Exam season is upon us once again and we have heard quite a lot recently in the media about
the anxiety and stress that comes for students at this time of year. Feeling stressed especially
during exam time can feel quite normal and research has shown that a little short-term anxiety
can actually benefit your brain and body but people vary when it comes to how much stress
they can usefully take and parents are naturally, especially careful to make sure their children
are getting the right balance of work, leisure, diet and rest while they are busy revising in the
run up to exam dates.
In a radio interview recently I listened to British Olympic diving champion Leon Taylor
talking about his mentoring role with divers and how they prepare and calm themselves
moments before a dive.
Apparently the key is to empty their head of thoughts because thinking gets in the way.
Deep breathing and relaxing the shoulders is part of managing the pressure they feel as they
stand on their own, in full view of everyone, before they walk to the end of the board for the dive.
Divers train for hours to refine their skills which include managing the anxiety and being able
to ‘hold it together’.
Managing anxiety is a vital skill for life in our increasingly fast-paced world but we are by
no means the first to try and find ways of slowing things down when life threatens to overwhelm
us. Several passages in the bible tell us how Jesus would often slip away to secluded places to
be re-energized through quiet prayer and undisturbed communion with God. It was a habit with
Jesus and one that we can learn a lot from because it’s actually quite difficult to remove ourselves
from distractions and simply ‘be’, so like the divers, we need to work at taking a few minutes
in our daily life to quieten hectic thoughts and be open to what we can hear or feel around us.
There are lots of things to focus on from the sound of birdsong to the smell of cut grass and if
you are looking for a change of scenery why not call into St. Mary’s church to light a candle and sit
quietly – even with the chatter of the café in the background its possible to find peace and calm
within the ancient walls.
And for all the students out there facing exams – may God be with you as you sit your papers,
may He calm nerves and still anxiety, and may you know His peace and love this day and always.
Amen

June 2016
Finally I decided that my booklets were a prop
that saved me reading Bible lessons more
carefully and applying any insights I received to
today’s world. So the lot went to be recycled.
Now I only keep past editions if they include a
special topic. I have only one past edition at
present, so I am being very selective!

I have subscribed to the New Daylight Bible
These thoughts were prompted by two weeks’
worth of readings in the latest edition of the
Notes. They are about a very special and very
personal subject, which has left me reading and
re-reading every day’s offering.
Reading Fellowship Notes for more years than
I can remember. These appear three times a
year and until recently I kept all the back
numbers until I had quite a large boxful. There
were about sixty booklets representing twenty
years’ reading.
Rachel Boulding is Deputy Editor of the Church
Times newspaper and has previously been
senior Liturgy Editor at Church House
Publishing. Rachel has terminal cancer, and
has written twelve sets of notes under the
general heading of Facing death.
Apart from the personal benefit of framing my
morning prayers around the reading of the
day, I found it encouraging to think that many
other people were studying the same reading
and praying about it. As it is a pocket sized
booklet, some were probably reading it in the
train on their way to work.
I suppose that everyone who has known a
friend or a loved one in this situation will recall
how each of them coped with it. In my family,
forty years ago, the word cancer was never
used. When my step-father fell ill with this
horrid disease, my mother spoke only of a
‘stomach ulcer’ until the end. Of course, I
maintained the white lie for her sake; it was her
way of coping.
Bible reading
I catalogued all my back numbers so that I
could find Notes on almost any Bible topic
very quickly. The more popular topics will
have appeared several times over the years.
More than once a past reading has provided
help with a difficult sermon, and occasionally
a pithy sentence or two found their way into a
talk.
When Rachel suggested writing about her
situation, the editors of New Daylight
encouraged her to go ahead. They saw
something valuable in hearing the experience
of suffering cancer from the inside.
Rachel ends her introduction with these words:
‘In all my writing, I have tried to frame my
thoughts in the context of all life being a gift
from God, to be celebrated in the light of his
grace and love for each one of us.’
Two unusual thoughts have stayed with me
over the years. The first is a statement from a
clergyman writing some notes who declared at
one point that ‘he never prayed’. That took
some swallowing, as I could never and still
cannot imagine being an active Christian and
a minister and never praying. Keeping in
personal touch with the Lord is so important to
me, and so comforting at times.
The other comment is a little lighter, and came
from another clergyman who wrote that in his
home they never said Grace before meals
because all life is a gift from God.
I still have not quite understood that, although
I am conscious that some readers will be
distressed by reading about Rachel’s
experience, and I pray that they will be
comforted by happy memories rather than the
more difficult times at the end. If you would like
to have a copy of the latest notes, have a word
with Janet Pantrey or myself.

