Event: Take a Visit to Spike Island (Inis Píc)

Venue: Spike Island, Cobh – access from Kennedy Pier, Cobh
Details: Take a visit to this fascinating island in Lower Cork Harbour and learn about its history.
Spike Island was used as used as a monastic settlement, British and later Irish military fortification,
convict depot and from 1985 to 2004 as a civilian prison. Tours of the island take place each day and
the boat over leaves from Kennedy Pier at 13:00 and 14:00 returning at approixmatley 15:30 and 16:30
respectively. Should you not wish to partake in a guided tour there is always the option of getting the
same boat over and taking in the walking trail around the fort, going for a picnic and admiring the views
of Cork Harbour at your own pace!

Heritage Week – coordinated by the Heritage Council and part of the
wider European Heritage Days Programme - takes place in Ireland, 2015,
from August 22nd to 30th. In the County of Cork, over 162 events have been
organised in 58 different locations. This is the highest number of events yet
and it is thanks to the many event organisers and active heritage groups
in the County that such an exciting list has been prepared. In addition,
the majority of events listed are free and suitable for all the family (see
individual listings for full details).
The theme for Heritage Week 2015 is ‘Industrial Heritage’ with the aim
of: “raising the profile and awareness of the value of industrial heritage to
people across Europe”.
