DANCE
The hula is another Hawaiian cultural icon,
preserving important stories and traditions
in an expression of happiness and fun.
The ancient form of the hula (Hula kahiko)
is accompanied by dramatic chants and
percussion. Modern hula (Hula ‘auana) is
far more colourful, with guitars or ‘ukuleles
providing the rhythm.

The giving of a flower lei — one of the
most well-known Hawaiian customs — is
synonymous with friendship and hospitality.
The ancient Hawaiians used feathers and
shells, while the modern lei is made of
fresh flowers.
MUSIC
Music is an important part of Hawaiian
culture. Today you’ll hear variations of
Hawaiian music that are as diverse as the
islands’ mix of cultures — everything from
rock ‘n roll and rap, to jazz and a Hawaiian
form of reggae known as ‘Jawaiian’.
Hawaiian music is celebrated in festivals and
one very popular event is the annual ‘Ukulele
Festival in Waikīkī (July). Brought to Hawai‘i
by Portuguese immigrants in the late 19th
century, the ‘uke’ is still a fundamental part of
the musical landscape, not simply on stage
but also at family picnics and on the beach.
Hawai‘i Island’s Kona Slack Key Festival
(September) pays tribute to a uniquely
local way of playing the guitar — another
Hawaiian music staple. Slack key refers to the
‘slackened’ or loosened tuning technique that
reflects the relaxed local culture.

WET & WILD
JUMP INTO WONDERND!
If you’re enthralled by wildlife, Hawai‘i delivers unforgettable encounters that will leave you spellbound.
From night snorkels with gentle manta rays to swimming with wild dolphins and extraordinary
whale-watching excursions, embrace Hawai‘i’s underwater world.
SEE A 4O-TON BALLERINA
Visit Hawai‘i from November to April — they’re prime whale-watching
months, when protected humpback whales (locally known as kohola)
migrate to Hawai‘i’s warmer waters. From Kaua‘i’s Kīlauea Lighthouse
or O‘ahu’s Makapu‘u Lighthouse see whales perform tail slaps, spy
hops and other playful moves. Or head to Hawai‘i Island’s Kohala
Coast where the whales put on quite a show. On Moloka‘i and Lāna‘i
the best vantage spots are on the south shore. If you’d like to take a
more active role in helping these majestic mammals, join the Pacific
Whale Foundation for the Great Whale Count or World Whale Day,
both on Maui. A large number of whale-watching excursions are
available.
O‘ahu’s Wild Dolphin Foundation reports:
‘Hawaiian ancestors lived deeply interconnected to each other, the
land and the sea. Dolphin (Nai‘a) were considered by some to be
one form of the spiritual manifestation of the god, Kanaloa. Our very
existence depends upon healthy oceans. Dolphins and other cetaceans
represent a critical piece to this huge ecosystem and in a world where
so much that is wild and free has already been lost to us, we must
leave these beautiful mammals free to swim as they will and must.’

Hawai‘i is home to spinner, bottlenose, spotted and rough-toothed
dolphins. Several companies in Hawai‘i offer dolphin-watching cruises
that sometimes include a snorkelling option. The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration advises swimmers to stay at least
46 metres away from wild dolphins and turtles (see guidelines at nmfs.
noaa.gov/pr/education/hawaii). However, while you are not allowed
to approach wild dolphins, they may choose to approach boats and
swimmers. If you’re planning to go on a dolphin-watching cruise, bring
binoculars. Besides dolphins, you might also spot green sea turtles
(honu), flying fish (malolo) and whales (kohola) from November to April.

There are places in Hawai‘i where the water is so clear it’s like
snorkelling in glass. Beneath the sun-kissed surface lies a glittering
world where butterfly fish flutter from coral to coral and rainbow-coloured
wrasse scoot by. Every island has its own undersea community.
Kaua‘i’s Makua Beach, also known as ‘Tunnels’, is famous for its
expansive lagoon. Five km off Maui, the crescent-shaped Molokini
crater boasts more than 250 species of tropical fish. On Lāna‘i,
Hulopo‘e Bay is protected from currents, while just off KalokoHonokohau on Hawai‘i Island, night snorkelling with manta rays
feels almost magical. A number of tour operators feature snorkelling
excursions to ‘turtle towns’ or ‘turtle cleaning stations’ where turtles
like to congregate to have their shells cleaned by surgeonfish and
other algae eaters (who feed on the algae build-up on turtle shells).

