One of the most fun things about our community is all of the special events that occur during
the holiday season. It is a good time to get out
and enjoy being with friends and family as we
celebrate. The Woodlands Convention and
Visitors Bureau has several events coming up.
The Ice Rink Special Preview Weekend
begins November 10th & 11th, and the rink is
open daily from November 17th until January
21st. iWOW (International Winter on the Waterway) and Lighting
of the Doves will be held November 17th from 3-9 PM in Town
Green Park and along the Waterway. Bring the little ones to see
Santa arrive by boat and to see how other countries celebrate. There
will be Caroling on the Square with various community groups
every Saturday in December from 6-8 PM at Waterway Square.
Market Street will be a special place to visit, kicking off the season
on November 15th with the Tree Lighting Ceremony–always a
spectacular sight! There will be special performances several times
a week throughout December, including the Grand Chanukah
Celebration on December 9th at 4:30 PM. The celebration will continue with the unique Tuba Christmas from 12-1 PM on December
22nd, and you won’t want to miss a trip to see Santa in his special
house to have your kids’ photos made. You can go to our Concierge
Desk in the North passage and check your packages while you shop.
Hop on the trolley and go over to The Woodlands Mall.
The Mall always has a festive look during the holidays. Stop by our
Guest Services Center at the top of the escalator and ask about specials and events that are going on. Our Chamber employees can provide packets for guests who may be visiting you for the holidays. You
won’t want to miss Breakfast with Santa on November 17th from
9-11 AM, Elf Academy on December 8th at noon, and Carolers
from November 23rd through December 22nd from 6-8 PM.
This year there will be a special Holiday Symphony Spectacular–
Holly Jolly Pops at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on
December 7th from 6-7:30 PM. This promises to be a hit for young
and old alike.

The Chamber Honors Volunteers
The suspense is over! At The Woodlands Area Chamber of
Commerce’s Annual Awards Luncheon, the honorees were announced
for Volunteer of the Year, Community Citizen of the Year, Diplomat
of the Year, Chairman’s Award, and Legacy Award for the 2011-2012
fiscal year.
The Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year has been an outstanding volunteer for The Chamber. Congratulations to Danny Schroder of Amegy
Bank for being selected as the 2012 Volunteer of the Year!
Danny is a tireless Chamber volunteer. He is a Chamber Board
Member and serves as Vice President of Economic Development for
the second consecutive year.
Maddie, one of Danny’s three daughters, gave a heartfelt comment
after the presentation of the award about how her dad “always listens
to me about my problems and always tells me to lend an ear to others.”
Dr. Ann Snyder, The Chamber’s 2011-2012 Chairman of the Board,
presented the award to Danny. She said, “Danny is an incredible individual who is most deserving of this award. A dedicated, driven person,
he is always more than happy to take on any challenge or duty. He is an
inspiring leader.”
Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ed Chance was
honored as the Citizen of the Year.
Past Chamber Chairman Nelda Blair, highlighting some of
Chance’s achievements, mentioned his part in groundbreaking for
the convention center, bond efforts, development of Rayford Road,
The Waterway development dedication, public safety unit in South
County, recycling center, traffic management center, and four community centers. Blair said Chance’s “leadership and bold thinking have
benefited the area.”
Janet Levesque, JC’s Chem-Dry, is The Chamber’s Diplomat of
the Year for the second consecutive year! She was honored because of
her dedication to The Chamber and her earning of the most points
through the Diplomat Team’s Point System.

Amber Sickafoose, 2011-2012 Diplomat Team Leader, said, “Being
named Diplomat of the Year is a very significant honor. Winning this
award takes time, effort, dedication, and the desire to lead by example.
It also takes doing the things no one else wants to do–day in and day
out. Janet did all of these things and became the perfect example and
role model of what a Diplomat should be!”
Outgoing Chairman Ann Snyder named Randy Lovelace, Paragon
Independent Insurance, for the Chairman’s Award. Ann said, “Randy
was Team Leader and M.C. for The Chairman’s Ball: The Chamber
goes Broadway Baby! Ann’s Musical Night. I could not think of a more
deserving person to receive this award this year. He volunteers so much
of his time at The Chamber… and in our community.”
New this year is the Legacy Award. This was given to Alex Sutton
and Tim Welbes, Co-Presidents of The Woodlands Development
Company. Tim said, “We accept this award on behalf of all the residents. I continue to say we’re not in the real estate business–we’re in the
community development business.”
The Chamber recognized team leaders, vice presidents and board
members for their service, as well as a number of businesses for their
10-, 15-, 20-, 25- and 30-year memberships.

