responsible for renowned projects like LOOP, the world’s leading videoart platform among others, created in 2003 in Barcelona.
Screen Projects is a cultural agency dedicated to contemporary art, with a
special focus in the moving image community.
Through partnerships with leading international agents and local platforms,
it generates projects that materialize in different formats and locations.

In 2012, Screen Projects has commissioned the Barcelona Pavilion for the 9th Shanghai Biennale.

This is not a love song sets out to trace the genealogy of the relations between
pop music and video-creation from the 1960s to today, with the emphasis on
those moments in which there was feedback between the two manifestations
as they explored the field of experiment, utopia and political incorrectness.
Since the 1960s, various generations of avant-garde artists have integrated into
their production processes elements that are related with the attitudes and
imaginaries of pop music.

Artists of the calibre of Andy Warhol, Vito Acconci, Dan Graham, Nam June
Paik, Joseph Beuys, John Baldessari, Rodney Graham, Tony Oursler, Christian
Marclay, Mike Kelley, Douglas Gordon, Jeremy Deller o Damien Hirst, and
many more, down to today, have approached this genre in some of their most
outstanding works, sometimes even collaborating with different rock bands or
recording their own albums.
Similarly, leading musicians such as John Lennon, David Bowie, Pete Townshend, Syd Barret, Brian Eno, Alan Vega, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson and
members of essential bands of the last two decades, like Sonic Youth, REM,
Blur, or Franz Ferdinand all trained at art school before becoming professional
musicians.

El festival de videocreación, que arranca mañana, explora el cruce de caminos entre música y vídeo
Loop, esto es arte, que suene la música

El pasado enero, coincidiendo
con su 66 cumpleaños, David
Bowie regresaba a la escena musical con Where are we now? (¿Dónde estamos ahora?), un single y
un vídeo lúcido y sombrío en el
que el propio músico aparece como si fuera una cabeza parlante,
el cuerpo reducido al tamaño de
un muñeco de trapo, mientras habla de “pasear a los muertos”.
Una imagen inquietante y poderosa para la que Bowie contó con
la complicidad de un reconocido
artista visual, Tony Oursler, con
obra en los principales colecciones del mundo y al que recientemente la Tate Modern dedicaba
una exposición. La alianza entre
músicos y artistas no es nueva. El
propio Oursler ha estado vinculado desde siempre a la música (formó parte en los setenta de la banda punk The Poetics) y el caso es
que desde los primeros escarceos
visuales de Andy Warhol y la Velvet Underground –e incluso antes–, los caminos entre la videocreación y la música pop no
han dejado de cruzarse. Pues
bien, este será uno de los ejes temáticos de Loop, certamen que
ha situado Barcelona en una referencia internacional de la videocreación y que, en su undécima edición –del 16 al 25 de mayo– estrecha su red de complicidades con otros eventos culturales como Primavera Sound, cuyo
público a buen seguro comparte
con el del videoarte muchas más
afinidades de las que pueda parecer a primera vista.
Tras una primera década marcada sobre todo por un crecimiento imparable –llegó a ocupar hasta un centenar de espacios por toda la ciudad–, parece
que ha llegado la hora de “ordenar las ideas y de definir mejor

Tanto Durán como Álvarez recuerdan que en el 2003, cuando
nació el certamen (primero como una simple feria en un hotel,
luego se amplió a un festival por
toda la ciudad y ahora estrena
programa pedagógico) no existía
ningún acontecimiento en el
mundo dedicado al videoarte.

neo”, apunta Álvarez, quien recuerda que el volumen de negocio que genera va más allá de las
operaciones de venta que se generan en la feria propiamente dicha
(Hotel Catalonia Ramblas, Pelayo, 28, del 23 al 25 de mayo) y be-

de la ciudad. El presupuesto de
este año es de 800.000 euros, un
8% menos que el del año pasado.
Loop 2013 dará mañana el pistoletazo de salida con uno de los
platos fuertes del festival. Se trata de una exposición en Arts Santa Mònica, Haute Fidélité/Alta Fidelidad, que presenta por primera vez en el extranjero los fondos
de la FMAC (Les Collections du
Fonds d’art contemporain de la
Ville de Genève) y en el que figuran obras de artistas de la talla de
Laurie Anderson, Samuel Beckett, William Burroughs, John
Cage, Gary Hill, Pipilotti Rist, Richard Serra, Bill Viola o Robert
Wilson. Esta muestra se incluye

