FROM THE DESK, QUAD, TRUCK, HORSE OF MARK BENCZE G.M.
Congratulations to the 2013
Canadian Cowboys Association
Finals contestants. What a
great year to achieve the goal
of making the Finals during
the 50th Anniversary year.
Many of the alumni will be
there and hope that you take
time to soak it in and visit with
the people that created the
history as you shape the future.
The championship saddles will
have the anniversary logo and
look great and the coats will
have the new finals logo and
the 50th anniversary logo on
also.
More congratulations to the
Novice contestants competing
in Yorkton. And to Cody
Bennett and the many people,
too numerous to mention, that
worked to grow the novice
base and encourage the
contestants.
To the Alumni, the CCA is
encouraging
and
inviting
anyone associated with the
CCA in the past 50 years to the
finals. You are invited to the
yearend awards banquet and
concert Nov. 16 at approx
12:00. If you are coming we
need some kind of head count
to prepare the room and meals.
Please, take the time to call in
and leave your name and
contact information.

Looking Back at the First CCA Finals
by Adam Geiger
In 1979, the top cowboys
and cowgirls of the Canadian
Cowboys Association came
together for the first ever CCA
Finals Rodeo. 34 years later,
we're getting ready for yet
another go around, as the
Finals have become an electric
event that captivates fans for
five days and rewards the
toughest competitors for their
talents.
As we get ready for the 2013
finals and to celebrate the
CCA's 50th Anniversary, let's
take a look back at 1979 and
relive the start of a proud
tradition of rodeo excellence.
Billy Laye of Provost, Alta.
won the bareback riding,
finishing with a total of 115
points, with Grant Schlosser
of Nanton, Alta. finishing in
second. M13 Golden Ruler was
named the top bareback horse
of 1979.
Calf Roping of the 1979
Finals was a tight race between
Roger Gunsch of Thornsby,
Alta. and Doug Phipps of
Marshall, Sask. Each finished
the five performance rodeo
with 110 points, and went to a
rope-off to determine a
champion. Grunsch roped his
calf in 10.5 seconds to take the
crown.
In the Saddle Bronc, Don
Smith of Viking, Alta. racked
up a total of 140 points to win
top spot. Smith also captured
the high marked ride for the
event, picking up 82 points on
No. 99 Katy of the Franklin
Rodeo Stock.
The team of Wally Larson
and Vern Epp won the Team
Roping in '79, finishing the
Finals with 140 points of their
own. Ken Hardy and Lorne
Lynch finished second for the
year, but did post the best time
in the third go-round, with an
8.2 second run.
After two "no times" to start
the rodeo, big Mark Roy of
First Mountain, Sask. came
through to win the Steer
Wrestling championship. Mark
eventually went pro, and
became one of the top steer
wrestlers in the CPRA, and
qualified for his first National
Finals Rodeo appearance at
Las Vegas in 1990.
The 1979 Champion Barrel
Racer was Janice Waltz of
Clandonald, Alta. She finished
the finals with 120 points, 50
ahead of Anne Lawes of St.
Paul, Alta.
Finally, a young 16-year old
cowboy named Cody Snyder
won the Bull Riding at the first
ever CCA Finals Rodeo. Cody
rode all five of his bulls and
placed on four of them, also
putting together the high
marked ride, an 85 point ride
on Champion Bucking Bull
"Tall Texan" of the Franklin
herd.
Cody turned pro, and went
on to win the 1986 Canadian
Championship and the 1983
World Championship in Bull
Riding.
The CCA has a storied past
of CCA Finals performers, and
we'll look to crown new
champions in Regina in
November. See you there!