Save the Date for The Woodlands CrawPHish Festival!
The Woodlands CrawPHish Festival is slated for Saturday, March
23, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., at Town Green Park. Be sure
to attend this popular event and enjoy Crawfish, Rudy’s BBQ, kids’
activities provided by The Woodlands Children’s Museum, Painting
with a Twist, and Raising Cane’s, live bands and dancing, tent decorating contest, and plenty of family fun and entertainment.
Painting with a Twist has hosted art contests for children ages 5 to
12. The final competition will be November 10th from 1:00 to 3:00
p.m. The first 25 children will paint for free. The winner’s artwork
will appear on the Festival t-shirt.
The Woodlands CrawPHish Festival is a community event
designed to increase awareness of Pulmonary Hypertension and The
Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professionals.

Ellis Appointed to Board
Past Chamber Chairman Byron Ellis was appointed to the Board
of Directors. He assumes the unexpired term of Angela Speight, who
is now working in Houston.
Byron said, “I am excited to have the opportunity to be able to
spend more time with The Chamber leaders, staff and our current
board of directors. I am honored to be a part of such a great organization during an exciting chapter in Montgomery County.”
A well-known financial educator, he has presented to 2,000 retirees
about investing safely and reducing taxes. For 20 years, he has counseled 500 investors on preserving assets and avoiding costly mistakes.
His weekly column about estate planning, retirement investing and
personal finance appears in The Courier and The Villager.
Byron appeared on Channel 11 to discuss planning for seniors. He
founded Montgomery County Economic Panel--prominent business leaders dedicated to navigating economic uncertainty.
He is a Certified Financial Planner,
requiring a 2-year course of study and passing six rigorous exams proving his knowledge of personal financial issues. He served
as Chairman of the Board for Leadership
Montgomery County, Event Chair for First
Night and Finance Chair for United Way.
Byron’s accomplishments have been recognized by top accolades from Barron’s
and Texas Monthly. He was inducted into

Ameriprise Financial Services’ Hall of Fame.

Our Spotlight Table Winner for the September Networking
Breakfast was the Montgomery County Food Bank. Its mission is to
assist hungry people in Montgomery County.
MCFB is a partner of the Houston Food Bank and a member of
Texas Food Bank Network and Feeding America. As a private nonprofit organization, the Food Bank collects and distributes more
than six million pounds of food annually to low-income children,
adults and seniors in Montgomery County. It serves an average of
37,000+ individuals monthly.
Sean-Michael Hazuda, Executive Director for the Food Bank, educated our members about working with schools in nourishing children
in our community who rely heavily on the school’s reduced or free
lunch programs for their meals. It is hard to believe there are children
in our community who go home hungry–and there are children who
look forward to Monday morning so they can return to school and
enjoy a free breakfast after not eating since Friday’s free lunch.
It is a hard truth that prompted school nurses to work alongside the Food Bank, identifying children in need and starting the
Backpack Buddy Program that equipped students with a backpack with seven meals to get them through the weekend. Every $1
donated allows the Food Bank to purchase seven pounds of food.

On the Edge of Possible
Education for Tomorrow Alliance has begun planning and
recruiting volunteers for the 2013 SCI://TECH Exposition
themed “On the Edge of Possible,” to be held throughout
Montgomery County January 25 through February 9, 2013. EfTA
partners with the Conroe Independent School District, as well as
The John Cooper School and a number of other private schools, to
engage local students in 13 science, math, and technology-related
competitions and events. Winners in the junior and senior high
science fair competitions qualify to advance to the Science and
Engineering Fair of Houston.
Dr. Susan Caffery, Headmaster of the Academy
of Science and Technology at The Woodlands
College Park High School, sees many of her
students challenge their analytical skills by
participating in multiple events. She said, “SCI://
TECH engages students in science through many
different avenues. From science fair, to robotics, to the Exposition,
students participate actively in hands-on learning. Science Fair
is an incredible opportunity for students to engage in research.
Doing research affords the student to not only develop academic
abilities and interests but also personal development. It gives the

At its first session, the LMC Class of 2013 explored Montgomery
County’s Quality of Life beginning at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell
Pavilion. The first speaker of their Leadership Development Series
was sponsored by Starzyk & Associates, P.C. Speaker Jay Strickland
spoke about the seven habits of highly effective people.
The day continued with a tour of The Pavilion followed by a bus
ride to the CISD Natatorium and Woodforest Bank Stadium. Their
tour guide was Conroe ISD Superintendent Dr. Don Stockton.
The class stopped at the Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag
Park and then on to the Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Area Chamber
of Commerce for lunch and a presentation about the county’s history.
The class went on a driving tour of the Conroe Industrial Park and
Technology Park, before heading to the Lone Star Executive Airport
where they were given the opportunity to go up in the airport tower
and view the apache helicopters. The day ended with a tour and presentation of the Lone Star Expo and Convention Center.

Each of the Expo competitions offers learning beyond the

event coordinators and judges. Education for Tomorrow Alliance
especially needs volunteers on Friday, February 2,
2013, to judge the junior and senior high science
fairs, and on Saturday, February 3, 2013, to assist
with Expo Day in which thousands of visitors
view live demonstrations and competitions at the
Lone Star Convention Center.