BARCELONA. Les problemàtiques
socials i polítiques i la relació del vídeo i la música centraran el contingut de Screen Barcelona, el festival
de videoart que arrenca demà a Barcelona i que fa de pròleg de la fira
Loop. És la primera vegada que els
organitzadors, els galeristes Carlos
Duran i Emilio Álvarez, han suggerit que els treballs que es podran
veure en museus, galeries d’art, centres culturals, seus d’entitats, bars
i altres espais, tinguin una temàtica determinada. “El fet que hi hagi
uns eixos temàtics ajuda a definir
els continguts de les exposicions, i
el públic els agraeix. A l’hora de fer
la programació hem tingut en
compte també els punts d’exploració dels museus i dels col·lectius.
Per això enguany els equips de curadors han guanyat pes en el festival”,
explica Duran.
Entre els plats forts del festival
–que s’enceta amb l’exposició de
l’Arts Santa Mònica Alta fidelitat–,
el Macba presentarà demà The radiant, del duet d’artistes The Otolith
Group, La Virreina acollirà l’exposició col·lectiva This is not a love
song i la Casa Amèrica, la 5a setmana de vídeo iberoamericà. Antoni

Pel que fa a l’onzena edició de
Loop, que se celebrarà a l’Hotel
Catalonia Ramblas, s’hi estrenaran 18 vídeos. La fira reunirà 44
galeries, una menys que l’any passat. El 84% són internacionals, sobretot franceses. Pel que fa als 46
artistes participants, només sis
són d’arreu de l’Estat. Entre els
participants hi ha noms com Igna-
si Aballí, Elena Asins, Ryan Gander, Rubén Grilo, Gary Hill, Harun
Farocki i Javier Pérez.
A més de la fira i del festival, Loop traurà el cap al món acadèmic
amb la col·laboració de la Universitat de Barcelona. Del 22 al 24 de
maig se celebrarà Loop Studies, que
inclourà tres taules rodones a l’entorn de les pràctiques col·laboratives en el camp de la creació i la producció artístiques. El pressupost del
festival, la fira i les jornades és de
prop de 800.000 euros.e
ARTS ESCÈNIQUES
Jordi Savall serà el convidat
de la Fira Mediterrània

que “des de la música culta ha reivindicat la matèria popular com a
entitat de primer ordre”.
Amb la reconversió del Centre d’Arts Santa
Mònica, que deixarà de ser un centre d’exhibició
per convertir-se en un centre d’activitats, les
exposicions programades s’han quedat orfes. El
Museu d’Història de Catalunya n’acollirà dues, per
ara. El 29 de maig inaugurarà Els plafons perduts
de l’Associació Wagneriana, on es mostra com
l’il·lustrador, escriptor i director teatral Adrià Gual
es va acostar a Wagner. Són dotze llenços sobre
tela que, per primera vegada, surten de la
Biblioteca de Catalunya. El setembre vinent el
museu acollirà també l’exposició sobre el poeta
Joan Teixidor comissariada per Sam Abrams.
■ World Press Photo certifica que la
millor foto del 2012 és autèntica
La Fundació World Press Photo ha certificat que la
fotografia guardonada aquest any com a millor
imatge del 2012 no ha estat manipulada. Paul
Hansen, que va guanyar amb una imatge que
mostra dos nens morts a Gaza per un míssil israelià,
ja havia dit que la fotografia ni era “una composició”
ni era “falsa”, tal com denunciava dilluns un blog.
■ Neix Bachcelona, un festival per
divulgar l’obra de Bach a la ciutat
La fusió de la música de Bach amb el jazz de Manel
Camp i Llibert Fortuny, un concert participatiu i
altres recitals en llocs emblemàtics com el Palau
de la Música i la catedral seran els protagonistes
entre el 25 i el 28 de juliol de la primera edició del
Bachcelona. En el marc del festival també s’han

