Why choose FIC?
Study a university-designed program that suits your needs, on a university campus, with qualified lecturers,
in smaller classes with longer teaching sessions – and FIC guarantees you entry into second year university.*
University designed programs
and progression to SFU
The University transfer program
(UTP) Stage I is designed to provide
a bridge between high school
and university. It will prepare
you for university studies.
UTP Stage II programs are based on
the first year of the equivalent SFU
Bachelor degree programs listed on
pages 11, 12 and 13. You will obtain
guaranteed transfer to these SFU
programs when you have completed
the specified courses and met
the Grade Point Average (GPA)
specified for your chosen program.*
University Campus with full
access to university facilities
FIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby
campus. You will enjoy full
access to university facilities
and services, including libraries,
computer laboratories, sports and
recreation facilities, on-campus
accommodation, health services
and career services.
Academic support
and tutorials
FIC provides learning support in
the form of free, tutorial classes
and optional meetings with your
lecturers. The tutorials focus
particularly on building English,
Mathematics and Computing skills.
As well as academic support, FIC
provides excellent personal support
in a range of services to ensure that
you are able to reach your goals.
Qualified lecturers, quality
education and additional
instruction time
A quality education is the first step
to a successful future. FIC programs
are designed in a way which helps
to fully reach your potential. They
are delivered and moderated by
highly qualified lecturers that are
approved by SFU to ensure that the
highest standards of teaching are
maintained at all times. In keeping
with our supportive approach,
FIC provides more teaching hours
per course. Instead of traditional
three-hour teaching blocks, FIC
classes are four-hour sessions. This
extra academic contact allows you
to fully develop your knowledge and
understanding of each course.
Affordable tuition fees
and cost of living
FIC represents a reasonable
option for students with a
favorable cost of tuition fees
for quality education combined
with affordable cost of living.
Flexible start dates
Whenever your results are
released, there is an intake
for you. FIC provides the
flexibility of three intakes:
4 January 4May 4September
These dates coincide with SFU’s
intake dates, so no matter when
you finish your program at FIC
there is a new semester at SFU
beginning immediately afterwards.
Small classes
Document assistance
Lectures contain a maximum
of 35 students, often with an
average of only 25 students.
Small classes provide a
personal learning environment
and more opportunities to ask
your teacher questions.
FIC staff and their representatives
will assist you as required to obtain
a Study Permit for studies in
Canada. They will also help with visa
extensions, Medical Services Plan
applications and student ID cards
once you have arrived in Canada.
On campus accommodation
* Entry into second year at SFU is dependent
on students completing the FIC UTP Stage II
program and obtaining the specified Grade
Point Average (GPA), and being formally
admitted to the SFU program (subject to
changes in SFU’s Admissions policy).
As a student of FIC you may
choose to live in SFU Residences
at the Burnaby campus. The
new residences include a
dining hall and a meal plan.

The campus
FIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby Mountain campus in the thriving and culturally diverse city of Burnaby,
a 25-minute drive from downtown Vancouver. The Burnaby campus is one of the most awe inspiring
university settings on the continent, offering a stunning panorama of mountains, cities, ocean and
islands from its location at the summit of 400-meter high Burnaby Mountain.
Designed by internationally
acclaimed architect Arthur Erickson,
the campus has everything you’d
expect of a major university, yet
on a scale that will make you
feel at home. The vast majority
of the 28,000 students pursue
their studies on the pedestrianfriendly campus, which houses
administrative and academic
offices, student services, on-ampus
residences, the main library and
the new UniverCity community
of residences and shops.

For students wanting to live on
campus, SFU provides fully-catered
single room accommodation as
well as an on-campus hotel where
visiting family members can stay.
Buses operate between the campus
and Greater Vancouver’s rapid
transit system at the foot of Burnaby
Mountain on a regular basis.

Navitas offers financial support in
the form of family bursaries. The
Navitas family bursary applies where
two or more students from the same
family study at a Navitas institution.
The first family member can be
studying at a Navitas institution
at the same time as other family
members or may have studied at
any Navitas institution previously.
For the purpose of this bursary,
a family member is defined as
a brother, sister, mother, father,
son, daughter or stepchildren.
The family bursary is granted to
the second and subsequent family
members who study at a Navitas
institution. The bursary is equivalent
to 10 percent of the tuition fee for
the first eight courses of study in
the UTP Stage I and for the first
ten courses of study in the UTP
Stage II. It is credited to the eligible
student’s tuition fee account
each semester (the amount being
relevant to the number of courses
undertaken in that semester). Only
one family bursary will be granted
per student regardless of the
number of family members who
have studied at a Navitas institution.
Please note: For students attending FIC, the
Navitas family bursary is not applicable to
English language programs or any component
of an English language program.

