May 2015
Hartford Public Schools will provide a quality education
in a caring and safe environment for all students
Chavez Society Award
Maria Hurtado, Hartford High School senior and daughter of
Pastor and Leonila Hurtado of Hartford, was recently named
one of the area recipients of the prestigious Cesar E. Chavez
Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Maria and five other
recipients, out of hundreds of applicants, were honored at a
banquet held at the Fetzer Center on the campus of Western
Michigan University. The Chavez Foundation annually honors
outstanding Hispanic high school students across the nation
for academic and civic accomplishments. The scholarship is
offered by a program honoring the legacy of MexicanAmerican civil rights leader, the late Cesar Chavez.
Maria is a two-year member of the National Honor Society
and has represented Hartford High School at the AIMS-B Agricultural Conference at Michigan State University and the
National Hispanic Youth Leadership Summit in Chicago. A
talented artist, her work was featured on display at this year’s
Krasl Art Center High School Art Show.
The award represents the second time in as many years that
a Hartford senior has received a Chavez scholarship.

Public Schools and her mother Leonila.
Bond Construction to Begin in June
The Phase 1 School Bond bid for roof replacement at the high school /middle school has
been awarded to McDonald Roofing of Jackson, Michigan. Matt Overly of construction
manager Miller-Davis presented the school board the bid of $886,000, coming in at roughly
half of expectations, saving the District in excess of $800,000! Original estimates in the
$1.9 million range predicted a complete tear-off and replacement down to the bare metal.
Custodians have literally been chasing chronic leaks with plastic buckets for the last few
years as the 20 year old roof had exceeded it warranty period. Closer inspection via core
samples indicated that insulation layers were in fact dry and would not require replacement, resulting in huge cost savings to the district. Work is expected to begin as soon as school releases students for summer vacation.
Also in mid-June, the City of Hartford will begin the North Center Street Project, widening, paving and replacing waterlines/ utility poles, on Center from the stoplight, north to the city limits. Daily lane closures can be expected affecting those living along North Center, including access to Paras Hill, McDowell Apartments and
Hartford Schools Central Office. It is recommended that those needing to access the high school use Edwin
Street to avoid delays during the construction. All work is to be completed before students return in the fall.

All Around the District
Hartford High School was recently ranked #
49 among 630 Michigan Schools as reported
by Bridge Magazine and its parent organization, the
nonprofit Center for Michigan, when it published its
Michigan Schools Annual Academic Rankings. The
study which factors socioeconomics and other
weighted demographics rates Hartford with superior
ranking to the likes of nearby St. Joseph, Gull Lake,
Watervliet, Schoolcraft, Decatur, Gobles, Portage
Central, Vicksburg and Bridgman, to name just a
few. The entire chart of local ranking can be found
on the District website www.hpsmi.com or at
www.bridgemi.com.
High School Principal Dave Janicki credits his staff
with performing an excellent job of transforming
students into “learners” on a daily basis.
8 veteran staffers retired this
school year. The group totals
well over 200 years of combined service to the district.
The list includes Middle
School
special
education
teacher Linda Tyler, 23 years;
Judy
Janssen,
computer
teacher, 30 years; Gail Getman, counselor,
33 years, Donna Johnson, a former
Woodside principal serves now as the reading interventionist teacher at Red Arrow , 30 years; Sue
Gordon, Middle School social studies teacher, 15
years; Janie Rodriguez, Woodside migrant/bilingual
teacher, 19 years, Kris Sorensen, Woodside teacher, 23 years, and last but certainly not least, Rick
Ward, secondary English and Spanish teacher, an
amazing 44 years! You all will be missed.
Remembering Roger...
Teacher, coach, and principal at Hartford from
1952 through 1986. Some staffers simply do their
job and pass on through, while others resonate for
decades. During his career at Hartford, Roger
Hallgren coached track, football, baseball, boys’
basketball, and girls’ basketball. He personally rebuilt the track program in 1960. His girl’s basketball
team won 102 games, 3 conference championships, and 2 district titles, earning Roger honors in
the Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986.
A graduate of Northern Michigan University, Roger
grew up in the small town of Norway in Michigan’s
Upper Peninsula, just a stone’s throw from the Iron
Mountain stomping grounds of notable coaches
Steve Mariucci and Tom Izzo. Roger played on the
football, basketball and track teams at Northern
where Izzo first served as a college assistant
coach. ‘ Must be something in that UP water!
Victim of a long battle with cancer, Roger Hallgren
left us on June 1, 2014. Through memorial fund
donations, a large track and field record board was
donated by the Hallgren family, now permanently
on display in the high school gym where Roger held
court all those years.
Son Steve Hallgren, son-in-law
Vere Shindeldecker and grandson Scott Shindeldecker all hold
records on the memorial track
record board which was dedicated during the 2015 Coaches vs.
Cancer basketball game.
A Sure Sign of Spring…
is the annual Student Art Show as both Middle
School and High School students displayed their
work with the addition this year of 3rd grade artists
before an appreciative audience during the two-day
show.

