St. Joseph Services Update: December 2012
ST. JOSEPH SERVICES UPDATE
DEVELOPING YOUTH. EDUCATING ADULTS. TRANSFORMING LIVES.
December 2012
SJS welcomes Sr. Sharon Horace as we say goodbye to
Whitney Kimmet, Daughters of Charity postulant
The St. Joseph Services team has been blessed with Whitney Kimmet’s gifts since last July. Whitney is a Daughters
of Charity postulant who came to donate her time and skills in SJS Development and as a tutor. She originally hails
from Yorktown, Virginia, and has quite an eclectic background.
Having played the flute since she was 12, Whitney majored in music
in college and thereafter went on to work in the field of theme park
management. After joining the Daughters of Charity in January
2010, she has traveled to numerous cities in the United States
including Washington D.C. and Detroit, where she taught
kindergarten and religious education. Her next stop was Chicago,
where she joined the SJS Development team and has worked on
various tasks including managing donations, database restructuring,
and Fall Festival planning. She also tutors students at Josephinum
Academy where she set up an SJS after school academic help center.
After she leaves SJS in January, she will continue on to St. Louis
Whitney shares her gift of music with St. Angela
where she will participate in seminary—immersion in community,
summer camp students
deep prayer, and spiritual formation. “I’ve really loved being here,”
she says, “I‘ve been so impressed with the dedication of so many volunteers.” Whitney’s skills and generosity
have been much appreciated during her time here, and she will be truly missed by the staff and students she has
helped so tirelessly.
As we say goodbye to Whitney, SJS is excited to welcome Sr.
Sharon Horace. Sr. Sharon has spent the last two years in Kenya
working with students at St. Catherine Girl’s Secondary and Poly
Technical schools, teaching classes, holding retreats, and
developing leadership programs. The four years prior to her work
in Kenya, she served as the Assistant Director and Mission and
Youth Coordinator at Proyecto Juan Diego in Brownsville, Texas.
Sr. Sharon has a background in fine arts and fine arts education
and has earned a Master in Pastoral Studies from Loyola
University. SJS looks forward to utilizing Sr. Sharon’s creativity to
aid in Vincentian mission integration, coordination of the tutoring
center at Josephinum Academy, and as an adult ESL instructor. Be
sure to stop by and welcome Sr. Sharon!

Joy to you this Christmas! A young St. Joseph Services
student (left) exudes the love and appreciation we at St.
Joseph Services have for you—our volunteers and
donors!
We are so grateful to you for your ongoing generosity
to our mission to bring quality education programs to
some of Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods. Through
afterschool programs, weekend and evening sports and
classes, computer skills and ESL tutoring, you have helped us reach
over 600 students, ages 3-83 with the help of 300 trained volunteer tutors. May you feel the
joy you give to us.
Blessings to you,
Lisa Sand Sullivan, Executive Director
May you and your loved ones have a Merry Christmas
and a peace-filled New Year!