CCA RODEO NEWS October 1998
Another One Bites the Dust by Harvey
hat loud crash you
just
heard?
Yup,
again. For the 2nd
time this year, and
the 11th time in the
last
three
Canadian
Cowboys
Association
Seasons.
This
time,
it's
the
record for the most money
earned in a single season
in the Steer Wrestling
event, and Brian McPhee
Jr. will get his name into
the CCA record books for
sailing past the $8,000
mark and bypassing Wade
Pickerell.
Pickerell had set the
mark for Steer Wrestlers
by earning $7,954 way, way
back in 1994. His was the
longest standing earnings
record of any of the major
events - the longest now
being the mark of $10,874,
set in the Bronc Riding in
1995 by the late Dean
Anthony.
McPhee, a veteran of 18
summers on the CCA trail,
started out in the Steer
Riding, and carried that
on into Bareback and Bull
Riding. He still gets in
fifteen to twenty bulls a
year, "for the All - Around",
but concentrates mostly on
his 'doggin these days.
The 26-year old says he's
been able to make "some
good runs on some bad
steers" this year, and
really got a chance to
"polish up" the technique
with a stay at Cadogan,
Alberta, this summer.
"I spent the whole month
of June at Darcy Laye's,"
he informs. "I got some
great schooling in Steer
Wrestling from guys like
Leon Laye, B.J. Zieffle
and Todd Boggust."
The
tutelage
enabled
McPhee to do some fine
tuning.
"I
learned
to
slide
Brian McPhee Jr at Mosquite in 1998
Speers
better," he says, "and it
can
make
quite
a
difference. It brings the
steers around better, so
they
should
kick
out
better when you throw them
down. It's better than
hurrying and trying to
manhandle a steer."
There's another Cadogan
connection. A horse Dracy
Laye started out in June.
One McPhee swears by.
"Concho. Helluva horse.
Comes out of the corner,
gives you 100%, and gets
you there every time. You
don't ever have to worry
about
him.
Just
what
you're doing."
It became a formidable
foursome - McPhee with
Concho beneath, Laye and
Rooster on the hazing
side. They clicked for 6
placings and $2,900 in
July, then placed 5 of
the first 7 shows in
August to establish the
new monetary record.
"It's
quite
the
feeling," McPhee says of
the mark he's set, "the
feeling you've done well,

The North Battleford
Rodeo's attendance was
up
for
Friday

Saturday, but ole' man
winter assured us that he
wasn't leaving without the
final say. That's right
folks, we got dumped on
with snow, sleet, rain and
COLD. But, we rodeo folk
showed we were made of
hardy stock and could take
anything that was dished
out.
The Saddle Bronc event
was
decided
on
"Cold
Sunday"
with
Charlie
Fullerton aboard "Sherry's
Delight" with a score of
76. Second place was won by
Jason Page, third place
was won by Gary Seutter,
fourth
place
by
Wes
Petersen, fifth place by
Chris
Walsh,
and
with
sixth place being split
three-way
between
Randy

and Mac McKie.
The Bareback Riding event
was
also
decided
on
Sunday, with Alan Meilicke
riding off with the first
place title aboard "Colt
45" (the same bronc that
placed first at Tisdale's
Rodeo
the
previous
weekend). Alan's ride was
marked 75. Following in
second
place
was
Dale
Penner. The placings of
third, fourth and fifth
were split between Dale
Pollock, Ken Thompson, and
Trevor
Williams.
Sixth
place was won by Royden
Spence.
In the Bull Riding, we
saw a number of splits.
First and second was a
split between cowboys J.P.
Veitch and Robert Gray.
J.P. rode "Fort Worth" to
an 80 point score, with
Robert riding "Texas Tea"
for his 80 points. Third,
fourth
and
fifth
was
another
split
between
Kelly Flaig, Perry Gurski
and
Steve
Blondin.
In
sixth
place,
Wilks
Abbotts.
The Calf Roping event was
a bit quicker than at
Tisdale with Darren Shaw
roping his was to first
place with a time of 8.7
seconds. Second place was
a close race, with Timmy
Smith
clocking
a
9.0
second performance. Third
place
was
captured
by
Marty Becker, fourth place
was won by Justin Dyck,
fifth place was won by Neil
King and sixth place was a
split between Guy Perozak
and Eldon Jamieson.
Steer Wrestling was won
by Guy Perozak with a
record
time
of
3.7
seconds. Following close
on his heels was Gary
Fuenthner
with
3.8
seconds. Third place spot
was held by Joh Fersch,
Kirk Williamson captured
fourth and fifth was won by
Shane Buksa. Sixth place
was another split between
Darren
Shaw
and
Dean
Lawes. And get this, all
the
placings
were
4.9
seconds or less.
The Team Roping saw some
respectable times turned
in as well. The first place
team of Blaine Walburger
and Tom Davies walked away
with the money, turning in
a time of 7.8 seconds.
Second place was captured
by the team of Dale Schultz
and Scott McLeod. Third
place finishers were Judy
McKenzie and Lee McKenzie.
Fourth
place
went
to
Dennis Voth and Willie
Kaufhold, while fifth and
sixth
place
was
split
between the teams of Phil
Campbell/Doug Phipps and
Lance
Saville/Dwight
Wigemyr.
Not to forget the ladies,
the Ladies Barrel Racing,
Lisa Fletcher ran away
with the title with a time
of
13.50

