From the Director
Happy summer to all! It’s been a fantastic season weather-wise this year, especially
on the weekends, giving us great evenings under the stars for Asphalt Cinema, our
outdoor movie series that wrapped up its 5th season August 17th with a screening
of Over the Hedge. Hope you took advantage of the fun! I thank our local merchants
who joined in with game booths and give-aways, and our sponsors Fairview Hospital
and the Ohio Lottery.
The weather also produced some beautiful Sundays at the Kamm’s Corners Farmers
Market! The market attracts enthusiastic shoppers from all over the west side. Although
that same weather also meant that produce had been slow to arrive, the fields are
yielding a bountiful crop now. If you haven’t been to the market in the last couple of
weeks, you won’t believe the variety of foods available, including sweet corn! See the
center of the magazine for details, and visit our website for a complete list of music,
health activities, horse-drawn wagon rides, and other attractions that accompany the
market every week.
And speaking of attractions — calling all barbecue aficionados! On Sunday, August
26th, Chuck Yarborough of The Plain Dealer will join me at the market at 11 a.m. for
a demonstration of “low and slow” smoking techniques for Texas brisket and pork
shoulder. There will be plenty of fun and samples! Come on up and join in. Learn to
smoke meats from rub to plate.
Additional cooking demonstrations at the market in August and September include
chefs from Pearl of the Orient, Johnny Mango, Stino da Napoli, and Great Lakes Brewing
Company! See www.kammscorners.com for complete details.
Our once-a-month e-newsletter, chock full of timely neighborhood news, continues
to grow its subscriber base (now numbering over 700). If you want to be the first to
know what’s up in Kamm’s Corners, sign up at our website. We now have a Farmers
Market e-newsletter too!
Finally, I want to congratulate Councilman Martin Keane on his election to Cleveland
City Council. He is a smart, witty, and down-to-earth family guy, and I am confident
he will serve us all well. Congratulations Marty!
Enjoy the rest of the summer, and as always, let us know how we’re doing.

News from Ward 21 and City Hall
Dear Friends:
Summer is nearly over with Labor
Day just around the corner. Soon our
children will be off to school and the
leaves will begin to change.
I would first like to take this
opportunity to thank all of you who
voted on July 3rd. The turnout for the
special election showed the entire City
of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County
that Ward 21 cares. We are a proud
and active people, who exercise our
most sacred right regardless of the
date or circumstance.
I was certainly humbled and
overjoyed by the entire experience.
You really never know the great
people we have in all of our
neighborhoods until you knock on
their doors and ask them for their
support. One thing is clear, the roots
in Ward 21 run deep. Regardless
if fourth generation or new to the
neighborhood, the ties that bind West
Park are strong.
The rains of August 7th, challenged
us all, but some more than others. I
have compiled a list of those affected
and have forwarded it to the Director
of the Sewer District for his review
and inspection. Governor Ted
Strickland announced that disaster
assistance is available through the
Ohio Department of Job and Family
Services for victims of the recent
floods. Please call 216-987-7000 for
more information.
Vacant homes and airport noise
have also had an impact on everyone’s
summer. We must all work together
on vacant homes by contacting my
office, banks, lenders, homeowners,
and/or real estate companies to
let them know when maintenance
becomes an issue. Until the market
rebounds, we must all strive to keep
5
these homes from spoiling our streets
and neighborhoods.
The impacted area from airport
noise seems to grow daily. We must
have the affected areas reviewed
immediately. The current contour map
used by the Port Authority is based on
1999 numbers. I, along with our other
representatives in local, county, state
and federal government, will continue
to push to address this important
issue.
On a lighter note, great news
arrived from the Cleveland
Metropolitan School District. Our
two vacant schools will re-open this
fall. Valley View Boys Leadership
Academy and Douglas MacArthur
Girls Leadership Academy will open
for grades pre-K to 2. It is certain that
facilities maintenance and vitality will
follow.
Streetscape and storefront
renovation continues along Lorain
Avenue. Terrace Construction is on
pace to complete Phase I on schedule.
We will soon begin to iron out the
details for Phase II, the beautification
aspect of the project. Work has
certainly slowed on the facelift for the
downtown district. Hopefully, within
the next few weeks, great strides will
be made toward completion.
From our ball diamonds to the
soccer field, block parties to the
Farmers Market, Asphalt Cinema
to the local shops, this is a great
community to live and raise a family.
Please enjoy the rest of the summer,
enjoy your neighbors, and enjoy our
great neighborhood!
All the best,
ane

