INSTALLATION
Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the basic layout of the UTEC as shown in the
picture below. This information will come in handy when it’s time to actually install the UTEC.
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Precautions
ESD is the multi thousand volt “zap” you feel when get out of your car on a dry day. This ESD
zap can damage electronic devices and should ideally be discharged prior to handling any
electronic device. To prevent ESD, follow the steps below when installing, removing or handling
the UTEC or the factory ECU:
1. Always turn off the ignition before removing or installing the ECU or the UTEC.
2. Handle the ECU and the UTEC as little as possible.
3. Transport and store the UTEC in a static -protected bag or container.
4. Do not slide the UTEC or the ECU over any surface.
5. Discharge yourself by touching an exposed metal chassis point before installing or removing
the ECU or the UTEC when connecting the UTEC to a laptop. Alternatively, wear a grounded
antistatic wrist strap to discharge the stat ic voltage from your body.
6. Do not touch the connector pins of the ECU or the UTEC.
7.
Avoid handling the ECU or the UTEC in areas that have floor or work-surface covering
capable of generating a static charge.

INSTALLING THE UTEC
1.
The STI/WRX™ Engine Control Unit (ECU) is located in the passenger side footwell
under the carpet.
To access it, remove the plastic screws fixing the carpet to the
floor and pull back the carpet.
2.
Ensure that the ignition switch is OFF and has been OFF for at least 5 minutes or
disconnect the car battery.
3.
Use a 10mm socket wrench to remove the nuts holding the kick plate in place. Use
the same wrench to remove the 2 nuts holding the ECU to the floor.
4.
Disconnect the five connectors from the wiring harness to the ECU by depressing the
locking tabs and carefully lever the connectors out with a flathead screwdriver. DO
NOT pull on the wires.
5.
Remove the ECU from the car.
6.
Remove the screws holding the ECU cover and fit ECU Standoffs to the ECU.

7.
Fit the black GROUND LINK from the UTEC Grounding Plug to a good ground on the
car.
8.
One of the bolts on the X-Frame that holds the ECU down should be fine.
Fit the three (3) kick plate stand offs to the lower 3 bolts of the X-frame .

Fit the kick plate J-bracket to the upper bolt of the X-Frame (optional).
10.
Fit the UTEC on top of the factory ECU with the UTEC female connector directly
above the factory female connector (pictured below). Use the two captive screws on
the UTEC and 2 of the ECU case screws to mount the UTEC to the factory ECU.

11.
If you have a Revision 5 or 6 UTEC (the revision number is printed on the green PC
board under the UTEC’s wire cover or on the back of the PCB near the main
connector), both the toggle switches under the cover plate should be set to position
closest to the main connector for normal operation. If you intend to run more then
20psi of boost pressure you should take this opportunity to ensure that the fuel cut
switch is set to the position pointing towards the UTEC’s serial port. If you have
board revisions 1-4, ensure that the 8 position dipswitch under the wire cover is set
to the following:

If you intend to run more then 20psi of boost you must move the FCD
switch into the position away from the main connector in addition to
changing the software based fuel cut in the open loop parameters
section.

Plug the 5 male UTEC connectors into the factory ECU. Ensure that the connectors
“click” into place.
13.
Connect the serial cable to the serial port of the UTEC.
You can leave this cable
connected all the time for easier tuning access.

14.
If you are installing the optional remote switch or if you plan on using the UTEC’s
spare solenoid output, plug the remote switch or the white accessory harness into
the accessory plug on the back of the UTEC. The accessory plug is the white 12 pin
Molex connector on the back of the UTEC.
NOTE: To use the remote switch, the map selector switch on the body of the
UTEC must be set to switch position “0”
15.
Plug the factory harness into the UTEC female connectors.
Ensure that the
connectors “click” into place. Carefully reroute the car harness under the case.
16.
Reinstall the UT EC/ECU combo using the 10mm nuts that hold the factory ECU to the
X-frame . A common mistake here is to install the upper ECU mount on the right
most X-frame stud. When this happens the ECU will not allow for the reinstallation of
the ECU kick-plate. Take care to avoid this mistake.
17.
This is an excellent time to take one last look at the UTEC switches to ensure that
they are in the correct position. Once you verify the UTEC is properly setup and
plugged in, it is recommended that you attempt to start the car. Note that when
starting a car with a UTEC installed you should turn the key to the ON position and
let it sit there for a second before engaging the starter. This will give the UTEC
adequate time to run though it’s boot-up procedure.
18.
If you are going to tune the car, we recommend that you do not re-install the
kickplate and carpet. Wait until tuning is completed as you may need access to the
UTEC to switch between maps.

INSTALLING THE AUXILIARY BOOST CONTROLLER (ABC)
1.
Pop the hood and find the turbo.
Identify the vacuum hose that runs from the “T”
piece in the wastegate control vacuum line to the wastegate boost control solenoid
(see the diagram below).
2.
Remove the plastic hose coupler that connects the two pieces of the wastegate boost
control solenoid hose. This can be a little tough to remove, so use a pair of pliers.
3.
Install the Auxiliary Boost Controller (ABC) by inserting the empty legs of the “Y”
piece in place of the black plastic hose coupler as in the diagram and picture below.

4.
Mount the ABC next to the wastegate solenoid, see the following figure.

NOTE: You must install and adjust the ABC on your WRX for the UTEC boost control to
work properly on a WRX. On an STI it is not strictly needed.
If you do not intend to

it is much harder to look at a computer screen than a boost gauge while driving!

SOFTWARE SETUP
1.
Ensure that HyperTerminal™ or a VT100 emulator program is installed on your PC or
laptop.
If
you
are
using
HyperTerminal™,
it
is
typically
located
in
the
Programs\Accessories\Communications folder that is accessed from the Start menu.
HyperTerminal™ is included as part of your Windows™ Operating System. If it is not
installed, you may need to install it from your Windows™ CD.
2.
Start up HyperTerminal™ from the Start menu as shown in the following figure.
3.
HyperTerminal™ should ask you whether you want to create a “new connection” as
shown in the following figure.

4.
Enter a name for the “new connection” as shown in the following figure.
5.
HyperTerminal™ will ask you what you want to “connect to”. Select the appropriate
serial communications port as shown in the following figure and click “OK”.
6.
Configure the serial port to 19200 bits per second, 8 bit, no parity, one stop bits, no
flow control as shown in the following figure.

