Blessed Virgin Mary
This week the Church takes a break from what we can call its “summer
break” to celebrate the Blessed Mother on August 15th, celebrating the Assumption of
Mary. The Assumption of Mary always reminds me of my time in Italy since this is one
of the biggest celebrations in Italy in honor of the Blessed Mother. I recall everything
being closed and celebrations being held throughout the cities, small towns, villages
and family homes. In a way, this celebration is the mid point of summer. As I thought
about this celebration, I could take some time to talk about what this celebration is all
about, since my thesis was partly on this dogma. I have to confess that I used some of
it for this week’s column…
The Feast of the Assumption is a very old feast of the Church celebrated
universally by the sixth century. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where
it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep."
The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven
dates from the fourth century in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy
Mother of God." The document is written in the voice of the Apostle John, to whom
Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother and recounts the death,
laying in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition variously places
Mary's death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus where John was living.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her
earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. On November 1, 1950, Pope
Pius XII, exercising papal infallibility, declared in "Munificentissimus Deus" that it is a
dogma of the Church "that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary,
having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into
heavenly glory." As a dogma the Assumption is a required belief of all Catholics;
anyone who publicly dissents from the dogma, Pope Pius declared, "has fallen away
completely from the divine and Catholic Faith."
While the Eastern Orthodox believe in the Dormition, they object to the
papal definition of the dogma seeing it as unnecessary since belief in Mary's bodily
assumption, tradition holds, goes back to apostolic times. Pope Pius XII, in the text
explaining his definition of the dogma of the Assumption, refers repeatedly to the
Blessed Virgin's death before her Assumption, and the consistent tradition in both the
East and the West holds that Mary did die before she was assumed into Heaven.
However, since the definition of the Assumption is silent on this question, Catholics
can legitimately believe that Mary did not die before the Assumption.

all possible. This will be a day of celebrating the Mass, prayer, good food, exciting

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Long ago, a signet ring was an essential part of the
wardrobe of influential people. A letter or document would
be sealed with hot wax, and a signet ring pressed into the
wax would affirm the origin of the document. In the case of
the pope, at least from the thirteenth century, the ring was
used to seal public documents with hot lead, saving the red
wax for private letters. The public documents were called
bullae after the Latin name for the lead stamp, and we still
call them "papal bulls."
It is not surprising, therefore, that a signet ring has long
been bestowed as part of the inauguration of a pope. The
ring is called the Pescatorio, or "Ring of the Fisherman." It
reminds the wearer of his link with Peter, and his
responsibility to continue the apostolic ministry of "fishing
for human beings." Until 1842, it actually functioned as a
signet ring. Now, each pope receives a new gold ring at the
beginning of his ministry. It goes on the fourth finger of his
right hand and bears some fisherman design, usually St.
Peter casting nets from a boat, as well as the pope's name in
Latin. A custom that endures for the pope, but not so much
for bishops, is for people being introduced to him to kiss the
Pescatorio as a sign of respect for his teaching authority.
Another enduring custom is for the ring to be smashed and
defaced at the pope's death, originally a way of preventing
counterfeit deathbed documents.

YOUNG ADULTS Join us for our monthly activities for ages 18-39 years of age. Every first Thursday 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm for
Eucharistic Adoration, Faith Topic, Bible Study, and Off-Campus fellowship-social (off-campus TBD). Our Adoration (in the
church) is an hour long with music and quiet time. Our faith topics typically relate to the current liturgical season and/or holiday.
Bible studies cover the coming Sunday's readings. The last Thursday of the month, as a group, we go off campus, be it bowling or
laser tagging, we continue enjoying each other’s camaraderie. When there is a fifth Thursday in a month, we have a service-oriented
activity (i.e. write notes or cards to families of patients in the hospital with words of encouragement and hope), but there are more