Your accommodation
FIC offers a range of accommodation options to suit your needs. These include oncampus accommodation, homestay and off-campus accommodation.
Students under 19 must be in accommodation acceptable to their parents and FIC.
SFU Residences

FIC students may choose to live
in SFU residences at the Burnaby
campus, just a short walk from
your classes. New residences that
opened in 2004 and 2005 feature
extra long beds, shared TVs and
microwaves in common rooms,

the regular activities that make
residence fun! SFU student staff
and volunteers are there to help you
make the most of your residence
experience – whether it is sharing
study tips, letting you know where to
find the best cup of coffee or inviting
you to join in a volleyball game. For
many students, residence life is
one the most memorable aspects
of their undergraduate experience.

Off-campus accommodation
For many students, the opportunity
to stay with a Canadian family,
off-campus and in the community,
offers a special appeal. As a
homestay student, you will have the
chance to be a part of the family,
taking part in family activities and
celebrating special occasions.

Supporting you while you study
FIC is committed to helping students achieve their goals by providing many support services. As an
FIC student, you will have access to these services as well as the student services offered by SFU.
Study and learning support
Personal support
At FIC, we understand that the
transition to university-level study
can be difficult for some students.
To assist you in developing the study
skills necessary to successfully
complete your program of study,
FIC offers a variety of different study
and learning support services.
A free and confidential advising
service is available to all FIC
students. Things often do not go the
way we had planned or sometimes
problems of a personal nature arise.
An Advisor is available to meet with
you to discuss a range of problems
or concerns that you may have
while you are at FIC. If anything
is preventing you from enjoying
your academic, social or personal
life, then seeing the FIC Advisor is
often a very good start in resolving
these issues. FIC students also
have access to the excellent health
and counselling services of SFU.
Our Student Advisor, in conjunction
with various teaching staff, runs
a number of support tutorials and
workshops throughout the semester
for students who want to develop
their study skills in areas such as
time management, essay writing
and examination techniques.
Peer tutoring programs also run
throughout each semester to assist
students in areas such as math
and English. The Student Advisor
and other teaching staff are also
available for individual or group
appointments throughout the
semester if you need assistance
with assignment drafting,
researching, and referencing.
International students who need
extra help with their spoken
and written English skills will
also find the free English support
tutorials offered each semester
very helpful. We encourage
you to participate fully in these
programs and to contact the
friendly staff at FIC for advice and
assistance as soon as you are
finding things a little difficult.
22
Orientation
Orientation is a series of activities
and programs which provide you
with valuable information and
assistance to help you make a
smooth transition to study at FIC.
What happens at Orientation?
• Select and enroll in courses
and create a timetable
• Obtain program information
• Obtain student ID card
• Obtain information about
your Medical insurance
• Be introduced to FIC services
and facilities
• Tour the campus and library
• Meet new friends and FIC staff
• Students registered for SFU
on-campus accommodation
are automatically registered
for dormitory orientation and
encouraged to participate fully.
Please note: Attendance at Orientation
is compulsory for all new students.
Airport reception
Airport reception information can
be found on the FIC website. For
those students staying in homestay,
the company responsible for
your accommodation will help
you to make arrangements for
airport reception and transfer
to your homestay. Students
staying in Residence will find
airport reception options on the
FIC website in the student life
section. Airport reception must
be booked a minimum of two
weeks in advance of arrival.
Campus security
24-hour security is provided
on all SFU campuses to answer
enquiries and provide assistance
and support to students. Security
can arrange an escort to take
you to your vehicle or on-campus
accommodation, particularly
on weekends or after dark.
tunity
Medical insurance
All international students must have
medical insurance whilst studying
in Canada. Private insurance
must be purchased prior to your
arrival at FIC. David Cummings
Insurance Services Ltd (DCIS) is
FIC’s preferred insurance provider
for medical insurance. For further
details regarding medical insurance,
please contact DCIS by e-mailing
[email protected]
At Orientation, FIC staff will
assist students with completing
application forms for B.C’s Medical
Services Plan (MSP). MSP coverage
commences three months after
your date of arrival in Canada.
This is a mandatory provincial
government plan for all British
Columbia residents. Information
about the British Columbia Medical
Services Plan and how to apply is
available at www.hibc.gov.bc.ca
or at the FIC office. FIC requires
all students to maintain current
health insurance coverage.
Student activities
We understand that for students,
the main reason they are here is to
study, but participating in extracurricular activities and getting out
and about is important too. FIC
encourages you to interact and
enjoy your experience in Canada
by taking a break from your studies
and having some fun. Being involved
in non-academic interests, whilst
studying at FIC, helps you to
develop a network of friends which
broadens your outlook and skills.
FIC offers students the opportunity
to become a certified peer
educator, contribute to the
student newsletter and plan
activities for fellow students.
Students have the chance to
join various events and activities
throughout the semester
organized by either the SFU
Student Association or by FIC.
We encourage you to participate
and enjoy these opportunities.
Disability support
FIC is committed to providing equal
opportunities for students with
disabilities and promotes strategies
to develop a flexible teaching and
learning environment, which is
able to meet the needs of a diverse
range of students. To facilitate the
assessment of support services
which may be required for the
academic program to which you
seek entry, FIC encourages you
to provide information regarding
the nature of your disability
and your special needs during
FIC’s marketing, admission
and enrollment procedures.
Transition to Simon
Fraser University
FIC organizes special information
sessions for students due to
complete their UTP Stage II and
transfer to SFU. In the information
sessions, you are provided with
information about the second
year courses and majors available,
program structure and application
process for your chosen degree. In
addition, you will attend specifically
designed orientation sessions
to help you make a successful
transition to second year of
your degree program at SFU.
A Graduation ceremony is held
on a regular basis for students
who successfully complete
their UTP Stage II at FIC.
FIC is always available to assist
you to ensure that you are able to
succeed in your chosen program
of study. It is important that
you advise the Student Advisor
of your disability as early as
possible so that arrangements
can be made to ensure that you
enjoy your experience at FIC.