7.
Save this setup by using the “File” menu. If you save it onto your desktop or place a
shortcut to this on your desktop then you will be able to easily access this in the
future.
CHANGING THE SOFTWARE SETUP
1.
If you want to change the settings then click on “Disconnect” on HyperTerminal™ as
shown in the following figure.

Click on “properties” as shown in the following figure.

OPERATION
FIRST START UP
1.
Connect the serial cable attached to the UTEC to the serial connector on the PC or
Laptop taking ESD precautions (discharge to ground first).
2.
Turn the UTEC map switch (rotary or remote) to the position of the UTEC map you
wish to run.
3.
Turn ON the ignition to the car. If you have the UTEC exposed you should be able to
see a small red light indicating power is available. It is recommended that you allow
a few seconds for the UTEC and ECU to boot up and for your fuel system to prime
each time you start the car.
4.
NOTE:
The following screen should appear on HyperTerminal™.
The screen may look slightly different depending on the software version
you are running.
5.
Start the car and check that it idles and runs okay.
If not, double-check the
installation. If the installation appears to be correct and the car st ill does not start or
run properly, stop and call TurboXS for technical support toll free at
877.887.2679. If we are closed, remove the UTEC and call us M-F, 9am-5pm EST.

6.
MAPs are selected using the rotary switch at the rear of the UTEC or with the remote
switch. If you are using the remote switch, you must have the UTEC rotary switch
set to position “0.”
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.
Stock mode is selected with the rotary switch at the rear of the UTEC set to “0”. If
the remote switch is fitted this should also be set to “0”. You can not run stock
mode if you have upgraded your injectors!
2.
Maps 1 through 5 are selected by turning the rotary switch at the rear of the UTEC to
“1” to “5”. If the remote switch is installed, ensure that the rotary switch at the rear
of the UTEC is set to “0” and select the map you want using the remote switch.
Switching between maps will take effect only when the engine is below
1600 rpm. Use caution when switching maps.
The UTEC Dashboard will show both the number of the Map and the switch position
that is selected once the car is running.
If the car is not running the UTEC may
revert back to stock mode. Also, when starting the car the check engine light will
flash and indicate which map you have selected. For example if you have selected
map 2 the check engine light will flash twice and then stay on until the car is started.
3.
Valet mode is selected by turning the switch to Map 6. This lowers maximum boost
to 7 psi, runs limited timing and uses your Map 1 fuel map (note this is why we
recommend placing your conservative street map in Map 1). The valet will have no
fun hotrodding in your WRX!
4.
Security mode is selected by turning the switch to Map 7.
This only disables the
engine once the ECU and UTEC have been powered down. If activated, the security
mode will continuously flash the CEL. To exit the security mode select an alternative
Map.
5.
Switch position 8 = stock mode (repeated)
6.
Switch position 9 = Map 1 (repeated)
NOTE:
If you enable the launch control feature but don’t have a clutch switch
installed then maps 0-7 will always have the launch control rev-limit engaged (i.e. if
your launch control rev limit is set at 5500rpm you will not be able to rev past
5500rpm). Switch positions 8 and 9 will always override the clutch switch so will not
run launch control.

7.
The UTEC HOME MENU is shown in the following figure. From here you can access
the Edit Map functions for modifying Maps and Parameters, the Dashboard for real
time data viewing, the main Logger screen or the Data Logger screens.
8.
The UTEC comes pre-programmed with a base map on Map 1 (switch position 1).
Other base maps may be downloaded off our website at www.turboxs.com.

If the engine should stall or has been stopped, it is good practice to turn OFF the
ignition and then turn it ON before restarting. This ensures that both the UTEC and
the ECU restart in an orderly manner.

EDITING INFORMATION
1.
Editing maps may be performed while the ignition key is in the "ON" position with or
without the car running.
Maps must be saved in order to retain any changes you
make. Maps can be saved under the same conditions as editing (ignition key must
be in the "ON" position, car running or not). You can only save while idling, not
moving.
If the car is on when you save a Map, the car will run rough for the brief
moment that the changes are being saved. In some cases, the car may even shut
off. However, as long as the ignition key remains in the "ON" position, the changes
will be saved.
2.
Auxiliary power can be supplied to the UTEC via a 9V battery using the supplied 9V
battery power cable. This will allow you to access the UTEC using a standalone PC
while the UTEC is not installed in the car. You can edit maps, copy maps from your
PC to your UTEC, upgrade software, etc. from the comfort of your office chair instead
of the driver’s seat. We recommend the use of a good quality alkaline battery. The
9V battery should last a few hours so it is only meant as a means to allow you to
download and upload programs and maps.
3.
Menus can be selected using the keyboard on your PC or laptop in HyperTerminal™.
Command prompts are at the bottom of each screen with brief descriptions.
4.
The same keys are generally used for moving the cursor around the UTEC screens.
The “wasd” key cluster or the “ijkl” cluster can be used to move the cursor:
ALWAYS ENSURE THAT CAPS LOCK IS OFF!!
“w” or “i” moves cursor up
“a” or “j” moves cursor left
“d” or “l” moves cursor right
“s” or “k” moves cursor down
“TAB” moves cursor down
“ENTER” selects or inserts
“CTRL” and “SHIFT” plus other keys are used for several functions
“CTRL and x” typically exits the Menu
“ESC” typically cancels a selection
“SPACE” starts and stops the data logger
Possible keystroke commands are displayed at the bottom of each screen
along with brief explanation prompts for each keystroke.

EDIT MAPS AND PARAMETERS
IMPORTANT:
THE VALUE S IN MAPS DEPENDS ON CERTAIN PARAMETER
CONSTANTS.
WHENEVER MODIFYING OR LOADING MAPS YOU SHOULD
ENSURE THAT THE CORRECT PARAMETERS CONSTANTS ARE USED.
From the "HOME MENU", move down to "EDIT MAPS" and hit ENTER to access the
"SELECT A MAP GROUP OR FUNCTION" screen shown below. This is where all tuning
gets done. You can either select from the 5 Map groups ("MAP 1" through "MAP 5")
to individually edit that group’s fuel, timing, and boost tables. Alternatively, you can
select "PARAMETERS" and edit the variables and functions that are applied to all Map
groups globally. Move the cursor to what you want to edit (Map # or PARAMETERS)
and select it with the ENTER key as shown in the following figure.

This will bring you to the MAP GROUP EDITOR screen shown in the following figure.

