In an era where cars are driven chaufferlessly, where technology has
reached a point beyond imagination and man sees himself presented
with endless opportunities, it is still in the simple things that we thrive.
Simple things like a flower, the excitement of an invitation or a glittery
mask. Special things like calling a regular day the day of love, or
dressing up to live a fantasy in the name of Carnival. February, in only
28 days, gives us all that and much more.
For history proves that it is in hardship that we find victory; February
embraces winter elegantly, and The Hague becomes full of possibilities,
even on the coldest days. It transforms into a landscape of frozen
canals to stroll around and see the city from a different angle.
The events venues are finally awaken from the estupor of the holidays,
offer new and exiciting activities so please be welcome and read our
shortlist to the best of them. From top level sports to enchanting music,
including a wide variety of things to do for the little ones.
I take this opportunity to remind you that our Library is open for you as
a starting point for that holiday you are planning in 2013, the business
trip you need to take or your next move. From travel books to career
and development titles, feel welcome to use it as one of your resources.
For now, enjoy the reading our Newsletter and let February bring its
magic into your home.

FOCUS ON February
Page 6
Magic, unique February
It is the shortest, most romantic and for some, funniest month
in theyear. Even non-enthusiasts have to recognize that February
has something of magic to it. Along with January though, they were
the last two months to be added to the calendar since according to
the Romans, winter was a “monthless” period –it does seem
endless sometimes-. So not until 713 BC they became real, thanks to
King Numa Pompilius.
Every four years we
experience a “leap year”,
giving February 29 days and
those born on that date a
spectacular birthday.
Lunar calendars though
add one extra month instead
of an extra day.
Such is the case of the
Chinese, Hebrew and Hindu
calendars among others
International events to consider in February
Super Bowl XLVII, 3/2 US
Why? For it brings the funniest, most creative
and most expensive commercials in the year.
And of course, to watch top-level American football
ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament, 11-17/2 NL
Why? For it is one of the biggest indoor pro tournaments
in the world, plus it happens right around the corner!
Rio’s Carnival, 10-16/02 Brazil
Why? Rio is the undisputed capital of Carnival,
with over 500,000 tourists visiting each year
and a well-preserved tradition
Valentine’s Day. 14/2 Various locations
Why? For sharing love with friends does not need
excuses but a reminder is always welcome
The Oscars Ceremony. 24/2 US
Why? Because it is a tribute to cinema plus we can
always agree to disagree with the Academy
Carnival in NL
Shall I wear a costume?
Going back in history, the oldest record of Carnival –or “Vastenavond”- in NL is from
1385, from the area of ‘s-Hertogenbosch (or Den Bosch). Even today this city in the
North Brabant province changes its name to “Oeteldonk” during the festivities! Visit
www.oeteldonk.org. In February 2013 you can discover the local version of Carnival
thru popular traditions like “Prince Carnival”, a title given by the people to a local
personality during the celebrations. From 11 to 14 February a masquerade will take
over cities like Maastricht, which sees a grand procession of Venetian-style costumes
and marching bands flooding its streets. So this is the place to be if you want to experience Carnival the fun Dutch way. For a complete view of the program from this
highly touristic city please visit www.vvv-maastricht.eu

fun business. Their characters appear in over 100 shows a year at theaters and

Eco-Cool brands to look for in 2013
When it comes to eco fashion or high tech do not necessarily play a role in the equation. But thanks to long
standing campaigns it appears that finally recycling is another items on the shelf next to high end designs. Do not
miss labels like recently launched Ekocycle, the result of mega mind artist Will.I.Am (from the Black Eyed Peas
band) working for Coca Cola. The idea is simple: recycle the plastic from the millions of bottles and caps, make it
useful again in the shape of… that is when genius meets coolness. The recycled material branded as Ekocycle is been used
by Levi’s for one of their new jeans models; you can also find it in a case for your phone, as well as in a pair of
headphones, and many other products.
Dutch brand Philips has launched an eco friendly coffee machine that uses 50% recycled plastics. The Senseo
Viva Café Eco will not only leave you with a nice taste in your mouth but also with a ncie sense of helping the
environment. This is one of the examples of the company’s EcoVision 5 project to endorse a green attitude.
Awamaki Lab is a Peruvian non-profit that serves as channel between indigenous Quechua weavers whose
textiles are praised around the world, and young fashion designers. The resulting product is unique-eco friendly
collections which cater those in real connection with the environment who support recycling to its maximum level,
which is the real production cycle. The organization ensures the Quechua get access to better resources and aid
thus endorsing a valuable tradition and giving designers a raw, honest material to start up their creations.