AND SUPPORTING SMALL FARMS
By connecting directly with favourite local food producers,
Hawaiian chefs ensure that they receive superior produce,
full of nutritional value, and grown in safe optimal conditions.
LOOKING AFTER THE LAND
Mālama ‘Āina (caring for the land) is a belief that’s deeply
rooted in Hawaiian culture. In the days of Hawaiian chiefs,
land was divided into ahupua‘a (mini eco-systems) and
each parcel was a self-contained land management system
in which farmland, fresh water and ocean resources were
carefully maintained. Today, the renewed interest in
sustainable agriculture is yielding delicious surprises
throughout the state.
EATING HAWAI‘I
Visitors can now follow favourite ingredients to their source.
Witness the entire farm-to-table process by taking walking
tours of farms, gardens, ranches and pasturelands. Visit an
Upcountry farm on Maui to pick sweet Maui onion, take in a
taro farm on Kaua‘i, tour a coffee farm on Hawai‘i Island and,
throughout the islands, embrace the lavish farmers’ markets.

Local palates have been
;%#
immigrants from around the globe
so it’s not surprising that Hawai‘i
is a melting pot of countless
ethnic specialties and some local
delicacies that are more-or-less
exclusive to Hawai‘i. In particular,
discover countless enticing and
creative variations on traditional
American, Chinese, Filipino,
Japanese, Korean, Polynesian and
Portuguese dishes — right across
the Hawaiian Islands.
POPUR LOCAL
DISHES INCLUDE:
‘Haupia’ — a traditional coconut-milk-based Hawaiian dessert.
‘Loco-Moco’— invented originally to satisfy the hunger of
high-energy surfers, this dish is perfect for big appetites! The
high-carb, high-protein hit combines steamed rice, a fried egg,
a hamburger patty and gravy.
Lomi Salmon (pronounced ‘low-me’) — a seafood dish that
comprises salted diced salmon with tomatoes, crushed ice
and spring onions.
Malasada — a hot, sweet Portuguese doughnut. Delicious!
MOBILE EATERIES
The food truck craze is sweeping the
Islands. Look out for a superb range of
lunch (and sometimes dinner) wagons
serving fresh, affordable and delicious
meals — from Korean fare to Mexican
fusion and gourmet sandwiches.
CHEAP EATS
Along main roads, look for roadside
stands with long lines — an indication
of delicious food at a reasonable
price. From hamburgers to noodle
soup and plate lunches, you’ll be
able to indulge in some of the local
favourites.
‘Poke’ (pronounced ‘po-kay’) — a delicious raw fish salad
usually featuring yellowfin tuna (ahi) flavoured with soy sauce,
sesame oil, kukui nut and seaweed. Give it a try!
‘Poi’ — a Hawaiian staple food made from the taro plant.
Poi is produced by mashing cooked taro and adding water to
achieve a paste. It’s definitely an acquired taste!
‘Pupu’ (appetisers) — a wide range of creative platters are
available — from ‘poke’ (salad) to sushi.
‘Saimin’ (pronounced ‘sigh-min’) — these thin noodles are
often served with spring onion, shrimp, fish cake (kamaboko)
or sliced Chinese roast pork (char siu).
Shave ice — finely shaved snow cones in exotic flavours, with
a choice of ice cream or azuki (red) beans underneath.
By the way ... the Hawaiian
word for ‘delicious’ is ‘ono’!

famous Tokyo fish auction, where large fish are sold individually.
In most other parts of the world, fish are sold to wholesalers who
generally control pricing. However, the United Fishing Agency in
Honolulu operates on a different business model which ensures
individual fishermen receive fair prices. In return, buyers representing retailers, wholesalers and restaurants gain access to
the freshest fish. Bidding is conducted in an open, competitive
forum, with higher-quality fish scoring higher prices. Fishermen
are paid the same day for their catch. It’s an innovative system
that has been operating since 1952.