From this screen you can select the FUEL MAP, TIMING MAP, or BOOST MAP for
editing.
3.
In
addition
to
the
keystrokes
described
above,
there
are
some
keystroke
combinations that can be used in the Fuel, Ignition Timing and Boost maps to speed
the tuning process:
“SHIFT <wasd> or <ijkl>” lets you select a large block or RPM/Load points
“CTRL and f” allows you to fill in the same value in the entire block
“CTRL and c” lets you copy an entire block into another area of the map
“CTRL and u” lets you add or subtract from an entire block by any value up to 1
decimal place (use this with care!)

FUEL TUNING
A. MAF based
1.
Fuel tuning is done via a two-dimensional matrix of RPM vs. Load %.
2.
The load reference for column 0% is throttle position, as measured via the TPS
(Throttle Position Sensor).
3.
For columns 10% to 100%, the load reference is Manifold Absolute Pressure (as
measured via the MAP sensor).
4.
The UTEC's default settings for load reference are as follows: Column 0% is used to
tune all points in the fuel and ignition timing maps from 0% to 25% throttle position.
Once past 25% throttle position, the load reference switches to MAP.
The UTEC
default MAP range is from 0 PSI at 10% to 18PSI at 100%.
5.
Both the TPS to MAP crossover point, and the MAP range is adjustable in the
"PARAMETERS" sub- menus.
6.
The User should be aware that there is a background AFR map in the UTEC which is
similar to the factory ECU map. The factory ECU is no longer in control of fuelling
past the set throttle position threshold (25%). All fuel map changes will be similar to
previous UTEC software fuel mapping. However, if transferring a map from a
previous version of the UTEC software it is HIGHLY recommended that further Tuning
or AFR checks be made to ensure that the map is suitable for the car.
7.
The values that are typed into each RPM/Load point will increase or decrease the
mass air flow (MAF) sensor voltage by the percentage inserted. This will then change
the look up point used in the UTEC background map for injector pulse-width
calculation. Additional voltage leads to additional fuel. Inversely, decreasing the MAF
voltage will lead to less fuel being injected.
8.
For example, let's assume a value of -10% is typed in at 4000 RPM/50% column. If
TPS is greater then 25%, MAF voltage is 3.1 volts as RPM reaches 4000, and boost is
at 50% of the programmed range, the UTEC will reduce the voltage that the ECU
sees to 2.79 volts. This will result in less fuel being injected, thus a leaner Air/Fuel
Ratio (AFR). In the last example, if TPS was less then 25%, the UTEC will use the
value in the 4000RPM/0% column to mo dify the MAF signal, since TPS was below the
programmed 25% TPS threshold. This value is typically 0 unless larger then stock
injectors are installed.

B. Speed Density Mode
The UTEC is now capable of speed density fueling. This will allow the utec to function in a more
standalone manner when required for use with modifications that commonly push the stock
WRX/STI MAF sensor beyond its normal limits.
Speed density fuel works by calculating fuel using a VE table, AFR table, Injector size, Engine
Capacity, number of cylinders, Manifold Pressure and Intake Air Temp.
This implementation of Speed Density for the UTEC allows :
• VE table to be edited in the maps
• Engine capacity to be specified (1994cc to 3000cc)
• Injector size to be specified
The number of cylinders is assumed to be 4 cylinders. The AFR table is the same as the table
used for the MAF Open Loop fuelling. Intake air temp is measured at the MAF sensor which
approximates the intake at the manifold.
To use Speed density fuelling:
1. Turn on Open Loop fuelling.
PARAMETERS- >OPEN LOOP FUELLING- > Open Loop Fuelling (OFF = 0, ON = 1)
Set this to ‘1’.
2. Set the Injector Flow parameter to the correct injector flow.

4. Set Fuel mode to Speed Density.

5. Check that Injector dead time parameter is filled in with the correct value for the
injectors that are used. The Subaru injector dead time is approximately 728 uS.
NOTE: The more accurate the injector dead time used will mean that future changes to
injector flow sizing will result in less re-tuning to achieve the same AFR’s.

6. Set the engine capacity to the correct engine capacity in cc’s.

7. Set the desired TPS, MAF and RPM thresholds as desired in the open loop fueling
parameters.
8. Check the MAP Minimum Value for mapping and MAP Maximum Value for mapping to
establish the scale for the 10% to 100% columns of the fuel map.

9. Select which map to use using the map switch.
10. Edit the Fuel map:
The 0% column represents the MAF voltage change percentage. This functions exactly the same
as for the Mass Air Flow mode of Open Loop Fuelling.
The 10% to 100% columns represent the Relative Volumetric Efficiency of the engine for the
given manifold pressure and RPM. Relative VE takes into account the pressure in the manifold,
so the relative VE values will stay mostly within 75% to 110% even as boost rises. The relative
VE is a ration how much of the available air molecules in the manifold got into the combustion
chamber.
• A zero value represents 100% relative VE.
• A negative value represents a relative VE of less than 100%.
e.g. –15 is (100 - 15) = 85% VE.
• A positive value represents a relative VE of greater than 100%.
e.g. 5 is (100 + 5) = 105%.
A zero map will make an engine run typically 15% to 5% too rich. Above is an example of the
VE map for a 2003 2L WRX.
There is a background AFR map used for the Speed Density calculations. This map represents a
typical case tuned WRX or STI.

IGNITION TUNING
1.
Tuning ignition timing is very similar to tuning fuel.
2.
Tuning is done via a two-dimensional matrix of RPM vs. Load %.
3.
Like tuning fuel, the load reference for column 0% is throttle position (via the TPS
sensor) based.
4.
For columns 10% to 100% the load reference is manifold absolute pressure (via the
MAP sensor).
5.
The UTEC's default settings have the UTEC using column 0% for all fuel and ignition
timing up to 25% throttle position.
Once throttle position exceeds 25%, the load
reference then switches to MAP. The UTEC's defaults set the MAP tuning range from
0 PSI at 10% to 20 PSI at 100%. Below is a table that shows the range of each load
column if using the defaults:

Both the TPS to MAP crossover point and the MAP range is adjustable in the
Parameters menu.
7.
The values that are typed in each RPM/Load point in the timing map are actual
ignition timing in degrees "Before Top Dead Center" (BTDC). The UTEC will fire the
ignition coils based on those values.
If an "e" is programmed into an RPM/Load
point, the map will show "ECU" in that load point, and will fire the coils at the same
number of degrees BTDC that the stock ECU would.
For example, let’s assume a
value of "25" is programmed into the map at the 5000RPM/80% load column.
If
throttle position is greater then 25% the UTEC will fire the coils at 25 degrees BTDC

when at that load point. In the last example, if throttle position is less then 25%,
the UTEC will use the value in the 5000RPM/0% load column for it's ignition timing.
Typically "ECU" will be programmed at that point.

