The FIFA Confederations Cup – Continental showdown
One of the most recent introductions to FIFA’s range of competitions for national teams is the FIFA
Confederations Cup, held every four years. In recent times, it has been seen as a warm-up event in the host
country of the next FIFA World Cup™, but is by no means a minor competition. In fact, due to the nature
of its participants, it is often referred to as the ‘Festival of Champions’ tournament. The FIFA Confederations
Cup aims to give the top teams from all continents a chance to represent their region in a world play-off,
and this opportunity – together with the handsome prize money that goes with it – is particularly important
and appealing to teams from certain developing football continents.
History
The FIFA Confederations Cup was first designated a FIFA competition in December 1997 when it was held
in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Previously there had been two other tournaments in Riyadh, in 1992 and 1995,
under the title of Intercontinental Championship.
In 1992, the winners were Argentina, then reigning South American champions. They came with a starstudded team including Batistuta, Redondo, Caniggia and Simeone and carried off the trophy after
defeating the host country, despite their tremendous support from the home fans, in the final. The other
two teams taking part on that occasion were the USA and Côte d’Ivoire.
Six teams took part in the 1995 competition and this time it was Denmark who took the honours, with
strong performances from the Laudrup brothers earning them victory over Argentina. Mexico and Nigeria
made it to the semi-finals, while Japan and the host country were eliminated after losing both of their
group matches.
In 1997, Brazil promptly stamped their authority on the competition to win the striking new gold trophy.
One of the main purposes of the tournament was clearly demonstrated when Australia made it to the final
to take on the then world champions.
In 1999, the Mexicans richly deserved to win the cup as one of two teams unbeaten in the group stage to
make it to the final. The home ”Azteca” factor – Mexico had not been beaten there for 18 years – could
not be ignored. Brazil lived up to expectations as their talent factory continued to produce outstanding
players.
The tournament also witnessed a standard of goalkeepers seldom seen in a single tournament with the likes
of Keller (USA), Campos (MEX), Dida (BRA) and Utting (NZL) competing. Surprise packages Saudi Arabia
recovered after a 5-1 thrashing by Mexico in their opening match to qualify for the semi-finals, following a
5-1 win in an all-Arab clash with Egypt. The USA defeated giants Germany only to later narrowly fail to a
golden goal by Mexico’s top scorer Blanco. New Zealand went home happy after gamely facing up to
Germany and the USA.
In Korea/Japan in 2001, a near-capacity crowd of over 65,000 saw world champions France defeat co-hosts
Japan with the only goal of the final to win the tournament and complete an unprecedented hat-trick of
three major trophies in just four years. But they had to defend resolutely at times as Japan staged a secondhalf fight-back.
In 2003, defending and European champions France hosted the FIFA Confederations Cup, organising
matches in three of the 1998 World Cup stadiums – Lyons, St Etienne and Paris/St Denis. Brazil had to
accept an early flight home after the group stage, bowing out of a tough group of strong performers in the
shape of Cameroon, Turkey and the USA. The revitalised hosts, on the other hand, won their group. Turkey
consolidated their rise as a global football power and only just missed out on a place in the final. The event
was overshadowed by the tragic death of Cameroonian midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe, whose team-mates
conceded the title to France by a whisker in an emotionally charged final against an equally shaken French
side.

Despite the absence of superstar striker Ronaldo from the FCC 2005, Brazil dazzled in an exciting final against
rivals Argentina to lift the trophy for the second time. Adriano gained justified recognition as a force to be
reckoned with, earning both the adidas Golden Ball and Golden Shoe awards. While Argentina’s defeat was
hard to take, their performance clearly showed a hint of great things to come with the competition shining a
spotlight on the magical skills of their key player, Riquelme.
The competition also displayed German prowess in the shape of a well-organised dry run for the 2006 FIFA
World Cup™ and the emergence of a young and promising German team – in particular, the partnership of
up-and-coming starlets Podolski and Schweinsteiger – under the watchful eye of footballing legend Jürgen
Klinsmann, enabling them to secure third-place in a thrilling extra time play-off against Mexico.
In 2009, for the first time in the history of the FIFA Confederations Cup, the event took place on African
soil. South Africa certainly proved themselves capable of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and
impressively presented some of their World Cup host cities – Johannesburg, Rustenburg,
Mangaung/Bloemfontein und Tshwane/Pretoria. The gripping tournament in South Africa ended with a
worthy final in Johannesburg with both Brazil and the USA battling for the title. After a 3-2 victory, it was
Brazil who lifted the trophy for the third time.

been won by a European side, namely France in 1998, Italy in 2006 and Spain in 2010.
Brazil have won their last seven FIFA Confederations Cup matches and are unbeaten in eight. Their most recent
defeat stretches back to 2005, when Mexico beat them 1-0 win in Hanover.
The record for the most appearances in the FIFA Confederations Cup is held by Brazil’s Dida, who played 22
games over five campaigns between 1997 and 2005.