O‘AHU TRAVEL TIPS
BUDGET TRAVEL
If you’re on a budget and like making
friends, stay at a Waikīkī-based hostel and
then take ‘TheBus’ to a North Shore hostel
to explore O‘ahu’s countryside.
DRESS
Temperatures are cooler in the evenings
so pack a sweater and long pants.
TOURS
Tours can be organised through your travel
agent prior to departure or via the tours
desk at your hotel. Alternatively, a wide
variety of activities can be booked directly
with operators who are set up in key tourist
locations across the Island.
SURF SAFETY
Do your research
Hawai‘i beaches are some of the most
beautiful in the world. They are also
among the most dangerous because of
large waves and strong currents.
Visit hawaibeachsafety.com/oahu to find
a list of recommended beaches for the
days on which you wish to swim.
The site will also highlight active alerts,
beaches temporarily closed due to
dangerous conditions and lifeguardpatrolled beaches.
The goal of Hawaii Beach Safety is to
give beach users timely and accurate
information so that they can select a beach
destination that matches their ocean skill
level.
You are encouraged to use this site to
make an aware and informed decision
based on the latest information.
When you get to the beach, be sure to
check with lifeguards regarding the latest
conditions and hazards. Lifeguards are
stationed at the most popular beaches.
Remember, it is far better to recognise that
a beach is too dangerous and move to
another, than to attempt entering the ocean
and risk injury.
North Shore beaches
Please note that on the North Shore during
the winter months — from November to
February — the massive ocean waves
can swell up to nine metres or more so
stay onshore. These conditions are for
experienced surfers only.
Stretching for more than 11 kms, the
beaches of the North Shore host the
world’s premier surfing competitions during
the peak winter months, including the
Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (November
to December). Stroll in the thick sands
of Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach (Banzai
Pipeline) and Sunset Beach — but just
leave the surfing to the pros over winter.
However, from May to September the
waves subside, creating a more tranquil
atmosphere for surfing, swimming and
sunbathing.
Hanauma Bay
This popular family-friendly beach, located
in O‘ahu’s south east, is closed every
Tuesday. Entry is US$7.50 per person.
TRANSPORT
O‘ahu offers a comprehensive public
transport network incorporating

of other locations.
Resort, shopping centre and airport

Visitors to O‘ahu can buy a four-day

WEATHER
Weather can vary across O‘ahu. It is
generally drier on the leeward (west)
side and wetter on the windward
(east) coast. O‘ahu experiences two
seasons:
• winter (November-April) when
temperatures range from 21-29˚C
• summer when the temperatures can
reach up to 33°C.
The good news is that the prevailing
trade winds keep temperatures
comfortable year-round.

PEARL HARBOR’S 5 HISTORIC SITES
Today, you can visit the USS Arizona
Memorial — built over the sunken hull of
the battleship — to learn about this historic
attack and pay your respects to the brave
soldiers who fell that day.
USS Arizona Memorial tours run every
15 minutes from 7.30 am to 3 pm. The
ticketed tour is free and includes a movie
on the attack on Pearl Harbor and a short
boat ride to the Memorial. The tour is
approximately 75 minutes and is open to
all ages. The National Park Services’ USS
Arizona Memorial Tour is well worthwhile
and can be purchased from a stand in the
courtyard of the Visitor Center (see map
opposite on page 57).
BATTLESHIP MISSOURI
MEMORIAL
General Macarthur accepted the
unconditional Japanese surrender that
ended WWII on 2 September 1945 on the
Surrender Deck of the Battleship Missouri.
Now located at Pearl Harbor’s historic
Battleship Row, the massive ‘Mighty Mo’ is a
living museum, with exhibits spanning three
wars and five decades of service.
Explore the decks, three football fields long
and twenty storeys tall, and take a tour of the
restricted areas.
USS BOWFIN SUBMARINE
MUSEUM & PARK
The USS Bowfin was stationed in Australia
and was one of the most decorated
submarines during World War II. Today,
visitors can explore the Submarine Museum
‘History of Undersea Warfare’ exhibit and
then tour inside the USS Bowfin. Make

