HAWAII ISLAND
SERVING THE ENTIRE BIG ISLAND
First Quarter 2011
President’s Letter
It’s a New Year and I am looking forward to new possibilities in 2011. Being the optimistic sort of person that I am,
I look back on the incredible achievements made by Hawaii Island Humane Society the past few years and I
become really excited about the positive direction this organization is headed.
Under Donna Whitaker’s leadership as executive director, tedious things like financial audits have at long last been
brought up to date so that she can focus on grants, staff development, community relationships, fundraising and
the like. There is an amazing staff in place at each of the three shelters caring for animals 24/7 and they obviously
love what they do.
We are still talking about the success of Pet Walk and how much fun it was to see so many friends and their pets
walking along Alii Drive in Kailua Village and even in the ubiquitous Hilo rain during the East Hawaii walk. You can
be sure we will make the 2011 Pet Walks even more fun for participants – both the two-legged and four-legged ones.
In the meantime, I’m already anticipating this year’s Tropical Paws which has just been scheduled for Friday, May 6.
And hopefully many of you were thinking “Pet Calendar” over the holidays and you snapped a photo of your kitty
curled up under your holiday tree or your dog chewing on Christmas packages. Entry forms for our annual Pets in
Paradise calendar will be available online soon for photo entries for the 2012 edition (yikes — who can think about
2012 already??).
But what I really want to share with you after all is said and done is that I am so fortunate to be rewarded every
time I happen to run in to a smiling owner of an adopted dog or cat. I’m constantly reminded by these people how
much they love their animals and how much their pets have changed their lives. They thank ME but the thanks
belong to the animals themselves. The lesson here is that somewhere, right now, in one of our shelters, there is an
animal waiting for you that will change your life for the better.
Although I’m certainly not one to recommend a New Year’s resolution, perhaps we
could help one another resolve to think more often about those who have no voice
of their own. Adopt our next pet, donate more of our time, money, goods and
services to Hawaii Island Humane Society in 2011. Then it really would be a year
filled with possibilities…and untold rewards.
Aloha, Mahalo, and Hauoli Makahiki Hou!

MAHALO LIST BEGINS OUR NEW YEAR ON POSITIVE NOTE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MAHALO
I’d like to begin this New Year with a message of gratitude to
the dedicated group of professionals that serve on Hawaii
Island Humane Society’s Board of Directors. These individuals
bring their varied experiences and expertise to every board
meeting and through their tenacity and willingness to work
through issues HIHS has become a better organization.

SANTA PAWS MAHALO
Mahalo to everyone who participated
in our Santa Paws event at the Kona
Bark Park. Several individuals took
advantage of the opportunity to create
fun holiday greeting cards from the
professional photo taken by Liz Kover with Santa. Pictured here is HIHS
Executive Director Donna Whitaker, Peanut, Badger and of
course…Santa (a.k.a. Joshua Hubbs).
Many thanks to the
Volunteers and
Participants in this
year’s annual

in Hilo and Kona.
Mahalo is also extended to the following companies for their support:
Huggo’s • Alii Veterinary
Pet Hospital • Keauhou Veterinary

Mahalo to Rotary Club of Kona and
Denny’s Restaurant for partnering with

Mahalo to Mauna Lani Bay Resort &
Bungalows for their annual Festival of Trees
during the holidays. Although HIHS wasn’t
among the top three vote-getters, we
appreciate being able to participate in this
charitable endeavor.
And finally our heartfelt Mahalo to the
Atherton Family Foundation for their
generous donation of $15,000 to the Katie
Fund, a targeted Spay/Neuter Fund to help
the community address pet over-population.
Through the generosity of supporters such