Pastoral Care Group

Although many people are quietly
caring for others during the week sometimes extra help
is needed with pastoral care. The benefice of Willesborough with Sevington has a small Pastoral Care
Group who visit people in hospital, care homes or in
their own homes, maybe as they recover from illnesses
or if they are housebound or bereaved. As part of
welcoming new members into the family of
St. Mary’s we are also happy to visit those with
children to let them know what is on offer for young
families at St. Mary’s. Unfortunately we don’t always
hear about people who would like a visit so please do
let Rev’d Dawn Stamper (07885 949416) or the church
office know (01233 624064 Mon-Thurs
between 10am and 4pm) in confidence, if either you or
someone you know, would appreciate one of our
visitors popping in to see them from time to time
either in hospital or at home.

Extract from minutes of PCC
meeting May 8th 1959:Present nine.
Report of proposed church lighting overhaul and
renewal. It was agreed to accept the estimate to
completely rewire and renew fittings at the
estimated cost of £36.
Report of concrete path to church. The ground on
one side of the path to be made up to allow cars to
park.
Treasurer report. Church expenses had been cleared
leaving a balance of £14-9-11. The repair fund of
£181-17-9 would gradually build up. The Board of
Finance had sent a further £50.
A letter has been received from Mr David Miller &
Family seeking permission for a memorial to the
church in memory of the late Rev. C. Miller, late
Rector of Sevington Church. It was suggested that
the Rector might write and ask if they would care to
give a pair of wardens staves as the church had none
and would be useful.
It was also mentioned that the Records of the church
should be sent to Canterbury for treatment in the
hope that they could be preserved from further
decay.
The Rural Dean paid a surprise visit to the church as
he was passing.
A meeting was arranged for the Archbishop’s visit
to the Service of Thanksgiving on July 26th1959.
End of meeting.
April rainfall totalled 56mm. April 2015 11mm. Year to
date 331mm, 2015 239mm.
On the agricultural front May and June are
sheep shearing months. Sheep are shorn for
two reasons – welfare and income. If sheep
are left unshorn a heavily fleeced animal, if
stressed, can have a fatal heart attack.
Thankfully rare, they have been known to
have an attack whilst being shorn.
If an animal is left unshorn, blowflies can
find places to breed and the attendant
problems follow. Income. When I
commenced at KWG in 1965 wool was a
valuable commodity and farm staff would
be instructed to walk perimeter fences
and extricate even the smallest scrap of
wool as it was of value. Then the price of
wool dropped dramatically in the and
1970’s there was no market for the
fleeces which had been packed into bales
and storage was a problem. The
company’s storage space was bursting at
the seams and hundreds of bales were
sent to Fagg’s Fleet depot at Woodchurch
turning, at the far end of Ashford’s
Beaver Road, adjacent to the then Milk
Marketing Board. The price of wool has
fluctuated ever since and within the last
twenty years farmers have at times
grudgingly shorn their animals as the
shearing costs exceeded income. The
value of wool has now risen again and
fleece sales held on a regular basis in
Bradford see all lots thankfully sold. A
successful period for wool was back in the
1980’s when the British Wool Marketing
Board manufactured a range of products,
jumpers, pullovers, cardigans, knitting
wools etc., which was successfully sold
into far-eastern markets with Britain also
selling these products, but unrest in, I
think the late 1980’s in China or Japan
abruptly brought this trade to an end,
never to return. To conclude, Fifty years
ago, when sheep and shepherds were
highly valued, the wool paid for the
shepherd’s wages or farm rent. Today,
animals and their wool are just another
commodity in the market place. Times
change but what goes around comes
around and maybe the times of the
1960’s will return?

