TOP PLACES TO WORK: JOBS
For many, temp work
will be the new normal
W
e know that a lot of jobs have been
lost in this recession — about 8.4 million and counting. The question is:
Will they come back?
Tina Brown recently coined
the phrase the “Gig Economy”
on her blog, the Daily Beast, in
reference to the fact that we are
largely transitioning into temporary — freelance and contract —
work, a change that may, in fact,
become permanent.
Sara Horowitz, founder of the
Freelancers Union, agrees with JEAN
her. “It’s not that traditional jobs CHATZKY
are going to go away completely, Money
but it’s like an archeological dig, Magazine
and this is the new level.” She
adds that the Freelancers membership is up 60 percent in the past year and half.
If their predictions are right, how do we cope? I
know from experience that this is a tough transition, so I rounded up a few tips to help you prepare:
GET THE COVERAGE YOU NEED. Your insurance
needs are now on your shoulders. Horowitz’s Freelancers Union offers group insurance coverage for
members, so that’s an option to look into. If you prefer to go at it yourself, as long as you’re in relatively
good health, you should be able to find an affordable medical plan on ehealthinsurance.com. The
exception? If you live in a state that requires insurers to extend a policy to everyone, regardless of
health status — New York falls under this category,
as does Washington, Vermont, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maine — you’ll automatically get coverage, but it will be pricey. Tone down the cost with
a health savings account, said Drew Tignanelli, a
financial planner in Maryland. These accounts are
linked to a high-deductible insurance plan with a
lower premium; money you save on premiums gets
deposited into the account, and then you can use
that cash to meet your deductible.
As for replacing life and disability policies, a term
life insurance policy is generally inexpensive, and
the disability policies offered by most companies
aren’t comprehensive enough, anyway. Tignanelli
advises purchasing an individual policy that has its
own occupation coverage, which means it will kick
in if you’re unable to perform the job you had before
you became disabled. Disability policies are pricey,
but necessary. You can get a quote for both life and
disability at insure.com.
RETOOL YOUR RETIREMENT. If you had a 401(k) at
work, your best bet in most cases is to roll the cash
you’ve saved into an independent account. Then
think about where you want to stash future contri-
butions because, as a self-employed individual, you
have a wide range of options. If you’re eligible to
make a full contribution to a Roth IRA — if you earn
less than $105,000 as a single filer or $167,000 as a
joint file — that’s a good start because your cash will
grow tax-free. You can contribute up to $5,000 to
that in 2010 ($6,000 if you’re 50 or older). Once you
max that out, you should consider opening an SEP
IRA or a Solo 401(k). Remember, if you were receiving matching dollars from your employer before,
you now need to pick up that slack.
B U D G E T L I K E YO U ’ V E N E V E R B U D G E T E D
BEFORE. Unfortunately, when the money isn’t roll-
ing in regularly — and as a freelancer, sometimes
it doesn’t roll in at all — you need to take a stricter
approach to your finances. That means figuring out
how much you think you’ll make in a year, rounding down a bit to cover your losses, and then dividing that amount by how often you want to pay yourself. (So if you’re used to a check every two weeks,
divide by 26.) When you get paid, that money goes
into a savings account, and then every two weeks,
you transfer your paycheck into your checking
account to cover bills and other expenses. And
make sure you have a healthy emergency fund, at
least nine months’ worth of expenses, in case you
hit a drought.
TAKE YOUR DEDUCTIONS. If you work in a home
office, you can likely write that space off, provided
you use it only for work. You can deduct any medical insurance premiums you paid for yourself, your
spouse or your dependants. And remember that
you’re going to have to pay a 15.3 percent Social
Security tax. “When you’re an employee of someone
else, you pay 7.65 percent, half of the Social Security
tax, out of your paycheck, and your employer pays
the other half. The extra half that a self-employed
person pays is deductible,” Tignanelli said. My suggestion? Work with an accountant the first time you
file after becoming a freelancer. The extra expense
will be worth it.
GET OUT. You likely don’t realize how much the
social interaction of an office adds to your life until
it’s gone, but having somewhere to go every day and
people to talk to can be incredibly motivating. If
you can afford it, you might consider renting office
space — this is called co-working, and the expense
is likely tax-deductible — but if that’s not an option,
at least get out once or twice a day, Horowitz said.
“If you’re not connected to people, you will fail. The
most successful freelancers are the ones who get out
of the house, go to networking events and meet people.” Finding and joining a few professional organizations that host regular events will be good for
your mental health and your business.

L
et’s say you have a job. Congratulations! Now the
goal is to keep it, advance to lofty prominence,
avoid getting canned for wearing a sheer tube
top to the sales meeting. The Deal Divas, the St. Petersburg Times’ team of shopping and fashion masters, sat
down to discuss what constitutes appropriate work
wear in this modern age of blurred lines, flip-flops and
jeans for all occasions.
Casual vs. formal
STEPHANIE: First, identify what
kind of job you have. Are you
working in a bank? Are you in a
real estate office? Are you working in a creative field? Because
the rules are really different.
DALIA: Some people take the
jeans too far. They think it means
jeans and tennis shoes and sweatshirts.
LETITIA: When in doubt for
work, you should wear slacks or
a skirt. Jeans should only be if
you’re supremely comfortable
that you know they’re acceptable in your workplace. In my
workplace, jeans are completely
acceptable.
STEPHANIE: Good, because I’m
wearing them right now.
LETITIA: I tend to reserve them
for Fridays, which is probably
being overly conservative, but
when it comes to dressing for
work, being overly conservative is
generally a good rule of thumb.
NICOLE: So are we saying that
jeans with a T-shirt with heels is
okay?
STEPHANIE: I think you throw a
jacket over that, and you’re good
to go.
Taking risks
NICOLE: Is there a limit of how
stylish and how “out there” your
shoes should be at work? Are
5-inch heels okay?
LETITIA: I had a friend once
who worked at a company where
open-toed shoes were not accept-
able. Everyone knew that. It’s
really a know-thy-workplace
issue. If it belongs on the club
floor, it probably doesn’t belong
in the office.
STEPHANIE: I think it’s good to
take risks with your work outfit. You should throw a little bit
of personal style into your outfit
because it shows that you’re creative, you’re bold, you’re confident and you’re not going to follow along like a sheep.
LETITIA: When it comes to dressing for work, the rule is first do
no harm. You can harm yourself
by dressing in a way that attracts
negative attention. You’re probably not going to harm yourself by
being dull.
NICOLE: It also depends on how
long you’ve been at your workplace. If you are just starting out
at a company, you need to toe the
line. Err on the side of caution. But
after some tenure and confidence
and trust, that may dictate when
you can start taking chances.
For the men
STEPHANIE: Guys have problems
with pant length. I see a lot of
pants that are about 3 inches off
the ground. You see their socks
and the cuff is kind of wrinkly
because it’s been crammed in
some drawer. Guys could go a
long way just to spruce up a
little bit.
LETITIA: If you just pick it up
a tiny bit, like maybe pairing a
white checked shirt with an interesting, popping tie, suddenly you

