his season, we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the University at Buffalo Center
for the Arts – one of our university’s most
powerful cultural resources and a community hub for innovative arts programming and
creative excellence that draws audiences from
across our region and far beyond. One of the
defining strengths of a major university is its ability to provide a space where new ideas, new concepts, and new forms of expression can be created,
experienced, debated, critiqued, and celebrated.
Over the past 15 years, the Center for the Arts has
embodied that mission, bringing some of the
world’s most dynamic performers, influential productions, and cutting-edge artists to UB and
Western New York.

we serve. We are firmly committed to public service and civic engagement both
regionally and globally. Our university’s rich tradition of innovation in the arts plays
a vital role in fostering creative partnerships, highlighting the far-reaching social
impact of our commitment to excellence.
This year, the Center continues to expand its reach and deepen its impact on campus and into our larger communities. For example, the Center’s new award-winning
Video Production group is helping UB engage current and new audiences by
enhancing communication about the University at Buffalo and its initiatives. The
Center also continues to build on its long history of creative collaborations and partnerships across the disciplines and beyond the university community. Recently, for
instance, the Center launched a multidisciplinary Arts in Healthcare initiative, integrating the visual, literary, and performing arts into healthcare settings to enhance
the healing environment for patients and caregivers throughout the region. This past
summer, the CFA collaborated with the University of Florida Center for the Arts in
Healthcare to hold an Arts in Healthcare Summer Intensive Training program for
students and professionals in the emerging arts in healthcare field.

Tickets –
In person: 15-minute parking spaces are marked and available on
Coventry Loop, in front of the Center. Cash and select credit cards are
accepted at the Box Office window.
You may fax your order 24 hours a day, call (716) 645-2787 during Box
Office hours to request a fax form.
By Mail: Mail order forms are available through the Box Office. Personal checks are accepted for mail orders only. Do not send cash.
At Ticketmaster: Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations,
Ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. The Center for the Arts maintains a no-refund policy.
Will Call: The Box Office (Will Call/Paid/ Reservations) opens one
hour before performances. Early ticket pickup for paid reservations
is permitted after 4 p.m. on the day of the performance. Proper identification (including credit card) is required for all prepaid tickets.
Late Arrivals: Late arrivals will not be seated until a suitable break in
the performance, or at the discretion of the ushers, and may not be
seated in the exact seating locations until intermission.
Parking: Parking is free after 3 p.m. and on weekends. Parking is
available in Slee Lot A and B, Baird Lot A and Jacob’s Lots B and C and
in the Arena Lot behind Alumni Arena.
Parking for persons with disabilities is available at various locations,
including spaces adjacent to Slee Hall and several spaces in Baird Lot
B. Additional spaces are reserved adjacent to Alumni Arena and in
the Arena Lot. Persons in wheelchairs have curb accessibility on
Coventry Circle in front of the Center For The Arts.
Group Sales: Group sale discounts are available for most performances. Please call Karen at (716) 645-6771 for more information.
Rules/Restrictions: All cameras and recording devices are prohibited. Please check cellular phones and pagers at the coat check and
leave your seat location with the attendant. Out of respect to the
performers and audience members, please do not allow these services to sound off. We would also greatly appreciate having wristwatch alarms turned off.
Emergencies: In case of emergency, contact the House Manager or
nearest usher.
Fire Notice: Please take a moment to locate the nearest emergency
exit. In the event of a fire or other emergency, remain calm and listen for directions via our public address system.
Smoking : UB’s smoke-free policy is in effect as of Aug. 1, with
smoking prohibited in buildings and on the grounds – including
green spaces –on the university’s three campuses. Until Aug. 1,
2010, smoking will be permitted in areas of parking lots that are
more than 100 feet from buildings.
Food and Beverages: Food and beverages are not allowed in the
theaters proper.
Concessions: Refreshments are available in the Atrium before and
during selected performances. This service is provided at bars
located outside the entrances to the main floor and balcony
lounge.
Coat Check: Coat check service is available in the center of the
lobby.
Patrons with Disabilities: The Center for the Arts is accessible to
people using wheelchairs or with restricted mobility. Tickets for
wheelchair locations must be requested at the time of the ticket
purchase. It is suggested that you arrive at the Center at least a
half-hour prior to show time. There is no elevator to the balcony.
Assistive Listening Devices are available free to audience members. These devices can be checked out at the coat check before
performances.
Discounts/Coupons: Discounts may be available for some performances. Please direct your inquiries for specific performances to
the box Office. Student discounts are available for most performances with valid student identification. Visit the CFA website for
more information www.ubcfa.org.
Public Telephone: Phones are located on the first floor, next to
Room 103.
Lost and Found: Any items found at the Center will be held at the
coat check during performances and at the Center Administrative
offices (Room 103) during the day. The Center assumes no responsibility for damage caused by the loss of the item. Items not
claimed within five days will be turned over to University Police.
Restrooms: Restrooms are located at the main floor level in the
Atrium. Patrons using wheelchairs are accommodated with accessibility on all restroom, as well as accessible drinking fountains, in
the Atrium. Additional restrooms are available in the lower level of
the Center and the balcony lounge of the Mainstage.
Children: Children will form the audiences of tomorrow, so we
enjoy having them in the Center today. Parents should exercise
their discretion in deciding what events their children will enjoy
(or call our Box Office for Program suggestions). Please remember,
regardless of age, everyone attending an event must have a ticket.
Children (Infants): We encourage parents to prepare their children for the live theater experience by explaining basic audience
etiquette to them. Parents of children talking, crying or moving
around in a manner that is distracting to other patrons may be
asked to move with their children to another location or to leave
the theatre. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by
an adult.