After the removal of several layers
of wooden panels, cement plaster,
and a thick layer of tar, the limestone
restoration began. First, a water misting
system, developed by VIP to loosen
dirt and carbons without the use
of chemicals, was used to clean the
limestone.
Next, VIP patched countless holes
and cracks with Jahn Restoration
Mortar. After removing deteriorated
mortar in the joints, appropriate mortar
color for tuck pointing was selected
from samples applied to the building.
With nine storefronts under
construction, including Gino’s Shoe
Repair, Allied Tax Service, Dad’s Smoke
Shop, Common Grounds, The Coin
Shop, and Westpark Barbershop,
restoring the past and preserving the
future is very visible in Downtown
Kamm’s Corners.
The property owner, Kamcor Realty,
is renovating the building on Lorain
Avenue with the assistance of the City
of Cleveland Storefront Renovation
Program (SRP), locally administered by
KCDC. The SRP offers design assistance
and a 40% rebate (up to $25,000) for
comprehensive exterior renovations.
Also, each tenant will receive a 40%
rebate (up to $3,000) for new signage.
In addition, former councilman Michael
Dolan committed a $35,000 grant to this
extensive project.
A major part of the scope of work
for this project is the restoration of
the original limestone crests and
decorative architectural details of the
building. The project also includes the
replication of several large sections
of details that had
been removed from
the building.

Vince. “After restoring broken portions
of the original crests, a release agent

Once fully cured, the flexible
silicone molds were covered with
a polyurethane-based material that

Arclight Glassworks
Living a Dream
…by Marilyn Osborne
Do what you love and the money will follow. West Park
resident John Abbott is banking on the truth of that adage.
He recently started his own company, Arclight Glassworks,
with the encouragement of his wife, Kelly McNamara. She
works in the banking industry and supports her husband
in doing what he loves: creating original stained glass for
residential and commercial clientele.
In the mid-1980’s, John grew interested in stained glass
work while attending art classes. In 1996, he ran a studio
in Parma called Designer Glass. “Piloting them through that
period was a labor of love,” said John. “There wasn’t a lot
money in it, but I learned a lot about the glass business.”
Then, in 1998, one of the commercial vendors the
company did business with, Oldcastle Glass, had an opening
in the front office for an inside sales rep. This was a much
more lucrative opportunity, but sadly involved no art glass
whatsoever. “I promised myself I’d do it for five years, and
then strike out on my own,” he said. Meanwhile, he gained
more training working with other glass studios in his spare
time.
Sure enough, at the end of five years, on March 12,
2005, he resigned and started his own business: Arclight
Glassworks. He chose the name from the glowing, wire
portion of an incandescent lamp. “When you work with

glass, you are really working with light,” John explained.
“The light bulb also represents an idea. Thus the name:
Arclight Glassworks.”
John built a workshop in his basement, including a
couple of worktables and a bench equipped with a builtin light. He uses this bench to trace patterns onto the
stained glass pieces. Glass, lead, solder, and tools are
at hand because he does most of the work in this shop.
Pieces to be fired in a kiln are taken to one of two studios
he shares with other artists.
Since starting Arclight Glassworks, John has created
and installed decorative glass in a number of local homes
and businesses, including a stained glass bar front he’s
currently working on for the Cleveland Bistro restaurant
on West 117th Street. He also made a major repair to a
shattered antique piece the size of a door that belongs to
the owners of the Prosperity Social Club in Tremont. The

piece was over 100 years old. “Getting
glass to match inside an antique piece
is a challenge,” explained John. He
dug through drawers and drawers of
old glass to find a proper match. A
medallion had to be specially made
by a glass blower. John doesn’t blow
glass, but he knows someone who
does. (All the folks in the stained glass
business seem connected, as do local
artists in general.)
It was through such a connection
that John landed his current and
largest project to date: creating
stained glass art for the interior of P.J.
McIntyre’s, a new Irish restaurant and
pub opening in September at 17119
Lorain Avenue, the former West End
Appliance location.
Here’s how. John and his wife Kelly
love West Park. They have lived on West
116th, West 133rd, and now Warren
Road. All their houses have been “fixeruppers.” The man who redid their
wood floors, Everett Query, is also a
muralist and a friend of Tom Leneghan
and Patrick Campbell, partners in
P.J. McIntyre’s. Everett, impressed
with John’s work, introduced Tom
and Patrick to John. After learning
about the vision for P.J. McIntyre’s,
John drew up several designs for
the walls, booths, and entranceways
employing stained glass techniques
and embossing on clear glass.
“John took the project to heart and
designed fantastic original art. Some
of his pieces creatively tie in a Celtic
knot that is part of our logo,” said
Tom. “The fact that John is a local
gentleman, makes having him part of
this project even better.”
“I am thrilled to be part of this
endeavor,” said John.