RECYCLING FOR THE ANIMALS
Jordan & Nicole Vedelli turned in their HI-5 recycle
items and raised $90 which they promptly donated
for the animals at HIHS Waimea shelter. What a
wonderful idea!
KEAAU SHELTER STAFF
Sometimes, you just don’t know how the day will go. Not too long before
Christmas, Keaau Animal Control Officer Stanley Yugong happened upon a
family with young children. He could readily see the children were not
going to have a very merry Christmas. Stanley spread the word among his
co-workers and in a few days’ time, they had gifts galore wrapped and
ready to deliver in time for Christmas. This selfless action truly
demonstrates the heart of Hawaii Island Humane Society. We are proud to
have them on our team.
CELEBRATING ADOPTION SUCCESS
“Aloha. I just wanted to let you know that Sweet
Pea is doing great. She now weighs over 17
pounds and loves to take walks with me in the
rainforest where we live. She is very happy here
and we are truly blessed to have her. Thank you for
your dedicated service to our animals here on the
island.”
Thanks, Patrick O’Kelley
LANDSCAPERS EXTRODINAIRE
Mahalo to Cynthia Marie Mundo and her granddaughter Tisha Kalei Souza
who spent an October weekend pulling weeds, moving rocks and planting
low maintenance succulents around the Waimea Humane Society shelter
sign. The dynamic duo plans to maintain their work throughout the year.
Thank you both so much!

PLANNED GIVING
There is no better way to begin this New Year on a positive note than by making a donation to Hawaii Island Humane Society.
Perhaps when meeting with your tax advisor you may want to discuss the idea of Planned Giving whereby you create a legacy of
compassion towards animals in your will or trust. You can be confident your gift will be used to help advance HIHS’ mission by
providing lasting financial support.
You may restrict your bequest to a particular program such as the Horse Rescue Fund, the Katie Fund or the 2nd Chance Fund and
HIHS will work with you to ensure your wishes are met.
Your bequest to Hawaii Island Humane Society could be a specified dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or an asset or group
of assets. According to law, bequests are distributed after all debts, taxes and expenses of your estate have been paid.

PET TRIBUTE
It is always a sad and personal experience when we lose a beloved pet. We were particularly
touched by this email we received from Wanda Rowan and John Hodson when their Husky, Obe
(Old Blue Eyes), passed away. “In putting together this tribute to our best friend, OBE-licious, we
came to realize the reason for the lives we shared. He made two desensitized workaholics
understand patience, compassion and love in a whole 'nother realm. Through OBE's life and love
we learned many things but wanted to share what we feel are the most important —
You should walk a lot every day and get some fresh air
Black looks best with white dog fur on it
A little poop in the wrong place is not such a big deal
Adopt your new best friend then see who rescues who (thanks HIHS)
Thanks to everyone who loved and helped us with OBE over the last few years.
Aloha, Wanda & John

BY BEBE ACKERMAN, HUMANE EDUCATOR/COMMUNITY COORDINATOR
As a new year begins, we have so much we look forward to. I begin however by looking
back so that I might extend much deserved thank yous to the volunteers that have given
so much of themselves to the animals in need at our three island shelters.
Margarete has arrived early morning for several years at our Kona shelter where she
cares for the cats. She cleans kennels, makes sure they’re all fed and then she shares her
love. Liz Kover is a tireless dog walker and professional photographer who kindly
donated her time and expertise for our first annual “Santa Paws” Christmas photo event.
Nicky Brockman graciously provides a basic dog training course for dogs on adoption
row and she often helps out at special functions. To the Manadoob kids; Joey, Olivia and
Malayna, thanks for all the help you’ve provided this past year.
In Keaau Liz and Ford come every day to make sure every dog that is able gets a good
walk and plenty of play time, rain or shine! We are also appreciative of Daniel Jones,
Laura Bauer, Diane Wolking and the Huiana Girls.
In Waimea, Cheryl Chestnut helps out early mornings, the busiest time of day. Linda
Smith makes certain dogs get a good walk and she is always among the first to volunteer
for special functions. Grace Uehara always arrives with a smile as do members of the
HPA Humane Society Club that has raised funds for us and collected donations of towels
and blankets. Club members have fostered needy kitties and some have adopted their
own new best friend!
There is simply not enough space to eloquently
thank every volunteer. We depend on our
community to make our shelters a home for many
lost or homeless pets throughout the year. We
couldn’t do it without those who give so unselfishly
of their time and effort. Mahalo Nui Loa & Hauoli
Makahiki Hou!
Animal Control Officer Sandy Coit
has celebrated her 10th anniversary
with HIHS. Sandy is a dedicated
employee who always puts the
animals and their care first. She is
fair, knowledgeable, and thorough
which makes her ideally suited for
her often difficult and sometimes
contentious job. A day’s work might
include assisting the public with a
stray animal, reuniting an owner
with a lost pet or even cleaning and
feeding animals at the Waimea
shelter where Sandy is currently
based. “I love my job, I love the
people I work with,” Sandy shares.
“Much to people’s surprise, we
actually have hearts,” she adds with
a smile.
Sandy, we appreciate all that you do
to help keep the pets on our island
safe.
Aloha,
Bebe, Bagels and Dayzee

