History
The Story of Jarnac

Dating back to a Gallo-Roman
settlement around 2000 years
old, Jarnac has experienced many
invasions, from which it was forced
to defend itself. First a castle was
built and then, in the 13th century
during the 100 Years War, ramparts
were added. A few remains of these
survive to this day.
For a long time the old town was confined to an area between
the castle of Rohan-Chabot (now destroyed) and the church.
Thanks largely to the Cognac trade, it gradually grew in size,
taking in other areas and transforming the riverbanks.
In the Renaissance period, it found a place in french history
with the so-called “Coup de Jarnac” as well as with the battle of
Jarnac, fought between Protestants and Catholics. In the 20th
century it witnessed the birth of François Mitterrand, President
of the Republic from 1981 to 1995.
The “Coup de Jarnac”
In 1506, from the union of Charles Chabot and Jeanne de SaintGelais, Guy Chabot was born. He spent much of his time at the
castle of Saint Germain-en-Laye in the company of the king,
François 1er and his mistress, the Duchesse d’Etampes (whose
sister, Louise de Pisseleu, Chabot married).

Dauphin’s) stepmother
as his mistress. Guy
Chabot
demanded
satisfaction, but had to
wait until François 1er had
died and the Dauphin
had acceded to the
throne as Henri II. On
the 10th of July 1547 in
front of the whole court a duel took place between Chabot and
François de Vivonne, who had taken it upon himself to defend
the Dauphin’s slanders. Chabot won, thanks to two skilful cuts
to the back of his opponent’s left knee. These blows were quite
fair and legitimate, and not as implied by today’s use of the
phrase “Coup de Jarnac” meaning “a stab in the back”.
Jarnac, birth place of
François Mitterrand
François Mitterrand, born in Jarnac in 1916,
donated part of his collection of presidential
gifts to the town. The house where he was
born (lived in by his mother’s family for over a
century) lies within easy reach of the riverside quay that today
bears his name. According to his wishes, he is buried in the
Grands Maisons Cemetery.
The “Three Chabots”
The Jarnac coat of arms is the one of Chabot’s house whose
origins date back to the beginning of
the 11th century. It is in gold with three
“chabots” and surmounted by a mural
crown and three crenellated towers.
The motto “Concussus Resurgo”
can be translated as “Struck
down, I rise again”.
Chabot is the common
name given to a wide variety of bony fish with a
large head and spiny fins. From the 11th century,
the nickname “Cabot” or “Chabot” has been given
to someone who is seen to be either “big-headed”
or alternatively “pig-headed”.
Potters’ Ovens from
the Gallo-Roman period
The Grands Maisons Cemetery
During excavations between 1965 and 1970, potters’
ovens dating back to Gallo-Roman times were discovered
in the Grands Maisons area of the town, and these were
moved to the cemetery in 1974. They were used to heat
the characteristic grey-clay pots that were made by our
Jarnac ancestors.
Twinned Towns
By twinning with other towns Jarnac demonstrates that
it wants to embrace the outside world. The twinning
system has allowed us to satisfy this consistent wish
to share our culture and way of life through exchanges.
Our choice of ‘twins’ bears witness to this: Dalkeith
(Scotland) in 1960, Lautertal (Germany) in 1982,
Donnacona (Québec) in 1995 and Dogliani (Italy) in
2000.

The Church of Saint Pierre

This church offers a beautiful 13th century crypt and a german
organ from the end of the 19th century, bought in 1900 by the
town and the parish of Jarnac.
The Museum
•A collection made up of objects, sculptures and drawings given to
President Mitterrand by celebrities from all over the world.
•An exhibition including models of the major architectural and townplanning projects initiated by François Mitterrand from 1981 to
1991 and undertaken by famous international architects. A video
area and set of mounted displays.

Poet’s Corner: Pierre Boujut

The birthplace of François Mitterrand opened its doors to the public
on January the 8th of 2006, on the tenth death anniversary of the
former president.
You can visit the rooms where François Mitterrand spent his childhood
and immerse yourself in the lifestyle, which marked and formed the
Presidents youth. An exhibition of photographs and documents put
together by the François Mitterrand
Institute encourages a better
understanding of the family and the
young life of the President.

The Temple

In 1761 the Protestants built their “House of Prayer”, opening
on to the alleyway. The present Temple was built in 1821 by
Paul Abadie (the Elder) from plans drawn up by François-Nicolas
Pineau. The façade, the layout of the interior and the Merklin
organ together justify its listed status at the «monuments
historiques».

From the very beginning Jarnac has been inseparable from the
river. The proximity of the Charente was the reason why the
Gallo-Roman potters came here. It was again the river that
contributed to the rapid expansion of the town through the
trade in salt, wine and brandy which were transported by sailing
barge (the Charentaise “gabarre”). Today, pleasure boats and
water sports have taken over. Whether you stroll along the
Chaussée des Moulins, towards the lock, in the Jardin Public or
on the quayside, whether you take a boat trip or go canoeing or
fishing or just watch the kingfishers and grey herons, that same
close relationship between town and river persists to this day.

