TKS Swim Meet

Teachers
Over the last six weeks a group of Grade 1 and
Grade 2 students have been attending a paper
making after-school activity. Using a simple kit,
with hand-held moulds, screens, sponges and a
liquidizer to make paper pulp, the students have
become proficient makers of paper from recycled
materials.

The students made paper of various colors, even adding glitter and
sometimes dried flowers which they had carefully picked from the
school gardens. By the end of the sessions, the students had created
a small booklet to take home.
Now they want to put this new skill into practice during the summer
holidays – watch out Mums and Dads – paper making can be messy,
but lots of fun!

Photography Field Trip to King Abdullah Grand
Mosque

The King Abdullah Grand Mosque proudly stands in the center of the KAUST Community, its
ornate domes and minarets serving as a focal point for our township.
On Wednesday 13 May 2015 the Gardens Secondary School Photography Enrichment students had the unique experience of
receiving a personal tour of this iconic building from the Mosque’s Imam, Ahmad Showail; CIC Representatives Ahmed Abuzaid
and Nahed Hallak also accompanied the group.
The students were given a twenty minute guided tour of the Mosque, including the women’s praying area, with historic and
religious context provided by Showail. After the tour, students had the opportunity to photograph both the interior and the
exterior of the Mosque. The large windows and intricate patterns in the carpet, pillars, and ceiling provided wonderful
opportunities for architectural and portrait photography inside the Mosque, while the arches and exterior features provided
similar opportunities outside.

Under the Sea

The Grade 10 students at Gardens Secondary School recently had an incredible opportunity,
as part of their Physical and Health Education program, to SCUBA dive and earn their PADI
certification.
The course began in the classroom learning the science of diving, environmental
considerations, safety and underwater communication – following this, skills were learned
and practiced in the swimming pool. The final part of the program was to perform all the
skills learned in the Red Sea.
The students enjoyed spending time together under the water – on surfacing, we had the
pleasure of a visit from a pod of about twenty dolphins. Being under the water was a
highlight, but even being on the boat had its good points – on our way to the reef, we saw
whale sharks in the distance!
What an awesome experience overall!
Putting Passion into Action

Some Grade 2 students have been working hard to keep their self-directed group going, which started in the classroom when
the students were doing a Unit of Inquiry, “Organizations within Communities”. Guided by their passion, three students in Class
2NN (Martim, Nitin and Haroun) collaborated on forming a basketball group – they planned the days and time they were going
to play and put a sign-up sheet for other students who may want to join the group.
Martim knew that his father, Mr. João Cúrdia has basketball skills so he asked him to be the team coach. But this did not stop
on paper – the students took action and turned up for the practice twice a week after school.
Thank you to Mr. João Cúrdia who has been their coach since February and, he says, has had a great experience, “All of the
students have achieved a lot in a short period of time. They now understand how to play as a team, they are learning basic
basketball properly. But they are also learning how to make unselfish moves, the basic rules and how to pass and shoot the ball
by passing the ball to a team member. I am also learning a lot from them and it is very enriching for me to see that a mixture of
cultures and nationalities can happily strive together in harmony and towards common goals! And this makes me believe that
these students will be able to build a better world!”

Arts Week in K3

From Sunday 10 May 2015 it was TKS Arts Week and K3 celebrated
the Arts all week long! Each day the children were treated to
different artists and were encouraged to create their own pieces of
art in the styles of Picasso, Monet, Matisse, etc.
The children also took part in an art competition using just a cutout circle as a starting point and got to practice being a good
audience while seeing performances from people in the KAUST
community. A big thank you to Hannele who performed a Korean
Fan Dance, the TKS Glee Club, Dylan Finol, Megan Lees, Colin
Herrington and Leesa Tulley who shared their musical talents with
us.
On Wednesday 13 May 2015, we had our own K3 Talent Show.
Twenty K3 students displayed a variety of talents including singing,
dancing, poetry, playing piano and much more.
Finally, on Thursday 14 May, one of KAUST’s very own artists –
Keithia – came to ECC to talk to our K3 learners and inspired them
to make some of their own art. Keithia’s specialty is creating art
using scraps materials and the students spent some time on
Thursday creating their own scrap art. Thank you Keithia for
visiting and inspiring us!
All week long, there was artwork made by parents of our students
displayed in the ECC foyer and outside we set up a music and art
area for the kids to explore and create. Also, we made a large K3
mural in Art class in which each child participated.
Along with all of this, we listened to different styles of music each
morning.
It was a busy week full of artistic fun!

