NOTES ON THE MODELS:
All the Star Trek ships herein were built by me from commercially available model kits, or parts thereof. If a design was inspired
by someone else, I make note of it below.
NOTES ON THE ARTWORK:
Photo compositions are executed using Corel PhotoPaint. Some 3D elements are created using Caligari TrueSpace 5, and Daz
Bryce 5. Background images are often astronomical photographs taken from NASA websites. The calendar was assembled in
CorelDRAW! X3 (Version 13).
JANUARY

SHIP: USS Belisarius
SHIP: USS Peregrine
SCALE: 1/537
SCALE: 1/537
PROJECT: Over-the-top fanboy dreadnought.
PROJECT: Federation "Bird of Prey" based on Romulan BoP seen in "Balance of Terror"
INGREDIENTS: Ertl USS Enterprise-A secondary hull, one Ertl USS Reliant. Accurate Parts Reliant A/B/C decks. Millenium
Models docking hatches.
INGREDIENTS: Ertl USS Reliant. Ertl USS Enterprise nacelles.
WORK: Reliant hull shortened by 2" so it looked more balanced as a saucer section. New main nacelle pylons scratchbuilt from
Evergreen sheet plastic. Neck extended aft with sheet plastic. Bridge modified with two docking ports. Phaser turret balls replaced
with lead shot.
Painted Light Sea Gray and RLM 02 Gray using Walker brass templates for saucer, and card templates for the rest.
Decals are JTGraphics Reliant decals, plus JT's Reliant detail decals, plus homemade Alps decals for name and numbers.
WORK: Reliant main hull completed stock. New "wings" scratch built from Evergreen sheet plastic. New torpedo deck built under
nose using sheet plastic and torpedo tubes from Reliant kit.
Home made Alps decals.
BACKGROUND: Mars from orbit, color-altered to remove the red and look like a snow-covered landscape. The Klingon is a
model photo, ripped apart in PhotoPaint. The flames are a Hubble astronimical photo of a nebula, warped, twised, blurred and
color-enhanced.
BACKGROUND: Hubble photo with a little retouching. The Klingon is a photo of my old Ertl model.
THE NAME: I was reading Eric Flint & David Drake's Belisarius novels at the time I made this, about Rome's greatest general of
the 6th century AD.
MARCH
APRIL
SHIP: SS Reeses
SHIP: USS Soryu
SCALE: 1/650
SCALE: 1/1000
PROJECT: Started as a gag for my friends on the Polar Lights message board. PL hadn't made any Star Trek kits yet, so I
thought I'd bash something together using then-available Polar Lights kits.
PROJECT: Long ago while playing with GameScience gaming miniatures, I'd stuck a standard Enterprise saucer on a
dreadnought hull and thought it looked cool. This is the definitive version thereof.
INGREDIENTS: Polar Lights Jetsons Family Car, PL repop of Aurora's Dick Tracy Space Coupe.
INGREDIENTS: Polar Lights 1/1000 Enterprise, PNT Models 1/1000 dreadnought conversion kit.
WORK: The saucer is the PL jetsons car inverted. The 2ndary hull is the Space Coupe. An Evergreen plastic tube connects them.
The bottom of the saucer is filled out with an AMT TIE fighter (Vader's) stand, which is a simple dome. The nacelles are the rocket
boosters from Lindberg's 1/200 scale space shuttle, mounted on pylons made of Evergreen tube and square stock. The bridge is
a tire from an old Airfix airplane kit. Top and bottom domes and the deflector are from the old AMT Enterprise. Decals are home
made on my Alps printer.
WORK: Simpley gluing the Enterprise saucer (and neck) to the dreadnought hull wasn't enough for me, so I grafted the
Enterprise's hangar onto the DN's tail. Having hangars fore and aft turned it into a "through-deck cruiser." Home made decals,
naturally. The tiny phaser turret balls are 1mm glass beads found at a craft store.
BACKGROUND: An alien ship I created in Caligari TrueSpace years ago, rendered out in Bryce with an organic texture. The
planet is Mars, color-altered, with a NASA photo of a nebula behind it.
BACKGROUND: A compilation of NASA photos, with the Orion Nebula in the background and two of Saturn's moons. I tweaked
the colors to make it more Star Trek-like.
THE NAME: Soryu was a Japanese aircraft carrier in WWII. Their ship names were often quite poetic. Soryu means "Blue-Green
Dragon."
THE NAME: Inspired by the commercial for Reeses' Peanut Butter cups: "You got chocolate in my peanut butter!" "You got peanut
butter in my chocolate!" Well, in this case, I got Jetsons in my Dick Tracy.

