ANNUAL REPORT
UNION STATION
HOMELESS SERVICES
OUR MISSION
SOLUTIONS TO END HOMELESSNESS
Helping men, women and children rebuild their
lives and end homelessness.
In 1973, a group of compassionate volunteers wanted to make a difference.
From a small storefront on Union Street in Pasadena, they welcomed the poor,
indigent and lonely into “Union Station,” a safe gathering place for those
living on the street.
OUR VALUES
We believe in:
¡ The dignity and value of every person
¡ Treating all people with respect
and compassion
¡ Providing the highest-quality services
From these initial humble offerings of coffee, donuts and friendship,
Union Station has grown. Today, Union Station is the San Gabriel Valley’s
largest and most comprehensive social service organization assisting
homeless men, women and children.
With your help, Union Station has transformed countless lives. Thank you for
being part of the solution.
to those who seek our assistance
¡ Honesty, transparency, and fairness
in all our dealings
¡ Prudent stewardship of our resources
¡ Continued improvement and efficiency
¡ Meriting the trust others place in us
¡ Collaborating effectively with

DEEPENING OUR IMPACT
During the past year, we have dramatically expanded our services and
deepened our impact. With our participation in new countywide programs such
as the Coordinated Entry System and Homeless Families Solutions System, we
have expanded our intake services from Pasadena to the entire San Gabriel Valley.
These new programs help us identify and rapidly house the most vulnerable
members of our community.
In the coming year, we look forward to continued growth: Homeless families will
find a home and new hope at Mar Vista Apartments, a 20–unit apartment building,
currently under construction; Holly Street Housing will help link homeless adults
and families to permanent supportive housing in Pasadena; and the new Housing
for Health program will connect people to the healthcare they need. We look
forward to sharing our progress with you in the coming year.
A MESSAGE
FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Dear Friends,
Since it started as a storefront
hospitality center 42 years ago,
Union Station Homeless Services has
helped thousands of individuals—
men, women and children—rebuild
their lives in a warm, caring and
non-sectarian environment. Marv
Gross’ remarkable leadership for 20 of
these years enabled Union Station to
find creative and successful ways to
address homelessness, a complex and
growing problem in America.
Of course, the backbone of Union
Station will always be its incredible
volunteers. We rely on our volunteers
for many roles, including helping
plan our fundraisers, serving meals,
greeting clients with smiles and
good cheer. Our volunteers are key in
conveying the message that the future
can be different from the past. For our
clients, encountering compassionate
volunteers is an important symbol that
our community cares about them.
I am one such volunteer. In 1991,
a good friend asked me if my family
would be responsible for organizing
a group to serve dinner once a month
to about 50 homeless clients at
Union Station’s new Adult Center on
Raymond Avenue in Pasadena. I was
familiar with the good work of Union
Station and said, “yes;” however,
I had no idea that 24 years later,
my husband and I would still be
serving dinners on the first Friday of
the month with this same group of
friends. Union Station has become a
big part of our lives.
This past year has been especially
gratifying for Union Station. Union
Station has been able to expand its
service area east from Pasadena as
far out as Pomona. This is a sign that
Union Station’s model of caring for
those experiencing homelessness has
been recognized as successful, not
only on a local level, but also on a
regional level. This growth is a result
of new government funding.
Despite this new government support,
65% of our funds come from private
sources. Your support is crucial to our
success. Only with your support can
Union Station continue its remarkable
work of caring for the most vulnerable
in our community.
Please read the following Annual
Report and be inspired by what your
generosity has done to change the
lives of so many.
Warm Regards,
Liz Trussell

