Sweetheart’ Paula Abdul to their screens
this year as judge for Network 10’s So You
Think You Can Dance.
Paula has been a part of the entertainment
world for over 25 years and dancing since
she was eight. Inspired as a young girl
after watching Gene Kelly in the film
Singing In The Rain, Paula is a
choreographer, dancer, songwriter,
performer, actor and businesswoman who has won 2 x Emmy Awards, a Grammy
and is a multiplatinum recording artist.
Growing up in San Fernando Valley, California Paula began her professional
dancing career as a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers. It was during this time
at a LA Lakers game Paula was discovered by The Jackson 5 and hired as their
assistant dance director. This break lead on to Paula’s career as choreographer to
the stars working with many great pop artists of the time such as, George Michael,
Duran Duran and Janet Jackson, which she won an Emmy for her dance work. It
wasn’t long before Paula transferred her skills into feature films choreographing the
likes of Tom Hanks and his giant keyboard dance in 1988’s Big, Cuba Gooding Jr’s
touchdown celebration in 1996’s Jerry Maguire and many more.
Paula launched herself as a pop star in the 1980’s becoming a huge star selling over
60 million records. By 2000 Paula had released two No.1 albums and six No.1
singles. Her album Forever Young Girl has reigned as the second longest-charting
album on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the US, only recently been bumped to # 3
by Adele.
After eight consecutive seasons Paula left American Idol and served as executive
producer of CBS’s Live To Dance, which followed with some time on The X Factor.
A huge animal lover, Paula is a spokesperson for American Human Pets and
Woman’s Shelters (PAWS) program and most recently added jewelry designer to her
credits, which came about from making jewelry as gifts for her American Idol
colleagues.
