A Message from Our President
A Message from Our President
My Fellow Fagowees,
For many of us the new year is a time for reflection. Since my birthday falls at the end of
the year this is especially true for me. Between
the time I write this and the time you read it I
will hit the big 5-0. For many of you that
makes me a youngster, but people tend to
make a big deal out of it so it makes me even
more introspective.
For me 2013 was a great year. Not only did I
become a real skier, I became president of a
great ski club. I have to admit it was a bit
scary at first and it turned out to be even more
work than I feared, but it’s one of the most
rewarding things I’ve ever done. I’m having
fun with it and plan to keep doing so for a
while if you’ll let me.
We all go through a lot of changes in our lives.
I know I have. Fagowees Ski Club will be 47
this year. The club has gone through many
changes in that time and will go through many more. We will always be a ski club first
but we will also have lots of other things going on year round.
In 2013 we stopped our printed newsletter. In 2014 I want to make sure we really increase
our online presence to make up for it. We will still have the newsletter but we will be
building a new website that will be more dynamic. We will be moving into the 21st century with online payments for dues, trips and other events. We will need to be more active
on social networks like FaceBook, Meetup and Twitter - or whatever the next big thing is.
We find new ways to attract and keep members. We have not had a publicity chair for a
year now and that is really hurting us. I would really like to find someone to fill that role
but if no one wants to do it on their by themselves I plan to form a committee and split the
work up like we are doing with the race committee. If anyone is willing to help with this,
or if you have ideas on what we should be doing, please let me know.
I’m looking forward to a happy, healthy, snowy new year for all of us.
Your Prez,
Bill
P.S. I gotta give a shout out to the big
guy in the red suit. He gave me my
wish and came through with some great
snow. We’ve had some really good
conditions this year and it looks like it
will continue through the season.
Thanks Santa!

Congratulations
to the
Fagowee of the
Month!
Our January 2014 Fagowee of the Month is a long time active member
our club. He is a respected and much teased person that is always fun to
be around.
of
He has served in many positions over the years on the Board, run numerous trips, always willing to help out if needed.
He currently stepped up to fill out a very important board position last
year because of a resignation. He also is serving on the CMSC Board
this year as well. Can’t hurt our cause there!!
He will help out anyone needing help skiing, and he does ski tuning
demos at meetings. Sure at some point people have seen a big cow skiing down the hill too.
Please stop and thank him for everything he has done for the Fagowee’s
over the years. A big congratulation goes out to our January 2014
Fagowee of the Month…