A MESSAGE
FROM THE CEO
Once again, as a result of the
leadership of our Board of
Directors, the diligence and skill
of our outstanding staff, the daily
contributions of our dedicated
volunteers and the continuing
generosity of our supporters, we have
had an extremely productive year at
Union Station Homeless Services.
All of our many programs have been
full to capacity as our clients have
been actively engaged with our staff
in the process of rebuilding their lives.
We were thrilled to witness the April
groundbreaking of the Mar Vista
Apartments project, now under
construction through a partnership
between Union Station, National
Community Renaissance and the
City of Pasadena. With its expected
completion in Fall 2016, this beautiful
facility will consist of 20 units of
permanent supportive housing for
formerly homeless families.
Perhaps our most significant
accomplishment this year has been
our effort as the San Gabriel Valley
lead agency to implement the new
Coordinated Entry System (CES)
and Homeless Family Solutions
System (HFSS) programs. The goal
of these ground-breaking programs
is to significantly reduce chronic
homelessness among individuals,
families and veterans using the
Housing First model and other best
practices. With generous funding from
the Los Angeles Homeless Services
Authority, the United Way Home for
Good Funders’ Collaborative, Kaiser
3
Foundation and California Community
Foundation, CES and HFSS programs
are now being instituted throughout
Los Angeles County.
These programs are working well and
achieving their hoped-for results in
our area. Since July 1, 2014, our team
has conducted 1,549 assessments of
homeless individuals and families in
the San Gabriel Valley, including 829
folks who are chronically homeless
(without housing for a year or more),
and have placed 173 individuals,
including 39 veterans and 69 families,
in their own apartments. Once housed
staff continues to support them
with direct service and links to other
agencies to ensure that they can
maintain stability and continue their
path to a better life.
The early success of these major new
programs, coupled with the fact that
this year’s Pasadena Homeless Count
was at the lowest level (632) since
the count’s inception in 1992, gives us
the realistic hope that homelessness
can and will be substantially reduced
in the San Gabriel Valley region.
With your ongoing commitment and
generosity, we will continue our
intensive efforts to attain this goal in
the near future. Until then, thank you
for all the support and strength you
have given us to reach this day.
With warmest wishes,
Marvin M. Gross, CEO

INTAKE
COORDINATED ENTRY SYSTEM: The Coordinated Entry System (CES) is L.A. County’s primary point of entry for
adults seeking homeless services. Union Station coordinates the CES efforts of more than 40 social services agencies throughout the
San Gabriel Valley to end homelessness in our region by streamlining the process of finding housing for those who are chronically
homeless – with the goal of housing the most vulnerable people first.
FAMILY SOLUTIONS SYSTEM: Located in Duarte, the Family Solutions System is the primary point of entry for families
who are experiencing or at risk of becoming homeless to find support and resources to rebuild their lives. This programs allows families to be
connected to services and housing options within their own community.
For years, Vincent and his brother had lived in an apartment
together in Long Beach. Vincent’s brother, who was in the military,
had served two tours to Afghanistan and continued working as
a civilian for the military. When his brother’s job transferred to
Arizona, Vince decided not to go with him, but soon he realized he
could not afford the apartment on his own.
“I was living in an abandoned building after losing my home, my job,
and my car,” Vince recalls. “I was dealing with major depression
and schizoaffective disorder.”
Vince knew about the services at Union Station to help people
experiencing homelessness. “A lot of people don’t want to use
services for one reason or another,” says Vince. “I needed to focus
on getting the help I needed for myself.”
With access to showers, hot meals, and case management, Vince
received help to get his life together. Vince even qualified for a
Section 8 voucher to help him find affordable housing.
At first, the search for a new home was difficult for Vince.
“I thought I might lose my voucher,” he says, “but the staff
researched places back in Long Beach and was able to transfer my
voucher to get an apartment there.”
Vincent is in his own apartment and is beginning to feel more
stable. With help from Union Station, Vincent is working on
furnishing his new place to make it more like home. Today, his
doctor says Vince’s mental health has greatly improved.
“Life is a lot better. I have a roof over my head; I can care for myself,”
Vincent says. “Union Station has helped me overcome every
obstacle I had getting my life back on track.”

SHELTER
ADULT CENTER: The 56-bed Adult Center provides homeless men and women with safe shelter, meals and supportive services.
These services include case management, health care, recovery support, legal clinics, and life skills classes. This center also offers
community meals, showers and laundry programs.
FAMILY CENTER: The Family Center provides a nurturing home-like environment that offers shelter for up to 50 parents
and children each night. Residents receive healthy meals, shelter, case management, children’s enrichment activities, and life skills
classes such as parenting and money management. Supportive services are offered onsite to promote emotional and physical well-being
for each family.
Judy feels blessed to be the mother of three amazing sons
and to have a sister who is more than family – she’s a best friend.
Judy and her sister lived together since moving to California
from Louisiana about 18 years ago when Judy was fleeing from
domestic violence. Eventually, her then-husband followed Judy and
her boys to California to start fresh, but Judy soon discovered that
it was the same story, different part of the country.
In 2006, Judy decided once and for all that her family deserved a
better way of life. Judy found Union Station, and her chance to start
over. “Being accepted at Union Station was the beginning of our
healing.” Judy remembers. “We were given every tool imaginable to
help us rebuild our lives.”
Union Station provided Judy with more than food and temporary
shelter. She received services that helped her rebuild her life and
become self-sufficient. Judy recalls how she and her sons felt
nurtured and protected, and how no need was missed or ignored.
Nine years later, after staying at Union Station, Judy has just
graduated with a Master’s Degree in Human Development and her
family continues to thrive. Her oldest son is applying to Medical
school; her middle son hopes to pursue his PhD after college;
and her youngest received a culinary arts scholarship and is
interning at Universal Studios. All of them are very active in their
church and community, and Judy even volunteers two days a week
at our Adult Center.
“Our family continues to be grateful, thankful and hopeful for an
even better future ahead,” Judy says. “Union Station has given us
the tools to do anything but fail.”
“We were given every tool
imaginable to help us
rebuild our lives.”