are just sharp.
NICOLE: I recently helped my
husband buy a few new pieces,
and two things he bought that
instantly made his wardrobe better were a zip-up cardigan and a
V-neck cardigan.
DALIA: I like that. It’s the Justin
Timberlake kind of look.
NICOLE: It’s pulled together, but
it’s young, and I think a lot of
guys are afraid of looking old and
stuffy at work, and they look too
casual.
DALIA: Some of their clothes are
just too baggy. Their suits are too
loose, and they could just fit a little better. You don’t have to go too
tight. There’s a happy medium.
STEPHANIE: When your pockets start to get that flare, the little
butterfly wings on the side, your
pants are too tight, guys.
Back to basics
LETITIA: There are some sharplooking basics that if you don’t
have in your wardrobe, you
should. It’s cliche kind of stuff.
The little black dress, a black pencil skirt, some sharp heels.
NICOLE: A white button-up shirt.
LETITIA: It’s, “Do I have a black
dress that looks really good on me
and has a certain level of quality?”
That’s work clothes.
STEPHANIE: That’s the kind of
stuff you can take outside to a
cocktail party, your work black
dress with a little higher heel and
your hair done differently, and
transition it so you’re not just funneling money into your soul-suck
job. You’re building a wardrobe.

Want a job in one of the Times’
Top 60 workplaces? You’re in
luck, as long as you have the right
skills. Many of them indicated in
the survey that they plan to add
to their work forces in the next
year.
Health care companies lead
the way. Not surprising, given
that it’s one of the only industries
in Florida that has consistently
added jobs throughout the Great
Recession. But companies in
some of the hardest-hit sectors —
real estate and hospitality — also
plan on hiring.
As weaker competitors fall
away, top companies often need
more workers to meet increased
demand. Others have found ways
to capitalize on the down economy, expanding quickly to capture market share before competitors can catch back up.
Some organizations, like the
Hillsborough County Aviation
Authority and St. Mary’s Episcopal Day School, said they
will pick up one or two extra
employees. A few of the larger
companies expect to add hundreds.

Government jobs leave
these employees smiling

ld jokes aside, sometimes
the government really is
here to help.
Just ask those who work for
two public service entities and
who laud their work environment and the benefits that come
with the job.
The Attorney General’s Child
Support Enforcement Bureau
and another quasi-governmental agency — the Hillsborough
County Aviation Authority —
both notched spots among the
top workplaces in the Tampa Bay
area.
The child support office, with
64 bay area employees, juggles
700 court hearings per week
as it works on cases to establish and enforce child support
orders. The aviation authority,
with 584 local employees, runs
Tampa International, Peter O.
Knight, Plant City and Tampa

Both organizations are big on
employee benefits. At the child
support enforcement office,
employees annually receive 10
paid holidays, 104 hours of paid
leave and up to 104 hours of paid
sick leave, which helps counter the burnout in what can be
a particularly stressful part of
the legal arena. Workers at the
aviation authority are allowed
to lump their vacation and sick
leave time together under a UniLeave program. Those with lit-
tle or no need for sick time can
convert those hours to vacation
leave.
The high workplace marks
aren’t a surprise, based on a survey last year by the Partnership
for Public Service and brand
consultant Universum USA.
In the survey of 32,000 undergraduates, the choice of government/public service was the
most popular career option out
of 46 industries.
Perceptions of bureaucracy
and red tape aside, respondents
were drawn to the job security
and stability that government
work offers, not to mention
“serving the greater good,” the
survey said.
“Government offers the main
qualities undergraduates seek,”
the report concluded. “A healthy
work/life balance is undergraduates’ No. 1 career goal, with 66
percent of students citing this as
a priority.”

The Times Top 60 is full of companies that have maintained
employee morale, productivity and satisfaction during these recent

the downturn, making it easier to keep workers happy. But plenty of
others on the list have done it despite pay cuts, layoffs and struggling

“It’s like a family. From Terri Osteen, the executive director, on down to the
housekeeper, everyone is treated the same. There’s no one here with an attitude.
I’ve been nursing 37 years, and I’ve seen a lot of that stuff.
“They take such pride in taking care of the residents. The standards are
extremely high. … If you want to work here and are not meticulous about
resident care, you have to go somewhere else. They make sure that (the residents’) full preferences are allowed to them whenever they want something.
I’ve never worked in a facility where a resident said, ‘I don’t want that for lunch.
I want steak.’ And they can have that choice. It’s unbelievable.”