Savall la inaugurará con su es-
pectáculo Mare Nostrum. Diálogo de las músicas otomanas, cristianas y judías del Mediterráneo,
centrado aquí en la música oriental y del repertorio turco-otomano. Para ello contará con el cantante israelí Lior Elmaleh, educado en la música andalusí (lo que
conservaron los sefardíes de la
tradición hispana), y Gursoy Dinçer (Estambul, 1975), el actual re-

pacto en el imaginario colectivo.
La otra, This is not a love song,
tendrá lugar en la Virreina Centre de la Imatge (a partir del día
22), y trazará una genealogía entre música pop y videocreación
desde los años sesenta hasta la actualidad. Al margen de las exposiciones, destaca un encuentro propiciado con Primavera Sound entre videocreadores y músicos.
Loop, en fin, estrena nuevos escenarios, como el Cercle del Liceu, y tendrá un segundo foco de
atención en aquellos trabajos
más comprometidos o que muestran mayor implicación con la
realidad social, englobados bajo
el título genérico Poetics &
Politics. Asimismo, se pondrá en
marcha una plataforma de debate y comunicación en Internet,
DoingDoing, comisariada por El
Arte en la Edad del Silicio.c

Section 1
Pop and video-creation. Shared genealogies
This section includes more than 30 significant works in the history of video art and experimental film from the 1960s to 2013 that are formally and
conceptually related to the iconographies of pop and rock. It is arranged by subject matter in five chapters:
1 - Art in pop / Pop in art (rooms 1, 2, 3 and 4)
Includes work by pioneering artists of pop art and video art like Andy Warhol, Ronald Nameth, Nam June Paik, Jud Yalkut, Eric Siegel and Yayoi Kusama.
2 – Hysteria and religion (rooms 5, 6, 7 and 9)
Based on Dan Graham’s audiovisual and literary essay Rock My Religion, it deals with the failure of the utopias and the alienating components of rock
and also includes works by Douglas Gordon, Tony Oursler, Laurence P. Berger and Largen & Bread.
3. ‘Non-musicians’ vs ‘non-artists’. Rock and conceptual art (room 7 and Miserachs Room)
Looks at the paradoxical relations between rock and conceptual art and new artistic behaviour like performance art. For artists like Dan Graham and
Christian Marclay, interest in rock is tied to performance art, but also to punk and no wave, movements in which being able to play a musical instrument wasn’t always necessary in order to create music.
4 - ‘Rock and its double’. Pop music as a ‘toolbox’ (rooms 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12)
In the last 20 years, both art-inspired rock and rock related more or less consciously with art allow a glimpse of a melancholy awareness of the history
that went before them, or, as Elizabeth Guffey points out, ‘a populist attempt to snatch history from the hands of professional historians’.
5 – Policies of dance music (rooms 14 and 15)
This section analyses the power of dance music to emancipate and its ability to visibilise identities, questions of race, gender, class, agit-pop, and
some examples of civil rights demands through the festive repoliticisation of the public space. It includes works by Jeremy Deller, Charley Case, John
Di Stefano, Mark Leckey, Adrian Piper, Charles Atlas and Assume Vivid Astro Focus.

This section, divided into two chapters, is a journey through the history of the musical videoclip to review the careers of the most important authors
of the last 40 years and their connections with contemporary visual arts and cinema. It includes a programme showing musical videos by artists like
Andy Warhol, Tony Oursler, Judith Barry, Robert Longo, Joan Logue, Damien Hirst, Dough Aitken, etc., and another of artists who parody or redefine
this aesthetic.

The six programmes making up this chapter explore the beginnings of the genre, back in the 1960s and 1970s, its ‘golden age’ in the 1980s, its establishment as an ‘author’s medium’ in the 1990s, with essential names such as Chris Cunningham, Michael Gondry, Jonas Akerlund, Anton Corbijn, Floria Sigismondi, David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, Hype Williams, Tarsem, Stéphane Sednaoui, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Spike Jonze and Mark Romanek,
and the outlook for its future in the 21st century through a programme drawn up exclusively by the Primavera Sound festival.