Pilgrim Gardening Hints
for June
Hello and welcome to our mid-summer mix of handy
hints and fact-packed features aimed to entertain and
inform!
Off we go then with FIVE TOP TIPS FOR JUNE:Marrows, courgettes, sweetcorn and runner beans grown
under cover can be planted out this month; whilst a
sowing of a short row of peas every 2 -3 weeks will help
to avoid a glut.
Dead head Rhododendrons by hand so as not to damage
new shoots, and remove the suckers from roses and
lilacs before they get too big.
Try to do regular hoeing on a hot day while the weeds
are still young. Hand weed close to rows and around any
small plants.
Mow long grass where the foliage of naturalised bulbs
has died back. Raise the height of the cut on established
lawns because slightly longer grass should remain
greener during hot or dry spells.
Give evergreen hedges a light trim, taking care not to
disturb any remaining nesting birds.
THE A TO Z OF GARDENING is at the letter L, which
is for Lawn Sand. Regarded as old fashioned, it contains
ferrous sulphate which acts as a defoliant, and
ammonium sulphate which gives the grass a rich,
greener colour as well as boosting the acidic level of the
soil – vital for a good looking lawn.
As promised last time, here is an idea for a novel way to
grow a few vegetables if space is limited. Simply fork
over a small area in front of your flower borders, adding
a little compost and a sprinkling of some slow release
fertilizer such as Growmore.
Make shallow drills 6 -12 inches apart and sow them
thinly with lettuce, radish, carrot, cauliflower or even
onions. Thin out when the seedlings are large enough
and watch ‘em grow! They’ll look good amongst the
flowers and will rarely be attacked by pests or disease.
And on the subject of pests and diseases, watch out for
curled up leaves on roses; these will most likely contain
the sawfly larvae and should be picked off and
destroyed. The likes of ladybirds generally deal with
attacks of greenfly and blackfly, while a continuing
fortnightly spray of copper fungicide should help
prevent the spread of blackspot.
The lily beetle is apparently on the increase, but is easy
to identify with its bright red body and orangey-brown
grubs. Usually found on the underside of the leaves, they
should be picked off and destroyed by hand. It’s messy
but affective.
The black spotted green sawfly caterpillar can quickly
destroy gooseberry foliage. A proprietary pesticide is

possibly the best control. Also, beware of gooseberry
mildew, a fungal disease which appears as a white
powdery coating on leaves and shoots. It is easily
preventable by pruning, coupled with regular feeding
and watering.
It’s double issue time next time, which means two lots
of TOP TIPS and two from the A TO Z. We’ll also
look at taking softwood cuttings and discover what
serpentine layering is.
Until then, enjoy the fruits of your labours – no pun
intended – as you pick those sun warmed ripe
strawberries and dig the first of the new potatoes.
Just the thought is mouth-watering!
Happy gardening as always

There are significant and ongoing traffic problems at
the junction of Barrey Road and A2070 which need
to be addressed. The junction is the responsibility of
Highways England and is part of what they call
“Area 4”. Their email is [email protected]. These
are not the people who are dealing with the J10A
construction. It is important that you report issues,
delays and congestion arising from the lack of right
hand turn direct to Area 4 using their email address. Please copy me in, I will keep a log and the
pressure on them to deal with this junction. It will
only get worse as more shops open on the retail park.
Nestled under the North Downs in the
idyllic setting of Evegate, Old English

Our shop is full of rustic charm with

We specialise in flowers for weddings and

ABC will issue the next version of the local plan in early
June and this will include changes for the planning use
of Waterbrook and the area to the north west of