Following in her wake was
Teresa Shea with 13.58
seconds Third spot was won
by Judy McKenzie, fourth

CONGRATULATIONS
2013 CCA High School Rodeo Scholarship Recipients
very year the Canadian
Cowboys Association (CCA)
awards a $500 scholarship to
one female and one male
member of the Saskatchewan High
School Rodeo Association (SHSRA).
The applicants are required to submit
an essay that outlines their
involvement and accomplishments in
the sport of rodeo as well as their
rodeo and educational goals. This
year’s recipients are Danika Symak
and Wyatt Hayes.
Danika is new to rodeo, but her
passion for the sport surpasses her
rodeo career. She is planning to
participate in the sport until she is
too old to climb onto a horse.
Danika started with a five year old
gelding that had never run a barrel
pattern. Danika and her horse have
shaved off 11 seconds since their
first run together.
steer, Ethel, had other plans. Ethel
bucked Wyatt so hard he received
thirteen stitches and missed out
competing at his local rodeo. From
that experience Wyatt decided team
roping and tie down roping would be
his events.
Even with Wyatt’s dedication to
rodeo, he has always been dedicated
to his educational goals. He worked
hard and received excellent grades in
high school and has gone on to begin
his post secondary career as an
Electrical
Engineer.
Upon
completion of University, Wyatt
wants to contribute to improving
energy efficiency in the environment
and enhancing medical devices for
early diagnosis of diseases.
Danika’s biggest fans are her mom
and her family. Their support has
allowed Danika to pursue her
education in the Western Ranch and
Cow Horse program. This training
will qualify her to be a ranch horse
trainer and working cowgirl. In the
face of adversity, Danika has held
strong to her love of rodeo through
the
sport
and
through
her
educational and career path.
Wyatt believes in the tradition that
rodeo is one big family. He describes
rodeo as his home away from home
where he can share common
interests with his rodeo family.
Rodeo has made Wyatt who he is
today, and he is proud to call himself
a cowboy.
In Danika’s own words:
It is the horse’s back
where I feel love.
It is the horse’s back
where I feel passion.
It is the horse’s back
where I feel free.
Here is where I belong;
here is where my piece
of the puzzle fits.
Danika Symak
Wyatt started his rodeo career in the
Little Britches Rodeo Association.
He spent six years with the SHSRA
and has been a CCA member for the
last three years.
Wyatt initially
thought steer riding would be his
event of choice however, the family
Roping as a Heeler. He has achieved
personal best times in both events
and qualified for the National High
School Rodeo Association Finals and
the Canadian High School Rodeo
Association Finals every year he has
competed.
Wyatt Hayes
Wyatt’s many achievements in the
sport of rodeo include being a two
time SHSRA Provincial Tie Down
Champion and the Season Leader in
both Tie Down Roping and Team
Congratulations Danika and Wyatt
on receiving the CCA High School
Rodeo Scholarship and for your
achievements in rodeo and your
personal goals.
The rodeo
community looks forward to the
contributions you will make in the
future.