Japan are taking part in their fifth FIFA Confederations Cup, eight years since their last outing at Germany 2005.
The Samurai Blue have accrued more participations and more matches (13) than any other Asian side in the
event’s history.
In the 2001 edition played in Korea/Japan, Japan came second after losing the final 1-0 to the reigning world
champions France. Patrick Vieira’s match-winner was the only goal that Japan conceded during the campaign.
On their last appearance in 2005, Japan were eliminated in the opening round solely on account of their goal
difference, which was worse than Brazil’s.
Shunsuke Nakamura and Hidetoshi Nakata are the only Japanese players to have scored in two different editions
of the FIFA Confederations Cup. Nakamura netted three goals in 2003 and one in 2005, whereas Nakata was on
target once in both the 2001 and 2003 editions.
The only home-grown coach to have led Japan at the FIFA Confederations Cup was Shu Kamo, during their
debut participation in 1995. Each of their subsequent campaigns were overseen by foreign coaches, namely
France’s Philippe Troussier in 2001 and Brazil’s Zico in 2003 and 2005.

Mexico are second only to Brazil in terms of FIFA Confederations Cup participations (this will be the Mexicans’
sixth), matches played (19) and goals scored (33).
El Tri are the only CONCACAF team to have won the trophy, achieving the feat as hosts in 1999 with a 4-3 win
over Brazil in the final.
That deciding match of the FIFA Confederations Cup 1999 generated the biggest attendance in the
tournament’s history, with 110,000 spectators packing into Mexico City’s Azteca stadium on 4 August.
Cuauhtemoc Blanco is the all-time joint top-scorer in the FIFA Confederations Cup with nine goals, the same
number as Brazil’s Ronaldinho. The Mexican hit three goals in 1997 and six in the victorious 1999 campaign.
Mexico were involved in five of the eight FIFA Confederations Cup matches that have gone into extra time. Two
of those games finished straight after the added half-hour, with Mexico winning one and losing one. The other
three continued to penalty shoot-outs, only one of which culminated in a Tricolor victory.

Italy are competing in their second finals, having attended the previous 2009 edition in South Africa as the
reigning world champions.
The Italians are taking part in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 as the runners-up of UEFA EURO 2012. The last
vice-champions of Europe to feature in this competition were Czech Republic in 1997.
During their only previous participation in 2009, Italy were eliminated in the opening round following a 3-1 win
over USA and two losses, 1-0 to Egypt and 3-0 to Brazil.
Also at South Africa 2009, Italy were drawn in the same group as the two eventual finalists, Brazil and USA.
The last match Italy played on Brazilian soil dates back to 1 July 1956, when they lost 2-0 to the host team in a
friendly. Prior to that Gli Azzurri had contested two games at the 1950 FIFA World Cup, losing 3-2 to Sweden
and beating Paraguay 2-0.

Spain have taken part in the FIFA Confederations Cup just once before, finishing third in 2009 after a 3-2 extratime win over hosts South Africa.
During that 2009 campaign Spain kept clean sheets in each of their three group matches, a feat previously
achieved twice by Brazil (in 1999 and 2001) and once by Japan (2001) and Cameroon (2003).
The 2-0 defeat to USA in the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 ended Spain’s sequence of 35
matches undefeated, which equalled Brazil's world record set between 1993 and 1996. The run had begun on 7
February 2007 with a 1-0 victory over England in Manchester.
In the match against New Zealand, Fernando Torres scored the only hat-trick of the FIFA Confederations Cup
2009, the eighth in the history of the tournament. It was also the second treble netted by a European player,
after Vladimir Smicer in Czech Republic’s 6-1 defeat of United Arab Emirates in 1997.
No fewer than 18 members of the Spanish squad at the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 went on to be crowned
world champions the following year in South Africa.