SHIPS: Dreadnought USS Dominion, Frigate USS Coventry, Destroyer USS Shaitan
SHIPS: Surya Class Frigate USS Illusive, Ptolemy Class Tug
SCALE: 1/1000
SCALE: 1/1000
PROJECT: The Coventry is the main kitbash featured here. I wanted to recreate it as exactly as possible from Todd Gunther's
design in Ship's of the Star Fleet, Volume I, published by Mastercom Data Center in 1987.
PROJECT: Franz Joseph's tug from the 1975 ST Tech Manual, and Aridas Sofia's Surya Class from Ships of the Star Fleet.
INGREDIENTS: Polar Lights Enterprises, PNT's tug conversion, Starship Modeler's Surya conversion.
INGREDIENTS: Polar Lights Enterprises
WORK: The Coventry is basically the Polar Lights 1/1000 Enterprise saucer with is aft section covered with sheet plastic. I made
patterns directly from Gunther's drawings in the book, scanned and resized to scale. Decals for the two FJ design were home
made on my Alps. Decals for the Coventry are from JTGraphics (from HIS Alps printer).
The dreadnought is PNT Models' coversion kit for Polar Lights' 1/1000 Enterprise. The Destroyer is a simple rearrangement of the
PL Enterprise's parts to match Franz Joseph's 1975 Technical Manual design.
WORK: PNT Models' Ptolemy Class resin conversion kit and cargo pods. The kit consists of a resin neck that fits under the kit
saucer, and the inverted engine pylons fit to. The kit nacelles then had to have their details inverted as well.
Starship Modeler's Surya Class resin conversion kit consists of the entire hull and two engine pylons. Kit engines then have to be
inverted. Home made decals for the Illusive.
BACKGROUND: Another astronomical photo. The blast holes on the pod and the escaping gasses were added in PhotoPaint
THE NAME: Illusive is in the list of names of Surya class frigates in SotSF.
BACKGROUND: All three ships are combined onto a completely computer-generated background. The starfield and nebula were
created using Flaming Pear's "Glitterato" filter for Photoshop (which also works with Corel PhotoPaint). The planet was created
with Flaming Pear's "Lunar Cell" filter in a separate document and pasted into the nebula.

SHIP: USS Coeur de Lion
SHIP: USS Venture
SCALE: 1/537
SCALE: 1/537
PROJECT: A really over the top battleship inspired by the Adamant Class dreadnought in the book Starfleet Prototype.
PROJECT: An exploration ship inspired by Michael Morristette's USS Menahga, with many alterations.
INGREDIENTS: Two (and a bit) Ertl USS Reliants, one Ertl refit Enterprise
INGREDIENTS: One Ertl refit Enterprise
WORK: 2 Reliant top halves make up the forward section. An Accurate Parts A/B/C deck on top, the kit one below. The shuttle
bay machinery underneath are sealed with sheet, and details from the Reliant's bottom transferred. Onto the rear of this I grafted
the 2ndary hull of an Enterprise, with much putty. On the very tail of the 2ndary hull I fixed two sets of Reliant impulse engines,
blended with much sheet plastic and putty. The four Reliant engines are mounted on an assembly of engine pylons from three
Reliant kits.
WORK: The saucer and nacelles are all that's left of the model kit. The secondary hull is made up of sheet plastic with a shaped
balsa bottom. Likewise, the beavertail hull and engine pylons are also sheet plastic. The deck 4/5 arboretum windows were
inspired by early concept art for Star Trek: the Motion Picture.
BACKGROUND: Another astronomical photo for the backdrop. The two asteroids are Galileo photos of Saturn's moon Phoebe.
Yup, two photos of the same moon. The Bird of Prey is the Ertl model kit. Shield flare effects are taken from photos of sparklers
and such.
BACKGROUND: 100% computer generated, using Bryce 5. Inverted mountains were boolean-embedded into an infinite plane to
create the scar, and a suffciently techno-looking texture was picked out (oddly enough, a natural texture called "etched rock"!).
The park-like arboretum interior was also generated in Bryce, and matted into the windows in the final art.
THE NAME: Modeled years before the Galaxy Class USS Venture was featured in a Deep Space Nine episode, I picked the
name as a reference to the ship used in King Kong to explore for Skull Island
THE NAME: A great battleship named after a great warrior king. "Couer de Lion" is the French for "Lion Heart," nickname of King
Richard I of England.
SEPTEMBER
OCTOBER
SHIP: USS Dominion
SHIP: USS Terrell
SCALE: 1/1000
SCALE: 1/1000
PROJECT: Franz Joseph's dreadnought design from his 1975 Star Trek Technical Manual.
