Let me be the first to welcome you to the 2011-2012 Lions year. Our new
international President Wing-Kun Tam‟s theme this year is Lions Believe.
“Believe that one person can make a difference. Believe that the entire
world can be changed when we come together as Lions. Believe that
changing a life–or the world–starts with each one of us”. I think we need to
remember this as we live our motto „WE SERVE‟. Our goals this year
besides having great fundraisers should be to do a couple more service
projects. As the year goes I challenge our club to do at least 2 new service
projects that help the community or another organization.
I would like to start the year thanking all of those who came out and helped
at another successful Grafton Lions Chicken Roast. It was a sellout, selling
1,600 chickens this year. Nice job Lion Bob Lauer and your committee of
experienced helpers. I would also like to thank Lion Dan Delorit and his
committee for holding down the Grafton Lions Concession stand at
Centennial Park. Outside of a few rainouts it‟s off to a good start. We just
need the weather to get a little warmer so the ball players drink more beer.
My final thanks go out to Lion Dave Mauer, the Grafton Lions Park shelter
is looking really good. You and your Lion helpers have done a fantastic job
and we are almost there.
Mark your calendars for a few important dates coming up. July 19th is the
appreciation dinner for the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department. We need to
have a good showing of Lions at this event. We need to remember what
they sacrifice for this community every time they go out on a call. They
leave their families at all times of the day knowing they take a chance they
may not come home. Starting Thursday July 14th and going for seven
consecutive Thursdays until August 25th the Lions sell popcorn, beer, soda
and water at the GALA in the Park Concert Series. Lion Bob is always
looking for a few Lions to come out and help. August 15th is the Grafton
Lions Fundraiser Golf Outing. Bring your four-some out. They can be
good golfers or bad golfers and don‟t need to be Lions, they just need to
come out and be ready for a great day of golfing. Thanks to Lion Dale and
Terry for organizing this event.

I Raised My Hand
I raised my hand when someone at the table asked, “Does anyone want to be Secretary of the
Grafton Lions?” Ron Yokes, who was also sitting at the table, leaped to his feet, jumped across
the table and gave me a huge bear hug. That got me to worrying what I had volunteered for. I felt
better when I heard Barry Boline, who was seated at the adjoining table, say “It’s not that
difficult.” That happened almost a year ago. I have been attending the Ron Yokes Secretarial
Training Course ever since – which has helped immensely. I am not sure what is in store during
my year as Secretary. But I am up for the challenge.
This past year only 35% of the members of the Grafton Lions regularly attended meetings. The
club’s monthly newsletter, Lions’ Gazette, plays an extremely important role in communicating
with all the membership. I expect that this year’s board will be making changes to the newsletter
to improve communication with members. In addition, I am looking for ideas from the members
on how to make the newsletter more beneficial to all members whether they attend meetings or
not. Please send me your suggestions. (262-377-9325 or [email protected]
Just days into my reign as publisher of the newsletter, I have come up with two changes that you
should know about:
I have an expectation that the chairs of all the committees that are active during the
current month will provide me with an update for the newsletter. In addition, chairs of
committees should have an expectation that I will send them reminder(s) for the article.
The deadline for the newsletter will change somewhat. Newsletters will still be
distributed by either email or USPS on the Saturday before the first Tuesday of the
month. The deadline for articles for the newsletter will remain the preceding Friday.
However, I would like the articles by noon on Friday. (Ron’s deadline was “early
evening.”) I need a little more time to put the newsletter together, at least initially.
I have one additional request. Would each of you raise your hand, and reach out to shake Ron
Yokes’ hand the next time you see him? He has put in a lot of work and time as secretary. Thank
him for his five years of dedication to the office of Secretary of the Grafton Lions.
If you want, you can jump across the table and give him a hug. As Barry Boline said, “It’s not
that difficult.”

