Pastor Christmas Message
Dearest Fellow Parishioners,
Amid the tumult and terror of global strife,
blended with the frenzy of our Chistmas preparations,
may we try to hear anew the tidings of the angel’s song and the music that is not of
earth.
As gentle good will lights our eyes, we know that we are beckoned not to follow far by
starlight to some distant shrine,
for the Babe whose coming broke the ages in two is no longer Bethlehem’s pride
but the whole wide world’s;
and the blessed gift is given to every heart that makes Him room.
May an understanding sympathy that knows no boundaries
strike deep in the hearts of all mankind.
One particular afternoon very shortly before our Fr. Peter left this world he
called me over to his home. We went downstairs into his study and walked over to a
small but very important book case full to the max with about 100 books. In it he
managed to amass all of his sermon books, not leaving even enough space for me to
open the glass doors that protected these books. Of course we cried a bit as he was
passing this important piece of his ministry on to the next generation, and I graciously
accepted them. I brought them home to our house instead of the office, because on
most weeks I try prepare my sermons from home where it mostly quiet and far from
distractions.
This morning, as I was looking for some inspirational material for a Christmas
Message to you all, I was thumbing through the books as I do so, so often and I ran
across a book of prayers written in the 1940’s. As a bookmark in one of the pages I
found, in Fr. Peter’s own handwriting, a draft of the eloquent and heartwarming prayer
that is at the top of this page.
Even in this “draft form,” those two or three sentences that he wrote,
immediately jolted me from my daily routine right into the season of our Lord’s Birth
and its universal meaning. And even though he probably wrote the prayer in the late
90’s, the message still rings true today.
I pray the same for all of you….that you might place this prayer by your bedside
and allow the message of Christ’s Birth to warm your heart as you lay your head onto
your pillow each night of the Christmas season.
A Merry Christmas to you all. Thank you Fr. Peter.
Paternally,
Please allow us to say Thank You
to all our Holy Trinity Stewards
with this year's
Holy Trinity
Christmas Card
Dear Parishioners,
The Parish Council would like to express their thanks to all the faithful Stewards of Holy Trinity Church for the year 2012. We are offering this
year's Christmas Card to the entire parish at no cost to the families of the
Community. It is one small way to thank everyone for their commitment of
time, talent and treasure to Holy Trinity Church.
We will do our best to include all the names of the Stewards of the
Community for 2012. Please call the office by December 9th only if you
do not want your name mentioned in the card. We will try to include both
spouses on the line if applicable. Call the office also with any other special
requests.
You may, however, still make a Christmas donation to the Parish by
using the envelope located inside the cover of this Trinitarian.
We thank you and wish you all of God's Blessings during this Holy
Season.
Most Sincerely,
Costa Papademetriou
Parish Board President

President’s Corner
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
I hope, by now, you have all made it through and recovered from Hurricane Sandy safely. It
was truly an epic storm that caused considerable damage to our communities. Thankfully,
there was no damage to our church facility.
I want to thank our community and our organizations, including AHEPA, Philoptochos and
our Youth for assisting those in need during this difficult time. We assisted our local
neighbours and parishes as well as those in the areas hit the hardest in the NY boroughs.
Donations made by our parishioners were delivered to Staten Island and various other
communities in the region.
I would like to also thank those who have supported our Dinner Dance program this year.
The Dinner Dance is an important annual fundraiser and the proceeds are necessary to
operate our church. A job well done by Cynthia, Cornelia and the committee!
I congratulate our well-deserved honouree at this year’s dinner dance, Georgia Lyras, who
has been a pillar in our community and has contributed in many different ways, from
managing the kitchen and preparing those great dishes at our festivals to chairing dinner
dances to teaching Sunday School to supporting Philoptochos, just to name a few of her
feats. Congratulations Georgia!
In addition to our dinner dance, November, of course, is the month we celebrate the great
American holiday – Thanksgiving, and give thanks to God as we also enjoy a great turkey
meal and some good football.
In early December, we hold our parish council elections. Members in good standing are
reminded to vote. I thank the board members who have completed their term and will be
stepping down this year. Their contributions are appreciated.
As we close out 2012, please remember the commitment you made this year to the
Stewardship program.
Wishing everyone a blessed Christmas and joyous New Year!
Costa Papademetriou
Parish Council President
Holy Trinity and the Dinner Dance Committee are extremely grateful
for this year’s sponsors. They were recognized in our Dinner Dance
Program and we wish to further thank them in the Trinitarian.

