From the Board Chair and President
Dear Friends,
What a Golden Anniversary! 2013 was a cause for celebration as it marked the milestone
of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Arts and Education Council in St. Louis.
Since our inception in 1963 as a United Arts Fund, A&E has raised and distributed more
than $100 million in support of nonprofit arts and arts education organizations. Over a
50-year span, we have provided 2,800 grants to hundrerds of organizations throughout

16 counties in Missouri and Illinois. We are fortunate to have longtime supporters who
have continued to believe in our mission of arts advocacy. A thriving arts climate only
strengthens the creativity, innovation and diversity necessary for a healthy, growing
community where people love to live, work and play. This support is made possible
through the efforts of businesses, individuals and community partners who recognize
that the arts are essential to building and sustaining a vibrant community.
And while we did celebrate 50 years of accomplishments, we also took a big step into

the future with the launch of our new cultural crowdfunding website, power2give.org,
a platform where individuals and corporations can donate directly to projects they care
about. You can read more about this new and exciting program on page 4.
We are grateful to live in a community that values the role the arts play in educating
our children, driving the economy and enhancing our quality of life. Thank you to our
generous supporters who believe in the mission of the Arts and Education Council and
our work in the cultural sector. Together, we keep art happening.

Missouri Arts Award
The Arts and Education Council was presented with a Missouri Arts Award for Philanthropy in a
ceremony at the Capitol Rotunda in Jefferson City in February. Initiated in 1983, the Missouri Arts
Awards honor individuals and organizations that have made profound and lasting contributions to
the cultural and artistic climate of the state. Each year, Missouri Arts Awards nominees are reviewed
by a committee of Missouri citizens from throughout the state who are knowledgeable, experienced
and highly respected in the arts.

Investing in the Arts
Contributions to the Arts and Education Council supported nearly 80 organizations in dozens of regional communities.
Investments ranged from operating and program support to grants in support of arts education in local schools. Named
opportunity grant support included: Maritz Arts and Education Fund for Teachers, PNC Project Grants, Monsanto Fund
Rural Community Arts Education Program and the Boeing/A&E Collaborative Grant Program.

St. Louis Arts Awards
Presented since 1992, the St. Louis Arts Awards is the
preeminent award ceremony honoring individuals who
achieve a legacy of artistic excellence, and organizations
and businesses that enrich St. Louis’ arts and cultural
community. Proceeds from this event benefit the Arts
and Education Council’s annual campaign that helps
to fund over 70 arts and arts education organizations
throughout the 16-county, bi-state St. Louis region.

Among the highlights were moving tributes and stellar
performances including a special tribute to Lifetime
Achievement in the Arts honoree Chuck Berry by guitarist
Billy Peek that had the audience on their feet and dancing
in the aisles.