TAKE THE LEGENDARY ‘ROAD TO HANA’.
ALLOW SIX TO EIGHT HOURS FOR THIS SUPERBLY SCENIC DRIVE
OR BREAK THE JOURNEY HALFWAY WITH A NIGHT IN HANA.
START
3

5
Start early, taking Route 36 from Kahului to Ho‘okipa Beach
Park — the perfect place to swim and sunbathe in summer.
In winter, conditions change dramatically so stay onshore and
watch the pro-windsurfers race. Please take note of all warning
signs for your safety.
Road to Hāna
Continue along Hāna Highway (also known as the ‘Road to
Hāna’). With more than 600 hairpin turns and 54 narrow bridges,
the famous road is more a life lesson than a thoroughfare. Slow
down and enjoy the journey. Allow at least three hours each way
and only confident drivers should take on this highway.
Wai‘ānapanapa State Park
Along the Hāna Highway you’ll find Wai‘ānapanapa State Park
(just past Hāna Airport) with a beautiful black-sand beach and
a coastal hiking trail. Use caution if swimming as the currents
can be strong.
6
7
Haleakalā National Park
The Kīpahulu side of the National Park features lush rainforests,
a visitor centre and hiking trails. If hiking, be prepared for hot,
humid weather year-round and wear sturdy, closed shoes.
Discover waterfalls, sweeping coastal views and you may even
spot sea turtles, monk seals, dolphins, seabirds and (between
December and April) humpback whales! Guided hikes, talks
and cultural demonstrations are available.
Head back to Kahului
Retrace your course along the northern coast. If you wish to
return by the southern Pi‘ilani Highway (Route 31) it is vital to
check the terms of your car hire contract before you depart as
not all car rental companies provide insurance cover for travel
on this route.
FINISH
Hāna
Re-join Hāna Highway and continue east for 10 minutes until
you reach Hāna — a magical little hamlet, where isolation is the
source of its charm. Make sure you fill up the car with petrol here.
Pools of ‘Ohe‘o
Haleakalā National Park stretches from Upcountry Maui to
the ocean in the east and the Pools of ‘Ohe‘o, our next stop.
Just a half-hour drive from Hāna, they comprise dozens
of beautiful pools fed by freshwater streams from Maui’s
renowned Haleakalā volcano.

The Hawaiian Islands: Hawai‘i Island
SPOTLIGHT ON
HAWAI‘I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
HOME TO ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST ACTIVE VOLCANOES
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is the home
of Kīlauea volcano, one of the most active
volcanoes on earth. Founded in 1916, the
Park encompasses 134,760 hectares from the
summit of Maunaloa to the sea. Here you’ll
find 241 km of hiking trails through volcanic
craters, scalded deserts and rainforests in
addition to a museum, a walk-in lava tube and
two active volcanoes: Maunaloa, which last
erupted in 1984; and Kīlauea which has been
erupting since 3 January 1983.
The extraordinary natural diversity of the park
was recognised in 1980 when it was named a
World Biosphere site by UNESCO and in 1987
when the park was again honoured as a World
Heritage site. Kīlauea is sometimes called
‘the world’s only drive-in volcano.’ This prolific
volcano currently produces 101,139 to 496,961
cubic metres of lava per day — enough to
resurface a 32 km long, two-lane road daily.
Here are other essential Park attractions:
Kilauea Visitor Center
(Open daily 7.45 am to 5 pm)
Begin your visit at the Kilauea Visitor Center
where you can watch an hourly film from 9 am
to 4 pm to introduce you to the park. Pick up
maps, learn about the park’s hikes and get the
latest eruption updates here.
Crater Rim Drive
The 17 km drive circles Kīlauea Caldera.
Driving around this loop will take you to the
park’s main attractions: the Kīlauea Overlook,
Jaggar Museum, Halema‘uma‘u Crater,
Devastation Trail, Kīlauea Iki Crater Overlook
and the Thurston Lava Tube.

