for the weekend of August 23/24 Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and com‐
forted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Page Three

FRANCIS Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life. Father Louis J. Cameli Rev. Louis J. Cameli is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago who was ordained in 1969. He served on the faculty of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake / Mun‐
delein Seminary in a num‐
ber of roles, including professor of spiritual theology, director of spiritual life, and president of the ecclesi‐
astical faculty of theology. Cameli was the founding director of the Office for Ongoing Formation of Priests of the Archdiocese and served as pastor of Divine Savior Par‐
ish in Norridge, Illinois. Appointed by Cardinal Francis George as the Archbishop’s Delegate for Formation and Mission, Cameli currently serves as a resource theologian to the agencies of the Archdiocese. INVITATION TO JOIN THE MEMORIAL BRICK PROJECT AROUND THE STATUE OF THE BLESSED MOTHER The place on our property around the statue of the Blessed Mother is special because it commemorates our parishioners who have died during war. On Memorial Day each year, by the statue, we pray and we remember our hero parishioners who fought in many different corners of the world for peace and freedom, and have sacrificed their lives for God and country. During the months dediated to Blessed Mother, May and October, on each Saturday we pray together by at that statue, to praise Mary, Mother of God and ask for her care and through her intercession for our community and our families. Everyday, many people stop by the statue to reflect and pray. At the suggestion and initiative of the Polish Rosary Groups we would like to restore, clean up and fix up this site, lay brick stones, put up benches, plant flowers and trees around this very special place. This project will give us and our entire St. Ferdinand community a great opportunity to honor or memorialize a loved one. If you would like to leave a lasting remembrance, we invite you to participate in this project! It will be a special place to remember anyone and make a path for those who come after you and forever to stay in the hearts of St. Ferdinand families. The detailed information about purchasing a memorial brick in honor or in memory of someone is on the next page. Please fill out the order form and return to our parish office. Thank you. Copyright 2014 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) A friend recently suggested I might enjoy going with her to a meeting of a local QA group which featured the keynote address: “The Bushido Code: The Seven Virtues of the Samurai.” Not that I’m a big Samurai fan‐‐other than John Belushi on SNL‐‐but the write‐
up intrigued me (“In this presentation, John Godoy draws from his Japanese heritage and his experiences as a martial artist, endur‐
ance athlete, and coach to take us through the code of the Samurai and teaches us to develop a code for our own lives…”). Daisy had me at endurance athlete; the 67th‐floor‐of‐Willis‐Tower venue was just gravy. Godoy spoke of his decision to enter his first Ironman Triath‐
lon (a 2.4 mile open‐water swim followed by 112 bike miles fol‐
lowed by a 26.2 mile run) years back. He also spoke of his study of the Samurai, the feared warriors who transitioned to Japanese peacetime by doing three things: “assuming their responsibility for their path in life; adapting to their changing environment; and ap‐
plying what they learned to their lives.” Finally, Godoy spoke of his martial arts training and of an instructor he once had who, before moving from one concept to the next, directed his students to con‐
firm their comprehension of the material by saying, “Oss!” when asked if they totally understood each point as presented. So, in this context, “Yes.” And now, the Bushido Code… Virtue 1: Kennin – A sense of inner strength; Virtue 2: Shinnen – A sense of self‐belief; Virtue 3: Shincho – Good judgment, especially in being goal‐
focused; Virtue 4: Seigi – Being justice‐focused (always standing up for what’s right); Virtue 5: Sessei – Work/life balance; Virtue 6: Jizen – A sense of charity and benevolence; Virtue 7: Kibo – A strong sense of hope for the future. I’m guessing that the Canaanite woman in today’s Gospel knows nothing of the Bushido Code. Nonetheless, she lives it to the core. Her inner strength is evident because while Canaanites in general are disregarded by the Jews‐‐and Canaanite women are essentially non‐existent‐‐she still cries out to Jesus to save her daughter “tormented by a demon.” Her sense of self‐belief is evi‐
dent because she continues to call out even after the disciples en‐
courage Jesus to send her away. Her goal‐focus is evident because she refuses to accept Christ’s initial disregard. Her justice‐focus is evidenced by her response to Christ’s observation that it’s not right to throw food intended for children to the dogs: “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their mas‐
ters.” We do not know her occupation, but her work/life balance and her charity are confirmed by her going out of her way to seek Christ’s help for her child. And her hope for the future is confirmed by Jesus himself: “…great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” I love this woman because of her powerful ethos/ code‐of‐
conduct/ bushido. Call it what you will, but do I think she has a bold and courageous faith I can aspire to? Oss. Totally. Oss. St. Ferdinand Parish