Chick Corea Bio
One of the most creatively restless and indefatigably imaginative artists in jazz, Chick Corea defies
categorization. He is equally at home in acoustic settings and in electric formats. He performs sublime
solo concerts and welcomes richly arranged collaborations with orchestras.
In the past two years, he has mounted two hugely successful world tours: first with a celebrated reprise
of Return to Forever’s classic quartet lineup; then with his electro-acoustic quintet with guitar legend
John McLaughlin, the Five Peace Band. Both projects resulted in adventurous live albums: Return to
Forever: Returns and Five Peace Band Live. Together, these tours reached beyond traditional jazz
listeners to an enthralled new base of music lovers.
He earned his 15th Grammy Award in 2008, for The New Crystal Silence, which celebrated the 35th
anniversary of his chamber jazz duo with vibraphonist Gary Burton. He has also explored new
collaborations, with banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck and Japanese pianist Hiromi.
In 2008, Corea was named Jazz Times’ Artist of the Year and Best Electric Keyboardist. He also won
the Downbeat Readers’ Poll as Best Electric Keyboardist/Synthesizer, and Swing Journal’s
International Jazzman of the Year.
Corea broke onto the jazz scene in the early 1960s, working with bands led by such stars as Mongo
Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Blue Mitchell, Herbie Mann and Stan Getz. One of his most significant
sideman gigs was with Miles Davis’ seminal electric fusion bands, from 1968-70, when he participated
in the classic album Bitches Brew. It was there that Corea first met and worked with John McLaughlin.
As a solo artist, Corea recorded his debut in 1966, Tones for Joan’s Bones, followed by what’s come to
be known as a classic jazz recording, 1968’s Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, with Miroslav Vitous and
Roy Haynes.
While Corea’s musical career teems with significant explorations and advances, one of his highlight
moments came in 1971 when he created Return to Forever, the legendary jazz-rock fusion band. While
it lasted just seven years in three different editions, RTF is heralded as one of the most important and
forward-looking bands in jazz history. In 2008, Corea assembled a reunion of the quartet version of the
band. It swept the world with a tour that was easily the most anticipated event of the year for jazz fans.
Celebrating the four partners in fusion revisiting their past material played in the present tense,
Downbeat ran a cover story on RTF, leading a multitude of national press, including the New York
Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and Newsweek.
When the tour ended in the summer of 2008, Corea was already revving up for his next musical
adventure, the Five Peace Band, a collective co-founded with fellow Davis alum John McLaughlin on
guitar. With Kenny Garrett on alto sax, Christian McBride on bass and either Vinnie Colaiuta or Brian
Blade in the drum chair, the quintet toured for almost a year, producing the widely praised doublealbum Five Peace Band Live.