to these leaders’ success

JAMES (on the value of being prepared for
the next business crisis): You will remember
the minute the alarm goes off and people
will rally around the flag and get to work.
You can’t sit back and say, “What do we do
now, coach?” Someone has to make decisions. That is what leadership is all about.
AUER: Success of an organization has a lot
more to do with the people than a leader. A
leader needs to get the right people and create the right culture. And he needs to try
to make sure people understand what we
believe will lead to success in the company
and how they can share in that success.
SHEVLIN: The thing I fear most is complacency. If you enter a difficult time with complacency, you are going to fail. Stopping complacency is a core focus of our leadership team.
Your toughest time as a leader?
JAMES: We were in the center of the recent
economic firestorms. A lot of those (Wall
Street) companies disappeared in our industry. I had a great benefit. After business school,
I got to live through the recession of 1973 and
1974 when three business degrees would not
have given me the same experience.
We built a lot of systems then in risk management, so we already knew how to turn the
switch and employ practices. In the recent
financial crisis, we started watching our cash
on a daily basis. Newer people would not
know what to do because they’d never experienced anything like these events.
At other companies, professional managers thought they were too good and got
into trouble. They did not think they were
putting their company at risk, but they did.
They did not pay attention to the lessons of
the ’73-’74 recession when my father (Robert James, a co-founder of Raymond James)
and I could not pay ourselves a salary. I even
had to sell my coin collection.
AUER: It was during 2004 and 2005 with all
those hurricanes (including Charley, Frances,
Ivan and Jeanne). We had 5½ years of property claims in six weeks. I was scared to death,
but the employees got it done. It turned out to
be a great time of teamwork and very reinforcing. But it was quite frightening at the time.
We closed the claims quicker, with fewer complaints, and remained profitable.
SHEVLIN: It’s emotional to let people go
who were there at the beginning of the business but no longer fit in the organization.
A lady who first ran accounting is
no longer the right person to run it at a
$60 million company. We can do a disservice to people trying to fit a round person
in a square hole.

You have all just led companies through
one of the worst recessions in our lifetimes. Are there lessons to be learned
and shared with your employees?
JAMES: I want to remind our people. I do
not want them to think this was a bump in
the road. Our business plan has to contemplate we are in a tough time, and we will be
lucky to survive for reasons outside our control. If you do not have that in your memory
bank, you do not do the types of planning
you would do otherwise. And that is why you
need all those systems.
AUER: We insure homes. And when what you
insure is going down in value, foreclosures
are at a record rate and people owe more
than a house is worth, it is a difficult environment. We have to do everything better than
our competitors. As a smaller company, we
can have a better attitude, do things quicker,
be more innovative.
But on the negative, we do not have the
staying power of a State Farm or Allstate. We
had good profits last year — knock on wood.
Everyone understands. Let’s do the work
without hiring more people and let’s thank
the agents (who refer insurance clients to ASI)
for their business. So far, it is working. It is not
doing anything different but re-emphasizing
what led to our success.
SHEVLIN: We felt we need to make decisions
quicker, whether it is adding people or letting people go. We work on that daily rather
than wait for the end of the quarter to make
decisions out of fear of the overall (economic)
environment. Early last year I made sure
I was in front of my employees every day,
whether it was to fix a problem, a strategy, a
customer or policy issue. It’s something we
do every day, and we will not deviate from it.

AUER: Most companies do not excel. They go
to work from 8 to 5 and do not take pride being
on a winning team. Kids are on sports teams
and work out every day with no thought of
being paid. Why? The joy of winning.
If a company is winning, employees should
understand how important it is to share
that pride. That’s why it bothers me sometimes when it seems I get the credit. The best
thing I did was hire them, and I want them to
understand how important that is.
SHEVLIN: I would go back and focus on
building other leaders in your organization.
BARRY SHEVLIN: I am a member
of the YPO (Young Presidents
Organization), which has been very
helpful to learn about leadership
and solving problems. And there
is a group of area tech CEOs that
get together that includes Tom
Wallace of Red Vector and Tony
DiBenedetto of Tribridge.

Top CEOs say it’s all in team cultivation.

W
hat makes a great business leader? The employees of
three local companies think they know.
They heaped praise on their CEOs, so much so that
they led all the companies in the Times survey of workplaces when it comes to leadership. They are able to create a culture
that drives their work force to succeed. It’s part motivation, part communication, with a heavy dose of bedrock values.
“He praises his employees continuously,” the employees said.
“Is approachable, loyal and genuinely cares about his employees.”
“Uses common sense and tries to do the right thing.”
How do the leaders pull it off ? The Times went to the winners, sitting
down with Tom James of the regional investment firm Raymond James
Financial of St. Petersburg; John Auer of the insurance firm American Strategic Insurance of St. Petersburg; and Barry Shevlin of the telecommunications/IT equipment reseller Vology Data Systems, the new
name as of this month of Network Liquidators in Oldsmar.
James, 67, ranks among the area’s best-known, longest-lasting business captains. Auer, 55, wins survey kudos for staying in close touch
with employees. And Shevlin, 39, tops survey feedback as an impressive motivator — a key credential running a sales-driven business.
The hour-plus exchange held in the Raymond James boardroom was
serious, but at times funny, a bit combative and self-deprecating. It
touched on topics ranging from the importance of positive corporate culture and communicating a company’s mission to recalling the benefit of
mentors. And, of course, possessing the grit and discipline to make swift,
tough decisions in difficult economic times.

you need and cares about your well-being?
Customers who appreciate your efforts?
Maybe a little fun?
Teachers at St. Mary’s Episcopal Day
School in Tampa run down the list with a
smile: check, check, check and check.
“When I got my first paycheck, I almost saw
it as a perk,” said Emily Kirkwood, 25, a fifthgrade teacher and 1999 alumna of the school.
“A lot of kids my age hate their job sitting in a
cubicle. I don’t feel like I’m coming to work.”
Many of the teachers contrast St. Mary’s
with their experience in public schools. Students arrive in uniform each day, ready and
eager to learn. They don’t struggle with distractions such as disciplinary problems.
“The worst behavior I see is when a kid loses
his belt,” said Janeen Henson, who teaches
seventh and eighth grades. “You spend your
entire day teaching. It’s like a fantasy. These
kids want to learn.”
St. Mary’s doesn’t serve the wide spectrum of kids that public schools typically do.
Annual tuition is $10,775. The school accepts
a little more than half of applicants, using criteria such as ‘‘likelihood of success in a challenging academic environment” and “appropriate social and emotional development.”
Like other private schools, St. Mary’s isn’t
required to give the Florida Comprehensive
Assessment Test. Teachers prefer not to feel
like they’re teaching to a standardized test.
They also aren’t shackled to a rigid curriculum handed down by some school board.
“We’re allowed to teach — and teach our
way,” said Garhett Wagers, a division head
and fifth-grade teacher. “There’s a sense of
trust. You’re trained as a professional, and
they let you do it.”
Starting pay is less than at a public school,
but comes close after several years, says headmaster Scott Laird. Teachers work under oneyear contracts and can’t earn tenure.
FLO ROBERTS, 68, has been a second-grade teacher at St. Mary’s
Episcopal Day School for seven years.

