June is Stewardship Month for Music & Liturgy!
Redeemer has always been a community that has valued music
and liturgy, striving to live the Vatican Council II challenge to “Full,
active and conscious participation” each weekend. Our mission
statement is even entitled “The Spirit of Redeemer: To Answer
God’s Call.” You are no doubt familiar with the beautiful music Redeemer is known for, as well as our wonderful celebration of the
liturgy.
To continue to have the music and liturgy that we
cherish and that gives us life, much help will be required and there are many, many opportunities to
serve both in public ways and behind the scenes.
This month highlights these opportunities to serve
Redeemer through music and liturgical ministries. We encourage
you to visit the stewardship tables to see how you can answer
God’s call!
During the month of June, Music & Liturgy will be hosting a
display just outside of the Worship Space in the Worship
Commons, with information and sign-up sheets for various
opportunities. Stop by and see if you’re interested!
We will be kicking off the month with a brief handbell concert
featuring the Redeemer Ringers after the 8:00 mass on June
7. Hope to see you there!

Celebrating Our Faith
The worship space was full of energy in early May as the elementary faith
formation programs participated in their closing liturgies. Each class assisted in some way - serving as greeters, lectors, and ushers; preparing the
altar; and leading the prayers of petition. These were lively liturgies in
which our children were able to share their talents in a special way. Many
thanks to Father Jay; Mary Atkinson and Tad Stilwell - the prayer leaders
for the evenings; our musicians – John Bagley and Erin Woods; and our
Eucharistic ministers for making our celebrations possible. Thank you also
to all those who contributed to the collections to help sponsor Haitian children.
Through their efforts this year our catechists have helped our young people to encounter Jesus in the weekly Gospels, and to come to a deeper understanding of our Catholic faith. With their
help our children have studied the key teachings of the creed, the commandments, the sacraments
and the basic prayers of our church. The catechists’ many hours of preparation and sharing faith
with our children are deeply appreciated!
A big round of applause also goes to: the session coordinators – Joy Akins and Anne Sims
for being here to supervise and lock up each week; Michelle Carr, Patty McGann, Margaret Thompson and Kylie Turnauer who led the opening and closing gatherings; and our many substitutes and
nursery workers. Please consider sharing your talents with us next year!
Dear Church of the Redeemer ParishionersWe appreciate all the help we received during our time of grief. Thank you for the
lovely reception following the funeral
Sincerely,
The family of Ethel McNamara

EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
June 7, 2015
At the 10:00 a.m. mass on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ on June 7, we will have a Eucharistic Procession with the Blessed Sacrament inside the Worship Space. Immediately following the Prayer after Communion,
the presider will take a host consecrated at that mass, and place it in the monstrance; he will wear a cope and humeral veil customary for Eucharistic processions. After incensing the Blessed Sacrament, the priest, deacon and
servers will process around the inside of the church while the community sings, “Adoramus Te Domine.”
When the brief procession concludes back at the altar, the ministers will depart; however, the Eucharist will be exposed in the monstrance for thirty minutes; and the community will be invited to stay for private devotion with the
Blessed Sacrament, after which it will be reposed in the tabernacle.
It is important that we maintain a level of prayerful respect and dignity during the procession, so it is necessary for
there to be as little movement, talking, and noise as possible to maintain respect for the presence of Christ in the
Blessed Sacrament, and for those wishing to pray. Parishioners and friends who leave Mass after the procession
are asked to depart the Worship Space in complete silence out of respect for those engaged in private prayer and
devotion.
Why does the Catholic Church have processions? In our Catholic culture, processions are an intimate part of our
liturgical and spiritual life that dates back to our Jewish roots. Catholic processions are a type of pilgrimage first
undertaken by the Jews to represent important historical events. We have processions to remind us that our Christian life is a constant movement toward God and our eternal home. We are, after all, a pilgrim people.
Pope John Paul II declared October 2004 through October 2005 as the “Year of the Eucharist.” In his Apostolic
Letter Mane Nobiscum Domine he urged that Catholics participate in a procession on the Feast of Corpus Christi.
Very early (in the fourteenth century!) the custom developed of carrying the Blessed Sacrament in a splendid procession through the town after the mass on Corpus Christi Day. This was encouraged by the popes, some of
whom granted special indulgences to all participants. The Council of Trent (1545-1563) solemnly approved and
recommended the procession on Corpus Christi as a public profession of the Catholic faith in the real presence of
Christ in the Holy Sacrament.
During the later Middle Ages these processions developed into imposing pageants of devotion and honor to the
Blessed Sacrament. They are still held publicly, and often with the ancient splendor, in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, in the Catholic sections of Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Canada, Hungary, and in
the Slavic countries and South America. Sovereigns and princes, presidents and ministers of state, magistrates,
members of trade and craft guilds, and honor guards of the armed forces accompany the liturgical procession while
church bells peal, bands play sacred hymns, and the faithful kneel in front of their homes to adore the Eucharistic
Lord. Houses along the route of the procession are decorated with little birch trees and green boughs. Candles
and pictures adorn the windows; and in many places, especially in Latin countries, streets are covered with carpets
of grass and flowers, often wrought in beautiful designs.
Eucharistic processions are something new for us at Church of the Redeemer. Our hope is that we offer prayerful
and meaningful opportunities of our Catholic faith and tradition. Our goal is to bring Christ closer to all, and to
provide prayerful and sacramental liturgies and prayer to enhance our faith in unity with Catholics across the world.

