The 26th Annual Suncoast Silver Circle Awards were held on Sunday night, May 4, 2014 as a formal banquet and presentation
at the Renaissance Ft. Lauderdale Cruise Port Hotel.
The Silver Circle is awarded to distinguished individuals who have contributed a quarter of a century or more of exemplary
excellence to the television industry, a significant part of which was done in South Florida.

CHAPTER NEWS SEVEN SOUTH FLORIDA COLLEGE STUDENTS
RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIP FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
The Suncoast Chapter Scholarship Committee under the direction of Scholarship Chairman Angela Ramos who is Programming
and Public Affairs Director at WLTV Univision 23 in Miami interviewed South Florida college students of Broadcasting and
Television on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Seven students were awarded scholarship assistance.

Sevora Bivins in the mother of three children and grandmother of one granddaughter. She is a full
time sophomore student at the Miami Dade College School of Entertainment & Design Technology.
She has experience in advanced editing, television production, visual communication and motion
graphics.

Anayvette Cruz is studying for a degree in Radio & Television Broadcasting. She is a firm believer in
working where your passion is. Here motivation and drive are her parents. When she sees her parents
and realizes how much they have struggled and achieved, she knows she wants to do better for them.
Something her parents have taught her is to always keep going no matter what obstacle she confronts.

Miami Dade College
Denise De La Vega is a director, writer and editor attending Miami Dade College. She has just recently
been invited into the Golden Key Honor Society. Her dream is to someday have one of her feaures or
documentaries screened at the Miami International Film Festival. Denise spends her summers teaching
kids and teens how to make short films, radio shows and stop motion animation videos at Miami
Dade College’s School of Community Education.

Kelly R. Merrill Jr.
Barry University
Kelly R. Merrill Jr. is a sophomore at Barry University, double majoring in Broadcast and Emerging
Media and Mathematical Sciences. Being the oldest child of six, Kelly is a role model who constantly
exhibits positive qualities. He is a member of Sigma Alpha Pi Honors Society and Delta Epsilon Iota
Honors Society.

Miami Dade College
David Ramos is a sophomore at Miami Dade College. He is a senator within the Wolfson Student
Government Association and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa. David is the recipient of the
Bob Behrens Scholarship Fund.

Miami Dade College
Jesus Silva is a Venezuelan/American mass communication student and underground recording artist.
His family fled Venezuela in 2008 and moved to Panama. He won the “Star Project” in 2010, which was
similar to the U.S. version of American Idol. That experience opened a lot of doors for Jesus and he
decided to move to Miami to pursue a degree in Mass Communication and be able to gain the
knowledge he needs in order to overcome the oppression imposed by the government in Venezuela
and fight for those who can’t make themselves heard.

Miami Dade College
Anzela Vanegas is studying Journalism at Miami Dade College. What motivates Anzela to become a
journalist is her strong communication skills, even with differences in language, religion and culture.
She feels the biggest right we have is “Freedom of Speech” and for that reason she chose to become
a journalist. Anzela hopes that as a journalist, people will share their beliefs with her and she in turn,
can inform people without restrictions.

FOUR GOVERNORS RETIRE FROM THE BOARD OF THE SUNCOAST CHAPTER

At the May 13th meeting of the Board of Governors that was held at the Hilton Airport Hotel, it was announced that four
Governors had completed two terms of two years each and would retire due to the Chapter’s rule on term limits. Tammy
Darling, Director, WSVN-TV, Miami, Frank Adelson, Special Projects Editor, WTVJ/NBC6, Miami and John Mays, Chapter 1st Vice
President and Trustee, Production Manager, WFOR/CBS4, Miami. Three of the outgoing board members were awarded with gold
medallions that were presented at the meeting by Chip Richards, Suncoast Chapter president. Not present for the meeting was
Terry Bloom, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of Miami. She will also receive a gold medallion for her term as a Governor.
JOHN MAYS TO RECEIVE GOVERNORS’ AWARD
BY UNANIMOUS VOTE
At the same May 13th meeting, the Board of Governors voted unanimously to honor John Mays,
Chapter 1st Vice President and Trustee, Production Manager, WFOR/CBS4, Miami with the
prestigious Governors’ Award for his many years of producing the Suncoast Emmy® Awards.
The Governors’ Award recognizes excellence in people, cable, media and/or television entities.
It is not given every year and the candidate must receive a favorable vote of no less than 4/5th
of the Board. John’s tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed and we congratulate him for his
outstanding contribution to the Suncoast region.

WFOR NAMES JOHN GERARD WEEKEND METEOROLOGIST

WFOR has announced they hired John Gerard as the new weekend meteorologist. South Florida
viewers are already very familiar with him, for several years he was a meteorologist at WPLG until
moving to WTVJ in 2004. Gerard left WTVJ and South Florida in 2010 for San Antonio NBC affiliate
WOAI-TV where he’s currently that station’s chief meteorologist.
In addition to his weekend duties, Gerard will also be the primary fill-in meteorologist for Chief
Meteorologist Craig Setzer.
John Gerard’s first day on the air at WFOR is June 15 at 6 and 11pm.

OMAR LEWIS JOINS WSVN

Omar Lewis is coming to WSVN as a general assignment reporter from NBC affiliate KXAN in
Austin, TX where he worked as a general assignment reporter and multimedia journalist.
Lewis is a native of Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia in 2011. Before his
two-year stint at KXAN he reported for KXXV in College Station, TX and also interned at CBS in
New York City.
Look for him on the air at WSVN starting June 2.

WFTV ADDS STEPHANIE BERTINI, SHANNON BUTLER

Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV is adding two to its news team next month, according to the Orlando
Sentinel: Stephanie Bertini (pictured) who will join the station as a reporter, and Shannon Butler,
who will freelance for the station.
Bertini comes from Welasco, Texas, where she has worked as a reporter and weekend anchor at
ABC affiliate KRGV since 2010.
Butler left rival WOFL, the Fox-owned station in Orlando, last year. She has previously worked at
News 13 Orlando and at WCTV, the CBS affiliate in Tallahassee.

LISA BELL NAMED WKMG ANCHOR

WKMG has named Lisa Bell anchor for its 5:00, 6:00 and 11:00 p.m. news.
“Lisa has spent the past two years uncovering major stories as a reporter,” Steve Hyvonen, news
director for the Orlando CBS affiliate, said in a statement. “She’s one of the smartest journalists
I know. In addition to being a top reporter, Lisa is a terrific person and absolutely shines on the
anchor desk.”
Bell will co-anchor with Matt Austin.

NORMAN ROBINSON RETIRING FROM WDSU

Norman Robinson is retiring from WDSU, the NBC affiliate in New Orleans.
“We have been honored to have Norman as a colleague and friend for nearly a quarter-century
and we congratulate him on his remarkable achievements and his well-earned retirement,”
WDSU president and general manager Joel Vilmenay said in a statement. “We are pleased that he
will continue to make contributions through partnerships and appearances in the years ahead.”
Robinson has worked at WDSU since 1990. Last year, he scaled back his duties, stepping away
from the 10 p.m. anchor desk but continuing to anchor the 6 p.m. newscast.

“I am filled with bittersweet emotions, but happy to turn the page to a new chapter in my life. Most of all I have been lucky
enough to fulfill my lifelong dream to become a news anchor in the city I love,” Robinson sad. “For that, I am most grateful.”