“I never want for anything. I love the spirit of this school. They put your family
first. My husband had (a medical problem) in the middle of the night. I called
in that I wasn’t going to be there — no problem. I came around 12:30. It was
just as I expected. They covered my classes, left plans for each of my classes.”
Second-grade teacher Flo Roberts said
that’s a plus.
“In public school, when someone gets tenured, it’s very difficult to move them,” said
Roberts, who spent 40 years in public schools
before coming to St. Mary’s. “A public school
doesn’t have the ability to clean up its act.”
Teachers and administrators work
together during summer planning sessions. They update the faculty and student
handbooks and tweak policies, such as how
strictly to police certain uniform rules.
“We’re heard,” said third-grade teacher
Diana Roverts. “I’m not afraid to talk to
them, and they listen.”

Camden Property Trust
Buys and develops land, builds
apartments and manages apartment communities. Notable: The
mid-’80s oil bust in Houston left the fledgling
company with a condo complex without a
single buyer. Its founders turned it into rentals
instead, cementing a future in the apartment
business.

2001 with classrooms twice the size of those
in the original school. The 430 students enjoy
two science labs and two computer labs.
Teachers receive $100 at the start of the
school year to decorate their rooms. Henson,
the seventh- and eighth-grade teacher, used to
make trips to Kinko’s to buy copier paper out of
her own pocket for her public school classes.
“We want for nothing,” she said. “There’s
always a (copy) machine working. If not, the
repairman is there in 10 minutes.”
The parents association asks teachers each
year to submit requests for new equipment.
“Anything we can use to benefit education
of the children,” said pre-K teacher Adrienne
Brightwell.
Bay Area Legal
Services
A nonprofit public interest law firm
servicing Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties. Its 103
employees assist qualified residents in matters
of family law, employment, housing and public
benefits. Notable: Seventy-four percent of its
clients are women and children.

Last year, her class got new digital cameras.
She took photos at the school’s open house
and on field trips to share with parents online.
Employees also enjoy benefits that compare favorably with big companies’: an initial 5 percent match on retirement fund contributions, rising to 8 percent after 15 years,
and 90 percent of health insurance premiums paid by the school.
St. Mary’s also pays 90 percent of tuition
and books for teachers pursuing post-graduate degrees in their field of expertise.
Henson spoke emotionally about the
intangibles at St. Mary’s. She was new to
the school when her young son had a bowel
obstruction that required a monthlong stay
at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
The school told Henson not to worry after
she burned through all her sick days. Each
day, two people from St. Mary’s came to the
hospital with lunch. She never lost a penny
of pay, and teachers covered all her classes.
Her son died from the illness a year ago
at age 17. St. Mary’s and staffers handled
all the arrangements for his funeral and
reception at the church next door. They
closed the school on the day of the service.
It’s the type of personal touch that employees consistently say makes for a top workplace.
The school also matches new teachers
with veterans to help them navigate the
first year. Not just to learn the ins and outs
of the classroom, but also softer details
like what to wear to faculty parties.
And the fun part?
A few years ago, headmaster Laird and a
few assistants made secret arrangements for a
Christmas treat. An announcement came over
the loud speakers for everyone to leave their
classrooms and line up outside in five minutes.
Buses pulled up and whisked students
and staff to WestShore Plaza theaters for a
showing of Polar Express.
The surprise wore off after a couple of
years. So Laird brought a Christmas video
and a couple of bottles of wine to an afterschool staff meeting.
“The faculty needed a little lift,” he said.

business rife with forced mergers and outright business failures, Century 21 Beggins Enterprises has held up its end from
its base in Apollo Beach.
The same is true of Realtec
Group Inc., the realty company
with more than 100 agents headquartered in Palm Harbor.
Over in Clearwater, National
Title Network Inc. continues to
operate with 50-plus employees.
If there’s anything that seems
to unite those three companies,
it’s a never-say-die sense of fraternity.
Craig Beggins, owner of Beggins Enterprises, holds daily
marketing meetings to assess
the state of real estate. Every
day, agents get encouraging and
instructional e-mails, including
a “hot sheet” that alerts them to
the company’s sales tally.
“Our mantra is ‘We’re going
to show you how to sell more
houses,’ ” Beggins said.
For Camden Property Trust,
a Houston-based company that
operates 12 apartment complexes in Tampa Bay, satisfaction
starts at the top.
Even though they live and
work in Texas, owners Ric Campo
and Keith Oden make it a point
to attend annual Ace Awards ceremonies for high-flying employees in Tampa. Campo showed up
at the recent ceremony wearing
a maintenance shirt to show solidarity with his staffers.
“They really help pump everyone up,” said Brooke Middleton,
Camden’s regional marketing
director. “They could never do
that Undercover Boss TV show,
because we know them too well.”
The Beck Group, a Dallasbased construction company,
is a two-time winner of Fortune
Magazine’s 100 Best Places to
Work survey. The third-generation family-run company had
to cut its local workforce but
has avoided a deeper incision,
thanks to the relative strength of
the Texas market. Beck retained
bonuses for employees last year
and kept up contributions to
401(k) retirement plans.
“They offer a 3 percent match.
They’ve never changed that,” said
Tampa office manager Sharon
Frank, a 25-year veteran of Beck
who’s working through her third
real estate downturn.
Most Florida economists predict that 2010 will be the last year
of a five-year real estate slump.
Here’s hoping for even higher
satisfaction in 2011.

market, with very, very small margins.
Keeping expenses in check is key.
Once a month on Friday, the company
comes in early for a standup meeting.
For each department that hits its goals,
every ASI employee leaves with $40.
If everyone’s on the ball, it adds up to
a tidy cash bonus of $240. Many of the
goals are customer-focused: Did claims
reps return all calls the same day?
Rewarding everyone for individual
successes reinforces good-natured collaboration, employees say.
No one resents pitching in when it
boosts the bottom line, in cash rewards
and in year-end profits. (And no one
wants to fail when it keeps friends from
earning a bonus.)
Michael Sanchez, a flood claims manager who joined the company the day
Hurricane Charley hit, says colleagues
share a vested interest in one another.
“We’re all trying to help each other —
that common goal,” he says.