QUICK FACTS
What: a huge national park and home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes
Where: 45 minutes’ drive south of Hilo on the east coast of Hawai‘i Island
More information: nps.gov/havo
Thomas A Jaggar Museum
(Open daily 8.30 am to 5 pm)
Thomas A Jaggar pioneered the study of
volcanology at Kīlauea. Here you can find
geologic displays and videos about volcanoes.
Halema‘uma‘u Crater
Steam vents plume from this massive crater
— known as the home of Pele, the volcano
goddess.
Thurston Lava Tube (Nahuku)
Walk through a 500-year old lava cave formed
when an underground channel of molten
lava drained from its cooled walls forming a
massive hollow chamber. A tropical rainforest
awaits at the end of the tube.
Pu‘u‘Ō‘ō Vent
Currently Kīlauea lava activity isn’t centered
in its caldera (the large depression at the
top of the volcano) but at the Pu‘u‘Ō‘ō Vent
in the East Rift Zone. Sometimes Pu‘u‘Ō‘ō
lava floods underground tubes that empty
dramatically into the sea. If your timing is
right, you can watch this spectacle at the end
of Chain of Craters Road or from the new
Kalapana viewing site outside the Park.
Chain of Craters Road
(Ranger station opens daily 10.00 am to 9 pm)
Veering south of Crater Rim Drive is Chain
of Craters Road. This 1,128 metre drive
eventually ends where a lava flow has literally
overtaken the road.
Volcano House Hotel
Overlooking Halema‘uma‘u Crater, the hotel
has been operating since 1846. Even Mark
Twain once stayed here. The hotel has recently
undergone renovations.
GENERAL TIPS
What to pack: Bring food and water
since there are limited facilities in the
park. Dress appropriately with shoes, long
pants and a jacket. Bring binoculars and a
flashlight at night.
Safety: Please stay on marked routes and
heed warning signs. There is a danger of
harmful volcanic gases and unstable land
in these areas.
Planning: Allow plenty of time for your
trip. To maximise your experience
consider staying at Volcano House, in
nearby Volcano Village, or Hilo (only 45
minutes away). The drive to and from
Kona is about three hours each way.

TRAVEL TIPS
AIRPORTS
TRANSPORT
Visitors from Australia fly into Honolulu
International Airport (HNL) on O‘ahu first
and then take a short 35-40 minute flight to
Hawai‘i Island. The island offers two airports
— Kona International Airport (KOA) in the
west and Hilo International Airport (ITO) in
the east.
We recommend a rental car for flexibility
and ease, and strongly suggest booking
before you arrive. Remember to drive on the
right-hand side of the road. Guided tours also
operate across the island.
GREEN SEA TURTLES
These creatures are protected so do not
touch them or venture too close.
HEALTH CAUTION
Volcanic gases can be dangerous to those
with pulmonary disorders such as asthma so
please seek advice from your doctor if you
have such a condition and are planning to
visit Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.
WHALE WATCHING
At sea level, the average summer temperature
is 29°C and 26°C in winter. Trade winds assist
the comfort level year-round. Pack a light,
waterproof jacket for hiking or exploring the
tropical rainforests of Hilo and the Hāmākua
Coast and warmer clothes if you plan to visit
the uplands of Waimea and the higher
elevations of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

Begin the day travelling north along the Kona-Kohala Coast
on the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway (Hwy 19) to KalokoHonokohau National Historic Park located on the ma kai
(ocean) side between mile marker 96 and 97. The 470 hectare
national park was established in 1978 to preserve, protect and

Turn right upon leaving the park, backtracking for 3 km until
heading east on the Mamalahoa Highway. After 15 minutes

Waipi‘o Valley
Continue east to Honoka‘a. Look for the left-turn sign to

Lookout, a beautiful photo spot with a black-sand beach below.
This fertile valley is 1.6 km across, 8 km deep and surrounded
by cliffs up to 610 metres high. Guided tours, hikes and
horseback rides are available. The valley is extremely steep
so stay at the lookout unless you have a 4WD.
Stay overnight in Hilo or return to the Kona side of the island via
Kaumana Drive to Saddle Road (Daniel K Inouye Hwy 200) for a
drive across the centre of the island (allow two hours).

town of artists and galleries in Kona coffee country — Kona.