Stanley Clarke Bio
As the first an only bassist for Return to Forever, Stanley Clarke stepped easily back into the band for
its enormously successful 2008 world tour. He followed that triumph with a bass trio tour, accompanied
by fellow legends Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten.
A multi-Grammy Award winner, Clarke garnered Bass Player Magazine’s Lifetime Achievement
Award in 2006.
When Clarke moved to New York in 1971 from his hometown of Philadelphia, he arrived at a time of
major flux in the jazz world. He started out playing acoustic bass with such marquee leaders as Pharoah
Sanders, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Gil Evans, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz. But the young vet of
R&B and rock bands in high school gravitated to a more expansive setting to seek beyond the jazz
mainstream. He and Chick Corea bonded in their mutual desire to reach larger audiences, and he joined
up with the keyboardist in his pioneering fusion band, Return to Forever, which is where his prowess
on both the acoustic and electric basses was established. Clarke stayed with the band throughout its
1971-77 history.
During this time, Clarke also vaulted into a leader role, recording several mid-’70s albums, including
his crossover gem, School Days (1976). Along with Jaco Pastorius, Clarke was acknowledged as one of
the most influential and creative electric bassists in jazz. Throughout the years, Clarke recorded funkand R&B-styled albums (including a collaboration with keyboardist George Duke in the urban musicoriented Clarke/Duke Project albums) as well as composed for television and film. He has recorded
film score albums as well as superb jazz outings, including 1988’s If This Bass Could Only Talk and
2007’s The Toys of Men.
Regarding the latter, which features music that reacts to the current chaotic state of war, Clarke said,
“Bruce Springsteen has the luxury to write words about his agony over the war, but my challenge is to
pull off the same effect instrumentally. I’m a film composer, and I write music to enhance the drama of
a story. I approached the opening suite like film, composing the music to be picturesque.” The album
also features solo acoustic bass tunes, about which Clarke said, “I recorded these in my dining room at
3 in the morning while my wife was sleeping. The acoustics are great because of the high ceiling and
the wood. I wanted the pieces to sound like when I practice, with the feet tapping included.”
Lenny White Bio
One of the great innovators of the modern drum set, Lenny White's sonic fingerprints are all over
modern jazz and funk—not many drummers can claim a first gig with Jackie McLean and a Top 10
R&B hit ten years later. The soulful edge and innovative approach he brought to Miles Davis' classic
Bitches Brew and Return to Forever defined the sound of fusion; his influence has only grown since
then, producing for stars like Chaka Khan and Nancy Wilson and earning a reputation as one of the
most respected bandleaders and producers in any genre.
Born in New York City, drummer Lenny White entered the jazz major leagues in 1968 in saxophonist
Jackie McLean’s band. In 1969 Davis enlisted him to participate in the groundbreaking Bitches Brew
project, and the next year he was in the drum seat for Freddie Hubbard’s classic Red Clay album. White
joined the group Azteca in 1972 but let that job slide when he joined the second edition of Return to
Forever the same year.
His funkified drum style energized the quartet, helping to define the RTF sound of that period. The All
Music Guide says, “As a member of Return to Forever, White gained a strong reputation as one of the
top fusion drummers, but he was always versatile enough to play in many settings.”
After leaving RTF in 1976, White delved into other fusion and funk projects. His debut solo outing was
1976’s Venusian Summer followed by Big City for the Nemperor imprint (Atlantic Records). He was
signed by Elektra in 1978, which resulted in a string of albums, including Best of Friends in 1978.
White worked in various groups, including Twennynine (which he founded) and the Jamaica Boys, as
well as in such all-star bands as Echoes of an Era and Griffith Park.

The idea of an alumni dance concert was first conceived as a response to the funding crunch,
which directly affected our annual dance residencies. With full support of the CFA staff, who
refused to see the dance residencies at UB come to an end, an invitation to come Back to Buffalo
was sent in the form of an “SOS” to some of our most prominent professional alumni.
Communicating with the alumni through text messages, email, Facebook and phone conversations, the response was overwhelming:

am honored to be a part of this - I will do my best to be there; I would be honored to be

Cesar G. Salinas (Giordano Jazz
Dance Chicago) - Cesar graduated from UB with a BFA in
Dance. He received a scholarship at the Giordano Dance
School in the summers of 2004
and 2005, and after graduation
joined Giordano II. Cesar is also
a faculty member at Giordano Dance School,
where he teaches youth and teen/adult level
classes. He is a mentor and group leader for the
Giordano Green Group. He is also part of
GJDC’s educational outreach, teaching jazz
dance to fifth-grade students in underserved
public schools.

has been an apprentice with the

teacher, joining the faculty of several dance
education organizations including Dance

He is an eight-time winner of Buffalo, NY’s
Battle at Buffalo and has received acclaim as a
Hip-Hop and Funk Styles dancer, teacher, and

Director of the Zodiaque Studio Dance Ensemble.
She has been actively teaching and choreographing for over 30 years and is the owner and director of DANCENTRAL, a private dance studio
formed in 1987. She is the Artistic Director for
the “Elizabeth P. Webb Dance Foundation”, a
non-profit organization which funds dance related activities for qualified Western New York
dancers. She has taught for Dance Masters of
America, Chicago National Dance Association
and is a United States Gymnastic Federation Skill
Evaluator.

