Up the Apple Hill to Golf
Monthly Message from 2005 SCA President Corby Schmautz
Wow, the year is going by
fast!
Here we are in June already. As I am sure you all
know, we will not be meeting
this month, the annual golf
tournament will be this month
at Apple Mountain on June
10th. I want to thank everyone in advance for your enthusiastic support. We were
sold out over a month in ad2005 SCA President
Corby Schmautz
vance of the tournament!
Hopefully, it will not rain.
Next month, the entertainment committee is planning
an outstanding group social event. We will be providing
additional details shortly.
Looking forward, the board has some decisions to
make regarding completing the merger of the property
claims forum and SCA. This will involve preparing new
bylaws and preparing for new elections. If you are interested in being a part of the board please send me an
email at [email protected].
We want the Sacramento Claims Association to be
the best association any where.
Thank you again and we will see you up in Camino on
June 10th.

Claims Conference Moves to
Oakland this September
2005 CCNC returns to Bay Area for the first time in six
years: “Navigating the Course of Change”
Plans are coming together for the 2005 Claims Conference of Northern California (CCNC). The twelfth annual two day seminar and trade show event will be held
Sept 13-14, 2005 at the Oakland Marriott downtown.
The conference has continued to work to build on
successes of past events, while improving on execution
of sound plans and ideas.
2005 President, Stu Ryland, of the Malmgren Group/
Probity, is working closely with Vice President Michael
Sowerwine, with Hagen, Streiff, Newton & Oshiro, to raise
the level of professionalism yet another notch.
Education Committee Co-Chairs Steve Tilghman and
Robert Fox, together with their committee, have put together a well-rounded and diverse slate of workshops
and seminar sessions
that have already received Continuing Education credit approval
for a variety of professional levels.
A main feature will
be a two-part mock trial,
Two-Days of
with workshops such as:
Seminars,
Slip, Trip and Falls; CatasTraining
trophe Claims; ProfesTradeshow
sional Ethics; Subrogation; Roofing Claims; as
well as a session featuring a diverse panel on
SIU and Fraudulent
Claims, and another
workshop dealing with Cyber Risks and the theft of Intellectual Property.
Edward Hochuli Esq., of Jones, Skelton, & Hochuli, is
the scheduled key note speaker. Mr. Hochuli is a noted
defense counsel lawyer and an NFL official. He will discuss, "The tremendous difference between handling the
big claims and the small ones”.
A vast amount of work is under way for this all volunteer group, comprised of representatives of some ten
Northern California local claims associations. The 2005
CCNC will feature a slightly larger trade show than those
in Sacramento in recent years. Plans are also in the works
for an all new big event for that Tuesday evening.
Registration by credit card or check is in place, along
with further details of the event, at:
www.ClaimsConference.org.

SIU Panel Discussion Draws the Masses
Industry experts shine in four man tag team
By Bryan Harrison
The Sacramento Claims Association continued to lead
by example at the May 12, 2005 luncheon meeting, drawing yet another crowd of some 100 industry professionals,
including a respectable percentage of adjusters. The draw,
in part, may be attributed to the quality of the presentation. The SIU Panel discussion, led by Craig Pusser of CSAA,
featured four (4) top-notch fraud-fighters - all experts on
various levels within the field of special investigations.
Mr. Pusser began the conversation with a unifying
theme. “Insurance companies are in competition for busi-
ness,” he said. “But when it
comes to fighting fraud, we’re
all working together.”
“California,” he continued,
“is a good place to be (in the
effort to fight insurance fraud).
There are good laws on the
books, adjusters on the front
lines to get word to those who
can act on it, and funding for
Craig Pusser, of CSAA SIU.
prosecution,” he stated.
Each speaker took about a
10-15 time slot, with just a few minutes left in the brief session
for questions.
Tom Fraysse, an attorney with Knox, Ricksen, followed
Pusser. “There are some 131,000 lawyers in California, he
said. “99% of them give the rest a bad name,” he quipped.
John Standish, a Bureau Chief with the CDI, stressed the
need for accurate and complete fraud reporting. “Provide
facts, not innuendo,” he said.
“It’s easier to prosecute homicide than insurance fraud,”
he stated, despite the fact that 38 counties have grant
money to combat the problem.

“Stay vigilant and committed

George Wood, a Deputy District Attorney from Alameda

off with a look at the role of the D.A.
We must “review the appropriateness of cases to pursue, which
takes time,” he said. “They must be

“Never file a case on a bluff,”

Claims Profile: Magda Michel - Enterprising her Way in the Industry
By Joan Barrett, Market Share
Magda
Michel's
mother bought a car from
Maria Martinez of Enterprise Rent A Car 10 1⁄2
years ago and wondered
aloud why Maria was so
happy. Maria's response
was that she loved her job
and loved working for Enterprise and ended up
selling not just the car, but
the company, as well, to
Magda's mother. She
then wasted no time telling her daughter to apply to the company that Maria
loved so much.
Now Maria is Maria Martinez-Jones and a new
mother, but she still loves Enterprise. Magda is still happy
that she allowed Enterprise to interrupt her plans to become a teacher, and is very happy as the Marketing
Manager for the Modesto Region. She covers the territory from Merced to Elk Grove to Placerville.
With a personality well-suited to her role with Enterprise, Magda naturally makes friends wherever she’s
found. She has become known for her high energy level,
bright outlook, and thoroughly dependable and competent abilities. Her involvement and relatively fast rise
within the organizations in which she’s delved illustrates
the point.
Magda finds time to volunteer for a raft of insurance
related organizations, and is currently the Vice President
of both the Mid-Valley and Modesto Claims Associations,
positions she took with the stipulation that she not become president of either of them. Her purpose is to serve.
In addition, she volunteers on the board of the Claims
Conference of Northern California, working on the promotions committee as a voting representative of MidValley Claims. She is on the board of the Stanislaus Insurance Association and volunteers for her church. She will
walk soon in the Relay for Life for the American Cancer
Society, where someone from her team will be walking
at any given time during a 24- hour period.
Magda stays in top physical and mental condition
with daily exercise. That is important as she still works long
hours for Enterprise. She loves her co-workers and customers just as much as Maria and her mom said that she
would.