Auer builds that goodwill for a precise reason: He wants his employees to
treat independent agents and policy-
holders the same way.
Insurance is a people business, he
says. It’s a relationship business.

The company mails smoke alarm
batteries to its policyholders; it sends
handwritten notes to agents on special
occasions. For an agency council meeting at its St. Petersburg headquarters
for agents in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, Arizona and
Colorado, every department picked a
state theme and hammed it up.
Darcie Toteva and Janice George,
in finance, picked Starke for their
Florida theme and turned the department into a prison, with hanging
crepe paper bars. A fake electric chair,
they agree, was over the top. But they
had a reputation to live up to. After
all, finance had won the Halloween
theme contest three years in a row.
The company goodwill helps in
another way. When long hours hit,
there’s little complaining. This time of
year, Toteva and George are slammed.
Year-end statements. Yellow books
for every state. It means long hours,
weekends.
“We work hard, but we balance it,”
LORRAINE HUGHES, 63, is a customer service representative at American Strategic Insurance, where she
has worked for six years.
“I’ve never worked for a company where the management group was so caring. They care about the welfare
of the employees. The first deal is to make money, then they make sure their employees are taken care of. And
they do a good job with that. We get a monthly bonus if we meet our goals. I think that’s just awesome. No. 1,
we’re paid to do our job. To be rewarded for doing your job is awesome. They’re just good to us, period.”
Toteva said. “They let us do fun stuff.”

This is what Toteva and George
remember about 2004. Toteva had
just joined the company; George had
been there a year and a half. Hurricane Charley was the company’s
chance for a strong first impression
with policyholders.
“It was very important that we
answered the phone, and boy, did
we,” Toteva says. She’s an accounts
payable manager, but everyone did
everything. “It really did merge all
the departments together.”
Toteva cried with customers who
shared devastating stories. Homes battered, pets missing.
Auer gave pep talks and brought in
masseuses.
“They took care of us,” George said.

Tough test forged bonds
Thanks to Hurricane Charley, American Strategic Insurance feels like it’s a family.

T. PETERSBURG — American Strategic Insurance Corp. was a scrappy
startup in flood-prone Snell Isle
when Hurricane Charley hit.
Suddenly, everyone but the CEO was
taking claims calls, in conference rooms
and in closets. Then came Frances, Ivan
and Jeanne.
While his 70 employees worked 12-hour
days, John Auer turned himself into head
caretaker, caterer and cheerleader. He
baked breakfast casseroles (sausage and
vegetarian), delivered lunches to desks
and offered to pay for laundry service.
Auer needed spirited employees to keep
call wait times low and service high —
even as some waded through knee-deep
water to get to work.
They remember the 2004 storm season
as the crucible that formed the ASI family.

Before ASI stood for “American Strategic Insurance,” it represented three pieces
of Auer’s vision for his new company: Attitude. Speed. Innovation.
The words are carved around an ASI
logo just off the elevator in the company’s post-Charley offices in Baypoint Commerce Center. They’re repeated by employees around the building. “Attitude” trumps
them all.
“It’s the people that make the difference,”
Auer says. “We have happy employees.”
In the early days, ASI hired friends and
family, especially former colleagues with
strong reputations. Now that the company
has more than 160 employees with plans
to add 20 more this year, it doesn’t leave
attitude to word-of-mouth. It tests for it.

It’s Monday after lunch, and Leslie
Knapp, 31, is effervescing in her cubicle.
She’s an agent with ASI’s internal agency,
Sunshine Security Insurance.
“I tell people all the time about the company,” she says. “I really love getting up and
going to work. I love everyone I work with.”
She interviewed for a job at ASI two
years ago because her grandmother was

The survey breaks
down workplaces into
three sizes based on the
number of locally based
employees — large, 500
or more employees;
midsize, 150-499; and
small, 50-149.
Why? Because,

W
hat matters most to
employees?
To find out, the
Workplace Dynamics survey
asked thousands of Tampa Bay
area employees a series of questions then ranked them according to importance.
At the very top was the direction in which a business was
headed. A high percentage of
workers in the top places to
work said they believed their
organizations were heading in
the “right” direction, that they
were confident in their leaders
and that the
business had
strong values
and ethics.
Almost sharing the top
spot in importance was
workers’ belief Doug Claffey,

at their jobs.
Right behind in importance
was a belief by employees that
they had good career opportunities and were provided with the
kind of training to help them
get ahead.
Workers also said it was
important to feel like they
worked for well-run organizations, that senior manag-
ers knew what was going on,
that things got done efficiently
and that everyone was well
informed about decisions at
work.
Questions about fairness
of pay and quality of benefits
proved to be of less importance
overall.
“It means that pay and benefits are not good predictors of
what’s important in a top workplace,” explains Doug Claffey, cofounder and CEO at Workplace
Dynamics, the survey partner
with the St. Petersburg Times.
The results are similar to
what Claffey’s firm found when
it conducted similar metro- or
state-specific surveys with other
newspapers across the country,
including the Boston Globe and
Dallas Morning News.
Claffey sometimes compares
pay and benefits to the table
stakes in poker — you have to
ante them up just to get into the
game.
Was there anything that
stood out in the Tampa Bay survey? “Work-life flexibility” grew
in importance, he says, probably because the survey was conducted in late 2009 amid significant economic turmoil.
Given high unemployment,
many people are holding on to
their current jobs whether they
like them or not. Claffey says
the payoff of a business with a
top workplace is that far fewer
employees who like where they
work will choose to leave when
the economy picks up. And that,
he says, is a powerful competitive advantage.
It’s not all about pay
Among top workplaces, pay and benefits often finish low
on the importance scale compared to other factors. In
part, it reflects the reality that companies with lousy pay
packages don’t enter top workplace surveys, saving
themselves the ridicule from their employees. The higher
the percentage, the more important the factor is in how
employees judge the places where they work.

