Our Mission
Excellence without
exclusivity.
What is St. Francis all about?
St. Francis School was founded in 1985
with a mission of providing excellence
in education without exclusivity in
admissions. The school now serves
360 students, from preschool to eighth
grade, from a variety of backgrounds
and learning abilities.
St. Francis School is an independent,
interdenominational school providing
high-quality education to children from
pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. The
school is not affiliated with any church
or religious denomination or other
supporting organization.
St. Francis does not discriminate based
on religion, race, ethnicity, economics,
or academics. The target class size is
15 students in elementary and middle
school. Students come from 62 zipcodes
around Austin. By graduation, most
students test at least one full grade level
ahead of their actual grade.
Annual FUNdraisers
Board of Directors
Foremost among our fundraising activities is the Pinnacle Project—
the annual fund drive for St. Francis School, held each school year
from October through December. In the past, the Pinnacle Project has
funded items such as computers and school-wide Internet access, library improvements, a new playground, curriculum materials, and a
new middle school library.
Several other fundraising events are held each year. Students conduct a
magazine sale each fall to raise money for the athletic department.
The fall carnival AKA “The Howl,” a major volunteer effort of both
parents and students, is an annual fundraiser with booths, music, and
food for family fun. Book fairs, held both in the fall and spring, result
in cash and book donations for the elementary library. There is a Chili
Cook-Off and Garage Sale in the fall, and “Parents’ Night Out” evenings throughout the year that raises money for 8th graders traveling
to Italy over Spring Break. The annual 8th grade Italy trip is not only
fun, but an extensive learning opportunity for students. Finally the
Spring Gala, is a major source of funds, 2nd only to the Pinnacle Project—this event is traditionally dinner, drinks, music, and silent and
live auctions.
Fundraising activities at St. Francis are planned and implemented primarily by parent volunteers, and their success is a testament to the
dedication and commitment of our parents.

Annual Report
Meet the Head of School
Barbara Porter occupies a special place in the
history and life of St. Francis School. She is
both Founder and Head of School, and it is
her vision of education and attention to each
student’s unique assets and needs that has
driven the excellence for which St. Francis has
become known.
Barbara is British-born, raised and educated in
the north of England near the Yorkshire/
Lancashire border. After graduating from the
Victoria School of Education of Manchester
University, she taught in London for a short
time before taking a teaching position in the
United States.
Prior to moving to Austin, Barbara spent time
teaching in private schools in Indianapolis, Indiana and Sacramento, California. She also
spent three years teaching English as a second
language in Zaragoza, Spain. Austin has been
her home for over twenty-five years. During
most of this time she has been the Head of
School at St. Francis.
Since living in Austin, Barbara has spent
a number of years volunteering for
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and Hospice Austin. She is a graduate of the Leadership Austin class of
2000. Currently, Barbara serves on the
Board of TAAPS (Texas Association of
Accredited Private Schools), and is the
TAAPS Commissioner of the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission.
She is a member of “Town & Gown”
and serves on the Board of Trustees for
St. David’s Foundation Community
Fund and St. David’s Community
Health Foundation Initiatives.
Letter from St. Francis Board President
“It takes a village to raise a child” is an African proverb that
is the embodiment of our St. Francis School community. Our
community of parents, grandparents, donors, and local businesses has created an educational environment in which
each SFS child can achieve individual excellence, appreciate
human diversity, and learn values which will last a lifetime.
Your actions, through financial contributions and the giving
of your time, are a tribute to your commitment to St. Francis. During the 2012-2013 academic year, over 96% of families made a pledge during the Pinnacle Project, our annual
fundraiser. The Howl, the Spring Gala, the Pinnacle Project,
book fairs, magazine sales, patronizing of partnering businesses and other fundraising events were successful in raising over $250,000.00 for school operations and important
initiatives. These initiatives included teacher training and
salary increases, curriculum enhancements, scholarships,
and the establishment of the Madeline Anderson Middle
School Library. Other fundraising activities, such as the Chilicook off, the Garage Sale and Parents’ Night Out, help support the 8th graders’ annual trip to Italy, the homeland of our
namesake.
The Board of Directors continues to fulfill its responsibilities
of supporting the mission of the school and ensuring that St.
Francis remains financially sound. To that end, administrative and overhead costs remain low so that more of the revenues generated can fund program and curriculum costs.
Tuition is still among the lowest of private schools in Austin.
As we look back over the year, there are many achievements
to be proud of at St. Francis School. As we look forward,
there are many more goals to achieve. And as a village, I
know we will continue to raise a better child. THANK YOU.
Best,
Esther Hajdar
St. Francis Board President