Common Household Items Poisonous to Dogs and Cats
DOGS
With many of the following toxins, if your dog ate them less than 3 hours earlier, you can induce
vomiting with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Please call your Veterinarian to ask if this is recommended and
for the right amount for your dog. It is easiest to give to a dog with a turkey baster and it helps to
hold the stomach area and swish it around inside after it is swallowed. Follow up with your
veterinarian to determine whether all toxins were expelled and if any further treatment is necessary.

COMMENTS
Chocolate
(Theobromine)
• Hyperactivity
• Increased heart rate
• Seizures
• Dark and semi-sweet chocolates are much more toxic than milk chocolate.
Macadamia Nuts
• Paralysis of the back
legs (can’t walk)
• Dripping urine
Usually
dogs
are okaychocolates
after the toxins
are processed by the body.
• Dark
and
semi-sweet
are much
more toxic than milk chocolate.
Bufo Toad
• Drooling, crying,
pawing at mouth
• Irregular heart rate
• Seizures
• Death
• The poison is absorbed through the gums and tissues in the mouth.
• If you notice your dog playing with a toad, rinse out his/her mouth with water steadily (like
with a garden hose) for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Then call your Veterinarian.
• Smaller dogs get a much higher dosage of poison and are at much greater risk for death.
Antifreeze
• Kidney failure
• Depressed activity
• It takes very little antifreeze to kill a dog or cat.
• Treatment by a veterinarian needs to be initiated as soon as possible to prevent irreversible
kidney damage.
Rat poison
• Blood can’t clot
• When noticed early enough, can easily be treated with Vitamin K1 (only available through a
veterinarian).
• If the poison has already been absorbed, the effects are usually pale gums, inactivity and
maybe dark clotted blood between teeth. As the effects persist, your pet may have difficulty
breathing.
Slug/snail bait
• Seizures
• Dogs can survive if seizures are controlled with drugs administered by a veterinarian.
Cigarettes
• Hyperactivity
• Depends on size of your dog and number of cigarettes how bad the effects will be. Heart
attack is a risk.
Marijuana
• Extreme inactivity
• Drooling
• Paralysis
• If you know your dog ate marijuana, be honest with your veterinarian to help ensure your
dog gets the right treatment. Or you could say it was in the neighbor’s yard (wink, wink).
• Usually dogs are fine after the body processes the substance but may need IV fluids if they
ate a lot.
Grapes/Raisins
• Kidney failure
• Vomiting and diarrhea is usually noticed first.
Plants
• Various
• Plants including azaleas, oleanders and poinsettias
CATS
Cats are also commonly poisoned by antifreeze and rat poison. The effects are similar to those seen in dogs. If you think your cat ate
one of these poisons, call your Veterinarian. Vomiting is usually induced in cats by trained professionals. Cats can also be poisoned
by chewing on tiger lilies which will cause kidney failure. I have also seen kidney failure in a cat which licked ashes from fireworks.