Barrage
A high-octane fiddle-fest that features an
international, multi-talented cast performing
an eclectic mix of music, song and dance.
In an electrifying tribute to the versatility of
the violin, Barrage’s virtuoso performers,
including Percussion, Bass and Guitar - offer
up a diverse fusion of musical styles with
incredible energy. Think of it as “Stomp” meets
“Riverdance” with an added kick of its own!
The talented international cast performs an
eclectic mix of music and dance with something for everyone, from Celtic jigs to classical,
Latin to Blue Grass. While there are plenty of
ensemble numbers, Barrage also features the
performers as soloists, in trios and as “Dueling
Fiddlers!” The elaborately choreographed
show includes whirling dancing set to infectious rhythms that energize audiences start to
finish.
Animado means “lively” in Spanish and serves
as the name for Barrage’s latest show. It pulls
its influences from the music and dance styles
of Old World Europe. Spanish, Celtic, Italian,
French, Russian and Ukrainian styles are the
ingredients for “Ainimado!”
The concept for Barrage began when some
violin teachers and players from Calgary,
Canada were looking to create an outlet for
exploring repertoire and performance styles.
After performing locally for many years, the
troupe went professional in 1996. Since then,
Barrage has entertained millions of people
around the globe; they have been featured in
television specials on several international networks, including PBS in the United States, the
BBC in the United Kingdom and CBC in
Canada.

Jason Hurwitz (Violin/Octave Violin/Vocals)
- Jason first realised he wanted to take up the
violin after seeing Izhak Perlman play for
Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street. Being age
5 meant he was a perfect candidate for the
Suzuki Method. Recently Jason graduated
from the University of Miami with a degree in
Music Education and could be seen, during
the summer months, at Hershey Park performing in the bluegrass/country cover band,
Sonic Roots. Five years ago, Jason was watching Barrage from the audience. Now he has
realised his life’s dream by taking to the stage
as a Barrage violinist.
Kristina Bauch (Violin/Vocals/Tin Whistle) Kristina has loved both dancing and playing
violin since she was three years old. She is
familiar with many forms of dance including
ballet, tap, jazz, and flamenco. Kristina has
also worked as a choreographer for Winnipeg’s
“Little Opera Company”, and several highschool musicals. In the year 2000, she won a
position with the Winnipeg Symphony
Orchestra, where she stayed for two years
before going back to school to study at the
Institute of Chamber Music in Milwaukee
under the direction of Myron Kartman. Since
graduating in May of 2004, Kristina has performed here in Calgary in “Gypsies, Jocks and
Divas”, Rainbow Stage’s Beauty and the Beast,
Winnipeg Symphony’s New Music Festival,
and with Rod Stewart.
Annette Homann
(Violin/Vocals) Originally from Hanover, Germany, Annette is
an alumnus from Manhattan School of Music.
Annette graduated in December 2006 with a
Masters Degree in classical violin performance. Since being out of school Annette has
performed with many ensembles: the New
England Symphonic Ensemble, NY Chamber
Players and performed regularly with the
TACTUS ensemble, an ensemble for contemporary Music, playing at Merkin Hall,
Whitney Museum in New York. Since moving
to New York, she also discovered her passion
for improvisation performing regularly with
the Coco Brothers.
Kiana Weber (Violin / Vocals) - Kiana joins
Barrage after completing her second year of
studies at University of Michigan in Ann
Arbor, MI. She has been a featured fiddler and
singer in the Chelsea House Orchestra and has
performed with Charlene Kaye as a back up