THIS IS WHEN MEDIATION CAN HELP!
Mediation provides a neutral third party to bring them
together and find a way forward which is acceptable to
both. Disagreements are sorted out confidentially without
the trouble and expense of going to court. Using
Mediation does not mean that you have complained about
your neighbour to some authority which might make the
disagreement worse. You are in control at all times.
Mediators will never take action or do anything without
your permission.
WHO ARE THE MEDIATORS?
Ordinary people who have been professionally trained to
help with neighbour problems.
They are all volunteers they do not take sides, nor do they
make judgements on the rights and wrongs of the issues.
WE CAN HELP
With disputes between neighbours, loud music, noisy
parties, parking, dogs barking, fences, hedges and
boundaries to name just a few.
You may not feel able to talk to your neighbour about the
problem – you may feel intimidated or perhaps you just do
not see the point of complaining any more as nothing
seems to change.
If you contact us we will LISTEN to your complaint and give
you the time you need to talk it through. ASHFORD
MEDIATION SERVICE is an INDEPENDENT organisation and
our services are FREE.
We will then arrange for two mediators to visit you at your
home or arrange neutral meeting place and hear your
account of things and then if you agree they will then offer
to visit the other party (who has the right to refuse, of
course) to hear their view of the situation. If both parties
are willing a “face to face” meeting may be arranged at a
neutral place, where you both can meet, with the
mediators, to seek an agreed solution.
Everything that is discussed is CONFIDENTIAL and IMPARTIAL.
Please ring Ashford Mediation Service on 01233-896237
(Please leave a message on the answer phone if is out of

Main issues are:

Preventative measures:
Do not leave valuables on display in cars

property)
More information can be obtained from the police and via:
PCSO Daniel Brown: [email protected], or call
101.
Parking on Pavements - following many complaints NWCF has been
looking at methods of providing advice to offenders; to this end
NWCF had been in contact with both the Police and ABC. Currently, it is only illegal to park on a pavement or grass verge in the
Greater London area. It is, however, illegal to drive on a pavement
or to obstruct a pavement, but very difficult to prove such an offence. NWCF will be following up on this so watch this space.
Speedwatch Update - Daniel Dryden gave the following report:
Speeding statistics (Feb to Apr 2016) were presented which showed
Hunter Road (20 mph) to be the speeding hotspot - it was accepted
that this was largely due to drivers trying to be courteous to traffic
waiting to pass parked cars - NWCF will be lobbying ABC and KCC
for further methods to reduce speed in this road.
One Ashford Hospital - Presentation by Michael Chalk
Ashford is One Hospital’s first hospital. It has been built on land
purchased from Houchin’s estate next to William Harvey Hospital
and is for private patients and those covered by private healthcare
plans. One Hospital is planning to build 3 hospitals per year over
the next ten years with the next being in Hatfield.
One Ashford Hospital can accommodate 20 patients. It will use
William Harvey’s pathology and high dependency (intensive care)
services when required. A concern from the floor was that this
would be a drain on WHH resources - it was explained that with
only 20 patients this would be minimal, plus WHH would be charging for these services.
Tours of the hospital can be arranged - for this and any other information contact the hospital on 01233 423000 or via http://
www.onehealthcare.co.uk/one-ashford-hospital
The Speedwatch team will be establishing new sites - if residents
have any suggestions please contact the team.
We are always looking for new volunteers.

Hythe Road Pedestrian Crossing - George Koowaree has advised
that he will be restarting the process to reinstate the pedestrian crossing near The Windmill Inn.
Junction 10a - Two major changes:
The scheme will now include the Stour Park (U19 warehouse estate)
junction.
The scheme will exclude the Barrey Road junction which will now
be dealt with by the regional Highways England division - this will
mean it will not be dependent on J10a going ahead and may be implemented sooner than the new J10a scheme. ABC is aware of this
and will be following up.
Steerco Vacancies -There are vacancies for a Treasurer and
Secretary.
The meeting concluded at9.10pm. The next Open Meeting (and
AGM) will be on the 10th August 2016.
Highways England will be applying for a Consent Order for the