HAWAI‘I’S VOLCANOES
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is one of the few
places in the world where visitors can come face-to-face
with an active volcano. Currently three volcanoes are
active in Hawai‘i. On Hawai‘i Island you’ll find Maunaloa
and Kīlauea in Hawai‘i
Volcanoes National Park.
Maunaloa last erupted
in 1984 and Kīlauea
has been continuously
erupting since 1983.
Lō‘ihi is located
underwater off the
southern coast of Hawai‘i
Island. Today, Hawai‘i
Volcanoes National Park
is Hawai‘i’s number one
attraction.
‘Akaka Falls State Park
Once back on Hwy 19, continue toward Hilo for 48 km to the
small town of Honomū (between mile marker 13 & 14), where
you’ll see the turn off on the right for ‘Akaka Falls State Park.
Take the waterfall loop hike (one hour) to see 60-meter Kahuna
Falls, then the towering ‘Akaka Falls plunging 135 meters from
the cliffs. A small entrance fee applies. hawaiistateparks.org
Hilo
Travel back to the main highway (6.5 km) and continue south to
the quaint town of Hilo. Stroll down Kamehameha Avenue and
discover a variety of local shops, art galleries and restaurants.

LOCAL TRANSPORT
HIRE CARS
• Travellers from Australia and New
Zealand do not require an international
driver’s licence as major car hire
companies accept licences from both
countries. In some cases drivers will
need to be more than 25 years of age and
in possession of a major credit card.
• It’s best to pre-arrange car hire prior to
leaving Australia to avoid disappointment.
• Rental cars offer real value as they
provide the freedom and flexibility to
experience what each island has to offer.
• Some car hire companies offer free
shuttles for customers picking up vehicles.
• Remember to drive on the right-hand side
of the road.
• You’ll find that most major roads are well
maintained.
• Please ‘drive with Aloha’ (slowly and
without the horn as it’s considered rude)
and observe speed limits. Avoid tailgating
and the local rule for single-lane bridges
is to yield to on-coming traffic. However,
if you’re the on-coming traffic and there is
a line waiting on the other side, stop and
let your neighbours cross.
• On O‘ahu use ‘TheBus’ (thebus.org) and
Waikiki Trolley (waikikitrolley.com) —
they’re easy, fun and affordable ways to
see Waikīkī and Honolulu.
• With little to no public transport on
neighbouring islands, a hire car (or
combination of hire car and tours) is
recommended.
• A ferry operates daily to/from Lāhainā
(Maui) to Moloka‘i (90 minute trip) and
Lāna‘i (60 minute trip).
• Taxis are available at airports and key
tourist spots. Credit cards are not
commonly accepted and long taxi rides
are costly. Taxis charge approximately
US$45 for the 30-minute journey from
Honolulu International Airport to Waikīkī.
• In key tourist spots, shuttles operate
between airports and hotels/resorts, and
between resorts and nearby shopping
precincts. Some are free of charge and
others incur a small fee (check with your
hotel/resort for details).
• Helicopter tours are a great way to see
the particularly scenic spots such as
Waimea Canyon (Kaua‘i) and
inaccessible areas such as the Nāpali
Coast (Kaua‘i).
ETIQUETTE TIPS
Respect property marked with kapu (‘off
limits’). Remember to mālama kai (respect
plants and animals). Make sure to mālama
‘aīna (respect the land) by staying on trails and
not disturbing plants. Properly dispose of opala
(rubbish). Observe smoke-free laws which
prohibit smoking in enclosed public areas.
• Passenger submarines are a novel,
comfortable and safe way to explore the
wonders of Hawai‘i’s tropical waters.
• Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles are
available for hire.
US standards on tipping apply:
Bar – US$0.50-$1 per drink
Concierge – US$1 for calling a taxi
Free shuttle – US$1 per short trip per person
Housekeeping – US$1 per bed per night
(leave it on the bedside table each morning)
Kids’ clubs – US$15 a day
Luggage porters – US$1 per bag
Room service – 10-15% of total bill
Taxi – 15% of fare
Tour guides – US$5-$10 per half day per
person/couple
Restaurants – 15-20%
Note that a service charge may be
automatically added to a bill, especially for
party sizes of six or more. Check your bill,
before tipping, to see if a service charge
has already been included.
Cruising –
A small gratuity is generally built into the
cost of your cruise (this is split between
various service departments onboard such
as housekeeping and food/beverage). At
your discretion, you may still like to leave a
tip for extra special service received from
housekeepers, waiters, bar staff, kids’ club
attendants and others.