performance groups Fior and Daughters of
Newgrass and in her spare time enjoys composing and writing her own music.
Charles Bullough (Drum Kit) journey with
Barrage started in 2000 after he graduated
from the Music program at Grant MacEwan
College in Edmonton Alberta. After taking a
hiatus in 2003 to live in Montreal for a year,
Charles is happy to be back performing with
the group and has learned more about the violin than he could have ever imagined! Some of
his greatest influences include Tony Williams,
John Bonham, and Danny Carey.
Tim Harley (Bass Guitar) Tim has been playing bass for 10 years, and has played with
Barrage for the last 4 of those years. Tim has
participated in studio session work in and outside of Barrage. His latest endeavors include
playing on former Barrage guitarist Aaron
Young’s latest self titled jazz album, (spazzjazz.com) as well as former Barrage fiddler
Denis Dufresne’s new age bluegrass album,
(denisdufresne.com).Tim has also played in
many groups including a punk rock band
called “ Belvedere,” and also studied jazz at
Mount Royal College in Calgary. Tim looks
forward to all of life’s continuing twists and-
turns and the beautiful pursuit of the groove.
Who.
Hidayat Honari (Guitars) is a graduate of the
Jazz Studies program at Capilano College in
Vancouver, British Columbia. He has been
active in the World Music scene mainly performing originally composed Persian, Arabic
and Indian fusion music on the Tar - an
Iranian lute.
Taylor Morris (Violin/Vocals) an Arizona
native, violinist Taylor Morris graduated from
Barrett, the Honors College, at Arizona State
University. Obtaining a degree in Violin
Performance with minors in Biology and
Political Science, he studied violin with Dr.
Katie McLin and was also a four-year member
of the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras.
Taylor has performed in master classes for
Peter Zazofsky, Serena Canin, and Thomas
Landschoot, as well as the Juilliard, St.
Lawrence, and Brentano String Quartets. First
exposed to fiddling in seventh grade while in
the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Taylor
quickly found himself competing in state-wide
fiddling competitions where he twice received
the “Audience’s Favorite Fiddler” award.

SAME SPIRIT DIFFERENT MOVEMENT is Illstyle and Peace Productions’ newest evening length
work. Through peace, love and unity, the piece celebrates the art form of dance and movement. It is
a collaborative effort that brings various dance styles together in spirit while defining each movement
as distinctive. Although the performers move in their own ways, they share the same spirit of dance,
the unity of movement which Brandon identifies as the spirit of God. The production includes vocal
percussions, turntablism, spoken word, popping, locking, breaking, tap dancing, DJing, house,
Human BeatBoxing and various other styles.
ILLSTYLE & PEACE PRODUCTIONS is a dance-theatre company based in Philadelphia, PA, whose
work fuses the moves and spirit of hip-hop with various other styles of dance. Founded in 2002, the
company’s mission is to create awe inspiring works with diverse audiences worldwide, and to spread
unity, peace, love, respect, and fun through dance.

BRANDON ALBRIGHT a.k.a “Peace” is the
Artistic Director of Illstyle & Peace
Productions.
He is well versed in the various styles of hip hop dance. His style brings a lot of energy to
the stage and presents a cogent voice in theater. Brandon lives, eats, and breathes hip hop as a dancer, recording artist, dance
instructor, choreographer & actor. Intrigued
by the universality of hip - hop, he seeks inspiration from other dance forms and arts as
well. He was an original member of the Philly
based crew Scanner Boyz. He has danced for
major recording artists such as Schooly D,
Will Smith, Tuff Crew, Boyz II Men, LL Cool
J, Run DMC and the Beach Boys. Brandon
“peace” Albright used to be the Assistant
Artistic Director of the internationally
acclaimed Rennie Harris Puremovement with
whom he has toured nationally & internationally in Rome & Jewels and Hip Hop Legends.
Other productions Brandon has performed
with are the NAACP Image Awards, Cool
Heat Urban Beat, Memphis Ballet and Dance
Africa to name a few.
With Illstyle & Peace Productions, Brandon
continues to share his dance ministry with
diverse audiences. Same Spirit Different
Movement, the most recent work he has choreographed for the company, has been touring
nationally to critical acclaim and will be performed in Poland, Russia and Canada during
the 2006/2007 season. Look out for tHiNgS

ANOINTED S: Straight out of the Bronx,
New York, 18 year old beat box champ
Anointed S Baffles beat box legions and
crowds alike with his alluring percussive
rhythms. Pushing the boundaries of noise and
sound, Anointed S manufactures these syncopated rhythms direct and precisely. He has
toured America and Canada with Alicia Keys
and won numerous championships around
the world and has also been hailed as one of
the youngest & best beat boxers. His goals are
to innovate beat & sound and to try and take
vocal percussion to levels no has ever thought
it can reach...as he gives respect to Jesus
Christ.
JEFFREY COUSAR a.k.a. Abrahim Mustafa
a “leap of faith” performer who once entertained children as a magician and storyteller
graces the stage now with spoken word-rap,