Bendita Virgen María
Esta semana la iglesia se toma un descanso de lo que llamamos “Vacaciones de Verano” para
celebrar a La Madre Santísima en Agosto 15, con la celebración de la Asunción de María. La
Asunción de María siempre me recuerda el tiempo que pasé en Italia ya que esta es una de las más
grandes celebraciones en Italia en honor de la Madre Bendita. Yo recuerdo que todo estaba cerrado y
que había celebraciones por todas las ciudades, pueblos pequeños, aldeas y en los hogares familiares. De cierta
manera esta celebración es el punto medio del verano. Así como pienso en esta celebración, me gustaría
compartirles y hablar acerca de lo que esta celebración es, ya que mi tesis fue parcialmente parte de este dogma
yo les confieso que esta semana use algo de esta tesis para esta columna…
La Fiesta de la Asunción es una fiesta muy antigua de la Iglesia, celebrada universalmente alrededor del siglo VI.
La fiesta fue originalmente celebrada en el Este, donde se le conoce como la Fiesta de la Dormición, una palabra
que significa “Caer Dormida.”
La primera referencia impresa de esta creencia es que el cuerpo de María fue asunto al Cielo, esto data del siglo
IV, en un documento titulado “La Dormición de la Santa Madre de Dios.” El documento está escrito en la voz del
Apóstol Juan, al que Cristo en la Cruz ha confiado el cuidado de Su madre, y recuenta la muerte de ella, acostada
en la tumba, y la asunción de la Virgen María. La tradición de manera variada a veces coloca la muerte de María
en Jerusalén o en Éfeso, donde Juan estaba viviendo.
La Asunción de la Bendita Virgen María al cielo al final de su vida en la tierra es un dogma definido de la Iglesia
Católica. En Noviembre 1, 1950, el Papa Pio XII, ejercitando su infalibilidad papal, declaro en “Munificentissimus
Deus” este es un dogma de la Iglesia “que la Inmaculada Madre de Dios, la siempre Virgen María, habiendo
completado el curso de su vida en la tierra, fue asunta al cielo en cuerpo y alma dentro de la gloria celestial.”
Como un dogma, la Asunción es una creencia requerida de todos los católicos; cualquiera quien públicamente
disienta del dogma, el Papa Pio declaro, “Ha caído lejos completamente de la divinidad y de la Fe Católica.”
Mientras que los Ortodoxos del Este creen en la Dormición, ellos objetan a la definición papal del dogma,
viéndolo así innecesario, ya que la creencia en la asunción del cuerpo de María, se sostiene en una tradición, que
data de los tiempos apostólicos. El Papa Pio XII, en el texto explicando su definición del dogma de la Asunción,
refiere repetidamente a la muerte de la Bendita Virgen antes de la Asunción, y la tradición consistente en ambos la
del Este y la del Oeste sostiene que María murió antes de ser asunta al cielo. Mientras tanto, ya que la definición
de la Asunción se mantiene en silencio a esta pregunta, los católicos pueden legítimamente creer que María no
murió antes de la Asunción.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE- El otro día leí un artículo escrito por un pastor bautista sobre la necesidad de tener un altar en
casa para educar a nuestros hijos en la fe y la oración. Lo leí con interés ya que el uso del altarcito tiene una larga historia en la
Iglesia católica. En casa de mis abuelos paternos, en México, había un bello altarcito en forma de pirámide que contenía flores,
velas y figuras de Jesús, María y algunos santos. Además de esto estaban también algunos instrumentos de oración como el
rosario, la Biblia y algún otro libro de oración. También en casa de mi abuela materna, en Texas, había un rinconcito sagrado.
Muchos latinos tenemos altarcitos familiares. Algunos son verdaderos altares como el de mi abuela, Mamá Lilia. Otros son
rincones especiales como el de Mamá María, con alguna imagen y libro de oración y fotografías de nuestros parientes. A fin de
cuentas no importa ni su tamaño ni su forma. Importa su existencia y sobre todo su uso para recordarnos de la presencia e

EL COSTO DE SER DISCÍPULO - El Salmo responsorial de hoy, Salmo 40 (39), nos es muy familiar por el refrán "Señor, date
prisa en socorrerme". La historia de Jeremías hoy y el refrán "¡Señor, date prisa en socorrerme!" nos recuerda que siempre hay
dos caminos para seguir el llamado de Dios. El autor de la Carta a los Hebreos también lo sabía. Él recordaba a sus lectores
que aunque nos agobien desgracias y pecados, podemos todavía perseverar si mantenemos nuestros ojos fijos en Jesús,
quien también conoció la vergüenza y el dolor de la cruz, pero vio más allá del sufrimiento, el gozo de sentarse a la derecha
del trono de Dios. Jesús mismo dio a sus discípulos una "idea" de un bautismo que no sería tan maravilloso como el del
Jordán que inauguró su ministerio, sino de fuego y angustia. Las palabras de la Sagrada Escritura hoy pueden no ser
terriblemente apaciguadoras, pero en su honestidad y fortaleza podemos reconocer las dificultades que el discípulo enfrenta

UN PROFETA DE LOT
Jeremías amaba la ciudad de Jerusalén y a sus habitantes. Él les habló la
Palabra de Dios, diciéndoles que podían cambiar sus caminos equivocados y
regresar al Señor con oración y súplica para librarlos de sus enemigos. La
ciudad de Jerusalén estaba sitiada, amenazada por la hambruna y en caminos
torcidos. El rey y el pueblo creyeron lo que falsos profetas les dijeron, que
porque vivían en la ciudad santa y guardaban el Arca de la Alianza, nadie
podría conquistarlos y que Dios los salvaría. Jeremías les dijo todo lo opuesto. Él
les dijo que si no cambiaban su infidelidad, ellos serían conquistados y
destruidos y el pueblo sería tomado como esclavo. Ellos no quisieron escuchar
esto y, conspiraron contra Jeremías. Pero Dios lo salvo de sus manos y, aunque
ellos fueron conquistados y hechos esclavos en Babilonia, Jeremías fue con ellos
a ese destino, él profeta fiel.
EL GRAN PROFETA
Jesús le dice a sus discípulos lo que ellos no querían escuchar. Él les
dijo que él no había venido a traer paz, sino división. Él profetizó que las
personas se dividirían por causa de sus palabras, las familias se separarían por
desacuerdos. Estamos viendo lo mismo en nuestro país y en nuestra Iglesia en
este tiempo. Pablo nos enseña que, rodeado por una nube de testigos, nuestros
antepasados, debemos mantener nuestros ojos fijos en Jesús. Él sufrió la cruz por
el bien de los creyentes, soportando la vergüenza y el dolor por el bien del
reino de Dios. Así que debemos ser valientes, confiar en Jesús por estar
diciéndonos lo que podría dejarnos perplejos de escuchar, y caminar con fe