Letters to the Editor….
Dear fellow Fagowees,
As you know, each month the Happening staff is inundated with mail commenting on the many activities of our club. In many cases the readers have questions that, in the past, have been answered directly
thru “off-line” methods. However, some of the questions are of general interest and can be answered in a
more public forum. Here is a sampling of this month’s correspondence:
Dear Happening,
I are a racer. Last year I bumped my noggin on a tree limb while soaring over a cliff.
As I prepare for this year’s season, I can’t remember the finer points of racing. Could you
please refresh my memory and give me some tips? Hurry your answer, Sochi is just 50 days
away.
L.V.
Dear L.V.,
The Race committee (AKA “The Gang of Three”) has reviewed your question and
come up with a list of the most important things for a racer to know. These pointers have
been culled from their extensive experience and wishful technique. Here they are:
1. Always start at the top of the hill and ski down.
2. Ski fast and try not to fall. It can affect your time.
3. If you are not screaming in terror all the way down, you’re not trying hard enough.
4. If you ski sober, it’s time to reevaluate your racing style.
5. Your wardrobe is more important than your equipment.
Dear Happening,
I just signed up for my first bus trip as a Fagowee. What can I expect? How should I
dress? What is the proper etiquette?
Desperate to Avoid a Social Blunder
Dear “Desperate to Avoid a Social Blunder”,
The first thing you need to know is that the bus is divided into the front and the back.
Think of the front as civilization and the back as a small third-world country with more
booze then morals. In the front of the bus you will find the genteel, well-mannered, and ever
-so-proper members of the club. They will also have the coffee and the donuts. In the back
of the bus you will find the “others”. We try not to say too much about the back of the bus
(you can never tell when someone from Homeland Security will find this publication), but
suffice to say they have the boom-box and speakers (the volume is set high to drown out any
low-flying jet aircraft), the coolers and the alcoholic beverages, and a code of conduct that
borders on outright mischievous!
7
(Letters continued…)
In the morning, you should dress for a day on the slopes. Layering is very important.
Also wear clean underwear in case your skiing style results in a trip to the local medical center. Please be advised that while under garments from Victoria’s Secret are always appropriate, many of our male members have complained about a lack of selection in their sizes.
In the evening, the front of the bus will always dress for dinner. Think Downton Abbey. Gentlemen can never go wrong with white tie although some of our more frivolous and
playful members have been known to wear black tie or even a dinner jacket! Ladies, please
don’t forget your elbow length white gloves with your gown. Last year one of the ladies
wore gloves with plastic instead of the traditional seed pearl buttons. The embarrassment
that ensued resulted in her having to join another club this year. Remember, the serving staff
will be circulating with drinks and hors d’oeuvres and it is important to set a good example.
In the back of the bus, things are a little different. Indeed, we are happy if they remain
dressed in any fashion. Please be aware that the rumors of a hot tub and a tattoo parlor in the
back are not true. However, children and small animals are expressly prohibited from entering the back of the bus.
Hope this helps.
And, one last letter,
On a more personal level, to the person who wrote in about the ménage-a-trois. We
are not quite sure whether your question centers upon the flexibility of the human body, or
whether this is a simple question about what is allowed or prohibited by local and natural
law. We have referred your question to a young lady in the club who has the most experience with this type of encounter. She told us that she will contact you personally to discuss
your dilemma, and she is sure that she and her twin sister can resolve your concern with a
little private coaching.
That’s all for this month, Keep those cards and letters
coming!

What Could Bring 39 Fagowees and Friends
Together?
A Christmas Story, The Musical
Yes, there were really 39 theater goers at the Near West Theater’s presentation of A Christmas
Story, The Musical. Somehow, a script that included a family, a few friends, a nasty neighbor
dog, a teacher, policeman and the staff of a Chinese restaurant turned into a cast of 65 energized actors and a great orchestra that was hidden in the rafters. The show was full of spirit
and enthusiasm and was enjoyed by all of us. Prior to the theater almost all of us joined at Bar
Cento for a dinner and a few spirits of the adult type. Pizzas were great and other items were
reported to be excellent. The Vegan menu seemed to be non-existent after checking, but Frank
and Karen made do with a liquid meal instead. The weather put us in the mood and the performance sealed the deal. An après theater drink at Johnny Mangos closed the evening and all
went home with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads.

FAGOWEES stands for Fun and Games on Week Ends Especially Skiing, and is pronounced Fuh-Gow-eez. Your part of a 21 and over club
that does a lot! Together we organize events and trips throughout the
year. As a matter of fact one of the main purposes of our club is to Promote organized ski trips, social functions and other group activities
on a non-profit basis, consistent with the desires of the active membership. It’s all about YOU….
Do you have an idea for a social function or some fun group activities?
Let your Seasonal Social know about it. Contact Your Summer Social
all events May through October & Winter Social for all events November through April
Let’s Get Started Now!!!
First of all DON’T WAIT. You got a good idea for a Fun time contact your appropriate Seasonal Social
Chairman. DO IT NOW planning ahead is very important to ensure a successful event. For some of the bigger $$$ Out West or International trips you need to plan ahead A YEAR OR MORE. Most trips you will
need at least 3 to 4 MONTHS lead time to ensure the process runs smoothly as possible. 1st Our Trustees
Must Approve You as a trip leader. 2nd the Board Must Approve Your Trip before it can be announced. Finally your trip will need to be advertised & sold. DON’T WORRY you’re not alone. Your Social Chairman
will make sure you understand the entire process from start to finish.
We have a very diverse group, everyone knows of a cool place to go, maybe there is a fun activity you have
done in the past, share it with the rest of us, that’s why we’re here lets have some fun.
IT ALL Starts With YOU. Just a brief description of your idea