Dear Mr. Keane,
Thank you for sponsoring the Holy Trinity Church team, “Feta Kai Psomi,” at the 2012 Hellenic
History Tournament. The team members were Yiorgo Argyros, Christian DeKnatel and Niko
Georgiou. This year’s tournament was held at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Orange, CT
on Saturday, October 27th from 11:30 am to 4:30pm.
Following the introductions, Niko Georgiou was asked to read a remarkable letter he wrote to
the publisher and authors of the textbook used in his AP Global Studies class. The textbook
stated that Alexander The Great was not Greek, but that he was Macedonian. This well-written
letter was printed in the Editorial Section of the Hellenic Herald newspaper. This set the tone for
the way in which our team, “Feta Kai Psomi,” was viewed – they became the team to beat before
the competition even began.
The event was setup as a quiz-show format single elimination tournament. The teams with the
highest score in each 24 question round would move to the next round. “Feta Kai Psomi” had an
incredible performance throughout the day! They went into overtime due to ties during each
round! They answered more questions than any other competing team. They moved all the way
to the final match, which also went into overtime due to a tie. In the end, they lost by a single
point. After a nail-biting day of competition, they finished in second place, thereby each earning
a $500 scholarship.
Our team not only showed an impressive knowledge of the material, but also great
sportsmanship and worked well together as a team. As a result, they were often approached by
members of other AHEPA chapters and churches who wanted to meet our well-spoken, bright
and respectful boys.
This was a very well run event. It was incredible to be surrounded by so many students
knowledgeable in Hellenic history and proud of their heritage.
Thank you again for your encouragement and sponsorship.
Sincerely, Anthoula DeKnatel

Ladies Philoptochos Society
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church
Dear Friends,
Greek Orthodox
Ladies Philoptochos
Society
I hope this note finds you safe and sound. We have a lot to be thankful for this year.
It seems like yesterday when we had our first General Meeting of the Church year, giving us the opportunity to reconnect with our friends after a long restful summer, and to discuss the schedule of events for the upcoming year.
Thank you to all who joined us and a special thank you to Marina Sirras and Angie Lambros.
October 10th we made our way to Saint Michael’s. We had a wonderful afternoon visiting, talking and singing with
the residents. Thank you Pauline Marinos for organizing such a lovely visit.
This year on October 21st, for the first time, our Community participated in the Making Strides Breast Cancer
Walkathon. We walked in honor of our wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, nieces, aunts, sons, brothers, fathers,
uncles, husbands and friends who are survivors, are still fighting or who have lost their battles. We walked in their
honor and in honor of all those in our Holy Trinity New Rochelle family who have been affected. The Philoptochos
would like to thank everyone who joined and supported our team… we raised $6000! 16,000 people from all parts of
Westchester rallied at this year’s event raising an amazing $1,350,000 in the fight to end breast cancer. Thank you,
Despina Kartson, Cathy Florakis and Liz Zoulis for rallying us.
On Monday, November 5th our Parish undertook an emergency collection of essential items in an effort to aid in the
recovery and to relieve some of the suffering experienced by our friends and neighbors on Staten Island during
Hurricane Sandy. The response was over whelming, everybody was so generous. On Tuesday we delivered 2
truckloads of desperately needed items. Thank you to everyone who donated and who helped load the trucks and a
special thank you to Father Nick, George Williams and Tony Soukas who made the delivery of the items possible on
such short notice.
Now the holidays are fast approaching…my favorite time of year…and the busiest!
Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 6th. Plans are all set for the best ever Candlelight Dinner. Our
Christmas Celebration will include a sumptuous cocktail hour, delicious dinner and favorite Christmas Carols. A
spectacular raffle is also in the works, as well as an exciting boutique for holiday shopping and lots of surprises. Be
sure to make your reservations early and plan on coming early to browse our boutique. Join us for a fun festive
evening out with the girls! (Please see enclosed flyer for details)
Hats and Gloves for the Homeless, on December 16th we will be selling hats and gloves to be packaged with hand
warmers and holiday prayers and wishes, to be distributed to the homeless during Christmas week. We also will be
collecting coats and (new and in original packaging) socks and underwear Please support our Homeless Outreach
Ministry. December can get very cold when you have no place to live.
…and please don’t forget our Community Food Drive. As we enter the Christmas season please remember those who
go hungry. They need our help. Each Sunday we will continue to collect food for the Hope Food Pantry of New
Rochelle. The drop off bin is located outside the Church office.
Some more important days to remember...
December 20th – Homeless Outreach Soup Run
January 23rd – Knitting For Charity
January 27th - General Meeting – 2013 Budget