that allowed employees to switch to a
four-day week with the same number
of hours. It was a hit, and the pilot program turned permanent in departments
where such flexibility made sense.
Dan Rice, who oversees underwriting new business, says about 15 of the 50
employees in his department have used
the four-day workweek. It’s just one example, Rice said, of the company listening to
its people.
“We have a very employee-focused
corporate culture,” he said. “It definitely
invests in the employee talent.”
Recognition and rewards come in
many forms.
Step off the second-floor elevator in
the call center building, and a flat-panel
monitor flashes the names of workers being honored for customer service. Managers make videos honoring
employees and pass out gift cards at
monthly luncheons.
And, as every one of the 215 employees in the call center knows, there are
Darrell Dollars.
Darrell, as in Darrell Robertson, who
runs the call center as the company’s
vice president of member services.
Workers earn Darrell Dollars throughout the year based on performance, such
as fewest mistakes one week. At a yearend auction, employees use their Darrell Dollars to bid for prizes such as DVD
players and iPods.
Constant training
On any given day, somewhere in the
organization, employees are learning to
be better at what they do through training. Some are taking courses online
from their desktop; others are sitting in
classrooms with instructors.
In 2009, employees here invested
about 31,600 hours in training — learning everything from computer programs
to management skills to telephone techniques to business writing.
One popular gerontology program
sensitizes workers to dealing with older
customers. Trainees wear blurry glasses
to experience what the vision-impaired
deal with in reading forms; they don
earplugs so they can empathize when
customers are confused in phone conversations if the speaker doesn’t enunciate. The class includes grief counseling, as employees handling claims

here. The volunteerism here has been terrific. We try to accommodate our folks with their schedules to participate. I think it fosters a great work ethic. … (With the Salvation Army) we feed some folks who are down
on their luck. I probably do that three or four times a year, and I’ve done beach cleanup. We packed up boxes
for the soldiers. It makes you feel you can make a difference, feel proud working for New York Life.”

Steady on the growth
New York Life’s allure is bolstered
by managers who are solid stewards of what the company has already
achieved, avoiding costly endeavors
even as the company grows.
Rather than invest in a new complex,
for example, New York Life has stayed
in the same office park where it started
out 16 years ago, expanding from a single floor to a whole building. As other
tenants such as USAA and Capital One
moved out to open new headquarters,
New York Life absorbed their space.
Now it occupies all three buildings
on the site, 145,000 square feet.
Stability. Steadiness. Reliability. All
are part of the comfort zone inside New
York Life.
“So many things have naturally fallen
into place for us,” Toomey said. “We’ve
been very fortunate.”

Yes, insurance companies are the
place to be.
Business management consultant
John McKee isn’t surprised.
Huge health insurers like UnitedHealth and Humana or property insurers like State Farm and Allstate rarely
show up as top-rated in such surveys.
But smaller or regional companies do
well “time and again,” said McKee, chief
executive and founder of BusinessSuccessCoach.net.
Financial stability and security are
part of the appeal. But it goes beyond
that, McKee said. These companies
leverage their financial strength to support their workers with strong benefits,
fair compensation and open lines of
communication.
“Companies who are held in highest regard by their employees are those
who treat their teams and executives
like they really matter,” he said.
“Communication flows up and
down, and one rarely hears staff members say things like, ‘Management
doesn’t care what we think.’
“In such organizations, people are
paid fairly, or at least a bit better than
average; they have health and wellness
plans for the staff that are as good as
the ones offered to management; (and)
they try to make the job interesting.”
Plus, he said, they have fun, celebrating “wins” whenever they can.
No matter the industry, McKee said
well-liked companies tend to follow
the same, age-old dictum:
“Treat your people like you’d want
to be treated.”

AMPA — The troops arrived
here in June 1994, a small band
of workers dispatched on an
unusual mission.
Insurance giant New York Life wanted to
set up a new unit devoted solely to pitching
AARP life insurance products. The Tampa
team, which had no experience in directmail marketing, was given three months to
settle in and ship out its first major mailing.
“It was a rather daunting challenge,” said
Tom Toomey, the first one on the ground here.
Like many of his original co-workers, Toomey
never left. Neither did
that spirit of entrepreneurship and autonomy
that permeated the office
in those early days.

Located on the fringe of Tampa’s West
Shore district, the New York Life complex
is home to a 60-person marketing and
research department, a cluster of actuaries and technical workers, a training division, a state-of-the-art mailing room and a
two-floor call center that handled 2.1 million phone calls in 2009.
From distributing direct-mail pitches to
fielding customer questions to processing
more than 12 million payments last year
alone, nearly everything happens in-house.
One exception: The home office in New York
prints and mails the billing statements.
“We kind of operate independently down
here from the parent company,” said Vicky
Vilaret, first vice president of marketing.
“We’re able to do our own thing, create our
own destiny.”

revenue throughout the country’s financial crisis. And as layoffs took a toll across
much of the Tampa Bay economy, the company rode a wave of security.
The unit has about 615 employees and
expects to hire about 40 more this year.