Summer Meetings
As you know there are no regular membership meetings in July and August. We do have two special
meetings that you should put on your calendar.
Summer Spouses Picnic
The annual Summer Spouses Picnic is held to honor all spouses as well as members of the Grafton Lions
this past year. It is also a time to look forward to the new Lions year coming up.
This year’s picnic will be held on Tuesday August 16, 2011. Cocktails will be served from 5:30-6:45, and
the Picnic Meal will be served from 6:45-7:15.
All Lions are asked to please bring door prizes to the picnic.
Dan Wrolstad
Spouses Picnic Chair
Fireman’s Picnic
It is that time of the year again to show our appreciation for the work and dedication of the Grafton
Volunteer Firefighters and Rescue Squad. The Grafton Lions Club will host the annual Firefighter and
Rescue Squad Appreciation Picnic at Veterans’ Park on Tuesday July 19th.
The Social hour begins at 5:30 and the dinner will be served at 6:30. Lions are asked to please bring an
item to raffle. Reservations are not needed.
Al Richards
Fireman’s Picnic Chair
The Prez Sez (continued from page 1)
August 16th is the Spouses appreciation dinner at Veterans Memorial Park. Lets come out and thank our
spouses for all they help us with during the year. September 6th is the first official meeting of the year. I
hope to see lots of fellow Lions at these upcoming events.
My final thoughts for this month are that I would like to thank Lion Dan Montaine and his board for a
great Lions year that just finished. He had a good deal of issues to deal with and he handled them with
ease and kept our club as the greatest in the district. Thank you Lion Dan. Also lets please keep Lion Joe
Salamone in our thoughts and prayers as he heals at home this summer.
I wish you all a great and healthy summer,
Lion David Liss

GRAFTON LIONS PARK UPDATE
The month of June cooperated, weather wise, as we continue to make progress on the Shelter.
We had Lions at the site, all four Saturday mornings, putting up trusses, installing hurricane
brackets to the trusses, taking measurements and doing all the prep work needed for the 3/4 inch
plywood sheeting for the roof. We had a total of 32 Lions working on this project during the
month of June. Some were there every Saturday and others were able to make it once or twice
during the month. The help was appreciated. We averaged approximately 5 hours per Lion
worker each Saturday. Doing the math, we put in 160 hours on the trusses during this month. If
you take an average hourly contractor charge of $50.00, which includes all costs, our inkind
service to the Village in putting up the trusses amounted to $8000.00. Not bad for a bunch of
Lion volunteers.
This coming Tuesday, July 5th, five of us will work from 5pm to 8pm. We will be shimming
some of the trusses that are a little out of line and setting a very straight fascia board around the
ends of the trusses. We will not need any additional help. After this is completed, we will be able
to start installing the roof plywood sheeting. As you know, we need good weather to work. As
we get closer to each Saturday during July, we will be able to determine if we have a go for a
Saturday morning. I will keep you posted.
We have a very dedicated lead team consisting of Addy Silverthorn, Tom Bartlein, Marko
Musich, and Frank Lorbecki. Without these guys, we could not have taken on such an involved
project. There is also a second layer of Lion volunteers that are there almost every weekend.
These Lions also provide much needed support in the building process.
While the construction of the shelter is taking longer than we thought, we will get there. This
project has brought together a bunch of lions that get a lot of satisfaction from doing something
special for the families and children that will be using the park, playground equipment and the
shelter for decades.

Wisconsin Lions Red Cross Blood Challenge
The Wisconsin Lions, in partnership with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring the First
Annual Wisconsin Lions Red Cross Blood Challenge. Wisconsin Lions members along with
their family and friends are encouraged to donate blood at blood drives or donations centers.
There is a contest, with prizes to the local Lions club and district with the most donors. When
you donate blood, please contact Bob Hoffman so he can record the donation.
Lions Chicken Roast
To Grafton Lions and spouses:
Thank you for making the 2011 chicken roast one of the most fun and successful. Your help
made this possible.
Thanks to all of you who made those wonderful desserts. During the day I heard many comments
about not only how good the chicken tasted, but how much fun we seem to be having doing our
respective tasks.
This why I am proud to say: "I'm not only a Lion, but a Grafton Lion."
Thanks again to all,
Lion Bob Lauer
Bob also provide the following “numbers.”
1,600 chicken dinners were sold, as well as 85 kids meals. Snow cones were new this year, and
despite the cool weather, 85 snow cones were sold. Of the 100 members of the Grafton Lions
Club, 77 members helped with the Chicken Roast along with 17 wives and friends. The net profit
is $7500. The great participation made his one of our best fund raisers.
Dan Montaine also passed on the following “thank you”
My fellow Lions;
Thank you everyone for working the Chicken Roast Sunday. I really appreciate all your help and
a special thanks to Lion Bob Lauer for heading it up and making it a success. I also thank Lions
Dave Antoine for putting on a great raffle, Tom Miller for the great beer and Jack Chenery for
chicken dinner deliveries. Because of your efforts we can give and do more in this community.
Thank you all again,
Lion President
Daniel Montaine