and bold colors as seen in these photos.
Keep an eye on the school calendar to see when
art students will display their works again next year.
Plan time to attend the event in spring of 2016.
Some ambitious staffers at Red Arrow Elementary
created this clever Hollywood Square game to prank
the School Board and Administrators celebrating
Board Recognition Month. The game revealed the
deepest darkest secrets of the squares such as
which one had a pet kitty or which male member
played one of Henry the VIII’s wives in a high school
play? See how many of these young and innocent
faces you can identify. ( See answers on page 7)
It’s All Quite Elementary
Oz Visits Wooside: Members of the High School
cast of the Wizard of Oz visited with Woodside
students in conjunction with National Reading
Month. The cast members read to students, acted
out segments of the play and even took a little time
out to enjoy recess with the kids.
Family Science Night
Trip to Tigertown: Woodside students and their
parents enjoyed a special treat thanks to the PTO
and Mr. Gil Guzman who arranged a day trip to
Comerica Park to watch a Detroit Tigers baseball
game.
The giant bubble generator was just one of many
fascinating exhibits designed to amaze , amuse and
most importantly stimulate interest and a love of
learning about Science. Parents and siblings were
encouraged to join the fun in a very “hands-on” interactive environment. The event was partially underwritten by the Hartford Foundation. Many of the exhibits are part of a traveling educational outreach
program of the Curious Kids Museum.
Looking Like the Crooked O’l Man…
Fort Vagts
It’s always safe and warm around the campfire inside
the compound of “Fort Travis Vagts.” This specially
constructed fort not only protects from bandits & outlaws, but also provides a very special reading corner.
Red Arrow Principal “Mr. D” Ed Dickenson is all
dressed-up in celebration of the 100th day of
school. Elementary Students and Staff alike portrayed their version of what they would look like
if they were 100 years old.

The Hartford Public Schools Foundation for Quality Education
was created as the vision of former School Board President Jerry Lutz to enhance the education opportunities
of students attending Hartford Public Schools. By attracting private donations, the Foundation provides support for the development of enrichment programs and services not normally budgeted by the ever-shrinking
school funding from traditional governmental sources.
These "educational extras" in the form of annual Scholarships & Grants to Teachers and Students alike,
make the critical difference between just a good school system and an excellent one!
Incorporated in 1998 as a 501(c)-3 nonprofit, autonomous, tax-exempt organization,
the Foundation is directed by a Board of Directors; private citizens who serve without compensation.
The trustees are committed to generating and distributing financial and other resources to the school district in
an equitable manner. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $175,000 within the Hartford Public Schools!
(Donations to the Foundation are tax-deductible.)

Notes:
The end of the school year is a
great time to be a superintendent. This is the time of year,
when we are invited to events
throughout the District to visit
with students, staff, and parents.
Congratulating and thanking
them for all the hard work that
Superintendent
they have done in the past nine

months. Each year we strive to
(269)
621-7001
help our students finish the
school year and move on successfully to the next grade, the work force, or college. It is
our mission to educate and empower each student to be
successful in life.
One particular celebration stands out each year. On
June 5th we will acknowledge and honor the Class of 2015
at our 132nd Graduation Ceremony. This celebration is
the culmination of 13 years of hard work and dedication.
It represents a new beginning for all of our graduates.
This has been another successful school year thanks to
the hard work and efforts of many people. I believe each
child’s education is not constructed by a single person,
but rather by a community of people. Here in Hartford, we
are fortunate to have such committed staffs who work
tirelessly for the betterment of our students. In addition,
we are fortunate to have such a supportive community
who aids in educating our young people. Together, we
are helping to prepare our students for college, the world
of work, and service. For all of you, I say thank you!
Have a great summer!