Reaping rewards
You won’t find the high-end amenities
here that some call centers pride themselves on. No on-site fitness center, no
fancy cafeteria, no dry cleaner.
T-Mobile
The wireless communications
company has 978 local employees.
Its Tampa call center, which received
10 million inbound calls last year, includes a fitness center, cyber cafe, quiet rooms, a mother’s
room and a movie theater complete with 17 reclining leather seats. Notable: It also took the Times’
survey award for Best Benefits. (See Page 20)

well, is find ways to take care of its people,
to motivate them and reward them.
That employee focus starts with the standard work week: 37.5 hours instead of 40.

real estate company
rolls out the $7,000
glass booth a couple
of times a month to
give top employees a

from a cyclone of
bank notes.
Up to $1,800 worth of
bills swirl inside the
booth. The record
haul so far in this
workplace variant of
the shopping spree:

“We like to do things
strange and different,”
chief executive Paula
Pautauros said. “It’s
hilarious. Everyone
gathers around when
we bring out the cash
machine.”
The perk demands
fast finger work from
employees. The
dryer sheet rubdown

the luscious lucre
through such backhanded means might
cause static.
Working for Busch
Gardens isn’t an endless drudge of llama
manure, candy-shop
lollipops and loop-daloop roller coasters.
With brewing behemoth AnheuserBusch’s departure
from the theme park
business — ownership that afforded
employees two free
cases of suds a month
— a good perk these
days has to be free
tickets and passes.
Aside from free
admission for employees themselves, workers get 12 tickets and
four season passes for
family and friends.
They cover not just
the main park, but
water park Adventure
Island and Orlando’s
SeaWorld. Thanks to a
reciprocal agreement,
the Busch ID card also
provides access to
Universal Studios.
Busch Gardens has
been through three
owners in less than
two years. Belgian
brewer InBev bought
Anheuser-Busch in
2008, only to spin off
the theme parks to the
Blackstone Group private equity fund last
year. But even Blackstone won’t tamper
with the pass-o-rama.
“That’s one of the keys
to working here,”said
human resources
director Mike Kraskow.
The economic slump
has socked wages
and commissions at
Seffner’s Lazydays RV
Center. But nobody’s
messing with the free
camping excursions
to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.
How popular is the
benefit among the RV
center’s 520 employees? Let’s just say the
camper is booked
52 weeks a year.
Reservations are literally apportioned by
monthly raffle.
“That’s one thing
that’s really untouchable,” executive Debbie Dube said of the
perk dreamed up by
the company’s sales
manager six years
ago. Lazydays keeps
the camper, called
a “fifth wheel,” in a
prime spot at the Disney resort. Employees
can walk to Fort Wilderness’ attractions,
including nightly
campfires, the pool
and the lodge.
The losers of the
monthly raffles
needn’t despair. Lazydays also discounts
employee stays on its
own 300-site campground on 120 acres
behind the Interstate
4 sales center.
Unlike the Disney
resort, the Lazydays
campground doesn’t
feature campfire singalongs by cartoon chipmunks Chip ’n Dale.
AMERICAN
STRATEGIC
INSURANCE CORP.
Four-day
outing
Hitting goals at this
company means
cruising to Cozumel or
white-water rafting in
Colorado. Not for a few
— for the whole staff.
Nearly 100 employees
took the St. Petersburg company up on
the cruise offer last
year. About 60 flew
to Colorado for whiteknuckled rapids the
year before that.
The four-day perk
requires some careful
crafting. Employees
get split into three outings, so work still gets
done back home. The
trips are scheduled
for the spring, before
all-hands-on-deck hurricane season. Even
location counts: Texas
and Colorado, sites of
trips in 2006 and 2008,
were expansion states
for the property insurer.
Team-building is built
in. Even on the easygoing cruise, which
has alternated years
with more adventurous outings, there’s
a scavenger hunt.
Canoeing the Rio
Grande and rafting
the Arkansas River
required camping.
“Sometimes it’s kind of
roughing it. You find out
what a groover is,” said
Eric Peters, a senior
claim representative
for ASI Underwriters.
(Hint: There aren’t
bathrooms in a forest.)

NETWORK
Two days
to do good
Can’t carve out time
for charity? There’s no
excuse at St. Petersburg’s HSN.
The 24-hour cable TV
shopping network
gives its thousands of
employees two days
off a year to don their
good-deed gear.
As they hoist soup
kitchen ladles, mentor
school kids or collect
litter from beaches,
the company covers
their paychecks.
HSN established this
perk-with-a-purpose in
1999. It started with one
paid community service day each year and
later expanded to two.
HSN employee Sarah
Miller provides a sympathetic ear to a boy
from Thurgood Marshall Middle School,
part of the Mayor’s
Mentors & More program. She will follow
him when he graduates
next year to high school.
“Last week, we were
talking about a social
studies project. Then
about sports he does
after school,” she said.
About half the company’s 2,800 local
employees volunteer
for at least one community service day a
year, human resources director Lisa Letizio
said. For many, it
becomes part of their
lives outside work.
“They get out there
and get hooked.”
ACCUSOFT PEGASUS
Nearby fun,
exercise
Software engineers
spend their days
crunching long lines
of seemingly arid
computer code.
So at Accusoft Pegasus, a Tampa imaging
software company, an
oasis is just a couple of
doors away in the form
of an in-house health
club and game room.
Pool and foosball
tables. Video games.
DVD players. Treadmills. StairMasters.
Weights. Showers.
You’ll find some of
the company’s 74
employees engaged
in play before, during
and after work.
These kinds of laidback perks are standard issue in Silicon
Valley and other hightech corridors. Tampabound computing talent expects the same,

Jack Berlin said.
“When you study
these guys, they make
a lot of money, but
money isn’t the first
thing they’re looking
for,” he said. “People
have to get up and
come in to work every
day. They either want
to do that or don’t
want to do that.”
As part of his whistlewhile-you-work
philosophy, Berlin
stocks each floor of his
building with free soda,
coffee and snacks.
Consider it fuel for the
free weights.
CAPITAL
ONE
Family
matters
Capital One must like
kids. Just ask Kevin
Grindheim.
The global financial
services giant, with
411 employees around
Tampa Bay, offers
employees $5,000
per child if they adopt.
Grindheim has used
the benefit. In spades.
After raising
five biological children, the 49-yearold employee and
his wife, Tammy,
adopted seven boys
with the help of
the company.
Dustin, Kyle and
Travis were
biological brothers from the United
States. Michael was
adopted from the
Ukraine, Cole and
Caleb from Russia,
and Timmy
from Kazakhstan.
The boyish brood are
now all teenagers.
“The company’s leadership has been completely supportive of
our efforts in each of
the adoptions,”
said Grindheim,
who has worked for
Capital One in Virginia
for nine years.
The company isn’t
just about adoptions. Having trouble
procreating? Capital
One also forks over
$10,000 for fertility
treatments.
T-MOBILE
Affordable
insurance
The politicos
in Washington
are whipping up a
crisis of alleged health
care unaffordability.
But health costs aren’t
a big problem for the
800 employees at TMobile’s call center in
New Tampa.
In an era when many
firms are socking it to
employees on health
insurance premiums,
T-Mobile workers with
families pay just $53
every two weeks, or
$1,378 a year.
That includes medical, dental and vision.
“We hear a lot about
the price,” human
resources manager
Staci Evans said.
Eligibility is lenient.
You can start collecting benefits on the
first of the month after
30 days of employment. Work 32 hours?
No problem. You’re
still eligible for fulltime benefits.
Employees with
financial, emotional
and substance abuse
problems can access
free counseling. For
emergencies, there’s
a 24-hour toll-free line.
Said Evans: “We have
people who try very
hard to stay with the
company because of
the medical benefits.”