BOOST TUNING
WARNING: High boost levels can lead to detonation and severe engine damage!
A. Open loop/closed loop boost
1.
Boost control tuning is done via a two-dimensional matrix of RPM vs. TPS %.
2.
The UTEC can operate either in open loop or closed loop boost control.
3.
If you are in open loop boost control (the default mode), the values typed into each
map point range from 0-100 and represent the Boost Control Solenoid (BCS) duty
cycle. If an "e" is programmed into a map point, the map will show "ECU" at that
point, and will open and close the BCS at the same duty cycle as the stock ECU. For
example, let's assume a value of 60 is programmed into the map at the
5000RPM/100% column. If throttle position is 100%, the UTEC will cycle the BCS at
60% duty cycle.
4.
If you are in closed loop boost control, the values typed into each map point range
from 0-500 and represent a target boost level. The boost gain also can be modified.
This can be found in the Special Constants part of the Edit Maps/Parameters menu.
NOTE: The values entered are unit-less values and are NOT in psi, kPa or
Bar. The larger the number, the higher the boost level. Tuning is required to
dial in your desired boost level for your particular setup. The scale of the boost map
is from 1-500 typically you’ll want to start your closed loop tuning at a value of about
200 and work your way up in small steps.
5.
The Auxiliary Boost Controller (ABC) must be installed if you intend to have
the UTEC control boost on your WRX (regardless of whether you are using open
loop or closed loop boost control). The ABC acts as a supplementary bleed valve to
the boost control solenoid allowing for higher wastegate pressure bleed off. This will
consequently allow for higher boost levels.
6.
The UTEC hardware moves the over boost fuel cut to ~20.5psi. To prevent the stock
ECU from seeing boost pressure in excess of 20.5psi, change Dipswitch position 2 to
the DOWN position or move the FCD switch to the “A” position (closest to the UTEC’s
serial port). Additionally in the UTEC Open Loop Fuelling parameter menu there is a
software based fuel cut that can be set from between 0-40psi.
B. PID boost control mode
An additional boost control algorithm has been added which behaves similar to the DTEC
boost controller. The new algorithm can be activated by selecting option ‘2’ in the following
parameters which can be found in SPECIAL CONSTANTS.

Boost Control (CLOSED = 0, OPEN = 1, PID = 2) (0 to 2)
When PID control is selected, the boost maps take on the following format:
•
The 0% column represents the Target Boost in psi.
•
The 10% to 100% columns represent the base duty cycle of the solenoid. e.g. A value of
60
will
drive
the
solenoid
to
60%
duty
when
the
map
cell
is
used.
The TPS position determines which column to use. i.e. The 100% column is used when
at 100%TPS, the 50% column is used when at 50% TPS, the 10% column is used at
10%
or
less
TPS.
The RPM determines which row to use.
The PID algorithm is turned on whenever a non-zero gain value is used. A zero gain disables
the PID algorithm and the duty cycle from the table will be used. Too high a gain value may
lead to boost oscillation or overshoot. Too low a gain value will result in slower reacting
boost control.

There is a known HyperTerminal bug (some would say feature) that forces you to
save the map to a new file name. If you do not do this, you can get a checksum
error when you try to reload these maps onto your UTEC. Therefore, we recommend
you rename your map file every time you save it.

4.
When the map % counter is finished select from the HyperTerminal Menu
“Transfer\Capture Text \Stop”.
TRANSFERRING MAPS FROM YOUR PC TO THE UTEC

You must

USER CONSTANTS
User constants let you tune some of the basic and auxiliary functions of the UTEC.
1.
Shift Light lets you set the 3 RPM points at which to turn on the optional three color
shift light. Shift point 1 should be less than shift point 2 and shift point 2 should be
less than shift point 3. The RPM setting is in x100, e.g. 65 is 6500 rpm.
2.
Spare Solenoid lets you program the conditions at which you want to switch on the
spare solenoid.
You can set values for RPM, Throttle Position, Intake Air
Temperature, Coolant Temperature, or Manifold Absolute Pressure. The spare
solenoid uses “AND” logic. That is, all values must be above the setpoints for the
spare solenoid to switch ON. For example, if you want to turn the Spare Solenoid
when RPM is greater than 3000 rpm and TPS is greater than 50% then set RPM to
65, TPS % to 50.
Set the other parameters to a low value such as Intake Air
Temperature to 0, Coolant Temperature to 0 and Manifold Absolute Pressure to –50.
3.
Spare Solenoid Off Delay lets you set the time that the spare solenoid will remain on
after the conditions are no longer met. This may be used to keep the spare solenoid
on during a gear change.

4.
CEL lets you disable the Check Engine Light (CEL) also known as the Malfunction
Indicator Light (MIL).
You can disable it by changing the value from the default
value of 1 to 0. If you do this, the CEL will no longer light when you throw a code.
However, the codes will still be stored in the ECU and can be retrieved and cleared
with an OBD2 scan tool.
NOTE:
YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY CEL WARNING DURING DRIVING WHEN
THIS OPTION IS SELECTED WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A KNOCK WARNING.
USE THIS OPTION WITH CAUTION !!
5.
MAP Display allows you to select whether you wish to display the absolute pressure
relative to 1 atmosphere or gauge pressure.
NOTE: This ONLY applies to the logger and dashboard MAP readings. Load
points are always in absolute pressure.
6.
Baud rate lets you set the communication speed of the UTEC. The default is 19200
but some older PC may have serial ports that can only support a 4800 baud rate.
7.
Launch Control RPM lets you set the RPM point for the secondary launch control revlimiter.
8.
Launch Control lets you enable/disable launch control as well as control which mode of
secondary rev- limiting you want to use. The choices are injector cut (INJ) which cuts fuel
delivery to limit revs, and ignition cut (IGN) which cuts ignition spark to limit revs.
CAUTION:
NITROUS OXIDE INJECTION REQUIRES THAT YOU TO
SELECT THE IGNITION CUT ONLY!!!
9.
Flat Shift RPM launch control now has two RPM settings. Below 13 mph (20km/h) the
“Launch Control RPM” setting operates. Above 13 mph (20km/h) the “Flat Shift RPM”
setting operates. This allows the user to have a different launch RPM and flat shift RPM
points.
WARNING:
Using launch control will subject your clutch and gearbox to
higher than normal loads. Failure of these components can occur
WARNING:
Launch control will subject your engine to unusual loads. The
use of launch control in the ignition cut mode will subject your catalytic
converter to an overly rich mixture.
Damage to these components can
occur.