Swan WI report
At Swan's May meeting members were able to look at and discuss the two Resolutions that are to be
voted on at the National meeting later in the year, it was decided to give our delegate the power of
discretion.
We then had a demonstration of hand bell ringing, given by St Mary's ringers.
They did a medley of hymns, classical, and traditional folk songs, some of which members sang along
too.
Afterwards members were invited to have a go themselves; there was much laughter as member's
attempted to raise a tune. The evening rounded off with a cuppa and social time.
On Saturday following our meeting we held a very successful Quiz Evening. Many thanks to all who
came along to support this event.
Monthly Lunch club at Aji's Ashford in June.
Indoor bowling taster session in June.
The next meeting will be held on Friday 3rd June 7.30pm at the Swan Centre South Willesborough.
Stained Glass is the subject for our next meeting.
Eve Muggeridge our speaker will tell us how a hobby became a business and demonstrate how to
make stained glass items.
Visitors are always welcome to come along and join us.

Willesborough based charity Ashford Counselling Service
has been awarded £144,650 to develop existing support
services for parents with postnatal depression in the local
area. The project aims to reduce social isolation and
provide support through group work and counselling.
Therapy will involve seeing a counsellor for 12 sessions
initially and for as long as required after this. Group
sessions will include a mum’s craft group, dad’s group
focusing on how they can support their partner and a
mixed gender group offering parenting advice for
step-parents.
As many as 1 in 7 women who give birth experience the
effects of postnatal depression. Supporting mums
through postnatal depression means that they can bond
more closely with their babies and children. This will have
a positive effect on the child’s development and the
impact could be felt for the rest of their life.
Tracy Dighton, General Manager of Ashford Counselling
Service said, ‘we have teamed up with Ashford Children’s
Centres to support women and men with postnatal
depression. This grant means we can help parents who
need an extra bit of emotional support.’
Craft Attack is a group run for women who have low
mood following childbirth. It involves having ‘time out’
from their families to undertake specific craft activities
with other women who have similar issues.
According to charity 4Children there are up to 35000
cases of postnatal depression a year in the UK, many of
which are undiagnosed. As many as one in ten men can
also be affected following the birth of their baby.
Anyone who thinks they might benefit from this service
can get in touch with their health visitor or contact
Ashford Counselling Service on 01233 610083.

Pictures of Prayer: Enjoy Space and Silence
@ St Mary’s Kennington
Last year the Prayer Development Team (PDT) in St.
Mary’s, Kennington organised three ‘Open Days’, when
the church was open for three hours on a Saturday during the middle of the day, so that people could come in
and have a quiet time. Encouraged by the response;
even to the one held towards the end of October, when
the weather was dreadful, and there were other events
taking place — the PDT has planned another Open Day,
the first this year, on Saturday, 11 June.
As before, the church will be open between 12.30 and
3.30 for you to come in and spend as long or as short a
time as you wish in the quiet of our beautiful church.
Refreshments will be available on a ‘help yourself’
basis rather than being served at a specific time, as the
emphasis is on enjoying silence and using it as a means
to draw closer to God.
The previous Open Days were all structured around
three short sessions of corporate prayer. These closed
with worship songs, in which all taking part joined with
enthusiasm. This next Open Day will be completely
different, in that there will be no sessions of corporate
prayer. Our aim this time is to encourage you to find
your own path to God by providing three stations which
will offer different stimuli for the senses , sight, touch,
smell, etc. and so help you to focus your thoughts.
We hope that you will join us as we enjoy God’s
presence in Space and Silence.
Dear ladies
NEWS FROM WILLESBOROUGH
W.I.
Is it just me or is this year just flying by?
Our May Meeting was taken up discussing Resolutions ,this serious and very interesting time in our year had
us all in solemn mood but not for long. Along came our speaker Eve Mason who spoke about her many years
experience in Pawn Broking, this proved to be very interesting and extremely funny.
On Thursday May 26th a coach outing has been arranged to Margate to visit the Turner Gallery and then on to
the Walpole hotel for lunch and a tour of the hotel to discover its history.
13th of June our next meeting the speaker will be coming from Dobbies, a good place to visit in Ashford for
gardening, lunch and teas, and all you could wish for to make a dream garden.
Craft & Games: 16th June at 2pm non members welcome. These are very pleasant afternoons with Scrabble,
Cards, tea and cakes. You don’t have to be a master at these games it is fun and you get to meet old friends
and make new ones. That’s about all for now we welcome anyone who would like to give us a try and if you

