Stony Brook 2013 UMBC/Stony Brook UMBC 2014Hartford UNH 1 2004 CHAMPIONSHIP Picked to finish eighth by opposing coaches in the America East Preseason Poll, the 2004 Bearcats stunned the league by capturing both the regular season and tournament championships and advancing to the NCAA tournament in just the program’s fourth year of Division I membership. America East Coach of the Year Jeff Leightman led his squad to a 14-6-1 record, including a 6-3 mark against conference foes. The Bearcats secured the regular season title and home field for the tournament with a pair of wins to end the regular season. Binghamton rallied past conference power Boston University 2-1 in overtime and then knocked off then-league leading Northeastern 2-0 in the regular-season finale to grab the program’s first Division I regular season title and subsequent America East tournament berth. The two-day, four-team tournament was played amid frigid temperatures on BU’s practice field after the game field had incurred too much damage in the rain-soaked prior week. In the semifinals on November 5, BU controlled play from start to finish in eliminating fifth-seeded Northeastern, 3-0. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Burnham ripped a 16-yard shot through a maze of players into the far corner to open the scoring just 5:30 into the contest. The Bearcats took the 1-0 margin into halftime and extended it just 3:26 into the second half when senior forward Tatiana Mathelier netted her team-high eighth goal of the season. Sophomore forward Danielle White completed the scoring with 2:32 left and sophomore keeper Kristie Bowers made five saves to post her sixth shutout of the season. Two days later, BU notched a 2-0 win over No. 2 Maine to capture the historic crown. After the Black Bears had the better of play for most of the first half, BU seized the lead with 9:30 remaining in the period. Off a corner kick, freshman forward Tricia Reed outleaped the Maine keeper and sent a header toward the unoccupied net, where a Black Bears defender reached out and stopped the shot with her hand, prompting a penalty kick call. Junior defender Meghan Taylor, the tournament MVP, slotted the ensuing 12-yard kick into the top left corner for a 1-0 margin. In the second half, Burnham scored an insurance goal in the 78th minute on a close-range header. Bowers made six saves for her third straight shutout and seventh of the season. A crowd of more than 400 boisterous fans erupted at the final whistle, joining the team in celebration. Taylor (MVP), freshman defender Katie Kerrigan, Burnham and Mathelier were selected to the all-tournament team. Binghamton’s reward for winning its first conference crown since 1996 was a trip to State College and a first-round NCAA matchup with the nation’s No. 2 team, Penn State. The Nittany Lions were aided by two ‘own goals’ and added a penalty kick en route to a 6-1 win, ending BU’s storybook season. Mathelier briefly evened the score a 1-1 in the ninth minute, taking down a pass off the head of freshman linemate Kim Povill and beating the Penn State keeper from 12 outs out. It was Mathelier’s ninth goal of the season. Penn State tacked on two more first-half goals and two more in a 6:15 span early in the second half to pull away. Bowers was tested all night along and made 10 saves. “It was a special year,” Leightman said. I’m really proud of this2team. We took a huge step forward in success.” BU IN THE AMERICA EAST TOURNAMENT BU IN AMERICA EAST TOURNAMENT 2004 (NO. 1 SEED) Nov. 5 • Semifinals @ Binghamton Binghamton 3, Northeastern 0 Nov. 7 • Finals @ Binghamton Binghamton 2, Maine 0 2005 (NO. 3 SEED) Oct. 28 • Quarterfinals @ Binghamton Binghamton 2, UMBC 1 (OT) OCt. 30 • Semifinals @ Maine Binghamton 0, Maine 0 (2OT) Maine advances in PKs 3-1 2006 (NO. 2 SEED) Oct. 27 • Quarterfinals @ Binghamton Binghamton 0, New Hampshire 0 (2OT) New Hampshire advances in PKs 6-5 2007 (NO. 6 SEED) Nov. 1 • Quarterfinals @ Hartford Binghamton 1, Hartford 1 (OwT) Binghamton advances in PKs 6-5 Nov. 9 • Semifinals @ Boston Binghamton 0, Boston 2 Senior defender Nicole Montoya celebrates her game-winning shootout goal against Maine in the 2009 America East semifinals at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