HOUSING
CENTENNIAL PLACE: There is no substitute for a door that locks and a place to call home. In 2010, Union Station proudly
expanded its continuum of care by partnering with Adobe Communities and the City of Pasadena to provide onsite supportive services
at Centennial Place, a permanent supportive housing facility for low-income adults. With 142 single room occupancy (SRO) apartments,
residents are given a place of their own to call home. Case management as well as health services are offered to help residents regain the
skills, stability and confidence needed to rebuild their lives and retain permanent housing.
EUCLID VILLA: To help families transition out of homeliness, Euclid Villa offers 14 affordable apartments with on-site case
management and supportive services for its residents. Families pay 30% of their income towards rent and live in their own private
apartments, while gaining the skills and stability to stay permanently housed.
For most of his life, Larry has been in and out of jail. Larry says he
doesn’t have contact with most of his siblings, since they are still
a part of a lifestyle he wants to avoid. “My past is my past, and I
want to keep moving forward,” says Larry. So when he was released
from jail in February, Larry found himself with nowhere to go and no
support system.
Larry’s behavior while living on the streets placed him on suicidewatch at Huntington Hospital. It was from there Larry was sent to
Union Station Homeless Services and began working with the staff
of our new Housing for Health program made possible by the LA
Department of Health Services.
The Housing for Health staff and his case manager helped Larry
understand and learn what he needed to do to get settled. “I got
my ID, Social Security card, and birth certificate,” says Larry. “They
helped me get things organized that I otherwise wouldn’t have
known I needed to get housing.”
Larry has now been out of jail for over 6 months – the longest
time he has ever been out in his entire life. He now wants to be an
advocate for troubled kids. “I understand the things they got to go
through,” Larry says, “I want them to do what I’m doing – push
forward to do something bigger.”
Larry lives in his own apartment in Downtown L.A., which he found
with the help of Union Station. Now, he is surrounded by a great
support system, which includes his wonderful case manager and
new neighbors who look out for him.
“I try to tell people now who are on the streets, ‘If you can, try your
best to get into Union Station – it’s a good program,’” Larry says
proudly. “You gotta have the heart to get where you are going. When
the right people got your back, you’ll get there.”
“You gotta have the heart to

HOLLY STREET HOUSING: The “Housing First” model utilized at Holly Street Housing allows our staff to help individuals
and families find rental housing – with the goal of housing the most vulnerable people first. By providing a link to vital resources in the
community, Holly Street Housing provides the tools necessary to find permanent supportive housing. Throughout the process, wrap around
case management is offered to help promote an improved quality of life.
HOUSING FOR HEALTH: Union Station’s staff proudly partners with the LA County Department of Health Services in this
countywide effort to end homelessness, reduce the use of expensive health care resources, and improve the health of vulnerable men and
women. The Housing for Health program’s scatter site and permanent supportive housing buildings throughout the San Gabriel Valley
provide onsite specialized care services to chronically homeless people.
Dylan is a family man. But for most of his life, Dylan’s struggle
with drug and alcohol abuse got him in trouble with the law and
prevented him from finding work.
“I wasn’t keeping my mind together,” says Dylan. “I graduated from
9 different drug rehab programs, but there was no follow-up or
continued help available to me afterwards.”
When Dylan relapsed into his old habits 10 years ago, his
wife left him because of his addictions. “I was bouncing back
and forth between living at my mom’s house and church,” Dylan
recalls. “I let my children stay with their mother – I was sleeping
in parks and cars.”
Dylan was losing hope for himself and his future, and knew he
needed to find a way to stay on track. He found the support he
needed through Union Station. “Union Station gives people so many
chances,” Dylan says. “They don’t give up on you and that’s what
people need – they stick with you.”
Thanks to Union Station, Dylan was able to apply for an apartment
at Euclid Villa, Union Station’s permanent supportive housing
facility for families. “I’ve grown closer with my three kids. We have
a great relationship and I’m now in the right frame of mind.”
Today, Dylan lives with his children and his relationship with his
wife is getting better. “She visits us and we work together with
the kids. I’m able to take care of my children constantly because I
always have help from Union Station.”
After working with the staff at Union Station, Dylan already has
received a few job offers. The experience has changed his outlook
on life. “Look what I have accomplished! I have a great relationship
with my kids, my family is getting better, and soon I will find work. I
have hope for things now.”
“They don’t give up
on you – they stick
with you.”