Young Rodeo Stars Preparing for CCA Novice Finals
by Adam Geiger
t's been one of the most
successful years for Novice
riders in CCA history. Now,
with the Novice Finals on the
horizon, some of the top young
rodeo talents in Canada are
getting ready to make their mark.
The top five novice bull, saddle
bronc and bareback riders will
head to Yorkton on November
1st and 2nd to compete in the
CCA Novice Finals, and if the
success of the 2013 season is any
indication, it should make for a
wild ride.
"It's great to see some of our
youth really making progress in
the sport of rodeo," said General
Manager Mark Bencze. "Our
Association has sent riders to the
Calgary Stampede and other
premiere events, and we're excited
to watch them compete for a CCA
Championship in Yorkton."
In the Novice Bareback, Lane
Link of Maple Creek will be the
favourite to capture a CCA
Crown heading into the Finals.
Link currently sits atop the
standings with $1,696.34 earned,
almost $800 clear of second
place. A dark horse competitor
may be Paul Gtavelle (Bengough,
SK), who in his first year of
riding, has racked up $935.09 in
earnings.
Over in the Saddle Bronc, the
competition should be fierce.
Tyrel Fouhse (White City, SK)
competed at the 2013 Calgary
Stampede, and sits atop the
standings with $1,735.20 earned.
But, right on his heels are a pack
of cowboys with the talent to
make some noise in Yorkton.
Chase Borque (Pelly, SK) and
Cody Resch (Leader, SK) also
rode their way to the Stampede in
2013, and are in a neck-and-neck
race for 2nd and 3rd spot in the
standings.
Then come the bulls. JB Moen
(Elrose, SK) has bucked his way
to a first place bull riding standing
and $1,195.20, but right behind
him is second place Stampede
finisher Matt Leippi (Kronau,
SK).
With five competitors in every
event (an increase from three in
previous years), fans in Yorkton
will be treated to the biggest
Novice Finals yet.
"2013 has been a big year for
the
Canadian
Cowboys
Association," said Bencze. "We've
been celebrating our 50th
Anniversary, have been treated to
some fantastic performances, and
we want to carry that into the
Novice Finals. It's important to
promote the continued growth of
the sport in our young athletes."

Looking Back...
1994 Cowboy Countdown
the Best Yet
he
1994
Cowboy
Country
Countdown
Finals celebrated its
15th
year
in
Lloydminster
in
October,
and
what
a
celebration it was.
Countdown
committee
co-chairman John Phipps says
the four-day event was the
best it's ever been. And he
should know. Phipps has been
on the board since 1980, and
has been co-chair, with Kris
Niekamp, since 1985.
"Everything about it this
year was just great," Phipps
said. "With the added money
this year, we are now the
fifth
biggest
rodeo
in
Canada."
Cowboys and cowgirls from
across
three
provinces
converged in Lloydminster
for the Finals, and so did a
huge crowd.
"We were really pleased
with the crowd. It was
fantastic," said Phipps. "It
was the first time we've
ever had a crowd that big
for
the
Finals.
Every
performance had a really
good turn out, and we ended
up with just under 12,000
people
during
the
five
performances."
Another thing Phipps noted
was
the
relatively
injury-free weekend for all
the competitors.
"One of the big things
that really struck me about
this year's Finals was that
this was one of the very few
years that every contestant
who
started,
managed
to
finish the Finals," he said.
"There were a few injuries,
but no one got seriously
hurt. And that's the first
year I can remember that."
There
was
lots
of
excitement for the fans and
contestants as well.
"That 3.9 second run, as
the very last run for the
team roping title, that was
really something," Phipps
said. "Guy Perozak, in the
calf
roping,
had
the
pressure on him to win and
he came out and did it. The
bull riders all rode very
well. These were some good
rides,
I
think
everyone
rodeo to the best of their
abilities, or maybe even
were
riding
over
their
heads."
But just because the 1994
Cowboy Countdown was such a
big hit, that doesn't mean
the
Finals
committee
is
taking a break.
"Everything
just
came
together for us this year.
But we've already had our
first meeting for the 1995
Cowboy Countdown Finals."