Glassworks and the art of stained glass,

Diamonds are a
Girl’s Best Friend!
The GMI Panthers were crowned
Junior Division Champs of Four Corners
Baseball in the local fast-pitch girls
softball program, a surprise ending and
extraordinary feat considering the team
finished at the bottom of the division
last summer with a dismal record
of 2-14. In a complete turnaround,
the team ended this summer with a
stunning 15-1 record. Coach Gary
Mills attributes this big win to the hard
work and enthusiasm exhibited by
all the team members, including his
daughter, pitcher Brianna Mills, who
hit 5 home runs this summer — the
most home runs by a single player in
the division!
In a strategic move, Coach Mills
studied his team’s opponents to discover
their strengths and weaknesses. “I then
coached my girls accordingly,” said
Mills. That strategy obviously helped
the team rise to the top of the ranks.
The girls were out on the diamond
practicing twice a week. Those who
were less than enthusiastic dropped
out, making room for a few fresh faces
that were added to the team this year.
Nearly 95% of the girls are from West
Park. “One of the parents of a team
member also played Four Corners
here as a child,” said Mills, who also
sponsors the team. (GMI stands for

“A critical piece to the analysis
is input derived from residents
concerning the fate of the airport
and property,” said Airport Director
Ricky Smith. “It is critical that we

Two public workshops have

Asphalt Cinema
Fun for Five!
CLEVELAND
Have you enjoyed our series of free outdoor
family movies these past five summers? They’re
dubbed Asphalt Cinema because they are shown
in the municipal parking lot at West 168th Street
and Albers Avenue (near Lorain Avenue). In June,
Fairview Hospital sponsored Happy Feet. In July, The
Ohio Lottery sponsored Charlotte’s Web. In August,
KCDC sponsored Over the Hedge.
Hundreds of residents brought lawn chairs and
blankets and joined their neighbors under the stars.
Before the movie began at dusk, there was plenty of
fun with creative games and activities for children
at booths operated by Downtown Kamm’s Corners
merchants. Always popular is the bubble gum
blowing contest for people of all ages.
At Asphalt Cinema, fresh hot popcorn, sno-cones,
and cold beverages are available for purchase
along with glow necklaces, too. Before the movie
begins, kids stand in line for free fanciful balloon
creations.
Plan to join us next summer for Asphalt Cinema
on the third Fridays of June, July, and August!

The Kamm’s Corners Farmers
Market is held every Sunday from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October
and invites you to buy locally
grown fresh produce, bread, baked
goods, cheese and dairy products,
honey, herbs, and flowering plants!
The market also features weekly
health and wellness education,
live entertainment, and cooking
demonstrations from both local and
celebrity chefs.
In addition to mouth-watering
summer produce such as tomatoes,
sweet corn, and peaches, several
high profile restaurants gave chef
demonstrations recently. On August 5th
at 10:30 a.m., Dr. Stephen Flynn from
Fairview Hospital hosted a discussion
on the Mediterranean Diet with food
samples provided. On August 12th
visitors to the market learned how to
roast sweet corn on the grill and tried
an ear for $1. Proceeds went to support
The Cleveland Heroes Run. Chefs from
Johnny Mango were at the market on
August 19th featuring food from their
eclectic international menu.
On August 26th, barbecue aficionados
will appreciate Chuck Yarborough
of The Plain Dealer cooking Smoked
Texas Brisket, with our own Steve
Lorenz (KCDC Executive Director and
Certified Barbeque Judge) smoking
a Pork Shoulder. In September, look
for guest appearances by Pearl of the
Orient, Great Lakes Brewing Company,
Deborah Hanson featuring recipes
from Cleveland Cooks, and Stino da
Napoli.
The Kamm’s Corners Farmers
Market is also a family entertainment
destination! On August 5th, Michael
McDonald of the Easy Street Rounders
played Americana, lyrical, and folk rock
music. On August 12th, Jim Tigue, a
self-described guitarist, performer,

K&K Portage
Market Celebrates
35 Years Making
Customers Happy
Pre-wrapped meat sold at megachain supermarkets is often the
only choice in many communities.
Fortunately, West Park has an
alternative: K&K Portage Market in
the Warren Village Shopping Plaza at
3364-A Warren Road. With its 80 feet
of glass cases displaying a vast array
of steaks, chops, deli meats, fresh
seafood, and more, K&K harkens
back to the good old days.
Prompt and friendly service is
yours from behind the counter
as you indicate exactly what
you want and how much.
The name K&K is from Kolar and