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
SOURCES: Employment is a vital step is building one’s self-confidence and independence. Sources encourages participants to
look beyond obtaining entry-level or “survival jobs” and promotes continued career advancement. Each year, over 170 work-ready adults
participate in our Sources Career Development program, which is designed to meet the needs of homeless and very low income job seekers.
The program offers career development workshops, one-on-one career counseling, job search assistance and ongoing job retention services.
We help people find great jobs, but we also help local businesses find excellent employees.
Originally from El Salvador, Horacio came to the U.S. as a political
refugee seeking asylum and work. Horacio’s own experience as a
migrant shaped his educational path.
for the LGBT community. Horacio became a University of California
President’s Postdoctoral Scholar, which allowed him to pursue an
academic career at UC Berkley as a tenured professor.
He attended UCLA for his Bachelor’s Degree and was later accepted
to UC Berkley for his Master’s program. As he pursued his Ph.D,
Horacio gained recognition for his work on immigration specifically
“I was a well–known academic,” Horacio says. “But it was a lot of
pressure to be successful.” Horacio was under constant stress, and
when he was hospitalized for 10 days after an unusually high fever
led to an embolism, he knew he was at a breaking point.
“I was suffering from depression and anxiety, alcohol abuse, and
joblessness,” said Horacio. “I had bad experiences living on the
streets and emergency shelters on Skid Row.”
Horacio came to Union Station in December 2014, and life has
improved “100% beyond expectations.” He used many of the
services provided by Union Station, but found his niche with the
Sources Career Development program.
“The staff is caring and top notch,” Horacio says of Sources. “It is a
safe haven for productive work and communal support among the
homeless and those in transition.”
Today, Horacio has an apartment of his own, job prospects and is
focused on simplifying his life and relaxing.
“When you feel down and you’re homeless, you need a tough spirit
to survive,” says Horacio. “Sometimes, you survive with the help
of others. I will forever be thankful of the life-changing work of
Sources and its amazing staff!”
“It is a safe haven for
productive work and communal
support among the homeless
and those in transition.”

VOLUNTEER &
COMMUNITY
PROGRAMS
“There is no human
condition our volunteers
shy away from.
Everyone is accepted.
It’s beautiful.”
– Liz Shelby,
Housing Liaison,
staff for 27 years
Union Station volunteers have enriched the lives of community members in
need for 42 years, and continue to be the backbone of the Union Station family.
Each year, over 2,500 volunteers provide a village of support to individuals
and families experiencing homelessness, so that they may thrive on their path
through our programs and on to the next chapter of their lives. The generosity of
our rich and diverse volunteer base allows for the agency to thrive at all levels.
GIFTS OF TIME
This year, volunteers contributed a total of 35,724 hours of service, valued
at $940,970. We have volunteers of all ages providing and serving meals,
hosting enrichment activities, answering our phones, assisting with events
and much more!
GIFTS OF GOODS
New in-kind donations (personal care items, school supplies, home essentials,
food, etc.) valued at about $231,638 were donated to meet the needs of
the clients.
Our Adopt-a-Meal groups provided over 60,000 delicious hot meals and our Sack
Lunch groups put together over 16,000 nutritious lunches for the children and
adult residents.
Union Station’s Young Leaders Society (YLS) was established in 2013 by Board
member Grace Kim, along with a strong executive team of passionate young
professionals and volunteers who are dedicated to the mission of Union Station.
The group has since grown to over 70 members of highly skilled individuals who
volunteer together, network and support the community. This year, YLS organized
Union Station’s 1st annual Rockin’ for the Homeless 5k Run/Walk, raising over
$26,000 in unrestricted funds and laying the groundwork for this family-friendly
event to grow every year.