TUNER CONSTANTS
NOTE:
Use caution when modifying the Knock Constants.
Normally there
should be no need to change these values. Ensure you understand what and
why you are changing these values.
1.
Knock Thresholds are set for eight (8) different RPM ranges. Lower numbers reduce
sensitivity. Therefore, for a more conservative knock correction setting, increase the
threshold value.
2.
Knock Count Threshold sets the number of Knock Counts required to retard ignition
timing. Normally this should be kept a low number to quickly catch any knock.
3.
Knock Retard Step is the number of degrees the UTEC will retard ignition timing for
each crank cycle that the Knock Count is greater than the Knock Count Threshold.
4.
Knock Maximum Retard is the maximum amount of degrees the UTEC will retard
ignition timing.
5.
Knock Retard Duration is the number of crank cycles the UTEC will retard ignition
timing for each knock count.

6.
CEL knock count Threshold determines the severity of the knock even that is
required to flash the CEL.
7.
Timing Maps Knock retard Step is the amount of timing the UTEC will pull as a global
correction to the active timing map when a knock event is recorded
8.
Timing Maps Knock Maximum Retard is the value that determines the UTEC’s
authority range for retarding timing from the programmed map.
9.
Timing Map Knock Window Time determines how long the UTEC will wait before
making another global timing adjustment.
SPECIAL CONSTANTS
IMPORTANT: Use extreme caution when modifying these parameters as mistakes can
result in major engine damage.
1.
Boost Control Gain is used to adjust the ramp up rate of the boost controller while in
Closed Loop Boost control. Lower numbers mean faster spool-up but a higher risk of
overboosting.
Higher numbers slow spool-up but reduce risk of overboosting.
Tuning is required to find the best compromise for your particular setup.
2.
This parameter holds the wastegate solenoid fully open while the MAP is below the
user set level and the TPS is greater than 80%. This allows for a faster spool up of
the turbo. The level must be set so that it is below the tuned boost level including

any intentional reduction in boost at high RPMs. As a starting point it is suggested
that this parameter be set at 6 psi less than the minimum boost setting. The use of
this parameter may also allow the lowering of the Boost Gain value.
3.
Boost Control (Closed, Open, PID) is used to select the type of boost control. Closed
loop boost control uses totally different values to the open loop boost control and so
a new boost map must be used whenever this parameter is changed.
Remember,
the values in the closed loop boost map are unit-less values that do not represent
psi, kPa or Bar.
Open Loop boost map values represent Boost Control Solenoid
percent duty cycle. PID changes the format of the boost map to a PID map with a
target boost in the 0% column and a solenoid duty cycle in the boost map. See
earlier notes on boost control for further information.
4.
MAP Calibration (Gradient) and (Intercept) are used to calibrate the MAP sensor.
5.
MAP Minimum Value for Mapping is the lowest MAP value in psi for the MAP
referenced columns in the fuel and timing maps (the 10% column).
6.
MAP Maximum Value for Mapping is the highest MAP value in psi for the MAP
referenced columns in the fuel and timing maps (the 100% column).
7.
TPS Minimum Value for Mapping is used to calibrate the TPS sensor.
Modify the
value so that the TPS value on the Dashboard reads 0% when the throttle is not
being touched.
8.
TPS Maximum Value for Mapping is used to calibrate the TPS sensor. Modify the
value so that the TPS value reads 100% when the throttle is fully depressed. You
can do this using the Dashboard with the key in and in the ‘ON’ position but the car
off.
Fully depress the throttle and make modify the voltage value until it reads
100% at WOT.
9.
TPS Threshold Point for Mapping sets the % of Throttle Position at which the UTEC
switches over from using the 0% column in the Fuel and Timing Maps to the any of
the 10% to 100% MAP based load reference columns.
With open loop fuelling
enabled this feature has no impact.
10.
MAF Scaling Enabled allows the use of the injector scaling for non closed loop fuelling
applications.
11.
Boost map 5- > spare Sol. This allows the use of Boost Map 5 to control the spare
solenoid in a duty cycle mode (0 to 100%). The load indicator used is MAP and not
TPS. The selection of this option will cause a change in the edit map menu.
12.
Tuner Pin Number, a 4 digit PIN number can now be applied to provide prevent
unauthorized users from viewing or modifying maps.

Special Constants Menu (Note that the number is displayed as a “****”). If the PIN
number is set to 0000 (default value) then the PIN number function is disabled. If
an incorrect PIN number is entered the UTEC will display an incorrect PIN number
message for 5 seconds. There is no master PIN in the UTEC software, so if you set
this and forget the PIN the only way to make your UTEC usable again is to re-flash it
with the current UTEC software. This action will cause a complete loss of your UTEC
maps.
Open Loop Fuelling
Note You must reset the UTEC (power off and then back on) after making changes to
this section!
1. Open Loop Fuelling sets the Utec’s open loop fuel control. You have a choice of
piggybacking off the stock ECU or using standalone fuelling based off the UTEC”s
background MAF vs RPM table. When open loop is set to “on” you are using the UTEC’s
background fuel map.
2. Injector Flow (cc per min) allows you to scale the background open loop fuel map if you
have installed larger aftermarket injectors in y our car.
3. Stock injector flow lets you set the base injector size your stock ecu is programmed for.

