NAVCANmet
u
Advanced meteorological tools for
enhanced weather data and reporting.
When it comes to maintaining airport efficiency and
safety, the availability of reliable weather data is a critical
component. The right tools can improve data accuracy
and result in better weather reports allowing for improved
service delivery.
The NAVCANmet suite of meteorological products
responds to this challenge with advanced systems for
aviation weather observation, recording and reporting.
Air navigation service providers and meteorological
agencies can depend on NAVCANmet data to monitor
and respond to weather conditions with a high degree of
confidence.
Originally developed for the challenging weather
environments of Canada, our systems utilize intelligent
technology, combined with real time weather data to
improve reporting accuracy. NAVCANmet products will
help improve airport capacity and route management,
and enhance aircraft safety, in the air and on the ground.
Integrated Meteorological Systems
NAVCANmet products include meteorological systems
used at manned and unmanned airports. The suite
consists of four seamlessly integrated products that
operate on a common architecture:
•
•
•
•
Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS)
Weather Data Manager
Human Weather Observation System (HWOS)
Enhanced Weather Camera
For airports large and small, these products provide
real-time meteorological information, aviation routine and
special weather reports (METAR and SPECI), and high
quality data to improve aviation forecasts.
Customized to Your Environment
Each of these tools can be purchased and used as a
stand-alone product that is scalable, expandable, and
fully customizable to work with other third-party systems
at any site. Specific systems are web-enabled, with
an intuitive and easy-to-use graphic user interface. All
NAVCANmet products meet the rigorous requirements of
the international standards set by the International Civil
Aviation Organization, World Meteorological Organization,
NAV CANADA and Transport Canada.
AWOS
Automated Weather Observation System
Product Benefits
The NAVCANmet AWOS offers significant improvements in data quality and data assurance. Using
a robust suite of weather sensors and optional weather cameras, this advanced AWOS collects and
verifies data which is then automatically formatted into METAR and SPECI weather reports.
The system also complies with aviation weather observation and forecasting standards in accordance
with the exemption to Canadian Aviation Regulations (CAR) 804.01(c), the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Industry leading technology from Coastal Environmental Systems and Vaisala is incorporated into our
AWOS to enable seamless integration with other NAVCANmet products.

Weather Data Manager
Product Benefits
The exchange of data between multiple weather
observation sites in different geographic locations
is essential to the quality assurance and quality
control of an airport’s local weather reports.
The NAVCANmet Weather Data Manager is the
core of a complete weather system. This advanced
weather observation data exchange system
aggregates weather data from multiple weather
station locations in order to provide synoptic
weather observations, and other weather data to
a centralized database for forecast production
purposes.
More specifically, the Weather Data Manager
validates and qualifies both human and automated
weather observations from HWOS and AWOS, and
derives qualified weather data from weather history,
sensors and observations. It also provides quality
assurance checks, using centralized weather data
from multiple geographic locations to enhance the
accuracy and reliability of local weather reports.
The Weather Data Manager is a Linux-based
solution developed using proven technologies. It
provides web browser-based access to powerful
system administration, configuration and data
display. It is flexible and scalable to support
implementation at any size location. Clientspecific outputs from this system include METAR
and SPECI in XML and World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) BUFR formats. As well, the
Weather Data Manager supports many plug-ins for
functions such as data archiving, data monitoring,
systems monitoring, systems management and
reporting.
For Canadian applications, the Weather Data
Manager provides a seamless proven interface for
delivery of weather observations to Environment
Canada forecast production systems.
HWOS
Human Weather Observation System
Product Benefits
The NAVCANmet HWOS provides quick, accurate
and reliable weather reporting where manned
weather observations are an integral part of aviation
operations.
It is an advanced Linux-based system that allows
weather observers to record and report aviation
and synoptic weather observations more efficiently.
HWOS provides a web browser interface for weather
observation entry. It automates the calculation
and transcription of sensor data, and eliminates
the need for paper recording and reporting. This
improves the quality and assurance of data that
might otherwise be prone to human error, and
allows staff to focus on more value-added tasks.
The NAVCANmet HWOS system can operate in
unattended mode to deliver meteorological sensor
data at configurable intervals for posting on a web
site, and for use by meteorological agencies. In
addition, this system can be easily configured to
work with weather data collected from third party
weather sensors, generating cost savings for airport
weather stations with existing AWOS, or with
standalone sensor systems.
The NAVCANmet HWOS is modular, scalable and
expandable. This unique semi-automated system
provides highly accurate real-time weather data
continuously to other working stations in a variety of
data formats.
It can also be fully integrated with the NAVCANsuite
tower automation products, including NAVCANatis,
to enhance critical air traffic management decision
making. Centralized weather data from the HWOS
conveniently interfaces with the tower controller’s
working position to provide real-time wind, altimeter,
and other weather information on the controller’s
touch screen display. This configuration replaces
dedicated instrument displays and enhances the
efficiency of the tower environment.
Enhanced Weather Camera
Product Benefits
Traditional visibility sensors, including those used
on AWOS, can often be obscured by localized
phenomena such as smoke, swarms of insects, and
drifting dust or snow. Such events often trigger
under-reporting of visibility which affects airport
approach procedures, and ultimately causes delays.
Our Enhanced Weather Camera sees through these
kinds of obstructions, giving a more accurate view of
prevailing airport conditions.
The NAVCANmet Enhanced Weather Camera is
a leading-edge weather software tool, utilizing
Searidge Technologies’ IntelliDAR™ airport surface
management system. This tool provides all the
functionality of advanced weather camera software
with the added feature of an Enhanced Visibility
Calculator. Using our proprietary target detection
algorithms, the Enhanced Visibility Calculator
provides better visibility reporting, free from
obscurities.
When discrepancies between traditional AWOS
reports and actual airport conditions arise, our
Enhanced Weather Camera acts as a second pair
of eyes. The camera’s advanced target detection
functions are used to reassess and automatically
augment visibility reports, making visibility data
more reliable and accurate.