PHILLIP S. CUTTINO JR, A.K.A X-CLUSIVE! Born in Detroit MI is now a North
Philadelphia native who went to college as a
visual art major. Phil is a talented performer
and entertainer and was a core member of the
Philadelphia crew called the ( X-Men ). Now
working with Illstyle & Peace Productions he
hopes to be a inspirational influence on people all over the world.
DAMON HOLLEY a.k.a “Dink the Clown” is
also a core member of K.R.S. Entertainment
and his passion for dance speaks every time
he hits the stage! Damon has performed
worldwide and is one of Illstyle & Peace
Productions high energy dancers and the
“Lead Captain” of the I&P Goonies. While
being committed to dancing with Illstyle &
Peace spreading the message of Peace, Love &
Unity, Damon’s goal is to do broadway one
day.
INDIA HYMAN, a.k.a Ingine is a professional dancer and dance instructor. Born in NJ
India Hyman has performed on stages and in
schools across the world with Face tha Flav.
India has her own dance workshops and is a
inspiring dance teacher at the Atrium Dance
Studio, The Sandy School of Dance and many
more community centers through out NJ.
JOSEPH INGRAM a.k.a “Liquid” has been
one of Philadelphia’s up and coming “BEST”
poppers. Joseph is a core member of K.R.S.
Entertainment. He dances and entertains
crowds in Philadelphia throughout places like
Unity Day, Odunda, The stop the violence,
Say no to drugs tour, and much more. Joseph
was the 2007 “First Draft” pick last year of
Illstyle & Peace Productions and will continue
to tour nationally and internationally with
Illstyle & Peace spreading the message of
Peace, Love & Unity!
MARTY MILAN was born in the year of the
horse under the stars and planets of the virgo.
Along the path that his life has taken him, he
has passed through Temple University earning a B.F.A. in choreography and dance.
Temple being the choice because Philadelphia
is his home town. He has danced around
Philly intermingling with the modern (contemporary) and hip hop crowd. Also, he has
had the pleasure to dance with artists like
Sean Curran, and Melanie Stewart, as well as,
Grace Mi-He Lee, Michael Keeler, Jeff Prall,
and Chosen Dance Company. He can currently be found on the bar/batmitzvah scene

JASON ANTHONY POLEON aka “The
Lionrock - J-Spin” grew up in Vineland, New
Jersey. J-Spin came up as a skateboarder and
was sponsored by such companies as Screw
Skateboards and Super V Skate Shop. He
started dancing at raves in Philadelphia where
he met a dancer named James “Cricket”
Colter. Cricket inspired him to become a better dancer and later took J-Spin under his
wing. J-Spin is known for his blending of
styles such as Hip-Hop, B-Boying, House, and
Capoeira. He hopes to further his dancing in
Rennie Harris Puremovement and Illstyle and
Peace Productions.
DARRIN M. ROSS (Technical Director /
Sound /Video Designer / Composer)- Ross
has been working in music since 1985 with
Jam On Productions. He has recently completed the score and sound design for Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theater’s Love Stories
and Reminiscin along with Suzan Lori Parks
TopDog/Underdog. He is also the recipient of
a 2001 New York Dance & Performance
Award (BESSIE) for his music composition
for Rome & Jewels. Mr. Ross has worked with
and established many artists in the industry
such as Freeway, PM Dawn, Newcleus, Tuff
Crew, Doug E. Fresh, King Britt, ZHANE,
Jungle Brothers, Kim Waters, Todd Terry, The
Roots, Bahamadia, Dee Dee Sharp Gamble,
No Question, Az Yet, Victor Duplaix, Bowser,
Rampage, Grisha Coleman, Philip Hamilton,
Leon Evans, and more. In 1992, he formed
I.Q. Records and is now directing his own
production company, Kitinay Productions
Inc. In 1990 he CO-produced television segments for “Dance Party USA” and “1 House
Street,” This lead to scoring and composition
efforts for works set on Pennsylvania Ballet,
Memphis Ballet and the Colorado Ballet and
various movies. In 1997, Mr. Ross received
Philly’s Street Buzz Producer of the Year
Award. Ross is currently completing his solo
album project, CO-producing and scoring the
play “Big Girls Need Love Too” as well as composing for the PBS Documentary Alvin Ailey”

