Take the First Step to End Domestic Violence
2012 Annual Report
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Recently, one of our Women’s Advocates observed that women
turn to us for services when their community—family, friends, faith
leaders, co-workers—are unable to help them as they struggle with
an abusive relationship. Or sometimes, women are simply too
embarrassed to reach out to friends and family, so that those who
would want to help aren’t aware of the need. Abuse is scary,
confusing, and often confounding of our stereotypes about who
abuses and why. Yet sometimes a confidant sharing the simple
statement: “abuse is wrong and you deserve better” is enough to
launch the journey toward self-determination and freedom from
fear that ALL people deserve.
This journey always begins with a first step.
It’s our job to ensure that everyone
in our community has the potential to take it.
In 2012, New Beginnings helped over 10,000 people take their first,
second, and many succeeding steps to end domestic violence.
A worried father called our 24-hour Help Line to ask about
supporting his daughter whose husband has begun to isolate her
from her family and friends.
A concerned teacher spoke to our Prevention Educator about a
student whose boyfriend texts her over 100 times a day to monitor
her whereabouts.
A woman in our support group asked about resources for a
co-worker who comes to work with bruises on her neck and arms.
A ten year old boy in our transitional housing program talked for
the first time about the humiliation and violence experienced in the
home he and his mother fled.
A new mother contacted us about shelter because she feared her
boyfriend’s abuse would affect their baby.
These, and so many other stories we are privileged to hear each day
reflect the many first steps taken by brave men, women and children
in our community. Their steps are firmer and more confident because
of the many steps YOU have taken to support New Beginnings over
its 37 years. We are deeply grateful for your generous gifts that
make our work possible. Together, we WILL end domestic violence!

The amazing group of Microsoft volunteers who helped refresh our Shelter
Microsoft Day of Caring
September 21, 2012 was a chilly, foggy morning, but that didn’t
deter over 20 Microsoft employees from arriving at New Beginnings’
Emergency Shelter for the Day of Caring. Led by longtime New
Beginnings supporters Terry and Manuela Crowley, the Microsoft
employees showed up bright and early for a full day of volunteer
projects. Shelter Household Coordinator Roy Anaclerio set the
volunteers up with a variety of tasks, all intended to make our
shelter a clean, safe and beautiful place to live. Shelter staff and
residents are deeply grateful for the compassion and dedication
of the 2012 Microsoft Day of Caring volunteers!

When I started working with New Beginnings in
2009 I had no intention of leaving my husband even
though he had abused me almost every week for 28
years. I decided to join a support group where I was
motivated by the other stories I was hearing and I
left Dave in 2011. Then I was diagnosed with cancer
and went through chemo. By the time I was officially
free from Dave I felt like I had been cured of two
deadly cancers.

Bryana took the first step to self-sufficiency by
going back to school to get her nursing degree.
New Beginnings helped her with school expenses
and bought her books and nursing shoes.
In 2012 New Beginnings provided more than
$37,000 in direct assistance to program
participants. In addition to school expenses,
direct assistance funds paid for drivers’ licenses,
replacement of identity documents, medical
care, rental assistance and the occasional bus
ride to safety.

International Community of Bosniaks in Washington
Imam Polovina and his wife
The International Community
of Bosniaks in Washington, a
mosque serving north King
County, collected several pallets
of food for New Beginnings’
Shelter in November 2012. Imam
Abdullah Polovina knew the
food would be appreciated but
he hadn’t realized how much it
meant to New Beginnings until
he delivered the donation and
heard stories about our services.
This led to an invitation for a
New Beginnings staff person
to speak to members of the
congregation about our services.
New Beginnings thanks ICBW for
their generosity.

Program Participant
After Barbara left her violent husband he
continued to use their children to manipulate and
control her. This created a rift between Barbara
and her daughters. She took the first step by
attending New Beginnings’ parenting classes and
enrolling her children in Kids’ Club, a specialized
support group for children who have experienced
domestic violence.

All the staff at Zymogenetics got dressed up and
hosted a live auction, raffle and bake sale, raising
over $2,500 for New Beginnings. What a great,
fun way to show your support!

Rebuilding Together
It is a powerful
event when the
community comes
together to make
our world a better
place. New
Beginnings had
an opportunity
to experience that
power when Rebuilding Together
accepted us for an Emergency
Shelter repair project.
So many issues had recently
moved from: “we’ll get to it one
day” to: “we have to do this
NOW!” We were truly thankful
that we were accepted for this
project and to have Peter Wolf
(Coho Windermere) and Doug
Wilson (Copiers NW) as our
sponsor leadership. With almost
50 volunteers on site (the most
we have ever had!) the day ran
smoothly as they painted several
bedrooms, fixed leaks, replaced
bathroom fans and lighting
among other projects, while
having a great time. Thank you

Gala A Mother’s Courage, A Child’s Future
Thanks to our dedicated donors 2012’s A Mother’s Courage, A
Child’s Future Gala was another terrific success! One of our
favorite highlights that evening was the Dessert Dash, which raised
$17,460 due in large part to Carolyn and Jeff Brandsema who always
champion the Dash for their table! El Gaucho’s General Manager
Cooper Mills dazzled one lucky group with a table-side presentation
of El Gaucho’s famous flaming bananas foster. Because of the many
generous first steps people and companies like El Gaucho take, New
Beginnings is able to continue our work to support and empower
survivors and their children.
