*Niall Mac Giolla Bhríde was a poet, farmer and
songwriter from Creeslough who gained notoriety in
1905 for refusing to pay a fine he received for having
his name written in Irish on his business cart – and
not in English as was the law of the day - as he
travelled home from a fair in Dunfanaghy. His case
went all the way to the Court of the King’s Bench in
Dublin where he was defended, pro bono, by a young
barrister named Padraig Pearse. Though the case was
lost, the event angered many Irish language speakers
and revivalists and added much impetus to the
language movement of the day.

Willie Doherty, Loose Ends
Loose Ends is a major new art project by Derry/
Donegal artist Willie Doherty, which explores the
leagacy of the 1916 Easter Rising. The work was
commissioned by Donegal County Council and was
one of a small number of largescale projects funded
under the Arts Council’s ART:1916 National Projects
Awards, part of the Department of Arts, Heritage,
Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs’ Ireland
1916-2016 Centenary Programme. Comprising a
multi-sceeen video installation and a series of still
photographic images, the work builds on Willie
Doherty’s career defining interest in the relationship
between landscape and memory. Material for Loose
Ends was shot on Oileán Ghabhla/Gola Island off
the west coast of Donegal and in the environs of
Moore Street, Dublin, earlier this year.
Following the tremendously successful Drop-In
Hands-On Art Rooms of recent Culture Nights , the
Regional Cultural Centre has once again created
a large-scale Art Room where visitors of all ages
can find out more about this year’s exhibition,
Loose Ends , and be inspired by it make their
own artworks. The Art Room features background
information on the work of artist Willie Doherty as
well as on the related themes of photographic and
video art and the 1916 Easter Rising. The Room
also houses a model representation of the Asgard
which was piloted by two Gola Island fishermen on
the occasion of its ill-fated gun-running expedititon
to Ireland, and a recreation of the tunnel used by
the retreating 1916 Rebels to escape into Moore
Street from their bombed-out Headquarters in the
General Post Office.

A Walk through Lawrence’s Letterkenny
A Walking Tour with Colm Murray,
Architecture Officer, The Heritage Council
6.30pm – 7.30pm
Meet at Dunnes Stores Carpark,
Lower Main Street at 6.30pm
Presented by Donegal County Council
Heritage Office, Station Island, Lifford
w: 074 9172576 E: [email protected]
This short walking tour by Colm Murray will
highlight 100 years of the built heritage and
changing streetscapes of Letterkenny. Drawing
upon historical photographs from the Lawrence
Collection (1880-1914) taken by photographer
Robert French, Colm will identify clues to
the development of the built environment of
Letterkenny and highlight the importance of some
of its historic buildings and the contributions they
make to our streetscapes and built heritage. The
walk will start at Dunnes Stores Car Park, Lower
Main Street, proceed along the Main Street and
finish at the County Museum.
Samples of recent commissioned work that has
been completed at the Create a Link Studio will be
on show on the night.