film and dance companies. His sound design

DARRYL SCOTT (Singer) Darryl Scott hails
from New Jersey and has six siblings. He has
been singing and preaching for fifteen years
throughout the US and now considers himself
as a minister of music. His first CD will be
released within the next couple of months.
Darryl has done many lead singing shows and
background singing for various groups &
churches. He will be part of the upcoming
Illstyle & Peace Productions’ first play entitled
“ThInGs HaPpEn”. He is now working on his
own play which will also be produced by
Illstyle & Peace Productions.
DJ SPARKLE(S) is a battle tested turntablist
who has radio experience on all levels as well
as local and national television appearances.
She has made many appearances on BET,
winning DJ Battles at both the BET College
Day at Kings Dominion and BET Spring Bling
DJ Battle at Daytona Beach. These appearances were followed up by two guest D.J. spots
on BET’s Rap City and an appearance on 106
=
and Park. In 2005 and 2006, she won the
“She’s My D.J. Battle” at S.O.B.’s in Manhattan.
D.J. Sparkle(s) also finished 3rd, at the world
renowned D.M.C.’s in Boston and New York
in 2006. D.J. Sparkle(s) is determined...her
influences and experiences have been many,
as she strives forward, managing her own
business, Jill of All Trades Entertainment
Group. Seizing the opportunities created by
hip-hop entertainment and its target audiences, D.J. Sparkle(s) is following her destiny
as she continues to build her name and influence.
EMIKO SUGIYAMA (Energetic Motion In
Kinetic One) Began dancing at the age of 7 in
Japan. She was trained in ballet for 10 years
but eventually stopped and came to the U.S. to
study physical therapy at UC Davis. At this
time she met Michael Cagly a hip hop teacher
who introduced her into breaking. Emiko
Soon became a member of “Flexible Flave”
crew and traveled to battle other crews in NY,
AZ, and TX. In 2001 Emiko moved to LA to
be a professional dancer. She trained ballet,
jazz, hip hop, and modern at the Edge, millennium dance complex, and Zeal studios at the
time. Also, She joined the hip hop dance company called “One Step Ahead”. After Emiko

FORREST WEBB aka “Getemgump” started
dancing in the early 1980’s. He was inspired by
his Jr. high school friends as well as most of
the popular b-boy crews who were pioneering
the scene in New York City. In 1996 he co-
founded the b-boy dance troupe Illstyle
Rockers and recently collaborated with
Brandon Albright to form Illstyle & Peace
Productions. Forrest has toured nationally
and internationally as a dancer with productions such as Rennie Harris Puremovent’s
Rome & Jewels and Hip-Hop Legends. Other
dance productions include Cool Heat Urban
Beat (Boston Dance Umbrella), Caravane
(Urban Tap), Hit the Breaks (FSB
Productions), Hip-Hop Culture Connection:
From NY to Paris (Junior & Sydney, Paris
France), An Evening of Tap and Hip-Hop
(Illstyle Rockers/Cleveland Public Theater),

Besides dancing, Forrest is an actor who performs on-camera and on-stage. He performed

The 2009-10
M&T Bank Dance Series
has all the right moves
The Center for the Arts is regarded as Western New York’s premier presenter of
dance, and this season’s schedule is particularly diverse and exciting.
The M&T Bank Dance Series begins on October 9 with the multicultural mixed gender dance company Illstyle and Peace Productions. The work of this group focuses
on the movement and spirit of old school hip-hop, especially as it relates to various
other dance styles. Illstyle and Peace Productions seeks to deliver a message about
the importance of individual expression to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Their current work, Same Spirit Different Movement, celebrates the art and movement of hip hop with a blend that includes locking, popping, breaking, tap and
house dancing, vocal percussions and DJing. This piece attempts to portray the similarities between hip hop steps and those in ballet, modern and traditional dance
forms.
Led by Artistic Director Tina Ramirez, Ballet Hispanico takes the stage on October
17. Captivating audiences with their
lively choreography and alluring energy, the 13 member group performs
work by both established Latin choreographers, as well as emerging artists.
Driven by passion, Ballet Hispanico
blends Latin dance with elements of
classical and contemporary forms.
Over 77 pieces have been commissioned for this group.
With founding members from such
established groups as The Chieftans,
Bowfire, and Seven Nations, The
StepCrew is a twelve member troupe
with seven dancers, a four piece band
and a female vocalist that will make its
way to the Center on November 4.
The New International dance production features the world’s top talents in
Irish Step, Ottawa Valley, and Modern Ballet Hispanico – October 17
Tap, as well as Fiddling. The cast of
seven dancers transitions through traditional classics, modern interpretations of
Celtic dance and electrifying new compositions.

