Make Our Community
Your Home
S
earch the internet for “Retirement Communities” and you will likely find
results listing in the dozens. It doesn’t take long to realize there is certainly no
shortage of senior living choices available these days. Health care – especially
for the senior population – seems to be an ever growing and expanding field. In the
midst of the many options in the New York / New Jersey area, nestled on the edge of
the small suburban town of North Haledon, NJ is the Holland Christian Home – a
Continuing Care Retirement Community that has been in existence for over 119
years! Compared to many of today’s sprawling, corporate health care facilities, the
Holland Home, with its 170 beds, may be smaller in size – but this only lends to the
warm, homelike atmosphere found among the residents and staff and in the rooms
and hallways of the “Home.”
From the smile of the volunteer greeting visitors in the lobby, or the laughter of the
residents playing a game in the multipurpose room, to the employee chatting with
a resident mailing a package in the office – it’s readily apparent the Home is not
just another health care facility. It’s a close-knit community of staff and residents,
of friends and neighbors, all dedicated to the well-being of the seniors aged 75 and
older who live here.
While the smaller, more intimate size of the Home certainly helps create an atmosphere of community, another influencing factor is definitely the longevity of
the many staff who work here. It is no coincidence that with approximately 140
employees, 26 have worked at the Home over 5 years, 26 have worked at the Home
over 10 years, and 20 have worked at the Home over 15 years! This last number
includes employees who have been working at the Home as long as 35, 38 and
even 39 years! Of course having such dedicated, long term staff at the Home brings
consistency and continuity of care to our residents. But just as importantly it means
our employees and residents get to know each other personally – as individuals. They
form friendships, share their lives with each other, and truly care about one another.
And isn’t that what community is all about?
In fact, community is so foundational at the Holland Christian Home that it is central
to our mission statement: “The Holland Christian Home is a retirement and support
service community of men and women, bound together as a family by a common
faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. With hearts to love and hands to help, our staff, volunteers and Board are dedicated to the well-being of our residents through the nurture
of devoted care; a warm, homelike atmosphere; loving and friendly companionship;
and a strong covenant relationship.” If you are a senior aged 75 or older and would like
to know more about the Holland Christian Home, please contact us today. Consider
making our community your home!

2014 Volunteer of the Year
T
his year’s Holland Christian Home Volunteer of the Year award was
presented to Toni Ravo. A long-time resident of North Haledon, many
people know Toni from the years she spent working at the North
Haledon Library and from her active involvement with the North Haledon
Republican Club. Toni was commended at the 2014 Volunteer Luncheon for
faithfully volunteering each week at the Holland Christian Home reception
desk where she greets visitors, answers phones, and helps with office tasks.
If you are interested in becoming involved in one of the many volunteer
opportunities available at the Holland Christian Home, please call the Activity
/Volunteer Office today at 973-427-4087, ext. 612.
Time Marches On!
Steve Eichhorn, President of the Board
J
ust as time marches on, things here
at the Holland Christian Home
have changed. After many years
of dedicated and faithful service, two
Board member terms have ended. At the Annual Association
Meeting and at the May Board Meeting, the services of John
Belanus and Elroy Dyksen were recognized with a “Resolution
of Gratitude for their Dedication and Christian Commitment
and Service.” John and Elroy have served faithfully and
diligently for many years. John served as President and on
many committees over 10 years. Elroy has served on several
committees and was key in stabilizing the finances of the
Association over 18 years. He was also instrumental in
establishing the Foundation.
At the Annual Meeting of the Association in May, Debra
Steyling was elected to replace John. Martin Leegwater was
selected by the residents and approved by the Board to replace
Elroy. At the first Board meeting in May, after serving one
year, I find myself elected as the President. I am looking
forward to getting to know the residents and staff as they
get to know me. Nevertheless, John and Elroy will not be
completely absent from the future endeavors of the Home.
John has agreed to lead and serve on the committee working
on our building addition and Elroy will continue on the
Finance committee. The Board and I would like to thank John
and Elroy for the many things they have accomplished during
their years of tenure.
The Holland Christian Home
After over 40 years of dedicated and faithful service to our
Home, Mr. Gordon D. Meyer, our Board Legal Counsel,
has indicated his desire to retire from the Home. Please join
me in thanking him for many years of service in maintaining
the betterment of the Home. His counsel and advice at our
meetings will be missed. We wish Gordon God’s blessings as
he moves into the next phase of his life.
Our staff is to be congratulated for another year of a “No
Deficiencies” rating after the annual New Jersey State
Department of Health survey. It is due to the dedication and
hard work of the staff that our home was able to maintain this
recognition. We thank them for paying attention to the details
necessary to maintain this status.
We are looking forward to many exciting and beneficial
changes here at the Home. With the planned addition to our
Mountain View wing we will be upgrading and improving
our nursing care unit. We have also experienced a number of
changes in our staff through the retirement of several people,
who have been with us for many years and the replacement of
a couple of department heads.
As your president I am dedicating myself to continuing the
119 years of support and services to our family of residents
bound together by a common faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. I
ask for your prayer and support as we move forward in making
the Holland Christian Home a place of safety and well-being
for all the residents that God has placed in our care.