Cleveland Heroes Run Set for
Sunday, September 23
Cleveland’s most scenic and challenging five-mile race
and two-mile fun run or walk will take place on Sunday,
September 23rd. The morning event honors the memory
of West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters who have
died in the line of duty and whose names are etched on
the memorial set in the Memorial Walkway along the west
side of Rocky River Drive.
The memorial is a granite and bronze sculpture
overlooking scenic Rocky River Reservation. Designed
by local artist and sculptor Paula Blackmon, it not only
represents the tremendous sacrifice made by these police
officers and firefighters, but also offers their families and the
community a gathering place to honor their memory.
The West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters Memorial
Fund was established in 2002, and was made possible
through a joint effort of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s
Association, Firefighters Local 93, and federal, state, and
local government along with citizen support.
The annual Cleveland Heroes Run, a 5-mile and 2-mile
community race, was created to raise funds not only to
make this tribute possible, but also to establish and fund
an annual scholarship for a family member of a West Park
police officer or firefighter whose name appears on the
memorial. Also, to show appreciation and support for the
West Park community, a scholarship is given each year to a
local school in the name of one of the fallen police officers
or firefighters.
To get involved in making this lasting tribute possible, join
the Heroes Run on September 23rd. There is also a kidsonly race, for children 7 and younger, that begins after the
5-mile race. Although registration is required for the kids
race, no entry fee applies. It’s an opportunity for everyone
to get involved in the event.
Entry Fees:
$16 Pre-registration by Tuesday, September 18th
$20 Late registration & race day registration
All entry fees are non-refundable
For those who embrace the competitive spirit, awards
will be presented at the end of the races to the top three
finishing male and female racers in a plethora of age groups
and categories.
Plus, those who pre-register before September 18th
will get a commemorative long-sleeved race t-shirt, postrace refreshments, and a goodie bag. For race registration
forms, visit their web site at www.clevelandheroesrun.com
or the KCDC web site at www.kammscorners.com. Race
forms are also available at many fine West Park business
establishments.

Congregation
Exploring
Wind Power as
Sustainable Energy
Alternative
In May 2003, the sisters at the
Congregation of St. Joseph installed a
132-foot wind energy-monitoring tower
on their grounds at 3430 Rocky River
Drive. The tower has been measuring
the wind force flowing across the
Rocky River valley, an area considered
by experts to be the most promising
for capturing a smooth, constant air
flow here.
Data from the study is now being
analyzed to determine if “clean, green”
wind power is feasible for that location,
and, if so, what kind of generator would
give the optimal results, including its
optimal height and its potential to
contribute energy to the congregation’s
electric usage.
Sister Mary Schrader spearheaded
the project and asked KCDC to help
gather “smart women and men who
have good hearts” to help move the
project forward. As a result, government
officials from the city and state, along
with experts in sustainable energy and
other interested parties met July 31st
to discuss the project and explore
funding resources for a wind turbine
if the project moves ahead.
Considering the high cost and
polluting effects of fossil fuels, the
congregation is continually investigating
the use of practical renewable energy
sources such as wind now and perhaps
solar power later. Currently, the sisters
own 11 cars fueled by compressed
natural gas, and by using public
transportation and carpooling, they
have reduced the number of gasolinepowered vehicles being used by
members of the congregation. They
are so dedicated to preserving the
environment that they use Green Clean,
a cleaning crew that uses only non-toxic
cleaners to clean their facilities.
The Congregation of St. Joseph is
living their promise “to take steps now
to strengthen, heal, and renew the face
of the earth.”

North Coast Health Ministry (NCHM) is a non-profit
organization with a singular purpose: to deliver health
care with compassion to the uninsured in our own
backyard. NCHM was founded in 1986 to champion the
needs of local residents who were increasingly overlooked
by the traditional health care system. Since then, NCHM
has consistently delivered healthcare and hope to the
uninsured.
For the many people who earn too much to qualify for
government support and have no affordable alternatives,
NCHM offers free healthcare and medical assistance.
Services are provided by paid staff and volunteers.
Their full time physician is Board Certified in Family
Medicine. In addition, North Coast Health Ministry has
established working relationships with hundreds of
doctors and medical professionals who accept referred
patients whenever further care or treatment is deemed
necessary.
Diagnostic testing and comprehensive medical
treatment are often available to their patients through
partnerships with Fairview, Lakewood, and St. John
West Shore Hospitals. Patients are also eligible to receive
discounts on prescription medication at three local
pharmacy chains and through pharmaceutical patient
assistance programs.
Care is available to individuals from birth to age 65 who
are uninsured, have limited income, and live in western
Cuyahoga and eastern Lorain counties. To determine if
you qualify for free healthcare, simply call NCHM at 216228-7878. You will receive an eligibility screening over
the phone. If you qualify, you will receive registration
forms in the mail followed by an appointment. North
Coast Health Ministry clinic hours are Monday - Friday,
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
For many people NCHM
is like a port in the storm…
“I had no where else
to turn… You’ve given
me a hand and some
hope… I don’t know what
I would do if they were
not here to take care of
my medical needs… I am
always treated well here,
the staff treats you like a
person… They give me
the best medical attention
I have ever had!”