The surroundings of the Charente, as well as of its tributaries,
the Soloire and the Guirlande, provide a chance to observe a

winter life of people in the Charentes. The traditional double

At the beginning of the 11th century (in the
diocese of Saintes where it borders on the diocese
of Angoulême) Wardrade le Riche, Lord of Jarnac and
his wife, Rixendis founded an abbey on the banks of the Charente. The place
was called Bassiacum or Baziacum and today is known as Bassac.
A visit there is not to be missed.
Abbey and abbey-church founded in the 11th century, listed as a
building of historical interest in 1880 - ruins of the former church of
St. Nicholas – “Bassigeau”, a fishermen’s paradise – “La Trache”: the
bridge, its alleyways and the wood mill. Park – craft centre.

On a hillside overlooking the river, Bourg is a
village rich in historic remains and picturesque

Built on the slope of a hill, Fleurac provides many fine
views. On the border of the ancient provinces of the
Saintonge and the Angoumois, its charming river, the
Guirlande winds through lush, green meadows.

Foussignac is known as the village of wells, amongst which is the
“puits des Ages” (Well of Ages). Situated in the area around
the Chai des Pères (formerly a farm owned by the Abbey at
Bassac) it is certainly the oldest well in the region. It was used
as a watering place for the horses of the lords of Aunis when
they visited their fellow noblemen in the Angoumois.

Situated in the Grande Champagne area, the
“Holy of Holies” in terms of cognac production,
Gondeville’s economic prosperity is bound up with
cognac, Charentais melons and sand quarrying.

Houlette is traversed from East to West by the
ancient Roman road from Lyon to Saintes. When
its two rivers, the Tourtrat and the Thidet were in
flood, this prevented the spread of phylloxera and
so gave its vines a special interest. Unfortunately this distinction has
now disappeared.

The original settlement of Jarnac clustered around the
castle (itself demolished in the 19th century) has
developed today into a modern, busy town which
welcomes visitors. In the premises of numerous
cognac ‘negociants’ in Jarnac, the world-famous
spirit is being slowly aged in barrels.

This village, founded in 1793, contains many
reminders of its Protestant past. Nowadays
the vine-covered hillsides bear witness to the

Situated close to the Roman road from Saintes to
Périgueux, the Provostship of Mainxe was originally the
property of the Counts of Angoulême. It is rich in traces
of the past; do not miss the little church rebuilt in 1867.

Mérignac is situated on the banks of the
Guirlande. Both the village and its church owe
their origins to the spring, which in former
times had a reputation for curing many different
maladies. It is essentially a wine-producing village,
and remains today a busy and thriving community.

Situated in the heart of a picturesque area
known for its pastoral charm, this pleasant
village owes its name to the system of rents
(métayage) due to the Lord of Jarnac. It is one of
only two villages in France to have neither a church
nor a cemetery.

Peaceful green foliage lines the banks of the Soloire
right up to the foot of the church which dominates the
village. The river itself is a paradise for fish. Nercillac is a
farming area, but above all wine-producing. Thanks to the
richness of the soils and the skill of its nurserymen it has
become the centre for growing young vines.

Réparsac’s origins go back to the first centuries
of the Christian era. The adjoining wooded areas
provide pleasant, tree-shaded walks. Along the
cool, green banks of the Soloire and Tourtrat rivers
is a fishermen’s paradise.

Saint-Même takes its name from the stone
quarries in the area. In a pleasant, rural setting, its
houses are strung out along the D10 road.

The village of Sainte-Sévère took its name from a
young girl martyred in 660 in the Trèves area. It is
well known for its Roman camp, the most famous
in the region. Both the Soloire and the Thidet
rivers run through the village; and the area is partly
covered by the Jarnac forest, providing many fine
walks.

Sigogne is an important wine-producing village
situated in the heart of the ‘fins bois’ cognac
area. It offers to the visitor two beautiful shady
squares as well as a church with an imposing square bell-tower, one
of the finest in the Charente.

This pleasant place is in fact three villages in one:
Triac, Lautrait and Lantin. It is near here that the
Battle of Jarnac took place on March 13th 1569,
in which the Prince de Condé lost his life. A stone

Romanesque churches lie scattered all over
the Jarnac area, surviving testament to the
influence of the Church. A guidebook « the
churches of the vineyard » contains stories about each of them
as well as an appreciation of the broader historical context you
can discover through five tours about fifty kilometres each.

The history of the battle of Jarnac written at the
place where itself was held in 1569. Wandering
the highways and byways, you will be struck by
the sheer abundance of our local heritage: public
washing places, wells, typical Charentais doorways
and houses – all witnesses to a rich inheritance. Picnic area and
pedestrian walk.