Events:
We Believe in the Power of Partnership
There is a lot of serious work being done for those who are experiencing homelessness in our community. But we find ways to have fun while
also fulfilling our mission to help people rebuild their lives. At Union Station Homeless Services, we gather with old friends, dress up, and
even rock out—all in the name of raising money to end homelessness. Here are highlights from this year’s recent events.
Evening for the Station
On October 29, 2014, Union Station Homeless
Services and MUSE/IQUE teamed up yet again for a
genre-bending evening of entertainment for a great
cause. The 15th annual An Evening for the Station
benefit concert featured a Beatles/Bash by
MUSE/IQUE, the “counter conventional” orchestra,
at Noor in Pasadena.
Led by Maestra Rachael Worby, MUSE/IQUE is a
deconstructed orchestra made up of virtuoso
musicians, artists, creators and guests. The event
explored the brilliance of the Beatles with “mashups” designed by Worby and featuring orchestra
musicians with rock, pop, country and gospel artists.
Many thanks for all our supporters and sponsors for
making this evening a huge success!
Rockin’ for the Homeless
5k Run/Walk
Rockin’ for the Homeless 5K Run/Walk and Kiddie
Dash had over 250 runners and walkers in its
inaugural year! Created in collaboration with Union
Station’s Young Leaders Society, participants were
encouraged to come dressed in their favorite rockstar
gear as they completed the course around Arcadia
County Park.
Combining exercise with a rockin’ good time, this
family friendly event also hosted a Kiddie Dash and
obstacle course, with medals and prizes for the all
who participated. Runners, walkers, volunteers and
onlookers alike enjoyed the fun music provided by
Head Lite View, and post race treats from food trucks
Kona Ice and Pie and Burger.
This first time-event raised over $26,000 in support
of Union Station’s life changing programs and
services.
A huge thank you to the Young Leaders Society for
their leadership and to our event sponsors! We
look forward to the second annual Rockin for the
Homeless 5K in Spring 2016!

A Place to Call Home Gala
On Saturday, May 9th Union Station Homeless
Services took a new spin on A Place to Call Home
benefit gala – in the form of a late night talk show
starring the evening’s honorees: Charlie & Rene
Chiara and Jim & Tina Hart. Over 400 guests walked
the red carpet at the Langham Huntington for the
“Tonight Show” style event.
Master of Ceremonies, Gildart Jackson (The Young
and the Restless, General Hospital) played the
late-night talk show host for the night’s program,
with actor and producer Blake Adams Bailey as
the show’s announcer. The evening’s entertainment
included musical guest Melora Hardin (The Office,
Transparent), who performed an original song with
Byron Miller and the Psycho Bass Band, the official
house band for the night. The event raised a recordbreaking $460,000 in support of Union Station’s vital
programs.
A special thanks to our Event Chair, Margo Kidushim,
and the entire gala committee for their tireless
efforts and work to make this year the best gala yet.
We are very grateful to all our volunteers for their
time and energy.
A very special thanks to all the businesses,
organizations and individuals who attended,
donated funds, or contributed to the event and
our silent auction.
DINNERS–IN–THE–PARK
More than 2,000 volunteers registered for
Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners-in-the-Park, a
Pasadena holiday tradition. Decked out in hair nets,
aprons and gloves, volunteers served over 7,500
meals of turkey and ham and all of the traditional
holiday sides!
Union Station is incredibly grateful for the support
of our community partners and generous supporters.
You all make this event possible year after year.
Thank you!
Special Thanks to our very generous Dinners-in-the
Park Sponsors:

LEAVING A LEGACY:
MITCHELL KAUFFMAN &
JOANNE MORAN
For Mitchell Kauffman and Joanne Moran, it was a
natural decision to make a planned gift to Union
Station. Mitchell and Joanne have considerable
family history with Union Station Homeless Services.
Both have served as members of our Board of
Directors – Joanne over a decade ago, and Mitchell
more recently for the past eight months. “We
believe in the organization’s effectiveness,” says
Mitchell. “Union Station has the staffing, focus and
commitment to make an important impact.”
Mitchelll & Joanne believe strongly in the work of
Union Station and the impact it can have in the
community. Mitchelll encourages others to consider
making a planned gift. “Be a part of the elimination
of homelessness locally.”