INTERNET & WIRELESS
SERVICES
Many hotels in Hawai‘i provide internet or
Wi-Fi connectivity for their guests. Check with
your hotel regarding charges, if any. In addition
you’ll often find free Wi-Fi available in cafes
and restaurants. If you wish to use your laptop,
check that it can be used at a voltage of 110V.
STAYING IN TOUCH
BY PHONE
Check with your mobile phone provider
regarding international roaming charges as
they can be expensive. Many travellers opt to
disable international roaming and data downloading when they are overseas (consult your
mobile phone provider for instructions). One
way to keep your mobile bill under control while
away is to buy a pre-paid set-value SIM card
prior to departure or on arrival. In both cases
you simply get a new number and SIM card
to place in your existing handset while you’re
away from home. You can also use phone
cards and credit cards to make international
calls (convenience stores across Hawai‘i sell
phone cards).
CAMPING
Many sites are available. Permits and fees
are required. Visit https://camping.ehawaii.
gov/camping/welcome.html.

activities to help with a variety of projects:

CLOTHING
Casual daywear and semi-casual clothes
with a light jacket for evenings.
LEGAL DRINKING AGE
21 years of age. Please note that ID is
required to enter bars or buy alcoholic drinks.
ELECTRICAL VOLTAGE
Electricity is 115/120 volts at 60 cycles
(60 Hz) per second. Purchase a voltage
converter if your device does not accept this
voltage. The USA uses the ‘RJ11’ jack.
Coffee – US$3; Beer – US$5; Club Sandwich
– US$8; Glass of Wine – US$7; Soft Drink –
US$3. When purchasing an item you will be
charged a General Excise Tax (added on at
the time of purchase) of 4.166–4.712%.

WATER SAFETY
SUN SAFETY
Hawai‘i’s ocean is beautiful, but it can also
be dangerous. Strong, hidden currents can
overpower even experienced swimmers and
standing on rocky outcrops can be dangerous
due to sudden, powerful rogue waves.
Conditions in the water constantly change.
Apply sunscreen often (year-round).
Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
Remember:
• waves come in sets and conditions can
be calm for up to 20 minutes between
dangerous sets of waves
• swim only where lifeguards are on duty
• do not fight a rip current (keep calm, float,
wave for help and go with the current to
conserve energy)
• use the buddy system – never swim alone
and know your limits
• when in doubt, don’t go out
• nude bathing and nude sun-bathing are
prohibited across Hawai‘i.
GENERAL SAFETY TIPS
Be as security-conscious as you would be
at home. Don’t leave valuables unattended
or in plain sight in a hire car, on the beach,
or in restaurants or lobbies (lock them in the
hotel/room safe). Take only essential items
to the beach and put keys/valuables in a
waterproof bag and keep them with you.
Carry little cash and leave extra cash/credit
cards in the hotel safe. Make use of
travellers’ cheques, ATM facilities and/or
credit cards.

Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai‘i (VASH)
was established to assist visitors who have
been victims of a crime or other adversities.
Hawai‘i is among the safest tourist destinations
in the world but unfortunately crime against
visitors can never be completely prevented.
HIKING SAFETY
Hawai‘i is the perfect destination for hiking but
some trails are for experienced hikers only.
Make sure you do your research (degree of
difficulty and length), let people know where
you’re going, carry a mobile phone and water,
and always hike with a partner. Visit http://

PROTECING HAWAI‘I’S
NATURE RESERVES
1. Brush/clean your boots before entering
nature preserves to remove seeds and
eggs of invasive pests.
2. Never stray off a trail. Staying on paths
helps to protect native plants. It’s also safer
because many trails have hidden cliffs.
3. Take your own water. Water from streams
may look clear but may contain bacteria.
