Welcome to the 25th annual
Triangle J Ranch Bull Sale.
As we look back on 25 years of bull sales, we want to say Thank You
to all of our customers for their many years of commitment to the
Triangle J Ranch program. Twenty-five years ago, a few friends and
neighbors showed up to buy a small number of bulls that we sold in a
silent auction format. I don’t remember how much the bulls averaged
or what their bloodlines were, but I remember who was kind enough to
show up that day. Many of you are still buying bulls today, or passed
that torch on to the next generation. Whatever the case may be, it has
been a blessing to meet so many good cattlemen over the years, and I
thank you for your continued support.
The bull offering for 2015 will be loaded with elite bloodlines from
top AI sires and embryo bulls from our very best donor females. This is a
great opportunity to buy half brothers or take it a step further and buy
flush mate full brothers in volume. Whatever your needs may be, you
will be able to minimize calving difficulty, maximize hybrid vigor, and
produce progeny with high carcass value.

Terms of the sale are cash. Every animal will be sold to the highest
bidder. Announced changes in the catalog information on sale day take
precedence over printed material in this catalog.
All cattle are the buyer’s property as soon as sold and will be cared for
a reasonable length of time at the buyer’s risk. Any person attending
the sale does so at his own risk. Neither the sale management, owners,
nor any person connected with this sale, assumes any liability, legal or
otherwise. All animals listed in catalog having Homozygous Black or
Homozygous Polled are done so to the best of our knowledge. We are
not liable for any inaccuracies.
Registration and Transfer:
Registration certificates will be transferred to buyers upon request at
seller’s expense. When making settlement, buyers must give complete
written name and address information for making transfers.

All bulls selling for $3500 or more are guaranteed against breeding
soundness, injury and death for the first breeding season (90 days
from turn out). If a bull is injured or dies, a satisfactory replacement
will be provided or a credit will be issued for next year’s sale for the
bulls full purchase price, less salvage value received. Please contact
us as soon as a problem arises to receive credit. All bulls will have
passed a fertility test before their March 20th delivery.
Yearling Weights, Ultrasound Carcass Data, Scrotal Measurements, Frame Scores,
and Weight Per Day of Age, will all be available sale day.

We were looking for a bull that was 1/2 Angus, 1/2 Simmental,
Homozygous Black, Homozygous Polled, with calving ease, and of good
quality. Triangle J Ranch had what we were looking for.
Over the last 9 years, we’ve purchased 19 bulls from Darby. Four years
ago, we decided to buy bulls only from him. Here are the reasons why.

I have purchased 15 Angus and Sim-Angus bulls from the Triangle J
Ranch since 2003 and have been pleased with the offering of moderate
framed, easy fleshing, high performing bulls that Darby and his crew
have produced each year. I know as a commercial beef producer, that
hybrid vigor is vital to profitability and that the complementarity of
the Simmental and Angus breeds is unbeatable. I have sorted through
Sim-Angus herds in a 5 state area and have found that the quality and
consistency runs deeper in the Triangle J herd than any I’ve looked

Quick Guide to ASA EPDs and Indexes
Expected progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.
In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their
progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in the progeny
(moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units.) The key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example,
if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B.
If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other
words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required
to determine where a bull’s EPD rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed
information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when
used on heifers.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births
in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MM): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning
weight due to milk and growth.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the
cowherd of six years of age.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
Marbling (Marb): Marbling score.
Back Fat (BF or B Fat): Inches of back fat.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (Shear): Pounds of force
required to shear a steak.
All-Purpose Index (Api): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Terminal Index (Ti): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for details.)
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, then only
provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical
computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same
technology that led to develop the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was
used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (Api): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature
cows) with the portion of daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put
on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (Ti): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using Api and Ti: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use Api, if not, Ti. Then, just as with
EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The
difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you
can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose sire, you can quickly figure a bull
scoring +100 for Api is worth an extra $6000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd.
x 4 yr. = $6000.) A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other
bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

continue to be positive.
Canadian semen rights were sold to Semex last spring. A large volume of semen has also been distributed
in Australia. U.S. semen is sold through Triangle J Ranch and shipped from Nebraska Bull Service in
McCook, NE at $30 per unit.
Cowboy Cut is the softest, soundest purebred bull you will find anywhere. It is just a bonus that progeny
are super attractive and very docile.
Spring 2013 ASA Sire Summary
Our 46W Donor continues to break the 205 day record for weaning weight. Last year she set the bar high
with a record 881 pound weaning weight. As you can see she set the bar high again with the Lot 1 bull. All of
the flushmates are big bodied and easy fleshing, just like their dam.

Our 4P Donor has done a fantastic job of making attractive long bodied bulls with above average power.

TJ Miss New Day U14 has earned her way to the
Donor pen by raising 4 outstanding bulls. Each one
at the very top of our bull sale the last four years.
Her 2013 bull standout was, of course, the extremely
popular bull “Centerstage” that sold for a record
setting $60,000. Unfortunately, we lost Centerstage
shortly after the sale and before any semen was
collected from him.
It was unfortunate, but as the saying goes “try, try
again”. We flushed U14 back to Upgrade and the
result is one of the best flushes ever at Triangle J. Bulls
with a lot of body, loaded with muscle, and of course
that great look that U14 adds to all of her progeny.

Slugger is a bull that we did not use a lot of earlier because of him being a Rookie son and because of the fact
that we used Rookie so hard for so many years. We are now taking a serious look at this bull and finding him to
be very useful in a new way. He is a proven calving ease sire that adds a lot more ribshape and fleshing ability
than most heifer bulls. He has built himself an eye opening 175 API. Two of the four bulls in the sale are in the
very top pen which is pretty extraordinary for a calving ease bull.