A Community Striving
for
F
Excellence
or the second year in a row, the Holland Christian
Home is pleased to announce it has received a
“deficiency-free” rating from the NJ Department
of Health and Senior Services. Following on the heels
of an intensive surprise inspection that lasted two days,
staff and residents were thrilled to learn the Home was
once again awarded the highest possible rating from the
NJDHSS. It should be noted that it is uncommon for a
facility to receive this rating even once – much less two
years consecutively. The entire staff of the Home is to
be commended for their dedication to excellence and
their commitment to quality care.
Congratulations to all!
It’s All About Community
Caryn Edelbach, Administrator
T
he Holland Christian Home is
a retirement and support service
community, comprised of men
and women bound together as a family by a common faith
in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Tucked away on 14 acres in North
Haledon, it is often referred to as “North Jersey’s best kept
secret.” As a Continuing Care Retirement Community, the
Holland Christian Home may be small in size, but offers all the
amenities today’s seniors have come to expect. The key word
when describing the Home is community…Our community;
your home.
My favorite definition for Christian community is found
in Hebrews 10:19-25. In this passage, Paul explains how
the actions of Christ allow us to draw near to God, which
in turn drives us towards loving each other and doing good
works as we naturally meet together because of Christ’s
actions. Verses 24-25 state, “And let us consider how we
may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not
giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of
doing, but encouraging one another....” Christ calls us to
live in community with one another, and nowhere is this
4
better modeled than at the Holland Christian Home. Our
residents are united by the common joy they have in Christ,
as they share in living out Christ’s mission.
As followers of Jesus Christ, His words and actions naturally
inspire us to rise up and follow Him. Learning from Jesus
evokes a desire to obey Him and emulate His works. Our staff,
volunteers and Board of Directors all seek to do just that as we
share in the Home’s mission: hearts to love and hands to help.
Our staff is instrumental in maintaining the high care
standards and exceptional customer service that help make the
Home the unique retirement community it is. We have just
marked our second year of a “deficiency free” rating from the
New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. We are
proud of the hard work and dedication our staff continues to
demonstrate year after year.
We strive to follow in the footsteps of our Lord, while providing
the best for our residents. We will continue the tradition of
devoted care in our warm, homelike atmosphere. Because at
the Holland Christian Home, it’s not just about quality health
care – it’s also about community.
Happenings - Fall/Winter 2014
Celebrating Milestones in
Our Community
A
s a community we shared in celebrating the retirement of 3 long term
and much loved employees. We appreciate the many years of dedicated
service Dot Bush, RoseMarie DeFalco and Nelly Rivero have given to
the Home. We wish them much health and happiness as they retire and begin
the next chapter in their lives.
D
orothy “Dot” Bush has been an employee of the Home for 22 years.
Starting as a part time RN, Dot moved to Charge Nurse on the 3-11
shift – a position she has held for the last 7 years. Residents and staff
joined together to congratulate Dot on her many years of service at the Holland
Christian Home.
N
elly Rivero has perhaps been employed at the Home longer than
anyone else. Starting first in the Housekeeping Department and
then transitioning into a job as a Certified Nurse Aide, Nelly has
been working at the Holland Christian Home for over 39 years! Throughout
her career Nelly has gotten to know and lovingly cared for hundreds of
residents. Employees and residents gathered at a picnic to celebrate Nelly
and wish her all the best in her retirement.
A
n ice cream party in the Main Sitting Room of the Home was held
in honor of retiring employee RoseMarie De Falco. Working as the
Holland Christian Home’s Medical Secretary for the past 14 years,
RoseMarie will be greatly missed by her fellow co-workers and by residents.