4. Special note: DO not use the injector scaling in conjunction with base-maps
created off software prior to version 4.2! Previous versions of UTEC software (prior
to version 4) scaled the injectors though MAF sensor signal offsets (ie large negative
numbers in the stage 4 basemap). In the new software you can choose to handle this
with the use of injector scaling. If however you want to run a previously tuned map, the
injector scaling figure should be left to it’s default setting.
5. Rev Limiter Control (x100) (USE WITH CAUTION!!!) allows you to control the RPM the
primary rev-limiter will kick in on your WRX. This value can be set from 5000rpms to
9000rpms. Use extreme caution when setting the limit to higher then stock levels as it is
highly likely you will damage the motor if you raise the rev-limit. We highly recommend
that you keep the stock setting of 7300rpms. There is a soft rev-limit that will kick in
250rpms before your set hard limit.
6. Open Loop TPS Threshold (%) (0 to 100) The lower limit now allows zero TPS. It is
recommended that a zero TPS be used only when a MAP threshold above idle vacuum is
used. Adjust the TPS threshold to suit your driving style or your particular application.
7. Overboost fuel cut lets you set your desired boost level for the UTEC to cut the injectors
as a safety measure against overboost.
8. Closed loop to open loop delay; when the UTEC transits from closed to open loop it
interpolates the AFR from the last closed loop AFR to the target open loop AFR.
The
time it takes to do this is controlled by this parameter.
9. Open loop to closed loop delay; When the UTEC transits from open to closed loop it
delays the time it takes to switch.

vehicles this may cause the engine speed to “flare” during gear shift. If this occurs then
set this value to 0.
10. MAP threshold hysteresis (psi) When using a MAP threshold for Open Loop Fuelling,
some hysteresis is helpful to reduce any oscillations in and out of Open Loop Fuelling
mode when the manifold pressure is right near the threshold.
Example:
Assume MAP threshold is –9psi, and the MAP threshold hysteresis is 2psi. Also assume that
the TPS threshold and RPM thresholds have been met or exceeded.
If Open Loop Fuelling is off, then Open Loop Fuelling will not be enabled until MAP is (-9psi
+ 2psi) = -7psi or greater. When Open Loop fuelling is on, then Open Loop fueling will stay
on until –9psi or less, is reached.

The above correction tables apply to Open Loop Fuelling. The corrections are interpolated
across the 4 temperature points. Temperatures outside of the range use the nearest
correction point.
The Temperature compensation parameters section allows timing and fuel corrections to be
applied to all maps based on air temperature.

LOGGER
The Logger screen allows you to data log key tuning parameters:

To start Logging, simply follow the directions on the screen (or commit the following
steps to memory!):
1.
From the HyperTerminal™ Menu, select “Transfer\Capture Text” and Type in
<filename.txt> to select the datalog filename.
Note that the file must be saved
directly in the HyperTerminal™ directory. If you do not want to lose old data logs,
be sure to give each log file a unique name.
2.
To stop Logging, select “Transfer\Capture Text \Stop”. The datalog is now saved in
the HyperTerminal™ folder as <filename.txt>.
3.
You can use any Text Editor like Wordpad™ or Notepad™ to view logs.
Or use a
program like Excel™ to review and graph the data for analysis.
4.
Pressing <P> Pauses the logging and <S> Starts logging again. Alternatively, the
space bar will toggle the logger on and off.
You can use these features to avoid
logging all your time idling, waiting at stoplights, etc.
DATA LOGGER
Data Logger provides six (6) alternate sets of data, each slightly different from the
Logger data. To access each set, simply type in the set number you want to log (16).
Use the same procedure to capture the data into a text file and the same
keystrokes to Start and Pause the logging. Using the <Shift – 1 to 6> keys will cause
the UTEC to output a comma delimited log. If these are saved to a file with a .csv
extension they can be opened directly by Excel™.

Logger #6 has been specifically setup to help with speed density tuning
1. RPM: Engine speed of the car
2. MAP PSI: Manifold Pressure
3. MAF: Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage
4. TPS: Throttle position

7. Car AFR: AFR reading from the car’s front o2 sensor
8. Car Inj#1: The current injection time of the injectors. If there is no asterisk, then
the injection time is from the factory ECU. If an asterisk appears after the
number, then the injectors are under the control of the Open Loop Fuel algorithm
and the injection time is calculated by the UTEC.
9. Calc VE%: The calculated VE based on the MAF, MAP, RPM, Intake Air Temp and
Engine Capacity. This is only valid while the MAF is reading accurately
within its operating range
10. MAP VE: the current VE value used to calculate injector on-time.
11. MAF Inj MS: the injector on time that the MAF algorithm calculates.
12. Target AFR: The AFR target in the background AFR map currently being used.

Note:
It is recognized that the Speed Density algorithm requires that the air temperature
reading be at the intake manifold rather than at the intake to the MAF which is where
the factory Subaru intake temperature sensor is located. Because there is no sensor
at the intake manifold, the air intake temperature is used to approximate the air
temp in the intake manifold. Any error introduced by this assumption can be reduced
by further tuning of the Air Temp corrections in the parameters

UPGRADING THE UTEC SOFTWARE VERSION
The initial software release of the UTEC was Version 2.2. This version was
superseded by version 2.5b which was released in December 2002.

Your current software version is displayed at the top right hand
portion of the UTEC Home Menu. Periodically, we will release new software versions
for the UTEC.
These upgrades could be to add new features or functionality or to
eliminate any known software bugs.
The latest software revision will be available for download from our internet site at

4.
Ensure that the UTEC is powered off.
NOTE: The ECU will stay on for an extended period of time after the car ignition switch
has been moved to the “off” position. There is a red LED on the UTEC board that will shut
down after the power relay has actually shut down. Please make sure this LED is off
before going to the next step.
5.
Locate the wire cover on the UTEC. This is a flat plate near the main connectors that is secured
by three screws.

Remove the wire cover by undoing the three (3) button screws.

Your UTEC will either have a set of two toggle switches or an 8 position DIPSWITCH. If you
have 2 toggle switches you’ll need to move the “Flash” switch to the “A” position (towards
the serial port). If you have the 8 position DIPSWITCH (Set of 8 switches) set them to the
following positions:

2: UP
3: UP
4: DOWN
5: DOWN
6: DOWN
7: UP
8: UP
NOTE: Down is closest to the main connector where the factory harness plugs into the UTEC.
NOTE: If you do not set the dipswitches correctly you may get a CEL which will need to be

m16c_flash_v105.exe program at: http://www.turboxs.com/utectuning.htm. It is recommended to
save this file to your desktop for easy access.

Click on “Select File” and locate the new program <wrxutec_50.mot> that was saved in step #8
above. Please note that these pictures were taken during the UTEC 2.5 upgrade procedure; on
your screen you MUST select the new wrxutec_50.mot file. Otherwise, the process is exactly the

Turn the car ‘OFF’. Please note that sometimes the ECU will stay on for an extended period
of time after the car ignition switch has been moved to the ‘OFF’ position. There is a red
LED on the UTEC board that will shut down after the power relay has actually shut down.
Please make sure this LED is off before going to the next step.