On February 23, 2010 the Israel Ballet, the only company in Israel that performs
the great classical and neo-classical ballets of the international repertoire, comes to
the Center. In 1975, famed choreographer George Balanchine granted the Israel
Ballet permission to perform his ballet Serenade, and six years later he granted them
full permission to perform all
his works free of charge. The
company presents a rich and
varied repertoire that includes
great classical and modern full
length ballets in addition to
original works and remains
under the artistic direction of
Berta Yampolsky and Hillel
Markman, who founded the
company in 1967.
Performing and teaching both
nationally and internationally,
Jump Rhythm Jazz Project will The Israel Ballet – February 23
participate in the Center for the Arts’ annual dance residency outreach program,
which will culminate with a performance on March 19. Founded by Billy Siegenfeld
in New York City in 1990, the group is now based in Chicago. Their style, known as
the Jump Rhythm Jazz Technique, is taught by the eight dancer ensemble both in
Chicago, as well as on tour. Their high energy performances, classes and workshops
have earned this group well-deserved fame and each JRJP member individually
serves as resident guest teachers and choreographers in Chicago’s high schools and
dance studios, as well as in universities across the country.
Following JRJP is the Moscow Festival Ballet’s performance of Pyotr Illyich
Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake on March 23. Led by Sergei Radchenko the company
brings together the highest classical elements of the great
Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies within the framework of
Russian Classical Ballet.
Completing the series will be the
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet on April
21. Founded in 1996 by Bebe
Schweppe, the company expanded from its base in Aspen,
Colorado to Santa Fe, New
Mexico in 2000. Eclectic and
entertaining, the ASFB’s repertoire is both sophisticated and

entertaining and the company is
committed to commissioning new work by today’s prominent choreographers. ASFB
serves as both a gathering place for the world’s premium dancers and choreographers, as well as one of the top presenters of dance performances in the country.

Daniel “Boone” Enser believes
he could not have chosen a better time to join the staff at
Center for the Arts. When he
helped create the Video
Production group two years
ago, UB and its leadership were
seeking more visibility on the
national and international
stage, and there was a growing
need to tell the UB story. As
Director of Media, Enser and
his team develop university
marketing videos, television
programs, documentaries, and
athletics programming, all
designed to help UB take its
message to a wider audience.
“When I first arrived six years ago, Executive Director Tom Burrows had a
vision to fill a need for video production at the University as well as produce
television directly out of the Center” Enser explained. “The first project we
wanted to do was an informational video about the Center. It wasn’t cost
effective to have an outside agency produce it, so the Center invested in
video gear and we produced it ourselves. After that project, we developed a
television series called “Music Is Art” producing almost 50 episodes and
winning multiple Telly awards. The series still runs statewide on
Thinkbright-TV. When the Dalai Lama came to campus, thirty thousand
people came to hear his speech at the football stadium and we ran the video
projection on the big screens. We also videotaped his entire three-day visit

and produced a documentary on the Tibetan monks who were in residence
at the Center during his visit. At that point we brought producer Regina
Ticco onboard. Anyone can operate a camera and anyone can jump on a
computer. The difference is that our staff brings a professional background
and an ability to tell stories.”
For Enser, known since childhood as “Boone,” there is not a pool of experience to draw from but more of a wellspring. After high school, he worked
as an intern at WGRZ Channel 2 before moving into a part time position at
the station. Boone’s first big break came when his boss had a break of his
own - unfortunately his femur. In a pinch, the station called upon the 19year-old to direct and Boone did his first live newscast. After that he
worked at numerous broadcast outlets including the Golf Channel, ESPN,
CBS Sports, USA Network, Disney Channel, ABC, ABC Family and
Nickelodeon. After living in several warm weather cities, Boone and his
wife Jamie decided to come back to Buffalo and raise their two little girls.
In his six years at the Center for the Arts, Boone and his staff have created
projects for many departments and groups on campus, and partnered with
university leadership in communicating the UB 2020 message. “We produce
videos for the President’s annual address and other events that reach out to
the community. We produced a highlight film for UB’s champion football
team, editing down two hundred hours of footage from our “Bullseye” television series, and it turned out fantastic. Last year, the Center for the Arts
started a great new program training artists to work in local hospitals, and
our videos have helped with promotion and funding. We also do commercials for UB groups, and completed marketing videos for the pharmacy and
engineering schools as well as the College of Arts and Sciences.”
Several projects have also had a national impact. “We recently completed a
school safety video for the Secret Service where we staged and recorded an
incident of school violence. It’s something that might help saves lives,” Enser
explained.
While Boone has found great individual success in the industry as well as at
the Center for the Arts, he still embraces the collaborative, creative process.
“I’m just one member of a team,” Enser said. “You need people with different talents working together to create success. That’s what I see happening
at UB. It’s not often that a university seeks to change the landscape of an
entire region. Whether it’s Tom Burrows or President Simpson, leaders with
vision are few and far between. Working at the Center gives me a chance to
contribute to that vision.”

Founded in 1965 by Maris Battaglia, The American Academy of Ballet will once
again continue a holiday tradition by presenting The Nutcracker at the Center for