Making a Difference
in the Community
P
art of what makes the Holland Christian
Home such a special community is the
service-oriented attitude of both residents
and staff. Taking to heart the words found in 1
Peter 4:10, “Each of you should use whatever
gift you have received to serve others, as faithful
stewards of God’s grace in its various forms,”
many of our employees and residents spend
countless hours serving others by volunteering
at various local organizations. They are
committed to using their gifts and talents to
lend a helping hand and make a difference in the
community around them.
When speaking of volunteers, resident Jeannette
Rozema naturally comes to mind. Jeannette organizes the many Holland Christian Home residents
who knit dozens of blankets each year for the Home’s
chapter of “Warm Up America.” The blankets made
Rena Bruins and Jeannette Rozema volunteer at “ditto”
by these residents have been donated to such worthy
thrift shop, where they sort donations.
organizations as New Hope Ministries in Prospect Park, Eva’s
Kitchen in Paterson, and the local Red Cross to name just a few. Jeannette also volunteers at Eastern Christian School
Association’s North Haledon thrift shop, “ditto”. There Jeannette, along with fellow resident Rena Bruins, assists with sorting
through the many donations of clothing the shop receives.

Hummy Klopman
Born in Friesland, Holland, Hummy (Schaper) Klopman came to the
United States with her parents in 1927 at the age of three. They settled
in Midland Park, New Jersey where they became members of Faith
Reformed Church (formerly Old Dutch Reformed Church). Hummy
attended Midland Park public schools and worked as a bookkeeper
for her father’s business, Schaper Disposal. She met her late husband,
Barney Klopman, in town. The happy young couple married on October 15, 1946, built their home in Midland Park and had one daughter
who they named Barbara. Hummy joined the Holland Christian Home
in July and has two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Happenings - Fall/Winter 2014
Lenore Malefyt, a resident of the Home since 2002,
volunteers weekly at the Christian Health Care
Center in Wyckoff. Having grown up a stone’s
throw from the Center, and then working there
early in her nursing career, it was a natural place to
turn when Lenore was looking for somewhere to
volunteer. Working with the Dietary Department
as a “Menu Checker” Lenore has approximately
eight different Health Care Center residents she
visits weekly and assists them in making choices
from their printed menus. Lenore feels that just
as important as helping her residents choose their
meals is the time she spends visiting with each one,
getting to know them – and in fact she finds that is
the most rewarding part of her volunteer work. She
loves interacting with the people!
Recently hired, the Holland Christian Home’s
new Director of Maintenance, Steve Bruining,
volunteers with his church to help out a group
of men from the Good Shepherd Mission in
Paterson. Once a week during the months of
November through March, a number of local
churches rotate turns taking in 10 men from the
mission, feeding them dinner and breakfast, and
giving them a warm place to sleep. Steve has been
volunteering with this program for over 20 years!
Seeing God provide for the needs of these men –
whether it’s a need for direction in life, a job, or

T
he Holland Christian Home is pleased
to announce employee John Bosch as
full-time Chaplain. Originally from
New Zealand, John moved to the States in
1989 and attended Reformed Bible College and Puritan
Reformed Seminary, in Michigan. With experience
volunteering in nursing home ministries, John began
working as a part-time Spiritual Advisor at the Holland
Christian Home approximately two years ago. When a fulltime position opened up, John was a natural fit and made
the transition smoothly.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the busy last few months of
full-time ministry at the Home,” said John. “I appreciate the
atmosphere of faith and love that permeates the Home. I
appreciate the patience of the residents as I seek to minister
to their needs and I solicit the prayers of the faithful as I
endeavor to minister the Word amongst all. My prayer is
that of the apostle Paul, ‘Praying always with all prayer and
supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all
perseverance and supplication for all saint; And for me,
that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my
mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel.’ ”
Ephesians 6:18, 19
John is married to Ruth Ann, who teaches at the
Netherlands Reformed Christian School. They have
two children – Rebecca, a student at Montclair State
University, and Chris John, a student at NJIT.
Janet Ver Voorn
Janet Ver Voorn arrived at the Holland Christian Home in March,
2014. One of three children, she was born on 3rd Avenue in Hawthorne and lived on that same street her entire life! After graduating
school, Janet commuted to New York City where she worked as a
typist for an insurance company. She married her high school
sweetheart, Robert Ver Voorn, at the Rea Avenue Reformed Church.
They settled down in Hawthorne and raised three children. While
her children were small, Janet was a homemaker and Robert worked
as a truck driver. She later returned to work at the Hawthorne
Department of Health. They owned a motor home and enjoyed
traveling together. Janet is a member of Hawthorne Gospel Church.
Her favorite pasttime is sewing. She has six grandchildren.