Good workplace recipe
has many ingredients
W
hat makes a
great workplace?
Employees helping one other.
Sense of purpose. Pride and loyalty. Attention and care from top
managers. A healthy dose of fun.
Most of all, a clear mission and
confidence in leaders.
So say the findings of an
extensive survey conducted by
Workplace Dynamics based on
responses from nearly 17,000
area workers and followup
reporting by the St. Petersburg
Times. Sixty companies here
made the inaugural Top Places
to Work list, including those
publicly traded and privately
owned, nonprofits and even
some government agencies. It’s
an impressive and diverse mix of
businesses.
Among the 60 best area workplaces, I count nine technology,
seven health care, seven insurance, six nonprofit and five financial service businesses. There are
four companies in each of these
industries: retail, real estate and
professional services like law
and engineering. A sprinkling of
education, construction, government and hospitality rounds out
most of the players.
Why should we care about
really good workplaces? Because
businesses that are top places
to work can better attract and
keep the best workers. Anyone
who has worked with extremely
competent, motivated co-workers knows what often happens
in such environments. Their
enthusiasm rubs off; their quality skills get shared. Then you,
too, can pay it forward.
That becomes all the more
critical as we start to move out of
this recession. Unhappy workers
will flee mediocre workplaces
and lousy leaders when hiring
picks up. Top workplaces will
face less turmoil in a rising econ-

omy and prosper all the more.
If you are looking for work,
what better place to start than
with an in-depth look at some
of the best places to work in the
metro area? (One reason workplaces are “top” is because they
are always scouting for talent.)
There’s another reason top
workplaces produce superior
results. It’s called productivity.
The word’s gotten a bad rap in
this job-cutting recession, as in,
Hey, if we fire 10 workers and
leave 10 to do their work, we can
double our productivity! Top
workplaces tend to be more productive, often without cutting
jobs. That’s a huge factor in such
companies winning more business, providing superior service
and maintaining lower operating costs.
Why else do top workplaces
matter? If you’re in a business
seeking better ways to operate,
what better competitive intelligence is there than to see what
makes such places thrive?
The survey generated a boatload of area work force information. I got to know plenty about
a lot of well-run Tampa Bay area
businesses that frankly, even
after 19 years of reporting here, I
knew little about.
Take, for example, New Port
Richey’s Applicant Insight Inc.
The employee screening company, one of our 60 top workplaces, says it pulled together in
the tough economy and decided
to reduce staff hours to 32 while
salaried workers took a 5 percent pay cut. The group decision
worked — at least as of the time
of this survey: No one lost a job
or benefits, a group sacrifice the
company is proud of.
Among the 60 Top Places to
Work, 17 operate in Tampa, followed by nine in St. Petersburg,
four in Clearwater and two in
Oldsmar.
The others are scattered as far
north as Brooksville, as far east
as Seffner, or sprinkled in places
like Largo or Palm Harbor. Two
companies here are headquartered elsewhere in Florida. And
10 of the 60 are based in other
states, from California to New
York.
What I gain most from this indepth survey is an appreciation
for how challenging it is to create and sustain a “top place to
work.” Every day seems to start
with a renewed dedication to
make something so hard seem
so easy.
Don’t misinterpret these findings. This is not a survey of area
businesses that are simply fun
places to work. This section is
not about spotlighting workplaces where employees don’t
have to work very hard. And
this is certainly not a list of businesses that simply pay better or
have superior benefits.
Quite the contrary.
These winning businesses are
disciplined, motivated places
where people feel inspired to
work hard and be innovative
when they know they will be recognized and respected for their
accomplishments.
Pay and good benefits count,
no question. But they are not
enough. Survey results show that
other factors are more important
in creating a top workplace.
Employees, for example, most
value workplaces with direction
— where the corporate mission
is clear and leaders can articulate goals. Right behind comes
career issues, meaning workers feel they have futures and
are provided with the skills or
training to move up the ladder.
Then comes execution (managers who help get things done
efficiently and include workers
in the game plan), then conditions (good working conditions
and family flexibility), and then
management (do I have a good
boss?).
Building such workplace cultures often starts at the top with
executives who set good examples. The survey identified three
CEOs as top leaders. So we asked
the trio — Tom James from the
7,000-plus-employee Raymond
James Financial, John Auer from
167-employee ASI, and Barry
Shevlin from 110-employee Vology Data Systems (formerly
called Network Liquidators) —
to come together and share their
ideas on what makes a good
leader. Each runs a business of
very different size.
Listening to them, I was struck
by some contrasts. James, heading by far the biggest of the three
companies, pounded on the
need for growing companies to
build and maintain strong corporate accountability systems
and a culture of tough, honest
talk from the top brass. But I
also was impressed by the similarities of all three CEOs as highenergy, personally competitive
people who can motivate their
troops.
Bottom line? Smart people
eagerly follow these three leaders. And that’s a powerful asset.
Most of us spend a lot of our
time at work. Wouldn’t it be
great if we did so at a top workplace?

To make the list, employers had
to agree to have their employees fill
out a survey. Our partner, Workplace
Dynamics, gathered 16,797 responses
and scored them on a number of factors. Only the 60 with the top scores
made the cut. The complete list can