Conditions of enrolment
Fees
1. All fees, charges and accounts are payable in advance as
determined by FIC from time to time. Students will not be permitted
to commence or continue their program at the beginning of any
semester until all outstanding fees, charges and accounts are paid.
3. Notification of cancellation or withdrawal from
course(s), or withdrawal or deferral from a program
of study must be made in writing to FIC.
2. Fees are correct at the time of printing. FIC reserves the
right to vary its fees at any time without notice.
4. Students who dispute FIC’s decision regarding a refund, have
access to an independent grievance resolution process. This does
not circumscribe the student’s right to pursue other legal remedies
or take further action under Canada’s consumer protection laws.
3. Where a student studies less than or more than a
full semester load, the student will pay the current
per course fee for each course undertaken.
5. In case of cancellation or withdrawal, the cancellation
fee (and administration charge if relevant) will be
calculated as shown in the table below.
4. Should it be necessary for the student to repeat
a course, the full amount is payable.
6. In case of deferral, the fees will be retained by FIC until
commencement of studies. If the student subsequently withdraws,
the Fee Refund Policy will apply as at the date FIC was advised
in writing of their withdrawal. FIC reserves the right to apply
the Fee Refund Policy to the date of the initial deferral.
5. Any overpayment of fees will remain credited towards
a student’s account and applied against charges in a
subsequent semester unless the student has completed,
cancelled or withdrawn from their program.
6. No refunds are given for tuition fees unless the student has
completed, cancelled or withdrawn from their program.
Study Permit conditions
1. For specific information on Study Permit
Conditions refer to www.cic.gc.ca
2. Study Permits are usually issued for the period of the program.
Students wishing to extend their Study Permit should first consult
FIC for assistance. Students must leave Canada or seek a new
Study Permit before expiration of their current Study Permit.
3. FIC requires that international students pay for private
Medical insurance then join the British Columbia
Medical Services Plan while staying in Canada.
7. Where a Study Permit renewal is rejected due to a breach in Study
Permit conditions, a student must withdraw from FIC and the
cancellation fee will be calculated as shown in the table below.
8. Students whose enrollment is terminated by FIC will not be entitled to
any refund of fees. Any fee refund is wholly at the discretion of FIC.
9. FIC reserves the right to withdraw a program or course(s) from offer
at its discretion. If a student is unable to enroll in a similar program
or course(s) at FIC and the enrollment is cancelled, all fees will
be refunded with the exception of a C$235 administration fee.
10.All refunds under this Fee Refund Policy will be paid within four
(4) weeks of receiving a written claim from the student.
11.Refunds are to be paid to the person who enters into the contract
with FIC, unless the person gives a written direction to FIC to pay
the refund to another person.