Welcome Lynn!
T
his spring the Holland Christian Home welcomed Lynn Ardese as the new
Director of Activities. Lynn comes to our facility with over eight years of
experience in the health care industry. She began her career working for
medical device and diagnostic imaging companies, Becton Dickinson and Quest
Diagnostics, and then spent time working in a sub-acute rehab/long term care facility.
Lynn graduated magna cum laude from Montclair State University and is a Certified
Activity Director, Fitness Instructor and is also First Aid and CPR certified. Prior
to joining the Home, Lynn worked for the Salvation Army and YWCA of Bergen
County. “I am truly blessed to be a part of the Holland Christian Home. It is a very
special place.”
Welcome Steve!
W
e are pleased to introduce Steve Bruining as the new
Director of Maintenance for the Holland Christian Home.
Steve joined our team in March with a background as a plant
manager for a local print company. He and his wife, Nancy, reside in
Midland Park with their two sons and daughter-in-law.
Steve is currently a member and elder at Cedar Hill CRC. He enjoys
volunteering at Good Shepherd Mission in Paterson and is a board
member of North East Community Transformation, where he also
serves as Treasurer. We are delighted to welcome Steve to the Holland
Christian Home family and know he will be a great asset to our team.
Making a Difference… continued from page 7
to learn about Christ – is what Steve finds so rewarding
about the time he donates here.
Steve Schott, Food Service Director at the Home, is a
long-time volunteer fireman with the North Haledon
Fire Department. Following in the family tradition of his
father, becoming a volunteer fireman came naturally to
Steve. But his history of volunteering doesn’t end there.
An avid sports fan himself, for years Steve was a volunteer in the North Haledon rec program, working with
community kids as a football, baseball, basketball and soccer coach, using his gifts and interests to serve the greater
community.
Of course this is just a small sampling of Holland
8
Christian Home residents and staff who are active in
helping out the community around them. There’s not
enough space here to list them all!
You might wonder what motivates so many people to
spend their time volunteering. After all, isn’t retirement
the time of life where you can finally rest and relax, sit
back and put your feet up? Aren’t employees busy with
full time jobs and caring for their families? Interestingly
enough, a common thread seems to weave through their
conversations when explaining why they choose to volunteer– a desire to “give back” to the community, to “make a
difference” and to “connect with people.” And above all is
the desire to show the love of Christ to those around them,
to be the hands and feet of Jesus in their local community.

H
olland Christian Home staff and residents alike were
excited at the arrival of the Home’s new 18 passenger
bus. With wider and easier stair access, better climate
control, and more comfortable seating, this new vehicle is not only
more convenient, but is also safer than the 20 year old bus it has
replaced. Residents are happy to be chauffeured to shopping trips
and group excursions in this new bus, which proudly bears the
Holland Christian Home name. The entire cost of the bus was
covered by several generous gifts, for which the Home is most
grateful.

Community Connections
Connecting with the local community is an important part
of resident life at the Holland Christian Home. Whether it’s
chatting with Eastern Christian High School students who
stopped by to help plant flowers, or visiting with a four-legged
friend in our Pet Therapy program, residents are always glad to
welcome friends and visitors to the Home!