Set the Flash toggle switch back to the ‘B’ position (closest to the main connector) or the
DIPSWITCH (set of 8 switches) back to OPERATION mode:

REPROGRAMMING TROUBLESHOOTING
1.
Most programming errors are due to the following:
A. The serial cable being loose or defective. Replace or secure cable.
B. Another program, such as Hyperterminal™, HotSync, M16 Flash or other communication
program is using the serial port. Close all other programs before trying to reprogram your
UTEC.
C. The “Flash” toggle switch has not been returned to the ‘B’ position or Dipswitch 1 has not
been switched to the DOWN position prior to power up. Shut car off, reset dipswitch, restart
reprogramming.
2.
If the program fails to load the program, try reducing the maximum baud rate on the serial flash
loader program.
3.
If the new program does not run the car, check that the “Flash” toggle switch has been returned
to the ‘B’ position or that Dipswitch 1 is back in the UP position and that power to the UTEC has
been turned OFF before restarting (red LED on UTEC will turn off when power to the UTEC is
turned off).
4.
If an immediate check engine light (CEL) occurs, reload the program and make sure that
Dipswitch 7 was placed in the UP position during reprogramming.

Appendix A: TPS and MAP Calibration
TPS Calibration
1.
To calibrate the TPS you need a UTEC and a PC.
2.
Turn ON the ignition but do not start the car. With no pressure on the throttle pedal
record the TPS value (T0) under logger #4.
3.
With the throttle pedal fully depressed record the TPS value (T1) under logger #4.
4.
Min TPS = T0 / 51
5.
Max TPS = T1 / 51
Note that these numbers are rounded off to one decimal place.
MAP Calibration
1.
To calibrate the MAP sensor you need an accurate boost/vacuum gauge (note that 0
psi is atmospheric pressure), a UTEC and a PC.
2.
Turn ON the ignition but do not start the car. Record the pressure reading (P0) in
psi on the gauge and the MAP value (M0) under logger #4.
3.
Start the car.
4.
As an alternative measurement for P0. Place the engine under vacuum and record
the pressure reading (P0) in psi on the gauge and the MAP value (M0) under logger
#4.
5.
Place the engine under boost and record the pressure reading (P1) in psi on the
gauge and the MAP value (M1) under logger #4. Try to find a stable reading for this
in boost.
6.
Ideally the two measurement points should be as far apart as possible.

Appendix E: Launch control wiring diagram/notes
WARNING:
The use of Launch Control WILL subject your engine, clutch, gearbox, drivetrain, turbocharger,
O2 sensors, catalytic converters and exhaust system to abnormal loads and possible damage.
The use of ignition cut launch control WILL also subject your valvetrain to abnormal loads and
possible damage. The use of ignition cut launch control will also cause backfiring and unburnt
fuel to be passed through your engine and catalytic converters.
The UTEC Launch Control MUST NOT BE wired in parallel with the factory cruise control. This
WILL cause damage to your car.
The cruise control clutch safety feature WILL NO LONGER WORK if you install Launch Control.
Do not use the Remote Switch and Clutch Switch with software version 2.5b. This WILL cause
the incorrect map to be selected.
Launch Control should only be used OFF ROAD.
Launch Control
The UTEC Launch Control allows the selection of a secondary rev limit and the choice of either a
fuel cut or ignition cut rev limiter. These options can be found in the User Constants.
Launch Control can also deactivate the spare solenoid when the clutch switch is opened by
depressing the clutch switch. This option can be found in the User Constants. This option will
override the Spare Solenoid OFF Time Delay parameter.
The UTEC Launch Control utilises the cruise control clutch switch as its activation. The cruise
control clutch switch is a safety switch which will disable the cruise control when the clutch
pedal is depressed.
The cruise control clutch switch is closed when the clutch pedal is up.

Launch Control Override Options
Launch Control can be disabled using the User Constants or, if required, an override switch can
be wired into the car. The following diagram shows how this could be done;

To disable Launch Control close the override switch.
Remote Switch Modification
The Remote Switch can also be modified such that switch position 8 and 9 would disable Launch
Control. With the Remote Switch in position 8 the Clutch Switch would be bypassed and a
stock map would be selected. With the Remote Switch in position 9 the Clutch Switch would be
bypassed and map 1 would be selected.

Carefully remove the heatshrink from the Remote Switch (note that this has
adhesive on it).
Clean the area.
Using a 22AWG wire link join the pad marked ‘8’ to the pad on which the white wire
is soldered to. This is shown in the following pictures.
Reapply adhesive lined heatshrink over this area (note that the heatshrink provides
insulation and strain relief).

Notes on Using Launch Control:
1. You will need to purchase a UTEC Remote Switch with clutch switch flying lead in
order to use launch control. Please connect the flying leads to the cruise control
clutch switch as shown in the figures above.
2. You will need to use the provided jumper link to connect the terminals on the stock
clutch switch connector if you wish to continue to use your cruise control.
3. Do not, under any circumstances, tap the UTEC clutch switch wires into the clutch
switch with the stock clutch wires still connected. Trust us, this will result in all sorts
of electrical gremlins that may well ensure your car never runs correctly again. If
you fail to heed this warning, you may as well douse your car in race gas and light it
off, because it’s as good as dead. You think we are kidding? TurboXS has no sense of
humour. You have been warned.
4. Launch Control works by imposing a secondary, lower, rev-limit at a desired launch
RPM. This lets the user keep the car at wide open throttle without hitting the rev
limit and build boost pressure prior to launching the car.
5. The secondary rev-limit also permits flat foot shifting (or wide open throttle shifts) as
the secondary rev-limit controls engine speed.