All is Quiet in the Redeemer Nursery
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not
hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as
these."
Jesus is instructing us to be like little children to belong to His
kingdom. Nowhere is this more evident than in the toddler
nursery here at Redeemer.
Those called to this ministry have an abounding love for the
toddlers and their parents. To be with these little people for
an hour a week and teach them the love of Jesus at the most
fundamental level is a deeply enriching experience.
Getting to know their parents on a first name basis and receiving their trust with their most prized possessions is a great honor for a me, a humble nursery
worker.
The nursery at Redeemer is very quiet because the toddlers are surrounded with love by a dedicated few who have a passion for excellence.
We don't rotate or assign or count turns. We just show up so that we can exude the love of Christ
into these little lives and go home knowing that in a very small way we have made a difference.
Please consider visiting us before or after the 10 am Mass on Sunday and see for yourself the difference one person can make, as a volunteer.
STEWARDS NEEDED
Redeemer's Stewardship Council is actively searching for stewards with generous hearts to serve
on the Stewardship Council. More hands are needed to help parishioners explore and discover their
talents, to expand participation in Redeemer’s many ministries and to support parishioners in their
service to our parish and the surrounding community. The Stewardship Council meets on the 2nd
Wednesday of each month from 7:00-8:00 pm at Redeemer. Join us for coffee and pastries after
the 8:00 mass on Sunday, June 21 in Genesis Hall commons to learn more about us or join us for
our next meeting. If you have any questions, you can reach Reagan Penny at 804-2471042 or [email protected].
GLUTEN-FREE HOSTS
Are you or a family member unable to receive the host at Mass because of gluten intolerance? Did you know we have gluten-free hosts available? Please
call the church office for additional information.

Update on Change of Saturday Evening (Vigil) Mass Time
In Pope Francis’ “Joy of the Gospel”, he asks us to not be afraid to re-examine our parish customs
and to discern as a community if our customs are directly related to the heart of the Gospel. He
asks us to constantly be aware of our customs and to not fall into the trap of doing things “because
that is the way we have always done it”. (Fr. Mike Renninger on “Joy of the Gospel”)
A few months ago, some parishioners came forward with a request to change the time of the Saturday evening Mass. This Mass is called the Vigil Mass. Various reasons were brought forth for the
change.
Some of the reasons were:
It is very dark in the winter when Mass is over and driving is more difficult.
We are losing parishioners to other Parishes that have earlier Masses.
We could rent the Hall out on Saturday evening if Mass were earlier and make some money.
An earlier Mass may be more beneficial for dinner for families with children and parishioners
with medical needs.
In heeding our Pope’s message, Pastoral Council and the Leadership Team felt compelled to poll
the parishioners to see what the response would be to a change in the Vigil Mass time. A survey
of parishioners was conducted in mid-March. Approximately 400 responses were received. The
results of the poll showed that there was not a clear consensus on a different time for the Vigil
Mass, therefore, that Mass time for Saturday evening will remain the same, 5:30 pm. Of the options available, the clear consensus was to make No Change to the 5:30pm Saturday Evening Vigil
Mass time.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey. Your input and comments are very much
appreciated.
Choir Open House
Have you ever considered joining Redeemer’s adult choir, but were afraid to take the first step?
Well, now is the perfect time to come see what it’s like to be part of this talented and spiritual group
of people! The choir is inviting anyone interested in singing next fall to join them at their final rehearsal Tuesday, June 9 at 7:00 pm. After a brief rehearsal, there will be an ice cream social where
you can get to know the choir and ask any questions you may have.

Catholic Diocese of Richmond
7800 Carousel Lane
Richmond, VA 23294-4201
Dear Bishop DiLorenzo,
We gratefully thank you for your recent collections during service to support the work of the Health
Wagon. With the goal of $170,000 and an amount of $84,000 collected to date, we expect the goal
to be met with the additional funds yet to be sent in by various parishes.
The need for health care is ever growing here in southwest Virginia. The Health Wagon remains
dedicated and strongly committed to serving the health care needs of the uninsured,
underinsured, and disenfranchised in the mountains of Appalachia in Southwest Virginia. The services of the Health Wagon have never been more needed than today. In recent months, there has
been an overwhelming increase of new patients seeking care that were previously covered by insurance. Just this year, we have already seen an increase of 120 new patients. This is in addition on to
our current patient base of over 4,000. Since the Health Wagon was founded by Sister Bernie
Kenny, acting on behalf of the Diocese of Richmond, it is heartwarming that the entire Catholic Community throughout the Diocese still actively and graciously supports the efforts of St. Mary's Health
Wagon and the Appalachian region as a whole. Without the support and collaboration of organizations such as the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and the individual supporters within, our work and
our mission would not be possible.
Again, thank you for your commitment to bringing health care to those in need.
Sincerely,
Teresa Gardner, DNP,MSN,FNP-BC,FAANP