Uruguay are making their second appearance in the FIFA Confederations Cup, after finishing fourth in the 1997
tournament.
In their only previous FIFA Confederations Cup campaign, Uruguay won their three group matches before losing
their semi-final against Australia 1-0 after extra time. The winner was a golden goal struck by Harry Kewell on 92
minutes.
Uruguay’s return to the FIFA Confederations Cup after a 16-year absence coincides with them winning the Copa
America the same number of years since they last won it (1995–2011).
Uruguay have scored in three of their five matches played in the competition—against United Arab Emirates,
Czech Republic and South Africa—and on each occasion they netted on 88 minutes or later.
Uruguay are one of a trio of sides that have played at least five games in the FIFA Confederations Cup without
drawing any of them. La Celeste have collected three wins and two defeats in total. The other two teams are
France with nine wins and one defeat, and Spain with four wins and one defeat.

This is the first time that Tahiti have qualified for the FIFA Confederations Cup.
Tahiti’s only previous participation in the finals of a FIFA competition was at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2009 in
Egypt, when they were eliminated at the group stage with three defeats, no goals scored and 21 conceded.
Tahiti qualified by virtue of winning their first OFC Nations Cup in 2012. The islanders clinched the title with a 10 win over New Caledonia in the final on 10 June, thanks to a goal by Steevy Chong Hue.
Tahiti are the third side to represent Oceania in the FIFA Confederations Cup, having been preceded by Australia
(before their switch to the AFC in 2006) and New Zealand.

Nigeria make their return to the FIFA Confederations Cup after an absence of 18 years, having last taken part in
1995 as winners of the CAF African Cup of Nations 1994. The Super Eagles finished fourth in that campaign.
Nigeria became the final team to qualify for the FIFA Confederations Cup when they claimed the African title on
10 February with a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso, thanks to Sunday Mba’s match-winner.
Nigeria are one of two unbeaten teams in the history of the FIFA Confederations Cup, having won one match
and drawn two. One of those stalemates took place in the match for third place, which the west Africans
subsequently lost on penalties. The other undefeated team is Denmark, with two wins and a draw.
Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Japan on their tournament debut in 1995 remains the biggest win by an African team
in the FIFA Confederations Cup.
The only goal that Nigeria have conceded in the tournament was netted by Mexico’s Ramon Ramirez in the
match for third place, which finished 1-1 before the Super Eagles lost on penalties.

This is the 16th meeting between the two sides, who have won more FIFA World Cups than any other team.
Brazil have the upper hand in the head-to-head series with seven wins to Italy’s five, the other two matches
having ended drawn.
Five of the pair’s previous encounters came in the FIFA World Cup. They include two Finals (in 1970 and 1994), a
match for third place (1978), a semi-final (1938), and a second-round group match (1982).
Brazil and Italy will meet twice in one year for the third time, two friendly matches in 1956 and a friendly and
FIFA Confederations Cup match in 2009 similar to this year with their recent friendly in March and their
forthcoming meeting in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013.

Brazil remain undefeated after nine previous encounters against Japan, with a record of seven wins and two
draws. The only one of those matches to be played in Brazil was the first, which took place in Rio de Janeiro in
1989, a week after A Seleção clinched the Copa America. The Brazilians beat Japan 1-0 in that friendly game,
courtesy of a solitary goal from Bismarck.
The only two meetings in which Japan managed to avoid defeat against Brazil both came in the FIFA
Confederations Cup. The Samurai Blue tied 0-0 with the South Americans in 2001 before earning a 2-2 draw in
2005, a result which nevertheless enabled the Brazilians to qualify from the group stage at Japan’s expense on
account of their superior goal difference. Japan’s coach during that latter campaign was Brazilian former No10
Zico.
Since that 2-2 draw with Japan in Cologne, Brazil have won all seven of their matches played in the FIFA
Confederations Cup. They are now one victory short of equalling France’s tournament record of eight
consecutive wins, which was established between 2001 and 2003.

Brazil – Mexico facts & figures
The pair have gone toe-to-toe on no fewer than 37 previous occasions and it is the South Americans who lead
the overall series with 21 victories to ten, with the other six games ending drawn. Mexico have fared better in
FIFA Confederations Cup encounters, with two wins to Brazil’s one. The most important of those victories was
undoubtedly the 4-3 win in the final of the 1999 edition, which was played out in the Azteca stadium, Mexico
City, in front of 110,000 spectators, the biggest attendance in the tournament’s history.
This will be the fourth Brazil-Mexico encounter in the FIFA Confederations Cup, making it the most-played
fixture in the history of the competition alongside Brazil-USA, which has also taken place four times.
This is Brazil’s 30th match in the FIFA Confederations Cup. The Canarinhos have clocked up the most games of
any side in the tournament’s history, followed by none other than Mexico who will be making their 21st
appearance.