Dear Friends,
Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief – How You Can Help
As many of you heard this past Sunday, our Parish is continuing our effort to aid in the recovery of our friends
and neighbors from the overwhelming destruction left behind from Hurricane Sandy. There are many people
who are still in desperate need of help in the aftermath of this devastating storm. In the coming days and
weeks, as initial donations wind down, their need will continue. They will need our help more than ever.
For the next 2 weeks, Sunday November 18th through Sunday December 2nd we will be collecting gift
cards, which are needed to help families as they slowly begin to rebuild their homes.
Please consider donating gift cards from home improvement stores, such as Home Depot and Lowes, in
$25 & $50 increments.
Please bring all gift cards to the Church office by 1:00 pm Sunday, December 2 nd.
Gift cards will be delivered to Holy Trinity/St. Nicholas Church of Staten Island on Tuesday December
4th.
For more information or questions please feel free to contact Stephanie Madouros (914)328-0347
If you would like us to purchase the gift card for you, we will be glad to do so. Please make your check payable to the Ladies Philoptochos and note in memo: disaster relief gift cards.
Thank you for your support and concern.

Helaine Smith
Homer is as relevant in the 21st Century as when those beautiful lyrical epic poems were first recited, 2,800 years ago. His
poems were and continue to be an extraordinary achievement that has never been equaled. The Iliad, the Odyssey and
the ancient Hymns are presented through Homer’s own prism of disputes and negotiations among the Gods, and through
moving contrasting scenes between mortal heroes and immortal Gods. The power of the Gods was only constrained by their
need to placate each other, destiny, and the conflict between human aspirations and divine will. Homer’s humor, intricate
plots, deep emotion and ultimately civilized values led directly to the unsurpassed plays of ancient Greek theater, and
through the ages, to all our great literature.
Helaine Smith’s insights, interpretations, and introspections provide an excellent canvas on which to revisit these classical
poems. Her translations preserve much of their original lyrical beauty and her explanation of ancient Greek sentence
structure tries to supplement anything that may have been lost. She selects essential verses and doesn’t follow Homer’s
sequence, but rather a more common sense progression of the story line. She introduces the selected passage with
background and implications before the verses, all of which are footnoted on the same page, to add immediate
comprehension and
insight. Having everything on the same page facilitates the text and makes everything clear to the
reader – the vocabulary, the literary forms, the machinations of the Gods, Homeric epithets, and even the Greek word
derivations. It is a masterful job that truly brings out the richness of the texts.
And if a contemporary, insightful, and user friendly presentation of these texts were not enough, there is
more! Helaine Smith harnesses her vast experience, as an English literature teacher, to provide exercises in creative writing,
questions for discussion and critical thinking, along with sample essays responding to topical questions from the text. Her
presentation of these skills, that are all but ignored in our educational system today, is well founded. College bound students
will benefit tremendously from these
exercises. English teachers will love using these seminal works of Western literature
as source texts. It is strongly recommended adding this text to all Chapter libraries and, even more importantly, donating it to
community Greek schools and Advanced Placement English teachers, in neighboring Middle Schools and High Schools.
This is a must read for anyone interested in the development of Western Civilization!

“The First Victory” is a must read for any student of Greek
history, or of the Second World War.
Until October 1940, Hitler and Mussolini had achieved their territorial ambitions everywhere and
generally in a matter of weeks. However, on the 28th of October, Mussolini presented Greece with
an ultimatum that would lead to his armies being thoroughly defeated by Greece for five and one half
months, thus establishing the first victory for the Allies in World War II. Hitler anticipating an easy
success in Greece authorized the attack on Russia, which would prove so disastrous for Germany
because of the courageous resistance of the Greek army and people. The costs and sacrifices of
Greece are well documented and the implications and consequences carefully explained, but
perhaps the greatest contribution is the well thought out: “What would have happened if Greece
didn’t” scenario.

2013 Trinitarian Advertisement Contract
Dear Friends of the Community,
In an effort to defray the cost of publishing our Trinitarian, the
Parish Council would like to invite anyone who wishes to support the
Community to offer a small donation of $250.00 for a “business card”
sized ad which will be placed on the back inside pages of each publication
for the calendar year, 2012.
We generally publish about 8 Trinitarians per year, and with this
program, hope to cut our publication cost in half by gathering 24 ads which
will take up the last three pages of the Trinitarian.
If you are interested in this program, please fill out the bottom
portion of this appeal and enclose a business card that we will reproduce.
Please also enclose a check made out to Holy Trinity Church for $250.00.
