NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2013
FROM THE PRESIDENTS
Hopefully everyone spent a wonderful time with friends and family this
Thanksgiving. We wish each of you the very best for the upcoming holidays
and the new year.
Jim and Sharon are back in full swing. He seems to be doing well and is back
to his old self. Its great having them back providing some lively dance music.
Our Wild West dance on November 17th was a great success thanks to Ora,
Lucy and Julie. Special thanks to them and their husbands for a lot of work.
Everyone chipped in and things went well. About ninety people attended the
dance and many went home with a turkey under their arm. It was a lot of fun.
OFFICERS
Club elections are just around the corner so this will be our last newsletter

wishes to next year's board.

Getting to Know
Ed & Bev deVries
Beverly, who considers herself a Californian, was born in Louisiana during the war, but was brought up
in the Sacramento area. She and her family moved to Amador County in the late 50’s. Ed was born in
the Netherlands during the war and he and his family immigrated to the United States when he was 14.
He and his family spent his 14th Christmas on the ship outside of New York, setting foot on land on the
26th of December. He and his family eventually arrived in the Sacramento area where he polished his
English and finished his education, joined the Navy and went to the Artic and Ant-Artic on an icebreaker. He left the Navy after two trips to Viet Nam.
Beverly taught, married her husband of 27 years and raised their 3 children here in Amador County. Ed
married, had 3 children and lived in several places in California. When he and Barbee were married, he
was the International Project Manager for a large automatic transfer switch and emergency power
systems company. His work took him to many exotic places.
Ed began square dancing in 1976. His involvement includes various club offices, Association President
several times, Association Insurance Director for 18 years, State Council Northern Area V-P, and recently
completed a two year stretch as president of the Jackson Claim Jumpers. He also enjoys round dancing.
Beverly’s husband died in February of 1999 and Ed’s wife died in February of 2012, both from cancer
related issues. Beverly and Ed and Barbee met and became friends through square dancing in 2009.
Several months after Barbee’s death, Beverly and Ed started dating, which ultimately led to their
marriage in June of 2013. They now live in the Wallace area of Calaveras County.
Excellent Information
…..not only for New Dancers but for Club Members who need invigorated:
When a new dancer graduates and is welcomed into the club, they have mastered the necessary
figures to dance the mainstream program. However in many instances they are not aware of the
background or history of the club they are joining or other information that would be a great help to
them.
It is suggested that, during the second half of their dance lessons, time should be allotted for the
information provided in this trifold. Other club information could be given also to the dancer during
these breaks in their class. This way by the end of their instructions they will not only be well versed
in the basics of dancing and will have some of the information they need to enter the “Wonderful
World of Square & Round Dancing”.
This trifold will be in the question and answer format. Some answers will be provided by the club
while others will be generic in nature.
Q. What is the history of the club?
Q. What is expected of us as club members?
Q. Are there other clubs with new dancers? Will we be able to dance with them?
Q. What is a “Mother Club or Home Club”?
A. Explain that your club brought the new dancers into the wonderful world of square
dancing. They should go to dance at as many other clubs and square dance events as
they like and as often as they are able. They should always remember however to come
home and support their “Mother Club or Home Club” and dance there regularly.
Q. What is a Square dance weekend?
Q. What is Banner Stealing or Banner Raid And Banner retrieval?
Explain how your club goes on a raid or banner stealing and what you do. Let them know this is a
friendly way for clubs to visit one another. Also let them know that this is sometimes done
differently in other areas.
Q. How should we dress for the club and Dances. How should we dress on weekends, State or
National Square Dance events?
Dress Code is flexible and depends on the event being sponsored. The sponsors set the Dress
Code for their individual functions and monitor and enforce the code as they may desire. For
additional information Also see Booklet B074 “A Club Guide to Successful Lessons”.
Q. What other dance programs are available to me?
A. Plus, Advanced, and Challenge.
Q. How long should we dance at the mainstream program? At least one year or until you are
comfortable with that program.
Q. What is Round Dancing?
A. Round dancing is choreographed ballroom dancing.
Q. Are there various programs in Round Dancing
A. 1. Yes, the programs are broken Down into Phase 2 through 6.
2. There are various rhythms:Two Step, Waltz, Rumba, and Fox Trot to name a few.
3. Lessons are required to learn the steps.
This will be a good dance for September 2013 New Dancers, and is
always well attended.
Three Claim Jumper couples (John & Trish Hershey, Ed & Beverly Ed DeVries, Smokey & Barbara Bennett)
ventured to the RIVCO Festival in Indio, CA November 7-10. All of the couples brought their RV or trailer.
The festival began with the Trail End Dance on Thursday evening, and there were dance activities all day
for Friday through noon on Sunday. This is a caller run festival for Plus and Advance level square dancers
and it is really big. To give you an idea of how big, they estimated that they had about 135 squares! The
callers were excellent (Ken Bowers, Wade Drive, Marshall Flippo, Tony Oxendine, Johnny Preston, Gary
Shoemake, and Mike Sikorsky). The weather was very nice and we all had a lot of fun! Hope to see more
of our local dancer at this festival next year.