This is only the third meeting between the two teams. The first dates back to 1936, when Italy ran out 8-0
winners in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Football Tournament, before going on to clinch their only Olympic
gold medal in the sport. The last encounter was a friendly match played out in November 2001 in Saitama,
which finished 1-1.
This will be the first time that Italy have faced Asian opposition in the FIFA Confederations Cup.
All three previous FIFA Confederations Cup meetings between Japan and European teams ended with a singlegoal margin separating the sides. After losing 1-0 to France in 2001 and 2-1 to the same team in 2003, the east
Asians edged Greece 1-0 in 2005.

The two sides have already crossed paths 11 times. The Italians have largely dominated the head-to-head series
with six wins to Mexico’s one, plus four draws. Moreover, Gli Azzurri have never failed to score in matches
against Mexico.
Mexico’s only win over Italy came in the pair’s last friendly encounter, which took place in 2010 ahead of the
FIFA World CupTM in South Africa. The game finished 2-1 following goals from Carlos Vela, Alberto Medina and
Leonardo Bonucci. In the FIFA World Cup itself, the teams have played out two draws and one win in Italy’s
favour.
Italy last played on Brazilian soil nearly 57 years ago, in a 2-0 friendly defeat by the host country on 1 July 1956
in Rio de Janeiro. Incidentally, only Brazil have played more FIFA Confederations Cup matches than Mexico,
whose meeting with Italy will be their 20th appearance in the tournament.

The pair have met on four previous occasions, with Mexico picking up three wins compared to Japan’s one. All
four of those games ended with one-goal margins separating the sides.
The last time the two teams faced off was in this very competition in 2005. Mexico came from behind to win 2-1
with goals from Zinha and Jose Fonseca, after Atsushi Yanagisawa had opened the scoring for Japan.
No FIFA Confederations Cup match between AFC and CONCACAF representatives has ended in a draw. The
North, Central America and Caribbean Confederation leads the head-to-head series with five wins to three.

Spain are unbeaten in nine encounters with Uruguay, having collected four wins and five draws. The sides last
met in February 2013 when Spain notched a 3-1 friendly win in Doha.
Brazil hosted the first meeting between Spain and Uruguay, which took place in the final-round group at the
1950 FIFA World Cup and finished 2-2 in Sao Paulo. Their only other encounter in the global extravaganza also
ended in a stalemate, 0-0 in Udine in the first round of the 1990 edition.
Spain are yet to concede a goal in the first round of the FIFA Confederations Cup, having prevented New
Zealand, Iraq and South Africa from scoring against them during the 2009 campaign.

The sides’ only prior encounter took place in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where Nigeria triumphed 3-2. Spain had
twice taken the lead through Fernando Hierro and Raul, only for Nigeria to reply first through Mutiu Adepoju
and then with an own goal by Andoni Zubizarreta, before Sunday Oliseh grabbed the winner 12 minutes from
the end.
Two reigning world champions have been knocked out of the FIFA Confederations Cup in the first round,
namely Brazil in 2003 and Italy in 2009.
In their first and only prior campaign, in 2009, Spain encountered African opposition twice. Each time La Roja
came up against South Africa, beating them 2-0 in the first round and then 3-2 after extra time in the match for
third place.

Tahiti - Nigeria: No previous head-to-heads
This is the pair’s first meeting at ‘A’ international level, although they did square up at the FIFA U-20 World Cup
2009 in Egypt. Nigeria prevailed 5-0 on that occasion, a first-round match held in Cairo.
There have been two prior encounters between African and Oceanian sides in the FIFA Confederations Cup,
both of which finished 2-0 in favour of CAF representatives: Tunisia saw off Australia in 2005, before South
Africa overcame New Zealand in 2009.
Nigeria are one of two undefeated sides in the FIFA Confederations Cup, the other being Denmark. The west
Africans went unbeaten in their previous participation in 1995, earning one win, two draws and losing only on
penalties to Mexico in the match for third place.
Spain - Tahiti: No previous head-to-heads
This is the first ‘A’ international meeting between the pair. Four years ago, Spain and Tahiti found themselves
pitched together in the same first-round group of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2009 in Egypt, with the Iberians
cantering to a 8-0 win.
Spain’s senior international side have met Oceanian opposition only once before, in this very competition in
2009, when they comfortably beat New Zealand 5-0 in Rustenburg.
This is the sixth UEFA-OFC showdown in the FIFA Confederations Cup, in which European teams have largely
dominated with four wins to one. The only defeat conceded by a UEFA team to Oceanian opponents was a 1-0
upset suffered by reigning world champions France against Australia in 2001.
Nigeria – Uruguay: No previous head-to-heads
The two countries have never met at senior level, nor have they played each other in the finals of any FIFA
competition.
Of all the teams participating in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013, Nigeria and Uruguay have waited the
longest to make their respective returns to the competition. The west Africans’ last appearance was in 1995,
whereas the South Americans have been absent since 1997.
CONMEBOL teams have a superior head-to-head record against their African counterparts in the FIFA
Confederations Cup. In ten prior showdowns, South American sides have collected six wins to two, plus two
draws. The two African victories were both 1-0 wins to Cameroon over Brazil and Colombia at the 2003 edition.
Uruguay - Tahiti: No previous head-to-heads
The sides have never met before either at ‘A’ international level, or in the finals of a FIFA competition.
Uruguay last faced an Oceanian national team in November 2005, when they lost 1-0 after extra time (and then
again on penalties at the end of the match) to Australia in the return leg of the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying
play-off.
There have been two OFC victories over CONMEBOL opposition in the FIFA Confederations Cup. The losing team
in the first of those matches was none other than Uruguay, who were beaten 1-0 after extra time by Australia in
the 1997 semi-finals. Subsequently in 2001, Australia also beat Brazil 1-0 in the match for third place.
Nevertheless, South American sides have the better head-to-head record against Oceanian teams in this
tournament, with four victories to two, plus one draw.

The FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 - 13 things you need to know
1
The FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 is the seventh edition under this name, the first of which took
place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 1997. Before this there were two preceding tournaments in 1992 and
1995 known as the King Fahd Cup which were also organised by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation
and which are generally included in historical and statistical reviews.
2
The FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 will be Brazil’s seventh consecutive participation the most of all
national teams. They also have been awarded the most trophies having won in 1997, 2005, 2009 and
being runners-up in 1999.
3
The only teams to successfully defend their title are France in 2003 and Brazil in 2009.
4
To date 29 teams have participated in at least one edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup. In Brazil 2013
Tahiti will be the only newcomer.
5
This will be the fourth edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup to be played one year before in the same
host country as the FIFA World Cup™. The first was Korea/Japan 2001, followed by Germany 2005 and
South Africa 2009.
6
Brazil 2013 will be the first FIFA Confederations Cup with four representative teams that were former
world champions: Uruguay, Italy, Brazil and Spain.
7
Five out of the eight participating teams at the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 were also present in the
FIFA World Cup 1950™ also hosted by Brazil: Italy, Mexico, Spain, Uruguay and Brazil.
8
Brazil will be the fifth different confederation to host the FIFA Confederations Cup – South
America. Asia have already done so four times, Europe twice, North Central America and Caribbean
once and Africa once. Only the Oceania zone has not yet hosted the event. In the eight
competitions held to date, South Americans have claimed the title four times (with three wins for
Brazil and one for Argentina) although Europe have almost matched the feat with three titles (two
for France and one for Denmark). The only other title went to North and Central America thanks to
Mexico’s win over Brazil on home soil in 1999. Each confederation has been represented in the final
at least once. So far, only France (2003) and Brazil (2009) have successfully defended their title.
9
Only previous hosts Mexico (1999) and France (2003) triumphed on home soil. Japan did, however,
reach the final in 2001.
10
All confederations have been represented at least once in a FIFA Confederations Cup final. Australia’s
qualification in 1997, when they were still part of the Oceania Football Confederation, was the biggest
surprise.
11
Continental derbies have been few and far between at the FIFA Confederations Cup. Two teams from
the same confederation have only come up against each other on three occasions. The most recent
encounter was the super clásico between Brazil and Argentina in the 2005 final. The two before that
were Mexico and USA in 1999 and France and Turkey in 2003. This list could be extended in 2013 if
Brazil meet Uruguay or if Spain play Italy.
12
Brazil’s goalkeeper Dida is the player with the most participations. He was present in five editions from
1997 to 2005 for a total of 22 matches. Mexico’s Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Brazil’s Ronaldinho are the
all-time top scorers with nine goals each.
13
No foreign coach has ever won a FIFA Confederations Cup title. All eight winning coaches were native.
Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Carlos Alberto Parreira are the only two to have won both the FIFA World
Cup™ and the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Description
The FIFA Confederations Cup Official Trophy is representative of
The tournament’s theme ‘Festival of Champions’. Two gold ribbons are wrapped
around the central body in a festive, dynamic movement. They visually connect
the six medallions arranged around the upper segment of the base – each
bearing the name of one Confederation – with the globe. The globe references
the six continents whose national teams participate in this FIFA tournament.
The Trophy recently underwent a touch of modernisation and was fitted with a
re-designed, cone-shaped base to complement the family of FIFA trophies.