PROJECT: A frigate based on the USS Reliant's arrangement, but using USS Excelsior parts instead, inspired by Jackill's
attempts at same..
INGREDIENTS: Nacelles from two Polar Lights 1/1000 Enterprises, one PNT Models dreadnought conversion kit.
INGREDIENTS: One Ertl USS Excelsior kit.
WORK: PNT's conversion kit is really almost a whole kit by itself. It consists of the entire ship except for the engine nacelles,
which are then borrowed from the Polar Lights kit. Since there are three engines, I needed to take them from two kits. I departed
from the instructions in turning the central engine's intercooler details upward, instead of keeping them to one side. I made my
own decals for the Dominion, conjectural markings placing it after the original TV series' time period.
WORK: I built a superstructure over the aft half of the saucer using sheet plastic, and added hangars under the impulse engines. I
flipped the engines upside-down and carved an underhull out of balsa wood to mount them to. Custom decals, which in this case
were printed on a laser printer.
The other ship is a Franz Joseph scout, USS Crockett, made from PNT's scout conversion kit, which consists of a neck, a
deflector mast, and some parts to reposition the nacelles greeblies.
BACKGROUND: The starfield was generated with Flaming Pear's Glitterato filter. The exploding neutron star and its expanding
nebula were generated with Bryce 5 using various volumetrics in concentric spheres. I then applied a zoom-blur in Photopaint and
added the polar beams.
BACKGROUND: Another NASA photo. The explosion is yet another photo of a nebula with its colors changed and a zoom-blur
applied. Nebulae make great explosions, since they basically are damn big ones!
THE NAME AND NUMBER: The Reliant was NCC-1864, and she was commanded by Captain Terrell until Kahn took the ship.
This ship honors both Terrell in name, and Reliant in number (plus 1000).
THE NAME: I've been naming dreadnoughts "Dominion" for years before Deep Space Nine stigmatized the name. It's from Franz
Joseph's original list of dreadnought names, and, I think, the coolest of his choices.
NOVEMBER
DECEMBER
SHIP: USS Kirov
SHIP: USS Masao
SCALE: 1/1000
SCALE: 1/1000
PROJECT: A dreadnought with a more integrated look than just pasting a third nacelle on, again inspired by various such designs
in Jackill's books.
PROJECT: An Internet collaboration to produce a destoyer that improves on Franz Joseph by including an integral hangar and
sensor dish.
INGREDIENTS: One Ertl USS Excelsior kit, two Ertl USS Enterprise-B kits.
INGREDIENTS: One Polar Lights 1/1000 Enterprise kit
WORK: Enterprise-B saucer. The bottom of the saucer was replaced with the top of an Excelsior saucer to beef it up. An E-B
2ndary hull was given an extended "belly" with the front of an Excelsior hull flipped backwards. The aft bottom of the Excelsior hull
was inverted and placed on top as an extended superstructure. Main engine pylons were split, mounted to the hull sides and
spread outward to clear that big stupid impulse engines. The third nacelle had to be patched together from the inner halves of two
nacelles. The rest is sheet plastic. A very extensive conversion!
WORK: The kit's hangar deck area was grafted onto the saucer with great heaping gobs of putty to blend it. The sensor/deflector
housing is a drop tank from a 1/48 Messerschmitt. The dish itself from AMT's old triple-spaceship set. The neck had to be
lengthened a bit below the housing with extra plastic. The rest was your basic "glue the engine on the end of the neck"
conversion. As for the paint job, well, I've always wanted to do a destroyer in Kieth Ferris camoflage.
BACKGROUND: The starfield was generated with Flaming Pear's Glitterato filter. The alien spaceships were created in Caligari
TrueSpace and rendered in Bryce 5. Motion blurs were applied later in PhotoPaint.
THE NAME: Yes, this bash is so old the Soviet Union still existed! Their mightiest battlecrusier at the time was the Kirov, named
for a Soviet political figure. It has since been renamed for someone more politically correct, but I don't care to refinish my model
just because of that.
BACKGROUND: The starfield was generated with Flaming Pear's Glitterato filter, and the planet with Lunar Cell. The starbase is
a CGI space station I created in Caligari TrueSpace, and it's rendered in Bryce 5. Other ships flitting about are the Soryu,
Coventry and Shaitan, featured elsewhere in the calendar.
THE NAME: The model came about as a collaboration of posters on the TrekBBS.com message board. A poster called "Warped
9" used his Photoshop skills to create the design from stills of the TV Enterprise. He was inspired by a design by Masao Okazaki
in his Starfleet Museum website. I took the ball and ran with it, creating a 3D model inspired by their 2D art. Wraped and I both
thought it was proper to name it after Masao.