Wingate by Wynham Regina recognizes the youth of
rodeo who exhibit dedication and determination to
the sport of rodeo. In partnership with the Canadian
Cowboys Association all youth selected will receive
a free CCA junior membership. The youth of rodeo
will also act as ambassadors for the CCA and be
involved in mentoring other youth through events
organized by Wingate and the CCA.
Name: Madison Whitney Berg
Parents Name:
Clark Kovar and Lisa Berg
Nickname: Cowboy Kovar
Age: 16
Events(s) you compete in:
Breakaway, Team Roping,
Goat Tying, Pole Bending, and
Barrel Racing.
When did you start?: I was
pretty much born on a horse
But, I started SHSRA in my
grade 8 year and my first CCA
was when I was 11 years old.
What is your favourite
memory or experience so far?: It’s a toss-up between winning
Saskatchewan jr. Girls breakaway in grade 8 after only going to the
spring half of the rodeos and this year’s trip to the NHSFR in Rock
Springs, WYO.
Who is your inspiration and why?: My inspiration is my Dad
Clark because he has always pushed him and me to be the best at
what we do even if it is something small.
What's on your iPod?: There is a little dabble of everything but,
there is lots of Avicii, Imagine Dragons, and also tons of new and
old country music.
Favourite foods: Steak, and anything my auntie Stacy cooks.
What message would you like to share with city kids who are
interested in rodeo?: "Champions are not those who never fail
but those who never admit defeat" - if what you do is what you love
then practice makes perfect! Even if you don't own a horse (if that
is what you like) then find yourself someone who shares your
passion who will help you and push you to your limits because
behind every legend is the impossible dream! So dream big! And
start NOW!
Where can we see you compete this year?: SHSRA rodeos, CCA
rodeos, SBRA jackpots, and some little britches association
rodeos.

Name: Tyrell Hicks
Parents Name:
Jason and Karla Hicks
Age: 16
Events(s) you compete in: :
Novice Saddle Bronc in CCA;
Saddle Bronc, Tie Down and
Team Roping in SK High
School Rodeo
When did you start?: 2011
What is your favourite
memory or experience so
far?: Winning the Saddle
Bronc buckle at Agribition’s
High School Rodeo last year,
Meeting the Etbauer’s, Taos Muncy, Cort Scheer & Wildman Larry
Sandvick at the Etbauer Saddle Bronc School and Rod Hay &
Dustin Thompson at their saddle bronc school and just being able
to ride beside guys that I’ve always watched from the stands.
Who is your inspiration and why?: In Saddle Bronc Billy
Etbauer and Rod Hay, because they make it look so easy and Wade
Sundell because he’s so aggressive. Taos Muncy and Cort Scheer
because they are really easy to talk to and easy to learn from. With
Roping I’m really lucky because I have some of the best that are
just a short drive away that help me anytime I ask guys like Brady
Chappel, Kent Drake, Blaine Switzer for sure and they all make
roping look effortless. I really like watching them rope and I hope
I’m that good one day to. There are lots of guys – too many to name
– that are close by that I look up to and have taught me lots and
I’m thankful for that.
What's on your iPod?: ?: On my IPhone is “Wagon Wheel” by Old
Crow Medicine Show – cuz it’s the best version!
Favourite foods: Steak n baked potatoes
What message would you like to share with city kids who are
interested in rodeo?: There’s nothing better than rodeo –
adrenaline rush all the way.
Where can we see you compete this year?: Val Marie, Beechy,