Girls U14 Basketball Season

The U14 basketball season has just concluded. It was a five week period of hard work
and determination. On Sunday 12 April 2015, the season started for all students.
Ever since then we have been representing TKS as the U14 Lady Sharks. Each week
we had to make a weekly video to show that our hard work and determination did
not stop after we left the court.
We enjoyed making these videos, either individually or in a group, because they were a lot of fun and were beneficial to us and
the coaches. We worked so hard and practiced a lot for the upcoming tournament which took place on Saturday 16 May in the
TKS gym. The basketball team was split into two teams, TKS blue and TKS white. We played against six schools also with their
team split in half. The other schools were the American International School of Jeddah (AISJ), the British International School of
Jeddah (BISJ), Yanbu International School (YIS), Jeddah Prep and Grammar School (JPGS), Jeddah Knowledge School (JKS), and
the World Academy. Both teams were very successful with TKS blue winning three out of the possible five games and TKS white
winning all five of their games. Each and every person in the team was needed in order to have such a successful tournament.
Here are a few words to represent each member of the basketball team to recognize the skills and talents of everyone on the
team.

I think it is also very important to recognize the coaches, Coach Marwah and Coach McQuaid. Without them, none of this
amazing experience would have ever happened.

Coach Marwah is a great coach, amazing at basketball but also very nice and funny. A bonus to
Coach Marwah is that a lot of us share a great love with her – McDonalds.
Coach McQuaid
Coach McQuaid is also a great coach – positive and very funny. She surely made the basketball
experience a lot more fun and did an amazing job coaching the undefeated TKS White Team.
As you can see, everyone in the basketball team is needed to make the team successful. I strongly recommend the basketball
team to people who are between beginner and Intermediate players. It is a lot of fun and I know for sure that I have made
some really close friends.

TKS Movement

The TKS Movement Team was a new venture this year put forth by Lisa Pongpiriyaporn
(Grade 1 support teacher) and myself (Grade 5 classroom teacher). Ms. Lisa and I worked
with some of the students last year exploring ballet and hip hop but we had yet to become
one entity and note ourselves as being part of a team.
The TKS Movement team was born early this year as BISJ invited
us to a ‘Star Showcase’ to show off our performances. The
opportunity to showcase their skills was a very wonderful
experience and one where we had to combine forces to achieve
ultimate success.
Students came at first recess, lunch time and after school to
learn their performances and practiced, practiced,
practiced! We were very lucky to have worked with so many
enthusiastic performers – fifty one of them to be exact! The
Gardens Elementary and Gardens Secondary School
population were both represented strongly with Leesa and
Amy Tulley being involved in choreographing and helping
make the team a success.
In the end, TKS brought down eight performances ranging from ballet to hip hop. It was held on Saturday 9 May 2015 at BISJ
and we also had parents and volunteers from KAUST who went down to support. We would like to thank Mr. Ikihele, Mr. Naoufal
and Mr. Herrington for their support and the parents for all of their positive words and commitment.
Lastly, we would like to say that we are SO PROUD of the whole TKS Movement Tea and we cannot wait to work with all of you
again next year! New members welcome to join, and more information will be available in September.
TKS Immunization Requirements
Immunizations are one of the best, most cost-effective ways to prevent dangerous diseases.
The KAUST School requires that all students comply with the school’s published immunization
program, based on the Saudi Ministry of Health requirements.
Even if your child was up to date with vaccines on admission, he or she may now need further vaccines, especially if going into
K3 next year. If your child did not receive the currently recommended vaccinations on admission, or was in the process of
receiving a series of vaccines at the time of admission, then the Health Office may still require further proof of immunization.
Students who are not up to date with immunizations will not be able to attend class until the School Nurse has received proof
that the student has had all required vaccines.
If you have any questions about what vaccines your child is due, please do not hesitate to contact the Health Office. Search