The Holland Christian Home Foundation is most
frequently known for receiving donations in memory
of a loved one or in celebration of a milestone event.
The Foundation also is visible in the community
by hosting events such as the Annual Anniversary
Dinner at the Tides in North Haledon, or the Spring
Ladies’ Breakfast at the Brownstone in Paterson.
Another major function of the Foundation is to raise
money for the Home through capital campaigns, such
as our new “Spirit of Progress” Building Project focused
on transforming Mountain View Nursing Unit into
single rooms.
However, many people are not aware of another
significant activity of the Foundation: Providing
scholarships to nursing students. The Scholarship Fund
was first established in memory of Peter Vogel who
served twenty-five years as a member of the Board of
Directors, and thirteen years as the chief administrator
of the Holland Christian Home. The Scholarship Fund
grew substantially in 2002 from a generous gift from
former HCH resident John Van Grouw in loving
memory of his wife Margaret (Peggy). The purpose of
14
s a little girl, I experienced
in a personal way the
impact a nurse can have on
your life. When I was 9 years old I
was diagnosed with Type I Juvenile
Diabetes. I entered the hospital that
morning very sick and fearing that
my life would never be the same.
During that four day hospital stay
I encountered many caring people.
However the nurse who made the
biggest impression on me was a
Certified Diabetic Trainer who
herself was also a diabetic. With
my diabetes, I would also like
to become a nurse and help other
children who become diagnosed
with diabetes. I have just completed
my third semester of college at
Fairleigh Dickinson University where
I am pursuing my nursing degree. I have
greatly appreciated your support this last
semester by the means of the Holland Christian
Home Scholarship. This scholarship was used to
pay a portion of my tuition.”
~ Heidi Van Wingerden.
the Fund is “to provide financial assistance to students
who are pursuing their education and their careers in
the field of nursing.” Interested students must submit
proof of enrollment in registered nursing programs
or practical nursing programs in accredited colleges
or hospitals. Requests for scholarship requirements
and applications should be addressed to the Holland
Christian Home Foundation by February 1st each year.
The Scholarship Fund is currently providing tuition
assistance for twelve nursing students. Their personal
stories and passion for pursuing a career in nursing are
all unique, but many are related to their own medical
experiences, or those of a family member.
Encouraging local students along the pathway to a
career in nursing is one way the Holland Christian
Home Foundation can assist those with a desire to
serve, both for our greater community, and here at the
Home. If you would like to help us to support future
nurses by contributing to the Scholarship Fund, please
contact the Foundation at 973-427-4087, ext. 649, or
e-mail at [email protected].
Happenings - Fall/Winter 2014
Anniversary Dinner
W
ith thankful hearts, the Holland Christian Home Foundation hosted their annual dinner at the Tides Estate in
North Haledon to celebrate the 119th Anniversary of the Home. It was the largest crowd ever in attendance, filling
the newly renovated and expanded ballroom at the Tides. Attendees were blessed with fine food and fellowship,
and a performance from Vocalise, a young women’s ensemble under the direction of Rob Davis. All proceeds from the dinner
will be applied to “The Spirit of Progress” campaign, the Home’s Mountain View Nursing Unit renovation/construction project. The Foundation is grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support from the community and to God for his enduring
faithfulness to our Home.

Ensemble, who created a lovely
ambiance during the appetizer hour.

Any asset you own may become a charitable gift!
Most gifts to Christian charities are in the form of cash.
This may not always be the most tax-efficient way to give.
It may surprise you to know that many assets may be more
tax-efficient to give than cash.
Consider gifts of:
•
Stock / Other Securities
•
Real Estate • Business Interests
•
Life Insurance •
Tangible Personal Property
Appreciated assets make great gifts!
The federal tax law makes gifts of appreciated assets
(assets that have grown in value) more advantageous than
giving cash.
The Holland Christian Home
It will actually cost you less to give a gift of appreciated
assets to your favorite Christian charity. Since certain
restrictions and requirements surround the giving of each
type of asset, Barnabas Foundation assists its Christian
member organizations like the Holland Christian Home
in completing these gifts. We will help you gift the asset
that works best for your situation.
To plan your gifts for maximum impact, contact the
Holland Christian Home Foundation at 973-427-4087 of
[email protected]. We are also very pleased to
share with you the expertise of our Barnabas Foundation
representative, Mr. Steve Baker, JD, as he offers free
information to anyone needing consultation or estate
planning. Steve’s focus has been Taxation and Benefits
Law and Estate Planning. The Foundation Office would
welcome the opportunity to connect you to him.

wish list
Every gift which comes to the Holland Christian Home helps us to serve residents in some
way. Occasionally, a donor might prefer to give a gift toward a specific purchase. We have
compiled a “Wish List” of items that would help to improve the lives of our residents and
