a quartet of
female foes to win the $70,000 Allerage Farm in 1:49.2 for
Yannick Gingras. Androvette set all the fractions with
Swinging Beauty, Ginger And Fred, Drop The Ball, and
Rocklamation politely following.
When Rocklamation moved forward from the caboose
she was followed by Drop The Ball. As the mares turned
into the stretch, Drop The Ball swung wide and came home

officially in :25.4 to win easily. Rocklamation saved second
and Androvette held on for third.
"I used her way too hard in the Milton," conceded Gingras.
"She is very, very special and she felt good today."
Early in the program, the track held a winner's circle ceremony honoring the memory of people who made lasting
contributions to harness racing and who died in the past
year. Among those honored were John Cashman, Jr., Hugh
A. "Andy" Grant, Stan Bergstein, Gene Riegle, Tom
Thomson, Lloyd Arnold, Stew Firlotte, Geoff Stein, Paul
Spears, Jim Ewart, Herman Brickel, Bart Glass, Peter