Why is it important
to maintain regular
dental visits?
Have you seen your dentist lately? It may be one of the most important appointments you make!
Regular dental check-ups are essential to maintaining overall good health. Many diseases have signs that
appear in the mouth. Diabetes, nutritional and vitamin deficiencies, and hormonal irregularities are some
examples. In addition, by identifying precancerous changes in your mouth, we can help detect cancer at a
stage when it can be treated most successfully.
Regular dental visits can also help to detect periodontal disease (gum disease). You may be unaware
that you have gum disease because it does not always hurt. We always check the health of your gums to
ensure all is well.
Regular visits are also important to denture wearers to ensure a proper fit and if replacement or
realignment is necessary.
By visiting your dentist regularly, we can detect tooth decay early, which can save time, money and
your teeth.
And finally, even if you thoroughly brush and clean your teeth each day, your teeth need and deserve
a professional cleaning at the dental office. Professional cleaning helps remove stains and tartar from

Current owner Bob LaBuda, who grew up in West Park,

Fairview Hospital is Reverified as a
Level II Trauma Center
Fairview Hospital has been reverified as a Level II Trauma Center by the Committee
on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This achievement recognizes
Fairview Hospital’s dedication to providing the highest quality care for injured
patients.
As reverified by the Committee on Trauma, a Level II Trauma Center is able
to initiate definitive care for all injured patients. Key elements of a Level II
Trauma Center include 24 hour-immediate coverage by general surgeons with
specialized knowledge in the area of trauma management, as well as coverage by
the specialties of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency
medicine, radiology, and critical care.
“The ACS sets very high standards to meet in these areas, and our employees
and physicians are to be commended for the hard work and dedication that were
required for this most recent verification,” said Richard Treat, M.D., chairman of the
Department of Surgery and director of Trauma, Surgical, and Critical Care. “For our
community, it means that in the event a loved one is injured in an accident, they
will be cared for by a well organized team whose specialty is traumatic injury.”
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the Committee
on Trauma’s Verification/Consultation Program for Hospitals promotes the
development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital
resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address
the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the prehospital phase
through the rehabilitation process.
The Committee on Trauma’s verification program does not designate trauma
centers. Rather, the program provides a confirmation that a trauma center has
demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all
injured patients. The actual establishment and the designation of trauma centers
is the function of local, regional, or state health care systems agencies, such as the
local emergency medical services (EMS) authority.
There are four separate categories of verification (Level I, II, III and IV). Each category
has specific criteria that must be met by a facility seeking that level of verification. Each
hospital has an on-site review by a team of experienced trauma surgeons.

Approximately 1,500 motorcyclists

money for pediatric patients at Fairview
Hospital. The event was part of the 12th
annual Toy Run, which involves a 20mile ride from Elyria Harley-Davidson
to Fairview Hospital.
Organized by the Elyria Harley
Owners Group (H.O.G.), Elyria HarleyDavidson Sales Company, and Fairview
Hospital, the June 24th event raised
over $5,000 for the Pediatrics Unit at
Fairview Hospital. More than $34,000
and 10,000 toys have been collected in
the event’s history.

The Many Faces of
Fairview Hospital Are What Make Us
A 100 Top Hospital.
Recently, more than 2,800 hospitals nationwide were measured for clinical
outcomes, patient safety, operational efficiency, financial performance and
growth. And for the second consecutive year, Fairview Hospital has been
named a 100 Top Hospital by Solucient® — thanks to our employees,
medical staff, board members and volunteers.
We’re honored to achieve this status and believe it validates our mission
to be the best place to receive care, the best place to work and the best
place to practice medicine. We also thank our patients and families for
their confidence in choosing Fairview Hospital…where we’re always
Moving Life Ahead.