6. Boost pressures of 7+Psi are completely normal when launch control is engages.
Please understand that you are launching at or very close to full torque
when under boost and as such it is very likely that you will damage your
transmission, motor, or other drive line components while using launch
control and flat shift.
7. Try to tune the launch control RPM setting so as to avoid excessive wheel spin. A
little wheel spin is a very good thing, but excessive wheel spin can hurt your ¼ mile
times.
8. Always select ignition cut based launch control when you are using N2o. If
you fail to select ignition cut, the N2o/fuel mixture you are injecting into
your motor will ignite and can cause very serious damage to your engine.
9. TurboXS is strongly against street racing! As tempted as you may be, please refrain
from showing off your new UTEC feature on the street.
10. The use of launch control in ignition mode WILL subject your catalytic
converter to an overly rich mixture Damage to these components can occur.
Appendix F: Open Loop Fuel Control
It is important to note that software version 4.0 is the first version of UTEC software that has
the UTEC actually making fuelling decisions in a stand-alone fashion. It is important for the end
user to understand some of the basics of how this is implemented. This appendix should serve
as a rough guide.
Warning: Open Loop Fuel Control allows for a higher than stock revlimit. It is highly recommended that you not exceed stock RPM
limits. If you fail to heed this warning it is highly likely that your car
will experience valve train related failure. Further please note that
higher PRM limits place extreme loads on connecting rods. At high
RPMs it is extremely likely that you will break a connecting rond on
the exhaust stroke of the motor. When a connecting rod breaks the
resulting damage is catastrophic.
Warning: Open loop fuel control allows for adjustable scaling of the
injectors. You musth not use this feature in conjunction with a map
tuned for larger injectors from a previous (prior to 4.0) version of
software.
1. Introduced in software version 4.0 is a background fuel table (to which the end
user doesn’t have access) that is based off a similar fuel table in the stock ECU.
2. This Fuel table is used for the 10%-100% load sites in the UTEC.
3. This table uses a combination of MAF volrage and RPM as a load reference
4. Each MLP (map load point) in the background map is filled with a desired AFR.
5. Using the information from the calibration of the MAF sensor and the size of the
injectors the UTEC determines the proper amount of fuel to add to achieve the
desired AFR.
6. For the moment the end user is tuning only the MAF voltages and the injector
size used in the calculation. Further revisions of the UTEC may give great control,

but for now this is the easiest way to transition our customer base to standalone
fuelling.
FAQ Section
1. What should I do with the ABC?
The ABC must be installed in order for the UTEC boost control system to work as designed. If
you do not intend to use the UTEC’s boost control system, you do not need to install the ABC.
2. I connected my laptop to the UTEC but nothing comes up on HyperTerminal.
What should I do?
There are three common causes for the UTEC to experience communication problems;
a. incorrect port settings
i. Check your settings against those listed earlier in the manual
ii. Ensure that you are using the correct Com port. If your serial cable is on
port #2 you’ll have to change the settings to reflect this.
b. another program is open in the background that is using the communications port
i. Hotsync
ii. Activesync
iii. Or any other program that can use the com port
c. Serial port problems.
i. try another serial cable
ii. try another laptop
3. My boost is too high or too low what should I do?
i. Adjust the ABC
ii. Adjust the UTEC boost map
4. My boost does not seem to respond to any of my adjustments what should I do?
iii. Check your installation
iv. Make sure the factory restrictor is still in the line coming off the
compressor nipple of the Turbo
5. What factory restrictor? What does it do and why do I need it?
v. In the factory boost line attached to the compressor side of the turbo
there is a small brass or plastic restrictor.
vi. The restrictor must be in place because it reduces the volume of air the
factory boost control solenoid must flow to create the proper pressure
drop at the waste gate actuator.
vii. If the restrictor is not installed, you’ll have a hard time building boost
pressures over 10psi.
6. Is my factory boost control solenoid working?
viii. The easiest way to tell is to set your boost map to open loop;
ix. Once in open loop set the boost map in the 0-20% range up to around
1500rpms to 50%. Once this is done save the map and start your car.
x. You should now be able to listen under the hood. If the boost control
solenoid is clicking it is working. Sometimes when it’s jammed or clogged
letting this clic k for a few minutes will clear it out.
7. I have a miss at high RPMs. Is this bad?
xi. Yes
xii. You should check the condition of your spark plugs for;
1. proper gap
2. worn electrodes

9. How do I tune the closed loop boost controller?
xvi. Open your ABC 2 turns
xvii. Set the boost control parameter (special constants) to closed loop
xviii. Block fill the boost map to 225
xix. Add values of about 25 to this boost map until you achieve the desired
boost level.
xx. Gain settings typically don’t need to be adjusted unless;
1. you desire to have faster spool (lower your gain)
2. you are having boost spike issues (raise your gain)
xxi. As with all tuning, make small changes and understand what you are
changing.
10. Why is my MAP value different than my boost gauge?
xxii. MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure. 14.7Psi is typically considered normal
atmospheric conditions; if you add 14.7 psi to this you have 29.4psi
absolute pressure in your manifold. The UTEC will display this as 14.7psi
absolute. If your atmospheric condition is lower than standard pressure
this will show up in the absolute reading
xxiii. Boost gauges typically only show pressure above ambient. This accounts
for the difference between the 2 readings.
11. My CEL is flashing what should I do?
xxiv. The flashing CEL typically represents detonation.
xxv. You should user your logger #1 to determine at what RPM and what load
point you are having detonation problems
xxvi. Once you determine where you are having issues, you’ll need to remove
timing or add fuel to eliminate the detonation.
xxvii. Remember to make small changes, and know what and why you are
making that change.
12. The spare solenoid will not turn on. What should I do?
xxviii. Check the wiring against the provided diagram
xxix. The logic in the controller is “AND” logic, ensure that all conditions are
being met.
xxx. Make sure that the “off” settings are not being met.
13. Is stage 1 map in map position 1? Stage two in map 2? Etc...
xxxi. Typically if you ordered a stage1 map this will be in map position one.
xxxii. We do not fill the rest of the maps with our “staged” maps
xxxiii. The checklist that is provided with the UTEC will tell you which map is
installed and to which position it is installed.
14. Why are TurboXS maps so rich?
xxxiv. For added safety our base-maps (especially stage4+) are left a bit rich.
xxxv. This gives you the chance to fine tune the base-maps to your
modifications.
xxxvi. When the dashboard, or the logger, reports “rich” it simply means that the
car is running at an air/fuel ratio below where the O2 sensor can report
accurately. The sensor is only accurate to about 12:1 AF. We tune most of
our off the shelf kits to around 10.5-10.7:1. If you see anything other
than “RICH” in the logger under WOT and full boost, you are too lean.
15. Will this void my warranty?
xxxvii. Yes! If you alter your engine management parameters from the factory
ECU Subaru will, and rightly so, void your power train warranty.

xxxviii. No! They can’t refuse to cover anything that is un-related to the changes
you’ve made. If your AC system fails, they must cover it no matter how
many additional power modifications you’ve made unless they can prove
that your modifications are the direct cause of the failure.
16. Will launch control hurt my car?
xxxix. If you have to ask, you’re better off not using it.
xl. Launch control will subject your entire drive train to higher than normal
loads
xli. Launch control can destroy catalytic converters.