BOOK YOUR SPACE NOW!
Our Lady of Lourdes parishioners will be joining our “icy” mountain adventure and spaces
are going fast! EVEREST Vacation Bible School will be held Monday through Friday, June 22 June 26, from 9:00 to noon. At EVEREST we’ll explore one of the most majestic, beautiful (and
sometimes dangerous!) places on earth. As the Climbing Crews “trek,” they will discover God’s
power and promises all along the way.
We are now recruiting:
- Members of the climbing team - Youth and adult volunteers are needed to help at the many
stations on our climb - games, drama, crafts, snack, preschool, etc., and as climbing crew guides.
- Climb participants – Registration is open for the first 125 rising K-5th graders. (A limited number
of preschool openings may be available once all volunteers’ preschoolers have been registered.)
Details and registration for both participants and volunteers are available on the church
website or at https://www.groupvbspro.com/vbs/ez/RedeemerMech2015.
When you make it to the top of EVEREST, you’re at the highest point on earth. But Jesus is
higher still! He promises to provide, to comfort, to love us forever, and more. At EVEREST, climbers learn that his awesome power is enough to overcome any “mountain” or problem in their lives.
On EVEREST, kids become anchored in rock-solid Bible truths - ready to face life’s challenges. The five days of mountain adventure will help them discover God’s mighty power, and
leave as more confident, faith-filled people ready to pursue a lifelong friendship with Jesus!
THANK YOU to everyone who is supporting our adventure by donating items from the tag
board.
Back For A Limited Time Engagement!
Redeemer is delighted to welcome back a familiar face. Former music minister, Cindy Jennings,
will be leading us in song again as cantor at the 8:00 and 10:00 liturgies during the summer. She is
looking forward to singing for the Redeemer community again.
Cindy’s return will enable our hardworking cantors to take a well-deserved vacation over the summer. She will also serve as mentor to some of our newer
cantors. If you believe you have the gift of song and a prayerful spirit and think
you would like to lead the congregation as cantor, there will be a brief informational meeting in the Worship Space June 9 at 6:30 pm. Please contact Erin
Woods if you’re interested in attending.

HELP US CONTINUE OFFERING CHILDREN’S LITURGY!
At weekend liturgies we offer a separate Liturgy of the Word for our elementary school children, but it can only happen if adults are willing to serve as leaders. Please prayerfully consider volunteering to help with this important ministry. Information and sign-up opportunities will be available
at the Liturgy stewardship table after Masses this month or by contacting Terry Colville - 746-4911 [email protected]. Current Children’s Liturgy ministers should also stop by the table
or email to renew their commitment to this ministry. (I need to check this with Erin.)
WHAT IS CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD?
Children’s Liturgy is a worship experience in which children in grades K-5 celebrate through prayer,
readings and reflection appropriate to their age. With the assistance of adult leaders, they discover
the meaning of the gospel for their own lives, before returning to the assembly for the Liturgy of the
Eucharist. The goal of Children’s Liturgy is to allow children to more fully participate in the Liturgy of
the Word. Children hear the scriptures in a language they can understand and have the opportunity
to reflect on and respond to God’s Word.
WHAT DO LEADERS DO?
Children’s Liturgy volunteers are scheduled on a rotating basis. No one is scheduled more often
than once a month. Children’s Liturgy does not meet on major holidays or Baptism weekends.
A training session will be held later this summer. Volunteers receive materials including an outline of
the liturgy with the readings, prayers, discussion questions, etc. ahead of time. They are expected
to read and reflect on the readings ahead of time and review the materials provided. On their scheduled Saturday or Sunday they arrive in time to sign in and set up their gathering space.

CONFIRMATION - AN INVITATION
In accordance with the diocesan guidelines for Confirmation preparation, this process is open
to any youth who are at least 15 years of age and entering at least the 10th grade. These youth
must attend the regular Youth R.E. program or the family-centered program, as well as additional
Confirmation sessions (approximately 6) and a retreat.
The Confirmation process begins with an “Inquiry” phase to assist candidates and parents in
discerning their readiness for sacramental preparation. There are two main elements to this phase:
- Candidates and parents must attend an orientation session before registering.
- Candidates and parents must participate in a brief interview with the pastor or his delegated individuals before preparation begins.
All current 9th - 11th graders who have not been confirmed should have received an email in
April inviting them to an orientation session. There is one remaining session scheduled on Sunday,
June 13, after the 10:00 Mass. All interested youth, and at least one parent, must attend one of
these meetings before registering for Confirmation. These meetings are critical to understanding
the requirements of the process and discerning your ability to commit to it for the coming year.
Please e-mail [email protected] to register for the orientation sessions or to
‘opt-out’ of the process for the coming year.

World Meeting of Families, September 21-27, 2015:
Held every three years and sponsored by the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for the
Family, the World Meeting of Families is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the
event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The
theme of the World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015 is “Love Is Our Mission:
The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our
society.
Anyone interested should contact the Office of Marriage and
Family Life at the diocese.
