MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Because of the many generous donations from you, our

communication.

We celebrate the implementation of
the facility portion of the Tradition of
Excellence, A Future of Distinction capital
campaign.
We celebrate the installation of new
Philippine exhibits in the Shrine, a
portion of the multi-year Alumni
Project.
We continue to celebrate, acknowledge and communicate the value of
a Sacred Heart education.
We also look forward with eager anticipation to the journey before us.
•

We anticipate focusing Campaign
expenditures on our academic
program and the growth of our
endowment.
We anticipate beginning the next
phases of the Alumni Museum Project.
We look forward to the next two
years as we finalize plans for our
anniversary celebration of 200 years
of Sacred Heart education in America, begun
on these holy grounds
in 1818.
Our faculty and staff
remain committed to
creating an atmosphere
in which our children
receive the academic, emotional, social and
spiritual support they need to become the
kind of courageous and confident Children
of the Sacred Heart who will make St.
Madeleine Sophie and St. Philippine
Duchesne proud. That is our earnest desire
and the goal of all our efforts!
With deep gratitude to all our donors
who help to make this happen,
Maureen Glavin, rscj
Head of School
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Since my first association with the Academy of the Sacred Heart, I’ve known it to be a very
special place.
The depth of love for the
school’s mission, its sainted
foundress, its community
and its history is evident in
so many ways.
The work of education so inspiringly begun
by St. Philippine Duchesne nearly two
centuries ago, and faithfully carried out
in ensuing years by her daughters in the
Society of the Sacred Heart, is an important contribution to the work of the
Catholic Church both
in St. Louis and beyond.
Educating the hearts and
minds of young people
to be critical thinkers,
capable leaders, and faithfilled architects of change
is as vitally important
today as it has ever been!
The Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart
Education—an expression of St. Madeleine
Sophie Barat’s philosophy of education—
continue to guide the Board and school
administrators in all deliberations and
decisions. With the Goals and Criteria
before us, we feel the guidance of
Madeleine Sophie, Philippine, Janet Erskine
Stuart and other standout educators in
the Society of the Sacred Heart.
And so, with deep appreciation I thank
you for your continued support and your
commitment to this very special place—
the Academy of the Sacred Heart. May it
ever thrive!
Rev. Seán Charles Martin
Chair, Board of Trustees

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
One element of our religion curriculum is the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, in which our
youngest students nurture their understanding of and relationship with Jesus. Pre-Primary and Primary students regularly visit the Atrium, a learning space in the Primary wing created for Catechists and students to
do their “work.” They enjoy a variety of hands-on activities in this sacred space, just for them. Here, Kayla
Hess prepares the altar.
Shrine Exhibit
Enhancements to the Shrine were completed late last summer as part of a five-year plan undertaken by the
Alumni Association, along with funds from the Society of the Sacred Heart. The two walls adjacent to the
west door of the Shrine feature visual and audio information that tell the story of St. Philippine Duchesne’s
life and legacy. Also featured are signage, better lighting and a log cabin image in the niche that houses
Philippine’s chair and footwarmer; improved lighting and signage around the sarcophagus; and better lighting
of the large banner that hung in St. Peter’s Square the morning of the canonization in 1988.
4
Photographers and Authors
Middle School students were recently invited to choose two of 16 electives to pursue on Wednesday
afternoons. In the course “Photographers and Authors,” Librarian Beth Metcalf works with Sydney
Fredrickson, Berkeley Rebman, and Katie Luetkemeyer to create an alphabet book featuring photos of architectural details on campus. This project speaks to the third criterion of Goal II, “The school program develops aesthetic values and the creative use of the imagination.”
Electives, continued
New elective choices are as varied as Romeo and Juliet, Election 2016, Board Game Design, Body Strength
and Relaxation, Guitar, and Science Olympics. Here, working with Ms. Furay and Mrs. Budny, Jacob Parcel,
Andrew Smith, Sam Schilling, Alex Thro, Bryce McCool and Kenneth Hammell transform themselves into
ambassadors and world leaders in “Model U.N.”
5
Stage Presence
While Sister Munch has retired from full-time teaching, she will continue to direct Sixth Class students in
performances about the lives of St. Philippine Duchesne and St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. Shown here are
performers in November's production of Philippine's life, as told through the lens of the stained glass
windows in Cribbin Hall.
Math Fun
Holidays are always festive celebrations. In the fall Miss Lammert’s Fourth Class students use pumpkins to
measure circumferences, estimate weights, analyze data and create bar charts. When finished, they have
cleaned-out pumpkins, ready to carve at home.
6
Hands On
On Fabulous Fridays the Pre-Primary students learn by doing. In addition to working on a science experiment,
they spend time in the kitchen cooking a dish that starts with the letter they are studying that week. From left
to right, JoJo Gasper, Shreeya Shelar, Giovanni Kuhlmann, Maha Reddy Devrapally and Parker White create
friendship soup with Mrs. Van Voorn.
ASH Moms
We are very grateful for the many ways that Academy parents support school events and initiatives throughout
the year! Current Mothers’ Club officers Erin Grieshaber, Liz Lozano, Megan Kahn Lee ’93 and Aimee Centorbi
have provided countless hours of planning, orchestrating, creativity and manpower for the good of the school.
Each year the Mothers’ Club’s Gently Worn Uniform Sales and Taste of Christmas Boutique benefit the Sister
Anna Mae Marheineke Student Enrichment Fund.
7
annual giving
Gifts to Annual Giving impact the lives of Academy students! Each year the school supplements tuition with monies
from a variety of sources—Annual Giving chief among them. Contributions to the Annual Fund enrich students’ lives
by investing in curricular resources and enhancing programs such as Classroom Connections, international language,
global studies, daily physical education, art and music; support faculty and staff through professional development;
expand educational technology; and ensure quality facilities.
Every gift is valued, no matter the size! Strong participation within our school community increases our chances of
winning grants from foundations and corporations who favor schools with broad support from present families.
Parents
All gifts to Annual Giving are deeply
appreciated. Parents who contributed
the suggested amount of $400 per
student during 2014–2015 are
enrolled in the Très Bien Society and
denoted with a ¶.

alumni giving
With their Alumni Project contributions during 2014–2015, ASH alums lent
their support once again to the “Countdown to Congé” museum projects.
How fitting that graduates of St. Philippine’s first school are helping to share
her inspiring story with visitors by way of enhancements to the Shrine! With
gratitude we acknowledge the following alumni for their support of the

“Academy of the Sacred Heart not only provides an excellent academic program which prepares its students for high
school, but also nurtures its students with a spiritual and
academic support system that propels them into their
future. Cor Jesu Academy finds that the young women
coming from ASH are not only prepared for our curriculum
and academic rigor, but have the background in faith and
community that makes them vital leaders at Cor Jesu.”