SWAN COMMUNITY GROUP
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Cllr. George Koowaree last year outside the shops on
the Industrial Estate.
The SWAN Community Group is now just over 25 years
old and it was established by the then South
Willesborough and Newtown Ward Councillor, the late
Gordon Turner, and a small band of committed
residents.
What was their first task in 1991? Only to change the
Parliamentary Bill which was being prepared to create
the Highspeed Line (HS1)!!! They certainly had big
ideas!!!
The Bill proposed to shut and remove in their entirety
the Aylesford Green level crossing and the footbridge
link between South Willesborough and Newtown and our
neighbours in North Willesborough. This would leave us
with only the long route via Boys Hall Road.
They needed to raise a large sum of money to employ a
barrister to assist in the presentation of their case to
keep the crossing or replace it with an underpass or
bridge and the group set to with a will. Alongside the
money raising effort was the creation of a huge petition
signed by the vast majority of SWAN residents.
All the team’s efforts were successful and the
underpass we now have from Newtown Road to
Aylesford Place was built so we could get to see
relatives, friends and the shops.
Over the last Bank Holiday Weekend, there were long
queues and 45 minute delays trying to get out of
Barrey Road and this will only get worse with the
increase in traffic due to the new shops in the Estate
and with the future development. The following
photographs from that weekend are courtesy of Ian
Sharp.
Comments which I have received since this campaign
started, is that there have been a large number of
bumper to bumper accidents (fortunately without
personal injuries except to the
policy holder’s insurance payments).
BARREY ROAD JUNCTION WITH THE A2070
Following on from the recent meeting of the M20 J10A
Community Group when Highways England announced that
the Barrey Road Junction had been removed from the
scheme, an online petition has been undertaken at
change.org (after logging on, search “Setting Up
Traffic Lights at the Barrey Road and A2070
junction”). This petition was set up by Retainagroup
Ltd, one of the firms on the Estate, and it is
supported by most if not all of the others.
The Community Meeting had been attended by Cllr. Paul
Bartlett, Cllr. George Koowaree, Cllr. David Smith
(me), SWAN Secretary Malcolm Webb and North
Willesborough Chair Ian Stevenson alongside other
Community and Parish representatives.
Will you please support the petition as soon as possible
and if you are unable to access the internet, please
write to me at the above address to support the
campaign.

Article from Willesborough Junior School
Cheerleading Workshop
On Friday 11th March, a group of Sports Leaders from Towers School came to
teach Year 5 cheerleading and netball. I was in the cheerleading group. First
of all they taught us basic Cheerleading movements for the dance at the end.
Next, they gave us a number and we got into lines. They then told us to do
different jumps to the other end of the old hall. After that, we got into groups
of 5 but our group only had 4.They showed us the 2 stunts we had to learn to
do. One of them was the flyer standing on each other’s thighs. The other one
was the flyer being lifted up by the legs. Finally, we got taught a dance that
we danced along to numbers. I really enjoyed it and I think everyone else did
too.
Written by Kyra, Green Woodpeckers.
Science Fair
Willesborough Junior School held their first Science Fair as part of the Science Week
celebrations. Year 5 worked in groups to create a range of experiments to teach the rest
of the school about the science in everyday activities and items. Each group explained
what was happening and provided guidance on how to do it at home. The children
brought in money to take part in the exciting
experiments such as making lava lamps, playing bubble tennis and making a volcano
explode.
It was a great success because Year 5 raised over £650, which will be used to provide a
science theatre group presentation for the whole school. The children learned a lot and
had great fun.

Sunday School is available every
Sunday in St Mary’s Willesborough
except the first Sunday of the month.
The Eucharist is a shared meal in the church, consisting of bread
(or wafers) and wine. This reminds us of the time Jesus spent with
his friends sharing food. A meal is also the centre of most family
gatherings and so it is for the Church Family. All welcome
