My dear Parishioners and Friends,
Fundamentally, the Holy Father’s saying that if
religion remains a purely personal thing, and
doesn’t influence society, it remains incomplete. If believers are forced into this, this is persecution of them, and hatred and prejudice grow within the
oppressors. Peace can’t really exist in such a climate.
One more wish of ―Merry
Christmas‖ to you! The Savior’s birth
two millennia ago may have gone largely unnoticed at the time, but we in our
present day know of its significance. We
are a joyful people, for God loves us so much that He
sent His only Son to rescue us from sin and death and
hopelessness. I hope your holiday was replete with happiness, and the kind of blessings only faith, family and
friends can bestow.
What does this mean for us? Well, it suggests to
me that my New Year’s resolutions need to include a
recommitment to tolerance of those who peacefully
think differently from me, especially in religious matters. I’m also going to do some serious praying about
my willingness to suffer persecution for the sake of the
Gospel. What about you?
Still, a proper celebration of Christmas is exhausting. Has the holiday tired you out, like it has me?
I’m left with no energy for deep theological thinking or
writing! So the easiest way for me to proceed in this last
Bulletin of the year is to make a few announcements.
Note that this issue of the Bulletin covers two
weeks, until the end of the Christmas season. The January calendar is enclosed on page 6: you may wish to tear
it out and keep it on the front of your refrigerator, right
next to the little holiday note you wrote to yourself
saying ―Keep Out!‖
The first one is surely the most timely. Please
note that January 1 each year is the Solemnity of
Mary the Mother of God. Ordinarily this is a holy
day of obligation, but the US bishops in 1991 decided
that the requirement of attending Mass is dispensed
when it falls on a Saturday or Monday, like this year.
Speaking of calendars, did you get your copy of
our annual Parish wall calendar? It features some
excellent art, listing feast days and memorials as well as
other spiritual suggestions to help us all be a little more
fervent in prayer and generous in charity.
Still, you may wish to observe this feast. I highly
recommend it, of course! And here at the Cathedral we
have a wonderful custom of celebrating Mary’s maternity at a 4 pm Vigil Mass on New Year’s Eve,
―ringing in the New Year‖ right afterwards with gumbo
and champagne served for everyone next door in the
Parish Hall. Please, come and worship with Bishop
Muench and me, and then enjoy the fellowship.
With the end of the calendar year, a number of
parishioners have been especially generous in their
gifts to the Parish. It’s a demonstration to God of
gratitude for His many blessings. There is no substitute for making a sacrificial ―return to the Lord
for all the good He has done‖: it is truly the most
sure measure of faith and devotion. I am edified and
immensely grateful that so many of our wonderful
parishioners and friends know and act on this truth!
While on the subject of New Year’s, I note that
January 1 is also observed annually as World Day of
Peace by the Catholic Church. This year’s theme is
―Religious Freedom, the Path to Peace.‖ In choosing
this focus, Pope Benedict XVI was motivated in part by
the October 31 massacre of some 58 Catholics while
they were attending Mass in Baghdad, Iraq. Since then,
more attacks have occurred on Christians there.
That being said, let me wish you and yours the
very best of the New Year 2011. May it be a time of
discovery for you, as you marvel at the goodness of God
and the richness of our precious Catholic faith. And
may it be a time of grace and progress for all of us here
at the Cathedral, as we put that faith into practice!
In announcing this year’s theme the Pope said
something I thought was very profound. He wrote,
―Religious freedom, like every freedom, proceeds from
the personal sphere and is achieved in relationship
with others. Freedom without relationship is not full
freedom. Religious freedom is not limited to the individual dimension alone, but is attained within one’s
community and in society … In this communitarian
dimension, each person remains unique and unrepeatable, while at the same time finding completion and
full realization.‖

On December 31 we celebrate a 4:00 pm New Year’s
Vigil Mass, with gumbo and champagne served in the
Parish Hall afterwards! We hope you will be able to join us
for this time-honored Cathedral tradition!
RENOWNED ORGANIST DIANE BISH
WILL PERFORM HERE ON JANUARY 30
Diane Bish, the star of the
internationally acclaimed television
program ―The Joy of Music,‖ is returning to the Cathedral! She will
give a concert on ―Providence,‖ our
42-rank pipe organ, at 4:00 pm
Sunday, January 30, 2011. It is
free and open to the public. Special
seating will be available in the choir
gallery.
The Parish Office will be closed on Friday, December 24; on Monday, December 27; and on Friday,
December 31.
After the concert, the artist
will be honored at a fundraising reception at Juban’s Restaurant, benefitting the St. Joseph Cathedral Concert Series.
Tickets will be available at $125.00 per person. For more
information on the concert, special gallery seating, and
fundraiser, telephone 225-767-5775 or 225-757-6310.
The Ladies of the Cathedral want your old Christmas
cards, so don’t throw them out! These cards are recycled
into new cards at St. Jude Ranch for Children, an organization which helps abused, abandoned and neglected young
people. Cards can be dropped off at the Parish Office during
the month of January.

One very important Latin word theologically is:
This word means ―Son‖ (and yes, the word for ―Daughter‖ is
!). There is an English word derived from it,
―filial,‖ which references a child’s relationship to parents,
although it’s not a very common word.

Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI invites us to
pray during January 2011 ―That the riches of creation be
preserved, valued and made available to all, as a precious
gift from God to the human family.‖
But it’s common in theology! Jesus Christ is the Second
Person of the Blessed Trinity, but His relationship to the
First Person is described in Scripture as that of ―Son‖ (see
Mt 3:17 and many, many other places). Why is that? Probably because the child-parent relationship is one WE can appreciate. It’s the first one we learn, after all! It connotes
common purpose, loyalty within family, and of course most
of all LOVE between the Son and the Father! So, more poetically,
not only means ―Son,‖ but ―loving and beloved Son‖: something Jesus always was and which we, His
adopted brothers and sisters, try to be.
―To be the Mother Church, the servant of the
Diocese of Baton Rouge, and a community celebrating
the loving presence of Christ with strength, compassion,
and caring for all God’s people.‖
